  • Candidates hoping to be the next Los Angeles County District Attorney sparred at a fiery Thursday night debate where issues such aas crime, homelessness and mental health took priority. Ten candidates took the stage including current L.A. District Attorney George Gascón.
Gascón was elected to the role in 2020 for his progressive platform including not seeking the death penalty, limiting excessive sentences and limiting mandatory cash bail for misdemeanors and some nonviolent felonies. Gascón said his reforms have been working and that overall crime is down across the county.
“For the last year, we have seen crime coming down, not only in our community, but we're seeing crime going down nationwide at the same time that we have continued with the reform efforts,” said Gascón. His critics, however, strongly disagreed as the debate gave a glimpse into how potential candidates plan to reshape the future of law enforcement in L.A. County.

My guess is that he believes he’s doing the right thing but half of the equation is missing. There also needs to be services for rehabilitation and to redirect people who are not living the right kind of life. And I am kind of guessing that he believes if he prosecute people to harshly that will give politicians and citizens the easy way out to not follow through with the second half of the equation and not fund the programs and better rehabilitation and such. So he feels like he’s ultimately doing the right thing with prosecution but we have to start doing the other half.
And even though I’m not inclined to believe in his process, I think he may be correct. I say that because many other countries in the European Union have a top sentence for murder of 14 years only. That’s the top. So imagine how much other of their crimes are very low prison time. And their prisons are very soft and nice and clean with very little violence and all kinds of classes and hobbies you can do. Yet when the people get out of their prison they are much, much less likely to reoffend. I don’t like the idea of having prisoners have cushy beds like college dorm rooms, but if their system is working better than ours we should do it. Doesn’t feel right, but if it works that’s all that matters. Yet it doesn’t seem people are willing to put the money where their mouth is and make the real changes that are needed. It’s easier for us to just want to prosecute away the problems.
But most people are not going to even think about the possibility that being softer and nicer to people is actually better for crime in the long run. It’s kind of like telling someone from The 1800s to imagine a jet plane. Or to imagine an iPhone. They can’t even comprehend it because they were never born and raised to believe such a thing. In the United States we are not thought a lot about what the other countries in the world do. So we cannot even comprehend that maybe be nicer to criminals actually could be better in the long run. So I don’t really fully know what all these other countries do, I just know that they are much nicer and softer on their criminals and their statistics show crime is better and their recidivism rate is very much lower than ours. That’s crazy.b

Read aboutat what the Mayor of San Francisco said about him.... And other Attorneys who worked under him. Yeah no thanks Big dawg.... Take care of that ailing Mother and let the real Attorneys work. He doesnt have one clue about the Job . He believes he needs to just be a Manager. No type of heart for the Job. This is Los Angeles, The DA position is one of a leader. Some one who can instill confidence and support into the other prosecutors and Deputies. Homie just came in , didnt ask anybody and swung all the way left. I would like a Leader who takes input from his team. Of youre gonna be a ball hog then atleast make ot look good. He aint him..... Get dude out. Looking for who to vote for, Mckinley or Hatami. Both are current deputies working under Gascon. Theyre in the trenches and understand the gravity of how its affecting the community. I also like that they support each other. Lets vote this Man out. I read enough . And oh yeah... Im voting No on Prop 1 ... Read upake up ur mind but that prop was created behind close doors and is for private funding. Unsoong all the hard work Mental health workers and advocates been creating for 20 years. My first time voting , and im clear of what type of city i wanna live in.
