The CW is adapting DC Comics seminal crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. This video takes a look at the various Crisis stories in DC Comics which have been running since the 60s. The word "crisis" in a title in DC Comics tends to imply an epic event with changes to their ongoing comics.

"Oh, hi guys. You caught me going through a midlife crisis. Speaking of crisis..."
Chandasouk thought that he was gonna open it like that 😂
Ok boomer
LMAO! That's actually a really good idea
Was thinking just that the second i clicked on the video.
Morrison uses string theory at the end. Essentially, in it's smallest form, everything is energy that vibrates as sort of strings of energy. When all of reality collapses, it's quiet enough that Superman can see the vibrations that make up what little is left of Darkseid. He uses vibrations to disrupt what's left of Darkseid and ends him once and for all. Singing is just his method of delivering those vibrations, since "Darkseid always hated music". Simple!
Edit: By the way, this is foreshadowed when M-theory is mentioned earlier in the story to talk about alternate dimensions.
In all politeness, friend: Infinite Crisis resulted in a multiverse with 52 earths and a weekly miniseries called 52. It was NOT A HARD REBOOT. It was NOT THE NEW 52. That came later.
how the hell did he get that wrong LOL thats literally years apart
That is such a basic thing I'm baffled by the mistake being made by a comic enthusiast.
Oh hi! You caught me wondering what happened to the intro
Volttikoira Short on time. Only had one day to write, record and edit an episode.
@@ComicTropes dont worry the gag for this one was great
But it’s not just “Crisis in title” events that count as crises for DC. Look at Blackest Night, Flashpoint, and Convergence. All served the function of Crisis events despite not using the word in their title.
Convergence sucked so bad.
Christopher Davis I’m not gonna argue with that lmao.
Young Justice Vol 3 Issue 1 declared that the DC Universe has gone through seven crises.
blackest night wasn't a crisis, simply because it only involved 1 universe
@@christopherdavis2847 Two years late to the party, but I'd argue that Convergence was a reprieve after the New 52.
Superboy-Prime isn't the original Superboy, he's the one from Prime-Earth where all the heroes are fictitious
I was just about to write this!
Except Ultraa!
yeah I think Superboy was retconned so Clark became Superman after College and so Supberboy turned out being from a Pocket dimension from I think Legion and gave his life to save.. someone or everything. I can't remember.
I think the subtext of Infinite Crisis, as seen through Superboy Prime, is that nostalgia can be toxic. It highlights how things might have seemed like they were better in the ol' days than they are now, but they're really not as different as you would think.
Yet, bringing back the multiverse kind of conflicts the message. Infinite Crisis was a huge let down and made me quit comics.
Let's keep it real: Infinite Crisis seemed like it was a bunch of writers and editors not on the same page. Somehow, it was coherent but the ending tells you there was no clear direction other than "hey, make sure when can keep the suckers around for our 52 weekly book".
@@WillSams understandable. I wasn't a reader at the time, but I can say that the direction and coherence in the comics has become even more difficult since
Find it interesting that Superpsycho wants to Reboot everything lol.
@@lewisaino maybe he was Dan Didio all along
That's kind of an hypocritical point made by Geoff Johns of all people
I know it’s not a crisis but the 52 story after infinite crisis is one of my favorite dc events ever
Agreed. I was a phenomenal story considering that it was driven almost entirely by B and C-list characters.
Agreed. Really good. I enjoyed collecting it each week, too!
That was my first DC comic I started reading back in 06, phenomenal story.
Who else is excited Kevin Conroy will be playing Batman live action? I mean..the man does has +20 years of experience!
Infinite Crisis is about how nostalgia affects stories. In the story, the Golden-age heroes look upon their successors in their pocket dimension and scrutinize how different it is. They then decide to bring back how things were (i.e. the Multiverse). The Golden age heroes represent fans who liked how the Universe was before, and it shows how that nostalgia can be destructive.
Superboy Prime's attempt to kill Conner Kent represents how old readers tend to dislike new characters replacing the roles of old characters. Earth-2 Superman trying to save Earth-2 Lois represents how old school readers want to hold on to what they like despite the fact that the thing they like will eventually fade away. Alexander Luthor's quest for the perfect world represents the lengths that fans will go to get the Universe exactly how they want it to be. When Alexander Luthor betrayed Earth-2 Superman, it represents how nostalgia can be exploited for the benefit of others.
To hit the nail on the head, when the Golden age heroes get their Multiverse back, it's a shadow of its former self, and, in Earth-2 Superman's case, it didn't bring back what he wanted. Because they were blinded by nostalgia, they turned into what they were fighting against: heroes who have lost their way.
Alternatively, it also critiques the writers for not honoring the old stuff and that it should be kept in mind. This is shown in Wonder Woman's conversation with her Earth-2 counterpart. When she received the Invisible Jet, it represented how we shouldn't be ashamed of what came before.
Overall, the message is that nostalgia is important. It reminds us who our characters are. However, nostalgia can be destructive and turn our heroes into something we don't want them to be.

it's not a continuity error at all, this video is from a Kaleidoscopic superposition between realities.
Previous month I managed to pull my first five figure wage ever!!! I've been working for this provider online for 2 yrs now and I never been happier... They are paying me $95 per hour, and the most important thing regarding it is the fact that I am not really that tech-savvy, they just asked for basic knowledge of internet and plain typing skill...Great thing about this gig is that now I have more time to spend with my family. I am able to spend quality time with my family and friends and take care of my babies and also going on holiday break with them very routinely. Don't neglect this chance and make sure to respond quickly. This is what I do... *grab26.com*

I'm a Marvel fan, have been for years but have to say kudos to DC for their *"Crisis"* saga in 1985. This was on the back of Marvel's 12 issuse run of *"Secret Wars,"* which was a big success for Marvel between 1984-85 and ran through several Marvel titles. I never knew *"Crisis"* started decades beforehand. Thanks for the history lesson, Chris.

Where's the "oh, hi" part?
VAIBHAV KUMAR ya I noticed that too
VAIBHAV KUMAR “Oh hi! You caught me having a mid-life crisis. Speaking of crisis”
It was written off continuity. It'll be retconned back next episode.
Oh, hi Mark.
The image quality is great on this one!
Agreed!!
Chris, another good video. The Miracle Machine at the end of Final Crisis comes from Jim Shooter's run on Legion of Super-Heroes (Adventure Comics) back in the late 1960's. It was created by the alien race The Controllers.
This episode featured Crisis of Infinite Chrises 🤘

Hmm...Grant Morrison is THE explanation for Final Crisis.
That is the most sensible comment I have ever read about Final Crisis
Doomsday clock sucks
Crisis on Infinitely Earths is my favorite comic of all time! I like the idea of multiple versions of every DC hero fathomable teaming up to take down the ultimate bad guy. Plus, I've always been a fan of parallel universe stories in pretty much any kind of media, so this scratches that itch.
I'm going into the crossover episodes with no real expectations. I'm not expecting a frame by frame adaptation but as long as they keep with the general spirit of the comic, I'll be happy. I'm curious to see what surprises they might pull out. You can't bring on all of these guest stars and expect that they don't have at least one good ace up their sleeve when it comes to surprises.
And I just realized my typo. I meant to say Infinite Earths, not Infinitely Earths.
Two magic words explain Final Crisis : Grant Morrison. Nuff said. That's all Folks. Holy Alternative Earths Batman, Good Night and Good Luck... Now look what's happened. The Multiverses are leaking.
Holy Crimson Skies of Death
Since when is infinite crisis the start of the new52? Didn't new52 start in like 2011 after flashpoint? Super confused.
No one
Literally No one
DC Multiverse: SUICIDE IS BADASS!!!
"Oh hi there, you caught me having a crisis. "
Them lights and that camera looking NICE!! This is the best version of the show so far. Just need the iconic “Oh Hi!” part. Other than that, PERFECT episode!!
"Hawkman didn't get his own book until 1989". Yes he did! There was a 17 issue Hawkman series in 1986-87, which started right after Crisis! The '89 reboot had absolutely nothing to do with Crisis!
ComicTropes You are wrong about the New 52. That happened after the Flashpoint series NOT Infinite Crisis...
I really want to see some hero throw a Hostess Fruit Pie at a bank robber to stop them. Earth H forever!

Still can't believe the DC TV shows go to so many big cross over events and the DC movies are barely have that much of a shared continuity any more
Well maybe if DC had a better plan for their cinematic universe (Like Marvel).
Put together a team of filmmakers who actually knew what The Hell they were doing when it came to crossover film events.
And would get a person like Marvel's Kevin Feige to layout a roadmap.
We would have seen more of a shared cinematic continuity as opposed their being no shared continuity as of right now.
Heroes in crisis was really bad I don’t recommend reading that trainwreck
The original Crisis was special, but DC'S attempts to redo it every few years are all bland and unoriginal and whatever continuity changes they cause are undone by the next one. They need to leave well enough alone
Black Phoenix Very, very true. The schtick got old after a while.
Agreed, trying to keep up with so many crisises is what made me give up on staying current with DC continuity lol
Fun fact: Flash Season 1 Harrison Wells gets referred to as "pariah" once or twice. I've seen a clip but I don't remember the episode haha
The CW has definitely planned this for a while
hand over the evidence chief...
Oh, hi! You caught me starting my video without my traditional intro. Speaking of starting over again, let’s talk about Crisis of Infinite Earths. (Cue music)
The Infinite Crisis has one line that summarizes the message-a perfect world doesn’t need a Superman.
The Golden Age is actually quite messed up.
Great episode. The convoluted history of DC and it's heroes, including the Charlton and Fawcett characters, make for a great read. I would love a detailed documentary on this. In thirteen minutes, you've done a stellar job!
After this video, I'm having a Crisis crisis.
Post COIE comics like Superman weren’t good because it stripped him of his character and made him bland. I’m glad he’s back to normal though.
This is an episode I've been anticipating for a long time glad it's finally here
Me: let me just sit back here and see what type of trivial mistakes or oversights I can snipe with my keyboard rifle.
Everyone: Rolls Eyes
ComicPop has some really good breakdowns of all the crisis' events. they're pretty funny too.
Eyyy, nice seeing you outside the ComicPOP comments section!
Love your old best of back issues video!
Cool
New 52 comes after FLASHPOINT, not Infinite Crisis. One Year Later comes after IC.
Aww man no oh hi there intro
Final crisis was a horrible event comic! The worst part was Martian manhunters death! Now look if DC wants to kill off a character with a Nobel sacrifice fine that’s great but don’t pull one of the most tasteless deaths I’ve seen in a comic book! I mean libra torturing manhunter and he’s not Abel to fight back just to make a villain look cool!!! Like seriously! And further more while it’s happening we have all these other villains watching and laughing one of which is filming it in his phone and saying “ I’m gonna post it the the internet!” Like come on that is so wrong especially for a character like Martian manhunter or any character for that matter! That was just disgusting and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people when they saw that completely unsubscribed to DC and started reading marvel because of that crap!
13 minutes is not nearly enough to cover all the crises in DC.
"Superman sings Darkseid to death." Now I know I wouldn't want to have Superman in a band. Lol
Honestly these stories trying to metaphorically combat the darkness in the comics irks me these days because they never seem to tackle the actual issue, the writers themselves. They just seem to want to beat up the darker characters or put some blame on them but its the lazy writers trying to cash in on a successful story that was dark without realizing that its success was from more than just its dark tone. I am pretty sure you said this in your Watchmen video already but instead of making a meta story about DC fighting the darkness of their universe, just tell your writing staff to knock it the hell off and be original. Its not Watchmen's fault DC got darker, its hacks who just wanted to copy it for quick money.
Im currently taking a comic history course right now and the final exam is coming up, one of the things we need to know is about some of the DC Crisis stuff. Perfect timing!
Where do you study? at Miskatonic University?
Did they also make you read Emerald Twilight, Death of Superman and Knightftall?
COIE: Epic story
Zero Hour: Average story, not really special
Identity Crisis: Horrible story
Infinite Crisis: Questionable choices but still entertaining story
Final Crisis: Really weird story but again entertaining
Crisisless New 52 Reboot: F*** this.
Heroes in Crisis: I don't care anymore.

Convergence?
@Austin Reed Honestly I didn't read main stoy but tie-in issues are amazing. Ones I heard main story is not that great, I didn't finished it.
I have recon fatigue. I love Zero Hour and it stopped there. I no longer read DC because of the constant reboot. I skimmed some issue and found some interesting elements i.e. evil Mary Marvel in black, but overall I don't want to read 3 new versions of the same origins in ten years.
I don't understand Heroes in Crisis, it has to say something but there are so many decisions made I don't understand. Like either Dan Didio or Tom King saying:„ Oh yeah we decided that Wally West should be killed off (or better should be used to be problem character of the story), because every Crisis a Flash has to go“ I believe I heard that some plans for the series were changed midway through and it really sounds legit
Much improved lighting! Great to see the evolution of your show. Great episode too, though your detective run was especially good. Another detective comic I would like to see you cover would be Gotham Central (with Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka). Great stuff. Enjoy your trip to Japan.
Crisis on Infinite Earths
Final Crisis
Hyper Crisis throughout the Multiverses
The Omega Crisis
I’m betting the last 2 are gonna be a thing
cool video. I think it's a little reductive to pass over Flashpoint, despite not having the word "Crisis" in the title, it was certainly a Crisis-level event. (And as you say, more than Identity or Final Crises)
Future State? Now THAT was a crisis! *canned laughter*
What about the Crisis in Grant Morrison's Animal Man?
The New 52 is after flashpoint, not after Infinite Crisis.
It wasnt original superboy - it was superboy prime
Thank you. Was looking to see if someone else commented this before I went ahead. Chris, Superboy prime was from the comic kinda based off the 1988-92’ live TV series where he is the sole hero on his world.
My favourite crisis event is the 2015 secret wars.
The chars from the DC cinematic u. are gonna be the ones from Earth X!
Final Crisis is about Morrison attempting to be Picasso :l
Wally west is best flash
I think Geoff John's was saying in infinite crisis that comics got darker and that there needs to be some light heartedness in them like the silver age
Geoff Johns is a idiot
Do the people on Earth 2 think they're on "Earth 2"?
the speed force vibrator accidentally vibrated into an alternate dimension
I loved DC's Multiverse. Not only was it interesting to explore, but it was a neat way of managing the characters DC got from the other comic book companies. It didn't need 'fixing'. Was it too confusing? Only if a writer wasn't good enough to explain it clearly. My biggest beef with Crisis on Infinite Earths was that it retroactively destroyed their past history. After COIE, the writers had to create a history that no one knew about. That was supposed to be less confusing than the previous multiverse? Instead Crisis created new problems that the writers weren't really prepared to deal with.
alot of DC's probs w/the Multiverse was the rise of the short attention span generation/reader. i mean how hard is it to see the asterisk and realize that this happened in issue whatever?
Excellent sir! Ty for including Hawkworld!!! Tim Truman still could use a treatment by you my friend!
Great idea for a video, always wondered how this worked.
Hope you enjoyed Japan!
The new 52 was after flashpoint!
this is becoming one of my fav channels.
All of these crisis and reboot scenarios are why I never cared to get into American comics. The convoluted nature of all the different characters and storylines that keep getting reset is too much for me to try to follow, especially when they make past storylines or character origins obsolete. It feels like having an acquaintance that tells you about a new startup business they are trying to get going, even though the past 50 attempts never went anywhere. Dealing with marvel and DC is like dealing with someone who can never make up their mind.
This is only a problem with DC, Marvel has never had a proper continuity reboot like DC had. The golden age comics from the '40's and Stan Lee stories from the '60's are still canon.
Conroy better wear the suit
This was a pretty neat look at all the crises. Strangely enough, one of the first DC comics I really remember reading was Final Crisis back in high school. Only recently read CoIE and boy that was a trip. There's so much stuff to cover with these books but you did a good job. Thanks for the video!
The fact that you used the word "fun" in describing what you are hoping for makes me like you even more. No joke.
Crisis on infinite earths is going to be awesome and badass
2020: Crisis at DC Comics
I hate the DC Reboots.
Hey ... Hi ... Chris !
Did you know !? There is a
DEFINITIVE EDITION of Crise on Infinits Earths with the cover of Alex Ross! :)
I have it , Seal ! :D
New 52 was later, it happened after Flashpoint which was the real second hard reboot. 52, what happened after Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis, was a badly planned soft reboot that only lasted about 5 years. A lot of people, me included, hate the 52 changes because they mixed up a lot of things, destroyed certain important parts of the New Earth continuity and many other stuff, that's why they came up with the New 52 and later reverted the original crisis in Convergence.
Officially, most DC stories happen now in the New 52 multiverse which apparently exist separated from other multiverses that conform the whole DC mythos. Some people believe that there might be at least 5 different multiverses which include the original Infinite one, the 80's-90's worlds and hypertime (DC, Milestone, Wildstorm, Elseworlds), the new 52 (the "old" 52 apparently has no place in existence now), a Multiverse-2 mentioned in Multiversity (which was sort of a mini crisis) and the Dark Multiverse. According to DC after Convergence, "all worlds exist", so there might actually be infinite multiverses. It's a little confusing now.
Why not tea party on infinite Earths???.........
Because everybody kept changing places.....
I could be wrong, but the Tales from the Dark Multiverse comics mention a new crisis on the horizon. Each story is of a potential character who may be a part of said crisis.
8:58 Superman: "You're ruining everything!" That pretty much sums up DC and their milking of the "Crisis" theme unmercifully.
Am I the only one not confused by final crisis?
i thought it did a decent job explaining itself
You bring up a very good point constantly using Crisis does dilute it and they should be careful about using it so much
I guess my tastes are Post WW Deuce because I find crime, horror, western or war stories so much more interesting than superheroes. This is why DC and Marvel gets almost $0 from me
Has anybody seen my socks? I've looked everywhere and can't find them.
One's behind your bed and the other is stuck in a pair of pants you hardly ever wear so you'll be putting them on several months from now and they'll feel weird until it falls out the leg.
Did you check under the tray?
@@_V.Va_ Yeah, that reminds me. I can't find my tray either.
Don't forget the *_HUGE_* impact that inker Jerry Ordway had on the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" series.
Not really, Superboy of "Original Earth" was created roughly a year before CoIE, while the Earth-2 Superman, despite his lapse in judgement, does end up being a hero like the younger Superman, when they defeated Superboy. It's more like the message they tried to give was "real world has lost its mind(Superboy), a parallel world is always a pale imitation(Alex Luthor) and that the Golden Age is an untainted standard(Kal-L and Lois)". When Superman 2 dies, he has sacrificed himself trying to save the world from the mad and all-powerful Superboy and actually stoping it, while embarking lessons the current DC had supposedly completely forgotten.
It is a mess but certainly not nuanced.
I can explain Final Crisis
Darkseid Is
Evil Wins
Exactly Darkseid is dying but he is such a incomprehensible being that he can drag the multiverse down with him as he dies and twist the "good always wins" universal law even if temporarily
To simplify slightly, Crisis on Infinite Earths made me get out of comics (although I did like Batman Year One).
Final Crisis made me get back into comics.
One problem with Infinite Earths is that DC made it too long. It basically reaches a climax and then starts right back up as though nothing had been resolved or achieved.
In Final Crisis, I loved Barry Allen outracing the Black Racer (a Kirby Fourth World character)- as if he'd been outracing death for 30 years.
Grant Morrison's Multiversity is also great.
I confess that, though I'm a lifelong Batman/Superman fan, and I've bought and enjoyed some other DC titles over the years, I've never really closely followed their continuity.
So it was probably a mistake for me to read Final Crisis. Yes, Grant Morrison's done some amazing work over the years, but... WTF was that??? I first read it over a decade ago, and I still don't understand what's going on there.
My better explanation for Final Crisis? Grant Morrison wanted to write a comic about comics... but forgot to make it good.
Side note: His run on Animal Man was a really nice follow-up to Crisis on Infinite Earths and is the best fourth-wall-breaking comic I think ever written.
(Just discovered your channel... love it! Keep it up!)
Flashpoint created New 52, not Infinite Crisis. I understand you’re well versed with Comics and their history; was the point you were making that IC leads to FC which leads to FP?
Possibly just the way it was stated was ambiguous.
I'd say it's too late for DC to overuse "Crisis", because that's how any big event involving multiple universes/timelines is described. It's practically a verb in its usage. That aside, I read Crisis on Infinite Earths with some knowledge of it going in (namely the big moments involving the Flash and Supergirl). Even then, I was totally engrossed with the story being told that it resonated with me, and made what I already knew about it seem more impactful. Granted, seeing the imagery accompanied by the dialogue and narration is more effective than a Wiki summary.
Good overview Chris. Just a couple of notes for the more pedantic amongst us - the Superboy-turned-villain in the Infinite Crisis event is not the original Superboy from the Silver Age Earth One continuity but rather a Superboy from a version of Earth that was essentially an analogue of the "real" world, canonically known as Earth-Prime. It did not feature any other DC heroes apart from Superboy. Also, I would question your assertion that Infinite Crisis segued into the New52 directly as the Final Crisis event you reference occurred after IC and the N52 reboot is a result of Dr. Manhattan's interference with the re-coalescence of the DCU following Flashpoint as he spotted a weakness in the fabric of reality and sought to create a universe more in line with his outlook on things, including Superman, who became the more alienated, tragic, armoured version of himself for the next several years until the Rebirth era.
