This is very similar to the Yamaha SU700 I used to have in the 90's. Same idea. Back in the day they called these phrase samplers. This looks like it carries the same type of frustrations when it comes to versatility. I use an MPC live 2 now and AKAI are leading the way with hardware products like this. It still is not perfect but can do most things, just has a steeper learning curve.
I am feeling more and more like this sort of retro-fied gear is , in the end, just a (space-hoggin' in this case) replacement for gear that had to use a zip or disk drive. If any of these companies were half as 'enviro-conscious' as they'd like us to believe, then they'd be offering to retrofit and recap their existing products instead of planned-obsolescence-ing 90% of them into eventual landfill.

Thank you so much for the Don Muro recommendation, @Alex. I’m listening into to Anthology now, and it is a tour de force. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this guy, and didn’t have anything by him in my record collection.
I’m so glad that this was brought out to us by a ‘boutique’ sort of small operation, and not some gargantuan behemoth corporation such as Behringer. Although big corporations can bring this sort of gear to us at really great prices, i wouldn’t want to think that ‘throwbacks to the classics’ of hardware could only be made by a few privileged companies. This instrument’s designer really put his all into this one, and the labors of his endeavors really show. The look and aesthetic of the Emu sp-12 / 1200 are well preserved with the cheeks and all, and it looks hardy and rugged. I’m not expecting to see very many of these, but I think it’s more likely that this is gonna find its way next to my turntables quicker than an old Emu SP would. Paying quite so much for a sampling groove box that only yields like ten seconds of sampling 12 bits @ 26 kHz, and then waiting for an antique mechanical floppy drive to save my work onto a handful of floppies seems a bit like self torture, no offense intended Alex. Wait?! OMG, does this thing have the old hinged front panel, like my old Ensoniq KS32?! It’s been awhile since I’ve needed to change it’s battery so I nearly forgot the ease of access of those hinged hoods. Dammit! The more I’m thinking about this, the angrier the look I’m getting from my MV8800. Thanks again Alex! Good to see a piece of BOTH lesser known AND NEW gear make it’s way under your radar!!
Excellent Alex. I wonder what happens when the pandemic is over? No more extensive well researched and executed videos? This is the best Sales Pitch for this. Isla should use you for their PR as you make a compelling case, for sure! I have seen all the pre-launch videos, but this is a great demo. Your music and examples are as excellent as usual. Was this endorsed or licensed by Dave Rossum (E-Mu)? I've had long chats with him about the relaunch of the SP12 over the past few years. The last time we spoke he was undecided whether he would make a mini version, or a full size with a hoarde of extra new features. That was at Superbooth '19, I was hoping to see him at Superbooth 20 with the view to discussing a modular drum kit for his updated machine using my hand built gear. Sadly Superbooth 20 never went ahead. Seems he either sold the idea on to ISLA or they used the out of copyright designs & kits. Rossum did mention quietly in my ear that he didn't want the Behringer boys getting word of this, so it's odd that it surfaced under another company.
I was 99% convinced and then the record player earth swung it! As far as I can see, taken as a whole there's nothing to touch this anywhere, I knew it was gonna be an expensive day.
Is it possible to use the looper without recording to a pre specified tempo? Meaning, if I was to beatbox at my own tempo without a click and record it would the s2400 be able to loop it and work out what the tempo is even if it's something strange like 93.6 etc?
It has a song mode! Digitakt tries pretty hard not to be compatible with a song-mode approach to making music, so it's a pain to make things on it when doing horizontal-first composition (sequence a single part for the length of a song, then go back to add other parts, then adjust mixing and voicing and such).
THIS is how I will use mine. Sampling old drum machines and then throw in a few ambient samples which I grab from my synths or the real world.. @@ShroomJesus Or maybe you're rationalizing it because you spent 5k for a 12 bit sampler because it introduces artifacts when you slow samples down and has analog filters. If I'd spent that kind of money for an sp, I'd want to believe you couldn't reproduce its sound too lol
@@ShroomJesus _"I know what this machine sounds like"._ So you didn't listen to the A/B comparisons then? The plot thins. _"it is click bate for kids who never touched a real sp"_ The word is "clickbait" and I'm not sure how a machine can be clickbait, but I assume you're saying that the nod to the SP is deliberate, which nobody is questioning. _"your just another steamer chasing the clout"_ "Your" refers to possession like "your cat, your dog, your house". If you want to say "you are" then the contraction of "you" and "are" is "you're". That'll help you avoid undermining your own points in future. You're welcome. _"Sorry I could Careless"_ The saying is "I couldn't care less". Careless is a separate word that means "not giving sufficient attention or thought to avoiding harm or errors" which is actually beautifully ironic here. Also, if you _could_ care less then that means that you care, but then judging by your comments and attitude, perhaps that is actually more fitting. ;) _"F isla instruments"_ Such poetry. Have a nice day George.
never been a fan of tiny screens and outboard step sequencers but i am slowly coming round to the idea of having a break from the monitor screens and feeling a bit more hands on. not sure if im 1500 interested but yeah
It's all well & good until you need tech support, I remember buying their first product the "Kordbot" & tried to get support on it & it was a nightmare they seemed too busy working on new gear to respond, now they're trying to sell a premium product, better hope it doesn't run into any glitches & then you end up with a $2000 dead box like I did with mine. One thing about buying gear from smaller companies is its a risk but the good ones always have great support, Even back in the early days of Dave Smith Instruments when they first released the Evolver is they had great support from day one. HARD pass on any ISLA products bc if you're not an influencer their support sucks, keep up the great videos Alex.
Thanks for introducing me to an instrument that I have been waiting for my whole life. I had to stop watching, every feature you mention is making me drool and I can't afford it! Love what you do.
Great video Alex ! Loving the example 4 personally . Gives me the Philippe Zdar (hope he is in a good place) and the 90's french disco vibes. Keep up your good work mate .
Interesting machine. Build to last. Liked the Idea of combining old twist with modern technology. Hope they'll add traditional dsp effects like delay or reverb
Been following the progression of this from Flux with it, to see it now fleshed out though, I am floored! Not that I’ll sell my octatrack for it but it is pretty sweet!
@@AlexBallMusicDefinitely! I'm looking forward to see what people do with it, especially those who love the original. Really enjoyed your demo tracks too by the way.
you have been a great addition to the launch of this mate, i simply cannot wait to get mine, they seem to be working the bugs out which is noice while we wait for this bleedin' boat to dock
Thanks for the support! Yes, bugsplatting is going on as are updates which then create new issues to be found, but it's coming together beautifully. I'm several firmware updates ahead of the public, but those will be coming to everyone else soon.
This was great and the video series sets a whole new standard for the industry. It would be nice to have a demonstration - step by step - of both the down-sampling recording process and the clocking with Eurorack for those of us who truly are green behind the ears and eager to learn. 👍
Cheers. The down-sampling was covered in the last tutorial video (video 7 / tutorial #6). The steps are: 1) Use line inputs 1&2 or phono 1 2) Sample at 26KHz 3) Pitch down after sampling 4) Use the classic audio engine 5) Engage the output filters Clocking will covered in tutorial #8 with all the midi and USB stuff. Tutorial #7 should be going live any moment, it covers outputs, output filters and panning.
@Alex Ball Thanks... I've just been working through the videos taking notes, but this helps a lot too, I think I missed the input 1 & 2 bit, thanks! Can't wait for your next videos, they've been great so far, cheers... ✌️😝
OVer 60 percent price increase is crazy right after launch. I donlt know if I've heard of that before. For that they should have put in a larger touch screen
There is actually *no piece of gear I want more* , and I had no clue that was the case before clicking this. Great demos, Alex! At least til I see the price tag 😟
I used to have an SP1200. It was just so cool and creative and intuitive. It was also glitchy and buggy and annoying. This looks à fantastic way to get back into the booming and a bapping.
I've got an SP1200 in the studio at the moment, yes it's got a thing about it even though it's so rudimentary and limited. The S2400 takes that spirit and just opens it up massively. But the basic stuff is all there if you want it.
Cheers Alex. Must admit I've avoided this overview for a few days on account of being skint and miserable, it's great ... sigh. Looking on the bright side, Don Muro !!! Thanks for the heads up, just astonishing stuff that's put a huge smile on me mush. Part musical marvel, part human octopus. I get the same feeling of awe as watching Marco Minnemann drumming, who started on organ with foot pedals interestingly. I shall be keeping this in mind for inspiration when I'm struggling to stomp on my looper pedal in time. Best wishes. :)
Yeah Don is fantastic. Some of the videos of him playing live back in the day with umpteen synths with hands and feet everyone are amazing. He's like Don Lewis in that regard, another synth hero. His music is eclectic and really well composed and arranged. I listen to him a lot. Nice guy to boot and was part of ARP and Korg back in the day too. Some of the factory stuff in the M1 was him.
I just subbed & hit the bell, b/c of your Utterly Spiffing Guide to Music. Amazing. Thanks so much for that. Found your channel b/c of your demo of pasttofuture's drums. Your channel is awesome.
Update: I got it. Man it sounds good. Really fun to sequence drums with. It's quirky and has a character of its own. Seriously though, it sounds good. I'm using samples on it that I hadn't used for ages because they weren't interesting enough to my ears. The S2400 seems to have really meaty outputs.
thanks for your videos! so,ehow, i’m not totally sold on the dsp filters. they sound harsh and cheap to my ears. i wish he would offer an analog filter option, as he once announced...
Sound good to me, but depends what you're running through them and how hard you're pushing them I guess. The big plus is being able to sequence the filter cutoff and resonance.
whoa bummer, doesn't even make sense to save up for it. 2000 after taxes is way outta my ballpark. I watched your video nonetheless, it's always great entertainment.
It's a serious piece of kit that's had a long lead-in with public input, price went up from $909 to $1,499 late last year as more and more was added following suggestions. Those who were early got a steal. :)
@@couchcamperTM It's a tough time for a lot of us to be spending that kind of coin. As a fellow budget-limited musician, If you're looking for something more affordable, and that is also a polyphonic sampler (you can sample your VSTs or classic synths note-by-note, and with some searching you can find many synths multi-sampled online for free in community groups), also with some decent plugins built-in, check out the Akai Force. It is arguably the best "standalone" sequencer/sampler on the market, even if it isn't perfect yet, and it is much more affordable. It even has a large touch screen interface and an 8x8 pad grid with a "note" mode so an extra keyboard isn't a necessity. I'm sure this ISLA machine can beat it in many regards, but for the price the Force can't be beat right now. It is one of the most under-appreciated pieces of gear on the market because until the recent 3.0.5 and 3.0.6 updates, it was really lacking. But now it has come into it's own, and hopefully the next updates will improve on some of the minor missing feature implementations.

@@ShroomJesus
_"I know what this machine sounds like"._
So you didn't listen to the A/B comparisons then? The plot thins.
_"it is click bate for kids who never touched a real sp"_
The word is "clickbait" and I'm not sure how a machine can be clickbait, but I assume you're saying that the nod to the SP is deliberate, which nobody is questioning.
_"your just another steamer chasing the clout"_
"Your" refers to possession like "your cat, your dog, your house". If you want to say "you are" then the contraction of "you" and "are" is "you're". That'll help you avoid undermining your own points in future. You're welcome.
_"Sorry I could Careless"_
The saying is "I couldn't care less". Careless is a separate word that means "not giving sufficient attention or thought to avoiding harm or errors" which is actually beautifully ironic here. Also, if you _could_ care less then that means that you care, but then judging by your comments and attitude, perhaps that is actually more fitting. ;)
_"F isla instruments"_
Such poetry.
Have a nice day George.
Great work as always! Its a deep box at this point. You've really shown all it can do with some tasty bits. Example 8 is my jam ! yes
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it's got plenty of features but it's easy to use.
Awesome overview of an awesome machine 👍
Loving the Boards of Canada esque beat at the end 👌
Thanks very much. Yes, it is awesome.
Wow! Really strong demo! You really showed how to appreciate the 2400 as a versatile instrument!
Thanks very much. Yes, it can really do whatever you want it to.
your examples are so serene
excellent demos and very informative, can't wait 'til my S2400 shows up
Thanks. Hope you get yours soon!
@@AlexBallMusic nice appearance on ProSynth Network today, say hi to Geert for me :-P
Yet another great and very informative video, great job dude!
Thanks Andy.
never been a fan of tiny screens and outboard step sequencers but i am slowly coming round to the idea of having a break from the monitor screens and feeling a bit more hands on. not sure if im 1500 interested but yeah
I've never seen your channel before but I'm very impressed. Great work.
Is this some kind of new fax machine?
Faxing is in the next update.
It will fax you ( brain delivery ) instant, quality features for sampling.
Great examples and the amount of features packed in for its release is astonishing.
its a joke featurewise compared to new mpcs or mc 707 tho
I like how this man makes good music. Can't wait for the upcoming album.
a very rare thing in the synth scene
Thanks very much. :)
@@lucasc5622 But the synth scene has synths, which is also very good.
There's scope for more things to be added I believe, I imagine delay and reverb are first on the list.
Thanks for a great upload, I’d love one of these beasts.
Been following the progression of this from Flux with it, to see it now fleshed out though, I am floored! Not that I’ll sell my octatrack for it but it is pretty sweet!
Yeah, they've really developed the concept nicely. It's come out great.
@@AlexBallMusicDefinitely! I'm looking forward to see what people do with it, especially those who love the original. Really enjoyed your demo tracks too by the way.
What a great review ! Thanks for your time !
*his hand movements alone made me want this machine .*
You are absolutte treasure. Those beats were totally awesome without exception.
Glad you like them!
Totally agree. This man is a unicorn. Damn magical.
I like how u have different demos of uses, nice one!
you have been a great addition to the launch of this mate, i simply cannot wait to get mine, they seem to be working the bugs out which is noice while we wait for this bleedin' boat to dock
The steps are:
1) Use line inputs 1&2 or phono 1
2) Sample at 26KHz
3) Pitch down after sampling
4) Use the classic audio engine
5) Engage the output filters
Clocking will covered in tutorial #8 with all the midi and USB stuff.
Those jazz hands are killing me 😂.. Great video by the way.
Excellent review, thank you!
Cool isn't it!
$1499(us)
A totally fair price!
@@AlexBallMusic Bibio is the master.
@@AlexBallMusic Someone else to checkout. Thanks!
This vid was the Mutts Nuts...thx. Get my S2400 this week....so psyched.
I just subbed & hit the bell, b/c of your Utterly Spiffing Guide to Music. Amazing. Thanks so much for that. Found your channel b/c of your demo of pasttofuture's drums. Your channel is awesome.
Thanks very much. It's been a long time since I did the 50s stuff, but it still lingers on my channel from the early days.
Great, something else I "need"!
😉
the end is wonderful all sampled in the sp2400 tell me :):)
What a great demo. I want one of these.
mine arrived yesterday and it’s a solid bit of kit 👌
Congratulations, welcome to the club.
That was a really cool sound you got outta that sampled 303! I always loved a funky tb303 line not too much overdone...
Is that an Orange OB-1 in the rack under the computer monitor? Lovely.
Going thru an existential crisis regarding this vs an MPC. Deciding at the end of the week regardless. Thx for all the info.
What did you choose?
nicely done Alex! and those demos 👌
Cheers Nik!
Excellent demo! Great video. Thanks
Cheers!
Descendant of the Iconic SP-1200, well done...
The BEST video out there on the S2400 - grrrrrrrreat!
Thanks Kate, much appreciated.
Wow, the machine is perfect! A lot more fun than an MPC Live or Maschine for sure.
Not sure how easy the chopping would be here… 🤔
So looking forward to getting mine tomorrow. :D
One for the future. Great vid as always 👍
That’s a beautiful machine! 😮
A decent number of seperate outs! At last, they're back.
I'm happy to see 5 pin midi plugs too.
Man, that Don Muro sample is delicious...
Awesome demo song bits! :D
Thanks!
thanks for your videos! so,ehow, i’m not totally sold on the dsp filters. they sound harsh and cheap to my ears. i wish he would offer an analog filter option, as he once announced...
Sound good to me, but depends what you're running through them and how hard you're pushing them I guess. The big plus is being able to sequence the filter cutoff and resonance.
I’ve been waiting for this video! I hope they paid you AND gave you the drum machine free!
They did and they did, because they're good guys.
The thing that really makes it for me is the jazz hands that you do. 🤣😂
Interesting, in which aspects should it be preferred over the Eletron Octatrack?
Digging this box! Would love to hear "Example 2" on streaming services.
whoa bummer, doesn't even make sense to save up for it.
@@AlexBallMusic it's great, it's just totally unaffordable in my case. I don't think it's to expensive for what it is, just for my bank account xD
@@couchcamperTM That's fair enough!
@@inthefade For some crazy sampler/looper stuff Reaktor has some great ensembles that can get you covered in just about every imaginable way.
There as a guy who had a couple of BCR2000 and BCF2000'.´:S hooked to a custom built ensemble that he did just about anything looping with!
Pete Rock and all thos 90's Hip-Hop Producers getting nervous over this one... great Video as allways Alex. Cheers
I am soo glad you didn't do a demo of the 808 or 909 sounds with that said now I really want one now!!!
I haven't put 808 or 909 sounds on it yet funnily enough. Probably because it's too obvious. :)
@@AlexBallMusic please don't the 808 and 909 are highly overrated put Simmons,Linn drum and DMX,Yamaha's RX series also

Still need a proper Boom Bap demo of this machine. Classic old break that we've all heard before, sampled the way they used to do it. But your jazz hands made up for it
