I visited Lancaster two weeks ago. I love it there. I experienced all seasons in one day, it snowed in the morning, then rained, and in the afternoon, it was hot and at night it was extremely cold.
I like your straight ahead no-nonsense approach to your views. I've lived here for over ten years having moved from Bucks County. My $180K townhouse would've cost almost twice that in the greater Doylestown area. One thing you could have elaborated on more would be the abundance of employment opportunities, although I have no idea if the pay grades are competitive. Of course along with that comes the traffic you spoke about which can be frustrating at times but usually it's short lived (backups on Rt. 30 or Rohrerstown Rd. at 2:45 e.g.). Crime is also a factor especially if you live downtown but where I live in East Hempfield I could probably leave my doors unlocked all the time and it wouldn't matter (although I don't!) and in fact we've never had a porch theft problem here either. I'll be retiring sometime in the next couplafew years and intend to stay right where I am.
As a Lancaster native, this is truly infuriating. NY, NJ, MD, VA, FL, TX, etc. all coming in and pricing out families who have been here for generations. It's tiring to see people moving in because "it's so affordable here!" as they make it unaffordable for the people who have roots here and live on local salaries. Vacancy rates are some of the lowest in the nation; there is less and less incentive for landlords to offer affordable housing. (frankly I think there should be strict limits on investment properties, especially when faceless out-of-state investors or flippers with no ties to the community scoop up properties that could otherwise house families actually in need) Never mind that Lancaster's rich agriculture makes it the bread basket of the northeast, yet with more development it continues to lose precious land. And the available "affordable" units in all the buildig development popping up is laughable. "Market rate" no longer applies to the average Lancaster worker. Hey, if you come to see Lancaster, please enjoy your visit. Just remember how to get back. #keeplancasterlocal
If they care so much simply don’t sell their homes. Oh wait they’re probably moving somewhere else and “pricing people out.” 🙄 no one forces the locals to sell at a premium to “outsiders” 🙄🙄🙄
You forgot to mention ALL the Crime and Drugs that some of them are are moving in here with them from those big cities!!! A few more years till I can retire and then I'm getting the heck out of this place before it turns into another shithole like NYC has. I'm looking at the Mountains of North Carolina where there is NO public transportation and plenty of WOODS!
I can assure you with out a doubt that FL is the state most people are fleeing too since 2020 not the other way around 😂 cost of living tripled for Floridians due to the influx of northern moving down.
Lived here all my life . Moved away recently. There’s a reason more people have moved out of this state than in 20 years in a row . Commonwealths aren’t the way to go. Lancaster city violence has gotten worse as well with the influx of people moving from the big cities . Good place to start a family outside of the city . But for anyone who’s young I would stay away.
We have lots of young people/clients buying houses in downtown and they absolutely love it! Is the city perfect? No. But it’s really not that bad at all and when we talk to other people from other cities around the country they laugh and say we don’t know how good we have it.
The housing market is insane here, too. All of the outsiders moving here are driving prices up, so I wouldn't say it's any cheaper than other areas in PA. You could probably get a cheaper house in Philadelphia than here.
Hi Nina - a cursory look at Zillow shows that essentially anywhere you go to the east of Lancaster, the more expensive it gets for the same house. Not only that, but taxes get more expensive. Sure, there are more rural markets surrounding Lancaster County that are less expensive, but they also don’t offer as much as Lancaster does.

I hear you. Prices have gone up everywhere, but compared to many other populated areas across the US, Lancaster is SUBSTANTIALLY less expensive from a cost of living perspective.

Spot on with the odd business hours and traffic. Not as bad as the greater Sacramento region for the traffic, but this area also was not a master planned community as is common near Sacramento. The main thorough affairs here just simply or not as big for the population. Our kids absolutely hate driving around here because the signage is not nearly as good, especially the highway entrances. However, the taxes are not nearly as high.

Unfortunately a lot of Crime and Drugs has been moving in lately from those Big Cities you mention.....I moved out of one of those cities 2 decades ago for that exact reason.....And Have you seen the Homeless Problem at Bin's Park right where the County Offices Building is and also taken over by the Homeless in the New Ewell Plaza park?? There are Million $ condos right across the street looking at that mess and a new luxury apartment building being built also across the street from the County Offices Building....
Drugs and crime are problems in every city across the U.S. big and small. Homelessness has certainly ramped up in the city, but I know the city is working hard to try to rectify that.

i lived in lancaster my whole life. 22 years. i moved almost a year ago. there's a lot to do...unless you're a kid growing up there. everything costs so much, and good luck getting anywhere if you don't have a car. public transport is only good if you're in or immediately outside the downtown, and unless you are near that downtown, there isn't often much within walking distance. also, you say diversity is good...growing up trans, it wasn't. i will say that what i miss the most is the dairy farms like oregon dairy and pine view dairy. it was nice to get an ice cream, sit down, write, and enjoy the good weather.
You make some good points… and yes, public transportation anywhere is only going to be confined to areas with the highest population densities. When it comes to diversity in Lancaster, in particular, the more populated areas are rapidly changing. Of course, there are still areas, just like anywhere, where that is not happening.

10-20 mins to go a couple miles? its a dream lol. north of boston 40mins is the average commute time to go across 2 miles
I visited Lancaster staying at a Christian retreat and I can definitely vouch for the food. The Amish are great cooks and I ate very well.

Your kids are right…that Route 30 corridor on the north side of the city is a NIGHTMARE to navigate if you don’t know the area.
