    In my head canon Bruce and Clark have been fighting crime during 18 years. Bruce starts while hes 25 and Clark while hes 23. Bruce adopts Dick in year 3 and Damian is born. The Trinity meets for the first time and they create the JL in the year 3 too. In year 4 Clark and Lois get married. In year 5 Superman dies and later, he returns. Lois gets pregnant that same year. In year 8 Dick leaves Gotham to become Nigthwing. Bruce adopts Jason who becomes the new Robin. In year 10 Jason dies. Months later Bruce agrees to train Tim Drake. In year 11 Knigthfall happens. In year 12 Bruce meets Damian. In year 13 Bruce "dies" and Dick takes the mantle for a while. Bruce returns months later that year. In year 14 and 15 the new 52 happen, with the court of the owls, the Damian death and return...
    In year 16, Rebirth starts. In the current comics they are at year 18 with Bruce at his 42 and Clark at his 40.

      Also the Titans debut in year 4 and Batgirl in year 5. The origins of Batman and Superman would be Batman Zero Year and Superman Secret Origin (Batman Year One is a good story but the age of James Gordon Jr. doesnt work in this setting). The New TT run is canon and the Geoff Johns Titans too. The new 52 JL is partialy canon, since Supes and WW never had that kind of relationship in this continuity. The debut of WW would be in the World War II alongside the rest of the JSA as they present in the current canon.

    • @mcf-up9wl
      @mcf-up9wl 4 года назад +4

      And the origin of the JL is different than the one presented in the New 52. J'onn must be a funding member. Cyborg debuts in the new TT and becomes a Leaguer in the year 14.

    • @Ravathiel

      well Clark's age at Rebirth would be different and same with the Marriage.
      Superman as far as I know it - is the one from the 90's that fought Doomsday- He & Lois were thrown into this current world , married- had jon & kept out of the public eye because this world had a younger Superman.
      then New 52 Died and Superman stepped up - and what ever from there. I think he even combined memories / lives with New 52 Clark right?
      I mean this 18 years is still viable , unless you are totally suggesting it's this superman who married during year 4.. then I will totally shut up. lol but Im confused with Year 5 death
      and if it's canon the Robin Anniversary book had a timeline of sorts that suggested Stephanie was a Robin for - a moment- instead of being retconed

    Linkara I think summed it up best in his postmortem for the New 52: DC didn’t commit. By condensing everything into a five year period, and removing characters from continuity, it makes it fall apart. If they were going to reboot it, scrap the whole thing. The first issues are Batman and Superman’s first times as the heroes, make the stories done-in-ones, and no newer characters. This is the first time we’re meeting these people. If Batman starts with a Robin at all, it’s Dick Grayson.

    DC has got to stop with the company wide reboots. It gets confusing and hard for even DC to follow. We need continuity only to the extent we need character development. It's the same debate fans and companies are always having, if characters can't change and develop then every story is meaningless. We KNOW the hero will save the world and stop the bad guy, the question is what's going to happen to them along the way? What will they lose? What will they gain? How are they going to change? And these questions being repeated for every story is what creates continuity. But companies don't like continuity because they feel if characters change too much they won't be merchandisable anymore-- uuuh-- I mean-- "They'll lose the heart of who they are."
    Anyway I don't know if that made sense by my point is continuity should exist to serve character development, not to derail it.

    DC Comics has been struggling with the continuity thing since the introduction of Earth-2. My favorite version of their continuity was arguably its most stable, the 1990s from Zero Hour to Infinite Crisis.
    Truth is I blame Didio and/or any higher-ups pushing him. They wanted it to have it both ways: total freedom to do anything while retaining fanboy loyalty by being cute with the continuity questions. The smoking crater that DC continuity is left with is a monument to their failure.

      I didn’t have a problem with the timeline either, but I did enjoy the various Crisis events, in spirit at least. I’m not sure why DC and Marvel couldn’t do two universes at the same time, just under another imprint. One deals with original and/or prime continuity 1939 - and the other deals with everything multiverse since Earth 2 was established in Flash #161 in 1963. Same would go for Marvel.

  • @morlath4767
    @morlath4767 4 года назад +9

    YT ate my comment so I don't know how much of this rewrite will work...
    The big issue is that there are two types of story-telling. Let's call them the Happy Days System and the NCIS System.
    Happy Days - Mostly loosey-goosey with continuity which means anyone can watch any of the episodes in any order and not have to worry. The characters never really change or adapt, they're stuck (for the most part) fully formed and always react the same way in the same situations. (Again, for the most part).
    NCIS - A series that sprung from a previous series which has sprawling storylines, characters coming in and going out (sometimes through death), continuity out the wazz-o, and events that have repercussions seasons later. It spins out its own new series of shows that cross over and jumping in half-way through is generally not advised.
    The comic industry and DC, in particular, are caught in a really bad case of the higher-ups wanting the first one because they're afraid of losing sales and the fans ranging from being okay to actually wanting the second one. As a Spider-Man fan, I wanted to see Peter and MJ get settled, I wanted Peter to find a way to balance his life and actually get somewhere that his genius and good personality deserved and if that meant passing the role of Spider-Man on to someone else, then I'd still have those old adventures to enjoy. People who only want Mulder in their X-Files can still enjoy Mulder in their X-Files if the character gets removed from newer seasons.
    And it doesn't mean you can't tell random one-offs which could happen at any time or side-continuity stories which don't really fit but need specific things out of continuity to happen in order for the entire story to work.
    Having White Knight or Miracle Man, or the Walmart series of comics DOESN'T MEAN the main series can't/shouldn't have continuity. You can have both if you really wanted to make it work.
    I'm sorry, but when TV soaps can last for decades and have constant continuity then so can comics. All comics need to do is keep bringing out "re-tellings" of the big events for the modern and have the fudging of smaller details that we have already.

    • @noampresnete8677
      @noampresnete8677 4 года назад +2

      i think it's slightly more complicated. if some writer wants to tell a long arc about peter parker losing his powers but stil attempting to be a hero, he can't write it while miles or doc ock are spider-man. about half of grant morrison's career would be out of continuty if comic didn't reboot/restart at some points.

    • @morlath4767
      @morlath4767 4 года назад +2

      @@noampresnete8677 I admit my breakdown is a simplistic version but it can still work with your example. Why does the story have to be Peter losing his powers and not Miles?
      Writers like Morrison or Bendis might tell good/great stories but if their work relies on them doing their own thing and screw continuity then they're bad comic book writers. Whether that's because they're utterly inflexible (likely) or just can't think around their problems to fit continuity.
      There's a blanket argument that there are no bad Superman stories, just bad Superman writers when it comes to writing stories that challenge him. While also simplistic, the point stands that you can write interesting stories when constrained by existing rules and continuity.
      Your example of a Spider-Man story is a good example. It's a tale of what makes a hero a hero - the powers or the personality. Nothing about that ties into an older or retired Spider-Man. It's just the character the writer is working on or wants to write the story about. With this, I would 100% refuse a writer who wanted to bring Peter back into being Spider-Man just to make him lose his powers so he could still carry on fighting. It doesn't /need/ to be a Peter story.
      The story where Diana finds out her past memories of Themescyra since leaving to Man's World are all a lie is Wonder Woman story (for good or ill). You would have to totally redo the entire premise in order for it to work for someone else. But a lot of these continuity breaking stories aren't really ones that must be told around one specific character, it's more the writer either not working with what's there or ignoring it.

    • @noampresnete8677
      @noampresnete8677 4 года назад +1

      @@morlath4767 i would like to add to the conversation Chekhov law, that any part of a story needs to contribute to the overall story. for many superhero tales, those continuity from the past distract from the themes of the current stories.

    • @morlath4767
      @morlath4767 4 года назад +1

      @@noampresnete8677 While I respect and agree with that point, for the most part, I think Chekov's law has taken on a life of its own to the point where it can (can, not does) negatively affect a story.
      Flavour text and non-essential areas focused on by the story-telling can add to the tale even if it never comes around again. Having a gun on the wall can be just as important in regards to character backstory and growth as it could be used as a weapon later on. Chekov was not and should never be treated as a set in stone rule.
      To turn this back to your reply, that's essentially my entire analysis between the two different types of story-telling. The "Happy Days" way of telling a story doesn't care about backstory because the characters are fundamentally set in stone. But this goes both ways. If a writer wants to write a story where a comic character isn't impacted by continuity BUT their story actually has character growth, well I'm sorry that's BS and the writer should be told to grow up.
      What makes Morrison or Bendis' character developments more important than a story that shaped the character they're writing about which was written x years ago? If the emotional impact is strong enough then the answer should always be "nothing." Because I go back to my NCIS example - Why should Tony's reaction to what Happens to Ziva after he falls in love with her matter if you're going to ignore his reaction to Kate's death. One fed into the other.
      The truth of the matter is that ideas about characters are either about the characters themselves (and which automatically includes the backstory and continuity of the characters) or they're about random people with the same powers as the named characters.
      To go back to the Diana/Wonder Woman plot. it could just as easily have been about a random Amazon who left the island years ago and lived a life the world/fans never knew about who found that the island had vanished and all their memories were faked. But that wouldn't have been as impactful as it is when it's about Diana. Why? Because of everything that's come before.

    I think the problem is when they redo the timeline, they do it poorly and create plot holes. This which pressures them to reset the timeline again, which makes the problem progressively worse.
    They should stop trying to fix it for a while. Like a long while.
    My head canon is that time and the Multiverse are unstable because they've been reset so many times.
    Instead of saying that things don't make sense because Dr. Manhattan messed with everything, they should just say the universe is acting erratically because of too many changes.
    The original crisis messed with the natural flow. Every attempt to fix things only temporally stabilized things, but universe would soon spin out of control again.
    And, Dr. Manhattan, like a virus, messes up the flow of an already sick universe.
    Make it scary. If it keeps getting messed with, the universe will implode, or collapse or whatever.
    Then have some villain, maybe the anti-moniter, threaten to mess with things again.
    Here's a free idea: Perpetua notices that the Universe will soon implode because she let it get changed so often. Her idea is to suck the essence of a different Multiverse in, to make the DC multiverse stronger. Said multiverse will get destroyed, but whatever.
    Which Multiverse does she have her eye on? The Marvel multiverse.
    The causes a war between the gods of the Multiverse, a sort of secret crisis ;)
    Stop trying to fix the timeline. Make the broken timeline a part of the story. Boom. Problem solved.

    This is with hindsight now that Death Metal is out and more comments and stuff have been made since April, but as far as I understand it:
    Pre-New52 -> Flashpoint (Doc Manhattan messes with the JSA) -> New52 -> Convergence (everything is another world, Pre-New52 Superman returns) -> Rebirth (Pre-New52 and New52 Supermen combine and Wally West returns, returns everyone's pre-New52 memories) -> Doomsday Clock (Manhattan undoes what he did to JSA, bringing them back and their history, pretty much ending New52) -> Heroes in Crisis -> Flash Forward (Wally becomes Wally Manhattan, Wally's history and kids are restored) -> DC Death Metal (Wally and Wonder Woman restore the timeline)-> 5G (which isn't happening anymore)
    There's also Young Justice, that basically showed that Connor and Bart were both around cause they just so happened to be away from earth when the timeline was messed with, and Wally was a similar situation revealed in the Titans Rebirth book

However, I would love if they would start embrasing theyr crisises as new starting point. This way every 5 years there would be a newcommer-friendly event with a bunch of startingpoints and the writters could reimmagine every Charakter by taking the best of theyr past and by thinking about how this charakter fits into this new age. Now, for this to work you would obviously need to establish a timeline. DC needs to just do a complete reboot. Clean slate, none of the previous stories are canon. The problem with the New 52 was that they didn’t want to fully commit to the reboot. You can’t just start over and time skip 5 years later.
    They need to start over. The Trinity and their gen of heroes have never met. Slowly build up the JL with small team ups (great opportunity to bring back the Brave & the Bold), restart the Titans *without* doing the Trigon and Judas Contract stories for the 80th time. SLOWLY build up to the DCU we’re familiar with to give new readers a chance.

      That way all fans would have options of books to choose : Those who want to stick to the main continuity can still read those books and those who want to be reintroduce to the characters and their mythology can check out the books of the new universe. Everybody wins in the end of the day.

    I remember when DC had a mainstream continuity--a continuity complete with multiple Earths. They claimed to merge the multiple Earths because they "sad" readers were confused and, for example, couldn't distinguish the golden-age Superman of Earth-2 from the younger mainstream Superman of Earth-1. But how many readers were confused REALLY? Seems to me they could have left the DC Universe just the way that it was before 1985. And the "Elseworld" tag could be used to tell one-off stories taking place in the other infinite number of universes. Seems the TRUE mess didn't begin until after the CRISIS On Infinite Earths in '85--the event that was allegedly conceived to clean-up the confusion of the pre-CRISIS DC Universe. But, when you REALLY get down to it, you can blame most of all the problems on the fact that no one sat all the writers down and laid out some established rules. For me RULE NUMBER ONE would be that all the writers should educate themselves on the histories of the characters they were taking on--all the major focal points in the character's life that make up just who that character is. It seems that after the CRISIS on Infinite Earths we saw a lot of "change for the sake of change" and very little respect for what had gone on with the characters before said CRISIS. And lets face it; GOOD writers who actually CARE about the fictional beings they have become the custodians of would be able to think up clever ways to integrate their new ideas into the character's history WITHOUT completely destroy, revamping or ignoring that history.

    I started reading comics in 1955, the tail-end of the Golden Age. Then, and for several years afterward, one could start reading comics without having to already know anything about the characters; the stories were mostly one-shots that introduced the character and power-set with every issue. (Okay, maybe you didn't learn everything in a single story, but you learned what you needed to know for that story to make sense. If Superman didn't use super-breath or go the the Fortress of Solitude in a given story, you still had a pretty good idea of what you needed for that story to work; when something new was introduced in a future story, you simply added that to what you already knew. No big surprises or WTF moments.)
    Perhaps what DC needs to do is go back to the idea of "introductory" one-shots every few issues. Let Batman muse, brood and reminisce about all the previous Robins, to let new readers understand a little about who they were -- and who they are now. Let Green Arrow look at a display of all the "gimmick" arrows he no longer uses, possibly thinking about why he stopped using them. You could even see Wonder Woman explaining to someone the significance of her Amazonium bracelets or the internal conflict she feels when she -- an ambassador of peace and love -- has to go into battle. And include a couple of sentences early in a story that explains who Darkseid is, before putting him into conflict with our heroes.
    (Good luck trying to explain The Joker, and why he doesn't act like he did in the '60s TV show or any of the movies!)
    Not every DC story has to be a multiverse-spanning, 17-issue epic that crosses over into every other title. Some of the best stories in DC history were smaller, self-contained one-shots.
    And it isn't like you have to explain every last detail. Anyone can figure out that the Batmobile, however it appears, is basically a highly specialized auto, or that The Flash is somehow protected from friction-heat when he moves at sup-speed. I would like to know where the members of the Bat-family store those grapple guns on the costumes, though.

    One of the most confusing things about DC's publication and the biggest misconception imo is people think the 'Earth one' and 'earth two' concepts are two planets of the same universe which in fact they are two different earth's from completely different universes.
    Also the Gods Sphere and Apocalypse etc being outside of the actual multiverse. Consequently the events such as Crisis on Infinite Earths didn't affect the Gods Sphere.
    I will say a lot can be explained with Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics, how in fact the Presence didn't make the DC multiverse or the Gods Sphere and Source Wall but Michael Demeirgos' power was shaped by Lucifer Morningstar into the reality that is DC comics.
    Then even beyond all that The Writer wrote all of this so it's even more confusing

    The worse part, in my opinion, is that, once again, canon is not going to line up at all across all media. Take WW for example. The current plans have her in WWII rather than WWI like in the movie. The movie choice of WWI was brilliant. It kept her unique from Marvel's Captain America and it was the last war wherein horses were in combat use. Thus allowing her familiar methods of combat as well as mechanized horrors that were unfamiliar to her.
    I look at the DCAU, YJ, and the various TV adaptations and notice how all my friends and coworkers can easily digest, remember, and even hook together canonical elements. Yeah, DC has used elements from those adaptations, but have not used the broader tapestry of those adaptations for a proper foundation for the comic canon. If DC had a brain, their canon would be inspired to use that tapestry. Not exactly copy or adhere to the better adaptations, but rather use them as a basic foundation. DCAU has the right personalities and interactions, YJ nails the community aspects and costuming, and CW has great uses of certain characters from time to time and combinations of characters.

Surface wise most of the sounds doable until one stops and actually thinks about it. Hey, at least with the crisis on infinite Earths changes, they spent the couple years before that planning the changes out, and even tho there were a couple glitches they did a wonderful job planning things or for post crisis. Most of the problems that eventually came out of the crisis changes was decisions made after the fact, like the Hawkman stuff. Euodias Lee You’re not wrong, as much as I do enjoy Bendis’ run on the current Young Justice series, I admit that they should be reintroduced into this prime earth continuity better. Also I as much as I enjoy his take on Amethyst(and I can understand why he put her on the team, since is obscure and bc they planned a spin-off series about her), his new characters Teen Lantern and Jinny Hex, I think it would’ve been better if they were introduced later in the series and instead would have Spoiler, Arrowette, and Secret, since this is team is trying to remember themselves like Titans.

      @@TevyaSmolka Indeed, I think young justice rebirth should have been more about team’s history and a recap of how they fit in the prime earth continuity at the time. Cuz like with the original titans, during rebirth it was stated that the roster and members of the team were based on the 60s and 70s run as the rosters and members of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s run wasn’t restored yet, Young Justice could have done the same thing.

Any writer can write a good story outside of continuity because its easy, but affer say the 5th or 6th time you have read about Supermsn dying or even Lex the stories just get boring.

    16:22 Sorry, Thorgi, not buying that explanation. Kurt Busiek showed how to strike that balance years and years ago with Astro City by keeping the continuity incidental when it didn't matter to the story at hand, focus on the details that DID matter and doing it in such a way both newcomers and old followers could get in on it. Most people just didn't pay attention and more's the pity.

    14:50 : Although its strange that having such a mental condition is perhaps the defining characteristic of one of Marvel's most liked characters: Tony Stark/Iron Man (Alcoholism, and his popularity is of course post MCU).
    Marvel has never been afraid to give their heros some kind of 'Psychological Disadvantage', like Storm and Claustrophobia.
    The movies never addressed Tony's alcoholism, and thus never gave us his best known (and probably best) storyline of "Demon In A Bottle'.
    I still think they could pull off this story, if they have the guts to attack such a serious subject, and put it on the most powerful character in the MCU: Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.
    In the comics she had her own bout with the Bottle, and it was Tony who helped her out of it.
    This would give the character something to grow from, as well as giving the actress something really heavy to portray. I don't think Disney would be willing to do this to any character in the MCU, though, much less one they have presented as the chief Female Superhero in the MCU.
