- The iPhone SE was truly something special, and that's reflected by it still being fully supported on iOS 14, 5 years after release. How does the iPhone SE hold up in 2021?

Hard to believe the SE is 5 years old already, but I think there's more to talk about here than just how it holds up in 2021 - it really set a positive precedent for Apple moving forward.

My older brother had one in 2016, I remember clearly as a high spec phone within a older model body, I found it to be a good looking phone and the support until recently is amazing from Apple, just the battery wasn't amazing but overall a good phone
The last good iPhone. Unless Apple bring back the iPhone 5 design. Please do that.
@Fendora Gang how the heck 😫
I loved my 5C, I loved my 2016 SE, and now I love my XR
Seriously in spite of the 5C being the “worst” iPhone, it was my first iPhone, the one that drew me to iPhones in the first place, and I wouldn’t have continued upgrading to other iPhones if I didn’t absolutely adore it.
I never had the iPhone SE 2016. However, after having the 12 Mini, I appreciate the SE a whole lot more.
How are you finding the 12 mini?

I just picked up an SE as a backup phone. The phone itself is immaculate, has 95% battery health, and 32 gig memory. It runs amazingly well on IOS 15. It seems to work as well as my 2021 SE, all for just $60.

After listening to your professional review of the iPhone SE first edition I called a friend who owns two for himself, two for his wife, two for his daughter and four for his son and wife and they all enjoy this iPhone SE first edition very much.
Today I was having lunch with one of them and they were showing me the iPhones special edition first generation and I found it to be quite capable of taking pictures, sending the pictures to a family member instantaneously, and taking a phone call 300 miles away and the phone worked beautifully and all the text was easy to read when the text came in. We wanted to find a theater that was playing a certain movie title and the cell phone found an answer almost instantaneously. Thank you for sharing your review with the rest of us out here that have never used an iPhone before. After watching this review I ordered one with 64 megabits and a protective case that also charges the phone and stores extra electrons extending the life of the battery.
I found one on eBay for $100 plus tax and free shipping with a 30-day return policy if I don't like it. I currently have an LG phone and I find it difficult to use because it has too much bloat to wear, it is slow, and the text is very difficult to read. Thank you for your professional review of this small computer 🙂.
I just bought a used SE just today, and after setting it up, I’m very surprised with how usable it is. It still feels pretty snappy and the battery life doesn’t seem to be dropping that quickly for a small phone.
can the batt last a day? i wanna get it
@@kenlol78 depends on what you do and whether you replace the battery of course. But on iOS 14 with a new battery, I could make it through a day. But keep in mind, the main things I did with that phone is communication (calling and texting), listen to music/podcasts, and some light amounts of social media. Playing games and using the cameras will kill the SE batter in like 2 hours lol
@@Marngel i changed my mind and got a xs lol
@@kenlol78 yeah probably the better decision tbh. As Interesting and cheap the old SE is nowadays, the XS is just a much better phone for not much more in the used market

Great phone. I am just upgrading in the next few days cause I kinda broke the charge port while cleaning out lint, and the camera on the back does not focus close up so I can’t use QR codes. I dropped it one time and this happened.
It lasted me about 6 years!

Same! and the battery isn't at its best but 81% in a 6-year-old phone isn't that bad, right?
I bought an SE a few weeks ago just to feel the nostalgia
How's it feel? It's a high-tech robot machine for such small and old phone ha.
EEEEEEEEEE
A new one or used?
@@azettezettecorp3676 there are no new SEs anymore. You can only buy used or refurbished
The most beautifully design Apple has ever made for a phone. The aluminum body with chamfered glass edges and tactical buttons make it a masterpiece. I have three of them with two still in sealed boxes!
I still have this SE, and its probably the best phone I've ever had. Its snappy with the A9 chip, even on iOS 14! A new battery with a 2nd hand phone still holds up (as of now). Edit: I finally chose to make an upgrade after three years, and now I’m using the SE 2, and I have to say it’s pretty good!

@Pichpanharith Dara does it still get software updates
@Pichpanharith Dara what did it cost
@Pichpanharith Dara do you know what the max battery capacity is

I have a 128Gb version of this phone. Replaced the battery 2 years ago and now running 15.4.1 version of the software. This is my backup and music player device and still runs very well alongside my 12 Pro Max.
I remember being in college, wanting this phone so much, after 2 years I still wanted it. When I got some money from my job I bought it. Silver 32GB, was so special moment. Now I do have an XR but it doesn’t have the same feeling even though I know is faster and better, just ain’t that special as the SE. probably nothing will beat that feeling as owning this phone. My favorite of all time.
Battery is crap, but otherwise is a solid little thing
Get a new battery it runs way better especially today’s battery for them
Alex chavez got a new battery in it and I run as my music player. Got all my Spotify music downloaded and thank god for the headphone jack it still does work great

Alex chavez yes, that’s why I said I use my SE (2016) for that
i’m a kid, should i get it?
I upgraded to this model in 2018, meaning to replace my ageing ipod touch from 2010, but liked it so much that I made it my daily driver until 2020. One for my collection...
I adore this phone, just upgraded from my SE to the i12 mini. Replaced the battery a year ago and it was worth it to keep as my primary until the long awaited mini. Great video!
i like that nickname for the 12 mini lol, im going to coin iSE
I’ve had the 2016 SE since, well, 2016. I’ve never felt the need to go to a larger phone, maybe because I have a 9.7” iPad Pro for anything benefitting from a larger screen, and I can still read the small text on the SE just fine (with reading glasses these days).
I did have the factory battery replacement a year ago, which restored original battery performance at the time. At this point, I do plug it in when I’m at home and life is getting low in late afternoon. I do a lot of web browsing, online news reading, email, text, some RUclips, but am not much of a talker if you’re curious about the usage behind the battery life.
I just updated the SE to iOS 15 yesterday, and it still performs well for what I had been doing on the phone. Just read the Apple site to get an idea of the iOS 15 features that the SE can NOT take advantage of because of its older hardware.
Wow, you are a trooper, do you still have that iPhone SE, or did you upgrade?
@@123theprodigy5 Still using it, but plan to upgrade to the 13 mini sometime this year, as all indications are that 1) the 2016 SE will not be eligible for iOS 16 and 2) this is the last year the 13 mini will be made - so last chance to upgrade to a more modern “small” phone.
Definitely, you might as well get it while you can, also you get more storage
@@brucedarling4751 My 2016 SE is just now starting to die.. proud of keeping it alive for as long as I did as I despise the culture of changing your phone yearly.
iOS 15 got installed and my phone has just given up on showing accurate battery life (or that its charging at all) so im probably gonna make the leap for iphone 13 mini, even if I really hate not having the fingerprint scanner.. and that I think the notch-thingy is infuriating waste of screenspace.
Will also be sad to replace my phone cover, as ive been using the same one since iphone 4 hehe!
@@S1337 So, following on @123the prodigy’s comments, I finally replaced my 2016 SE with a 13 mini. A LOT of money by the time you add extra memory, Apple Care, a cover, AirPod Pros, magsafe charger, etc. The new iPhone is almost the same size factor, but the screen extends to the edges so you get an extra row of icons on the screen. Other notable differences are the face recognition in lieu of fingerprint, the lack of a headphone socket (hence the new airpods), the magsafe charger (though a regular lightning cable works just as well for the iphone, it also is needed to charge the airpods magsafe case), and “swipe from the bottom” instead of a home button. The overall user experience isn’t all that different, though, which I take as a testament to the SE.
This is a great video! Its nice seeing videos made looking back at this phone.I’m using it right now with an 85% battery health. It runs perfectly for me but, when I’m gaming the battery can drain really fast.I love this phones design, especially the circular volume buttons instead of a rocker.
Watched this on my iPhone SE, battery life isn’t great but I love the small size. Will upgrade to the iPhone 12 Mini once this phone is no longer updated on iOS, most likely this fall. So glad they came out with the 12 Mini!
I think you'll have to wait another year because the iPhone SE 1st generation is getting iOS 15!
@@mr.thumbsup8335 Already replaced it with 12 Mini 3 months ago when the 128gb model went on sale for $504. Can’t beat that.

It’s funny how this video came today. I just received my 2016 iPhone SE today! A rare catch at that! It’s the Rose Gold 128GB option with the OG box and unused accessories, it’s damn-near brand new!
Just bought myself one of these today as a back up to my main Android phone. Love it already and the nostalgia of using a device that can still run all the latest apps with a 4" screen really is fantastic
Same here. I put a brand new battery 🔋 and get a full day out of it. This probably the only phone I like from Apple even after upgrading to the latest ones like the 12 pro Max... Oh I returned the 12 pro Max 2 days later.🤣🤣🤣
My old iPhone se lasts about 2-3 hours watching RUclips(55% battery capacity). I am using it as my mac Camera for distance learning. Main phone is a XR

It's amazing the body came from the 5 (2012) and its now on iOS 14 almost 10 years!!!
@AYMXN ye it is hard to believe
I had an iPhone SE, and I've just now upgraded to an iPhone 12 mini. I might've stuck with the SE for a bit longer, but considering my battery life was down to 75%, the power button had become less sensible, the speakers acted like I had headphones plugged in (and stopped playing audio) for a day, and the rumors of iOS support being dropped sometime, I think this was a great time to upgrade.
I had this phone till two weeks ago. Just upgraded to twelve mini. Seems like a spiritual successor to the SE, really.
I still have the legendary iPhone 4 and it's still good till today
Just a change of battery
even though i can upgrade for the 2nd gen, i'm still rocking my 1st gen. Works like a charm, even with iOS 14. Might be using it till the end of this year or until the battery gets worse
Well se was my grandmother’s first smartphone i bought it dirt cheap used n now she does online banking with it and plays games
In short she loves it👌
I got one recently for dirt cheap to see if I'd like IOS more than android. Really good phone.
Even when it was new my SE struggled to last a full day with moderate use. After six months I needed to carry a power bank with me.
Watching on my iPhone SE! I'm satisfied! It runs smooth on iOS 14
Better performance then ever!
true! I hated the IOS 13, but in the 14 it's even better than new
I have removed my SIM from my 12 Mini and have placed it into my barely used pristine SE ‘16 for one week. I am on Day 2 now and I am really happy with how well this ancient phone runs iOS 15.4. I have updated all my apps and have watched show on Netflix/Disney etc… and RUclips and I am loving it so far. There is still a lot I am missing in my Mini so I guess I will appreciate it more next week when I switch them back over.
I tried putting my sim card into my iphone 5s but it kept on saying no service maybe my 5s is not unlocked because I bought it from a friend who had gotten a iphone 11 because my android is being really slow and the 5s is actually faster its on ios 10.3.3 maybe I might take it to the place where I pay my phone bill t mobile and ask if I can see if it's unlocked and if I can switch my phone from my current phone to my iPhone 5s so that's all have a great day and stay safe
I had an SE in 2018 for about 6 months loved it felt nostalgic to hold and surprisingly fast compared to my old 5S
I still got iPhone 3Gs 16GB version on iOS 2 and it still works perfectly, smooth, fast (even tho some apps and web pages won’t work). I had it like a year in the drawer off and I turned it on, it almost didn’t load the system, it was loading in the plug iTunes screen, so I keep it on all the time because I got there memories back from 2009. I am not using it, but still keep it on!
Glad to watch your video, since I really don''t know of having the SE. Very happy still with mine, showing battery capacity of 80%, happy to know that it might be viable for a bit longer. Thanks
Writing this on my OGSE 🎉 just got my battery replaced after 6 years of good use. And it’s almost flying like new, I love it! Hope ppl realize they can stick to some of these devices longer than they’ve been doing nowadays
I still own this SE as my main phone, I replaced the battery once and it works like a charm. My only complaint is that the weaker metal they used before the 6s cause my phone to bend a bit right by the volume button (this was a common issue in the iPhone 5 and above). Apart from that, no complaints.
i have a 6s since day one, has been an amazing phone, battery life not the best but does the job (its on its 2nd battery and needs a new one)
I’m writing this comment on an iPhone SE right now. This video managed to both make me feel proud of the phone I’ve been using for 5 years and also make me feel one million years old.
I’ve always justified not upgrading by saying “it does everything I want it to do”, good to know I’m not crazy!
I have the iPhone SE1, and i love it, especially its rose gold finish. Also it did end up getting iOS 15 :D Also it has a nice camera, and after I replaced the battery, everything runs smoothlly.
my 1st iphone feeling nostalgic loved this one 😍
What a phone this was!
I replaced my girlfriend’s battery in her 2016 SE, and it’s still running like a champ. Great phone.
I changed mine for a 12 mini last year, but I still think the minis are too big.
I replaced my battery and screen and i’m at 100% again. it’s a great phone. definitely has some quirks like dirt and dust getting into the charging port that needs cleaning once a month but it’s the toyota camry of smart phones
Watching this on my 1st gen SE! Just got a new battery! I’ll be upgrading to an 8 this summer!
I would get the new SE instead of the 8. Basically the same thing but better
@@brendan7210 the new se is my favourite phone, but I’m getting the 8 for free so.
@KaraOsman its the same 1821 size battery
@Pichpanharith Dara not when I’m getting the 8 for free! Plus the XR is WAY to big.
I'm gonna hopefully upgrade to a XR for 250 new! I cant wait!
I recently upgraded to the 12 Mini after 3 years of owning an SE. I loved the feel of it but after upgrading, I can’t imagine going back.
This phone runs well, still got 83% battery life and ios 15.1. Can't fault it.
I've had an 11 Pro since a little after it came out. A big part of this decision was not wanting to deal with the DSLR life.
I put the sim card in my SE every day I go to work, and still use it extensively when at home or even out and about. It's a legend.
I still use a first gen SE and it still works surprisingly well!
This iPhone is in fact getting iOS 15
I love my SE! I have the rose gold because it's wacky, and keep it on a Mint subscription to make it the ultimate secondary budget phone. It is the polar opposite of my Galaxy Note 10+, but is simple and frankly a gorgeous little nostalgic design I can carry with me at all times. You are absolutely right about it being phenomenal for talk and text, but as a daily driver it could be tricky.
Love the vids bro, keep up the reviews, binged so many videos in a matter of a month, very well done videos based on facts and experience 🔥
I have a 128gb version, and I have loved it ever since I got it a couple years ago. I was really tired of larger phones and I have no plans or desire to get rid of it even after it stops getting updates. I was way too used to the lack of updates on Android before for something that piddly to bother me.
My battery life is reasonable. Battery health is at 88%, and it lasts most of a day with no charging, but I do charge while listening to podcasts during commutes to and from work, and over lunch.
iOS latest update works fine for me, but I'm not a power user... No heavy gaming or VR/AR. I've got purpose-built machines for that.
I had a 5, 6, then an 8 in 2019. The 8 always felt too big for me. The only thing I liked about the 8 was the haptic button. I bought a brand new first gen SE last year and it's the perfect phone for me. I've had people make fun of me saying "is that an iPhone 5?" And laughing at my face. Jokes on them having to carry around a huge phone everywhere they go. I love my small phone, the camera is not bad, and I don't care for the new phone's technology. I appreciate the 12 mini, but it's just barely smaller than the 8, so really not that small at all compared to my SE. It would have been cool if they had a phone with the first gen SE body but an edge to edge screen. I can see why they wouldn't do that, nowadays the bigger the better. I don't really see the appeal of that. Yes the screen is small, but I really don't mind. As for the battery, I bought it brand new so it's at 100% health still after 7 months. This phone kind of forces me not to be on my phone 24/7 (the screen being small to watch stuff on) which is a good thing. I can go 2 days without charging my SE. Newer phones will have more and more modern technology making us more and more dependent on them, being on them constantly. Theres pros to new technology, but it will ultimately make us glued to our phones more than ever before. Not a good thing at all. My life seems simpler with this phone.
issue is for many people, their phone is their main computing device that they do everything on, so they need the larger screen. i find this sad. get a computer
I brought an SE back in June 2020 and it’s not worth it in 2021 but it was at the time
I got it in 2018, and it was great back then. This phone just gets completely outshined by the SE2
@@katierina31 I got the iPhone SE in July 2018, absolutely loved mine, was possibly my favourite iPhone I ever owned. I got it to replace my iPhone 6 which I broke the display on, used it until Mid 2020 when I got the iPhone 8 and then got the iPhone XR.
The phone feels tiny, but I do still miss it in certain ways. It’s on 89% battery health at the moment but the battery life is horrible, with it only getting a few hours screen on time and the fact I managed to bend the shell from two years of it being in my jeans pocket with probably different temperature changes with the classic British weather, also Touch ID no longer works since I spilled orange juice on it and it’s been through like 5 screen replacements lol
Either way, it was a great phone for the time, but I don’t regret upgrading.
I got it back in August 2018, I just need a new one because the space isn’t doing good, but it’s worked great😭😭
I got my iPhone SE in 2017 and it still works like new on IOS 14.4.1. I have never replaced anything on this phone and the screen has no scratches. Held it for 2 years with no problems then to an iPhone 8 then to an iPhone 12. I kinda regret the upgrade because 90% of the things my iphone 12 can do, my iPhone SE can also do, even the speed and fluidity is nearly the same =)). Cheers!
I'm still using this. iOS 10.3.3 still fluid as fast. Can still compete on any smartphone with high graphic games.
I have an iPhone se 1st gen and it still holds up great supported by iOS 15 this is the best news I’ve heard in ages
Still using my iPhone SE 32GB I bought in 2017 💪 Replaced the battery and works fine in terms of performance and what I use a smartphone for. Only downside is that it dies really fast when using GPS apps and watching content is not enjoyable on it. But the headphone jack makes it a great music player 👌
I have both SE’s! Old one is in it’s original box but I bought it before they were all discontinued. But I did have the SE gen 1 when it first came out.
As always great! This is my favourite (and the newest that I have in my collection) iPhone.
I have 2 units of this beast. And it still rocking like just came out last year. This is the perfect smartphone ever produced in 2016.
I am still using this phone and love it, except for the battery. Seriously I have to charge it so often just to get through a whole day if I want to do more than listen to music or call/text. Which is why I am so glad I will be getting a 12 mini early June, can't wait!!
That is the reason i bought a 12 mini i loved that size
I had the SE since launch, used a 6s when it broke the first time, bought an SE again, broke it again and upgraded to an 11. I couldn’t stand the size of the 11! I spent about a year sorely missing my SE till I replaced the screen, went back to it right away and really only felt it lacking a solid battery life. I finally made the only satisfying upgrade I’ve had since the SE launched: the iPhone 12 mini. Amazing battery life for someone who is a relatively light user, super holdable in my hand, a nice large screen that I don’t struggle to see, and the gorgeous squared edges that made the 5/SE such a beautiful design in the first place. The 12 mini was made for those of us who were on the last legs of their original SE’s and unwilling to let go. I’ll always love the SE as the perfect phone size, but the 12 mini has no flaws for me!
I bought this phone in feb 2017, and still using it. It truly holds the value it provides, now it shows its age. but truly a gem. I am so glad to this day, that I bought this beauty.
I still use mine everyday. I did replace the battery, though. Very easy process in case anyone wants to try.
Which battery did you use, and for how long can you use the phone now after the battery replacement?
@@K-guy Crazyparts (Australian wholesaler) battery. I get more than a full day still, around 5.5 hours of screen time. Generally a full working day, 8am-12pm in my case, will take 80-90% of my battery. Battery is at 92% of its maximum capacity 16 months in.
Still have the iphone SE 2016, and I love to read ebooks with it, being that it's comfortable to hold :D
I'm currently watching some videos to keep myself from upgrading from an SE to the 13 mini. Yours is a strong advocate to keep the little sucker around a little longer
I bought a new SE (2016)a couple of years ago unlocked off ebay to replace an earlier 16g SE .. Fantastic phone, Even today 11/25/2022 my battery is still 100% (I did buy it new) Granted my use is very basic but I love the size and the build. So much love for the SE, still use it as my main phone. I've dropped it so many times and I'm amazed with the things I've gotten away with regarding that. Always expecting that cracked glass when I pick it up but no. I think my girlfriend has gone through 4-5 6S models because of the plastic/fragile shell and I'm still on this little tank laughing at her ass. Only thing I can complain about after 5 years would be the battery, that only started recently (a few months into 2021) but it's no biggie, a 30 dollar fix and after so many years you can't really complain at all. Best iPhone I ever had.
It's by no means a slow phone.. (yet).
This was my first iPhone I ever got at release date. Had it for many years. Until my uncle gifted me the 11 Pro Max for my Bday when it was released. Great times

Rocking an iPhone SE from August 2016, bought during a trip to the USA. Last July I upgraded it to a refurbished 32GB model hoping to get to October and get the 13. I’m currently using my sixth battery case, it’s impossible to live without. Loving the device but now it feels a bit old, especially the display. I've always loved smaller phones but in the last two years I’ve been more and more attracted by the bigger screen, especially as I use my phone as a monitor for my drone shots and for my osmo pocket camera, and 4" just isn’t enough
i’m currently watching on a se 1st gen, had it for four years
took 3 years for any battery problems and to even break the screen
I'm still using an original se as a call out phone for work (and second pokemon go account don't @ me 😂).. It's been going strong for a number of years now and still a great little phone!
i’ve had two iPhone SE 1st gens, truly an amazing phone, but using a 12 as my main and SE 2nd gen as my backup.
My dad had this phone and boy it was absolutely a joy to use. My thumbs could reach all four corners with ease. It’s a timeless design and I wish they updated it with the same iPhone 5 shell
thats still my daily driver right there!
Did you change the battery? How long does it take until you have to charge again?
I have one that just sits in a drawer. I used to use it as a secondary phone. It was nice.
Sell it or use it as a music player.
I’ve been rocking the SE since January 2017, it’s great
I was given one about a year ago and it is still Boss!
I still use it as a daily driver. The battery life has improved since e I replaced it last year. Ios 15 doesn’t matter to me. big Tech is watching us too much already.
I picked up an iPhone SE a couple years ago for $50, and it's been great. I primarily use it as an alarm clock, but I do other things with it as well. It's still running a beta of iOS 13, and I haven't turned it off or let the battery die since some time in October of 2019. It's still running very well, and it's a great little phone.
still using mine and I have no complaints
My Mom was using the SE I bought new for her back in the day. It was working fine, but her battery was trash. I upgraded her to the new SE. Would have got her an 11 or 12 but having to learn the gestures was an obstacle. The new SE was an upgrade for her, kept the familiar operation. Perfect solution. And she does like the new experience of wireless charging. If we had replaced the battery in her old SE a yr or so ago she would have happily kept using it now, but I didnt want to sink money into it now for a battery, as sunset is closing in on the old SE. It was time for a new iPhone, she loves the new SE
