It breaks my heart. The characters in this game have great chemistry together, and thanks to the voice acting and the events they go though their chemistry feels real. Unfortunately, its overshadowed by the flawed gameplay and a bad story.

It looks and plays decent enough(excluding QTEs), but the story is bad in a "dumb story trying desperately to be smart" kind of way...

    • @sethtallman7281
      @sethtallman7281 3 года назад +3

@GoreMag Not only the QTE's, but constant tearing control away from the player to show that lever you just pulled opens the door YOU'RE STANDING RIGHT FUCKING NEXT TO, as if we're too goddamn retarded to figure it out ourself. That's my biggest gripe. The forced, unskippable cutscenes that take away all control from you, forcing you to stand still while the enemies are able to continue on as normal. Fuck that fucking garbage hand holding fucking feature. Constantly breaking immersion. Holy fucking shit!
That and that god awful driving sequences. FUCK!
Otherwise, the combat is super expressive and fun.

One thing I really hated about this game is that if you trigger a cutscene during a battle, the enemies don't stop moving while the cutscene plays. So, there will be times where a cutscene will trigger, and when it ends, there's an enemy right up your ass attacking you.

  • @quota2.0
    @quota2.0 6 лет назад +33

With all the things listed in this video, I have to add one more from my own personal view: The huge emphasis on melee fights. Personally, I don´t mind when Resident Evil games don´t have too much horror atmosphere as long you still have the "survival" aspect.
The fourth and fifth game did have more of an action feel, but you were still highly dependent on your guns. You had to use your ammo sparingly, because if you spend it all and bunch of enemies corner you, that is it. You are done for. The only last resort you have is the knife swinging that is highly ineffective. Survival aspect was still present in 4 and 5.
In Resi 6 however, you can just start mashing attack button and your character just brawls their way out of the trouble, doing kung fu moves on 3 or 4 zombies at once. :/

    • @quota2.0
      @quota2.0 6 лет назад +4

I meant: More action feel in comparison to old Resident Evil games (1, 2, 3, Code Veronica etc.)
The reason why I brought that up is because many people say that it started going downhill with Resident Evil 4 because that game started the new style of Resi games (with "over the shoulder" camera view and more shooting action).
But I defended 4th and 5th game because the survival aspect is still there, since you can only use a small knife when you spend all the ammo, while in Resi 6 you can do various melee moves on zombies (crushing their skull with punch, kicking their heads off) and that totally diminishes the survival aspect.
So my point is: 4, 5 and 6 all have action, but 4 and 5 still have survival vibe while 6th one does not.

    >stealth sections
Not required unless you're in an Ustanek section, and make the game harder by wasting your time
    >bad reactions
    Fair
    >bad ai
You used only ally AI in your examples, which don't really matter all too much. If you used examples of enemy AI, that'd be fine, but you didn't. The offline co-op AI is good (they finally ditched the making sure your partner doesn't die idea and gave them infinite handgun ammo) as is the enemy AI
    >bad gameplay when sprinting
Fair, but I never had any issues with that part of the gameplay. In fact, I had more issues with sprinting in REv2, during the Chapter 4 Claire section where you have to escape the tower, as they kept the automatic jumping when sprinting element, while you were on the edge of a tower and could fall off.
    >bloated content
The six different variations of gameplay are all right. I played the game on console, so I might've had a different experience to you as you used keyboard and mouse, but I didn't have trouble with the different sections of gameplay.
Normal TPS gameplay is just an improved variation of the gameplay found in RE4 and 5, and 6 made the gameplay a lot more unique with how deep the gameplay is, and while I could get into that, there's already been a couple 4chan posts about it I could probably dig up from my archive.
The stealth gameplay was already explained.
The driving was fine on console, I'm guessing it was an issue with the way you binded your controls on PC
Plane flying was also alright and took like 5 minutes if you knew what you were doing, same with turrets.
    >that fucking example you used
So, you got a guy and his friend, who apparently have never or have barely played Resident Evil, who don't even know that it has been action for over a decade at this point, and they played the demo and fucked off because it wasn't horror.
Hell, even the original RE games weren't horror.
RE1 was a schlocky homage to b-movies with godawful voice acting, fucking live action FMVs and later on was resold with some of the most out of place music. The gameplay in RE1 wasn't too good either, and not in a horror kind of bad controls, I'm not complaining about tank controls, fucking love them, but RE1s controls, after playing 2,3,Outbreak, CVX, REmake and 0 just feel really, really shit. Even in comparison to just the two games that came out after it they were pretty bad.
RE2 was a borderline action game with some horror elements. The game gave you the option to start the game with some of the most powerful weapons in the game from start, with infinite ammo, and even if you don't, there's enough ammo to have you at over 200 bullets for the handgun by the time you run into Claire at the police station. It also ended with fucking rock music and had Ex. Battle and Tofu Survivor, though admittedly, they are just extra modes.
RE3 on normal gave you most of the guns and a shitton of ammo, as well as an easy way to get magnum bullets right out of the gate, and the only real way to feel tense is to play it on hard, but there is no real reward for doing so other than the epilogue files, or the Nemesis items if you're a masochist.
REmake, 0 and CV were probably the only real scary games in the series, the former two for their tense atmosphere (opera singing and animu waifus aside) and the latter for its insane difficulty (FADDUUURR boy doesn't help the atmosphere though).
That was long winded, but back to the point, which is you got a guy who never played the series before, to play the 22nd game released in the series, 21st discounting RE Director's Cut, and the 9th mainline game chronologically, including 0, CVX and REv1. That's not a good fucking example mate, no matter how you spin, Resident Evil at this point, aside from the shitheap that was VII, is about as friendly to newcomers as majority of the Metal Gear series.

I also wanted to say that your review was well done and thank you for the thirty minutes of entertainment. Keep up the good work! I am curious to hear your thoughts on Resident Evil 7. So far, I think it is showing a lot of potential and it looks like Capcom is finally learning their lesson, trying to use what makes Resident Evil unique and bringing it to its full potential.
I had a better experience with Resident Evil 6 overall and there were parts I managed to like. However, I agreed with a lot of what you said and I had a lot of other problems your review did not have time to encompass. I did not experience the coop mode, online mini-games such as Agent Hunt, and extensive time on Mercenaries (since I was satisfied with Resident Evil 4/5), but I can dissect everything else.
As with you, I thought the graphics, cutscenes, music, and voice acting were all fantastic. I liked all the protagonists and the story arcs some of them go through, especially Chris, Piers, Jake, and Sherry. I welcomed the return of puzzles. I felt it made more improvements for controls and partner system than downgrades over Resident Evil 5 (albeit still had huge flaws). It was fun to finally fight zombies again, even though the new types were not as good as the original zombies, crimson heads, and lickers that the T-Virus made. And it did introduce five of my favorite monsters, which I found creative, fit the RE franchise like a glove, and allowed for some gameplay/boss segments I enjoyed: Lepotitsa, Rasklapanje, Iluzja, Ustanak, and Haos (I hated parts of his fight as you mentioned, but I thought the creature itself was neat).
Now here are all of the other problems I had with this game, which were not already stated in your review:
*Lack of Compelling Villain Goal/Motivation:* While I liked the game's main characters, the heroes are often only as good as their main villain, and Derek Simmons was the story's weak link for me. I am not a professional writer, but even I came up with a lot of ways they could have (re)written his character and the story, to give Derek Simmons' group more of a motivation for their terrorist actions, tie his character back to Umbrella better, and give him a goal to be working towards, which would also flesh out all the previous Resident Evil stories, regarding what Umbrella was striving for. To keep this from getting too long, I am not elaborating on them, unless you are curious and have time on your hands.
*The C-Virus Itself:* Its abilities are inconsistent and make no sense, it destroys the uniqueness of all the previous biological agents and monsters, and its lack of limitations creates plot-holes. Even the five new C-Virus monsters I did enjoy could have easily been products of the Tyrant Virus, G-Virus, and t-Abyss virus, so adding the C-Virus did nothing good to the franchise.
*Some Nonsensical Monsters:* You got the indestructible monster that can spontaneously sprout a chainsaw arm. The mutated Carla Radames was basically a hybrid of Clayface from "Batman" and the Great Mighty Poo from "Conker's Bad Fur Day". And the worst is definitely the mutated Derek Simmons, the giant organic transformer that changes between a human, dog, T-Rex, and fly, and gives the middle finger to the Law of Conservation of Matter. The only part I could find enjoyable, if I throw my sense of reality out the window, was when he turned into the giant fly and you needed to use a lightning rod to defeat him. Other than that, it was painful slog, where the developers were seemingly unable to decide what his form should be or how to kill him, so they threw it all together in a marathon. And once the developers were done showcasing their ideas, Derek Simmons conveniently dies by being impaled, when far worse things had no effect on him. What makes the monsters of RE great is that their abilities and the means they are created are based on real biotechnology and how actual living creatures operate, albeit with simplified/exaggerated science. That is to me, what contributes to the monsters having this scary presence.
*Other Obstacle Course Problems:* When you ranted about segments, like running away from Haos at the end of Chris's campaign, running away from the Tank in Jake's campaign, and the vehicle chases, you summed up my experience perfectly. I also had other issues. During the subway sequence in Leon's campaign, there were times I was not even on the train tracks, yet the cutscene of Leon getting run over by the train was activated, giving me a game over. Also, during the flooded submarine of Ada's campaign, instead of giving you an overall timer for the segment, it would give you a set amount of time for each individual room. So it does not matter if you blew through the first few rooms with time to spare. If you lagged for one moment in one room, you automatically died.
*Excessive Overblown Set-pieces:* They removed any feeling of subtlety or scary atmosphere that Leon's campaign especially needed and they made the protagonists look superhuman, which does not work in a survival horror franchise, where you are supposed to feel like a vulnerable everyman. It is as though Paul Ws Anderson, the director of the live-action RE movies, suddenly took over and wanted to turn all the characters into his Mary Sue, Alice.
*Inventory/Upgrading:* Another huge problem with the inventory system is that it forces you to carry every single firearm with you. Every time you acquire a new weapon, you still get the same total amount of ammo, but you get less of each individual type. So by the end of the game, you barely have one clip for each gun and you are constantly running out of room, because each ammo type needs its own inventory space. So the game ironically becomes less playable, the more guns you have, especially since you only need four at most to handle the different situations you come across. And I thought the whole skill point system was godawful. You are only allowed to equip three purchased skills at once in a set. However, you can make multiple sets that you can switch between while playing the game. So it is awkward as hell, because you can use almost any skill you purchase, yet at the same time you can't. This game should have had the system of Resident Evil Revelations 2. In that game, you hold four guns at once, store extra weapons in item crate, can actually DROP items on the ground and directly share them between partners, upgrade your guns with custom parts, can use infinite ammo and special weapons as a separate option, and use all the skills you buy at once in the game. Revelations 2 even provides a dodge mechanic that is intuitive and easy to use, but still requires some skill in learning how to use it effectively.
*Melee Attacks Too Useful During Survival Horror Segments:* When the game is trying to imitate the survival horror feel, it is also botched because normal melee attacks are overpowered. You can punch your way through groups of zombies and even kill these genetically-engineered monsters with your bare hands (only the superhuman Jake Muller should be able to fight B.O.W.s that way). So there is little to no tension when you are cornered by a zombie or running low on ammo. If they wanted to give a melee combat system, that could transition between survival horror and action, they could maybe take lessons from "The Evil Within." Make your normal punches very weak, require you to carry a knife, stun rod, axe, etc. with you for melee attacks to do decent damage, and make it so that you cannot perform stealth kills or critical hits/finishers to stunned enemies/bosses unless you pull out your knife or Jake Muller's hand-to-hand combat.
*Everything Involving the J'avo:* Every time I fought the J'avo (which is at least 50% of the game), it felt like I got teleported into a generic third-person Call of Duty game. They look, behave, attack, and die like regular people and do not provide any unique gameplay that Resident Evil is known for. The only time they feel like actual monsters is when they occasionally mutate. The style of their mutations however is pretty much a repeat of the Las Plagas parasites, so there was really no reason to introduce them into the franchise.
*Linear Levels:* My main problem is the lack of open exploration, which is one of the original games' strength. The levels are mostly mindless linear shooting galleries, without any back-tracking, investigation, option to run away or fight, and ability to complete objectives in your own order. Jake's campaign could have benefitted the most from this, seeing how it was trying to imitate "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis" with Ustanak. But instead of creating the feeling you are being chased, it just feels like one boss you are scripted to fight multiple times. I also did not like the game forcing you to slow down your walking because it was too lazy to give you an environment with enough tension and atmosphere to make you want to explore slowly, carefully, and thoroughly.

Of all the complaints agaisnt RE6, I've always found complaints against the UI and the Inventory system so unjustified. Anyone who has ever played a video game before will be able to understand the HUD within minutes of play once. Not once did I ever stop and ask myself "I wonder which is my health" or "I wonder which shows my clip versus total ammo". That aside, the inventory system is very simple. With just a little practice, you can quickly combine and add herbs to your case in an instant. You can scroll through weapons at lightning speeds, so having to do it 1 by 1 isn't exactly a big issue. The only issue with the UI in my opinion is that you also do not pause the game when adjusting options, even in single-player, which is just stupid.

The HUD is fine, I had no issues with it, the inventory system on the other hand... It's the most unintuitive trash I got to play, made worse by the randomized loot in-game, and i'm not making this up, there was a point when I ran out of ammo, I desperately needed it, for an entire chapter everything I found in crates and from enemis was NOTHING BUT SKILL POINTS.

Unpopular opinion but this is actually my favorite RE game. I get that RE is supposed to be survival horror and that's why a lot of peeps give it the thumbs down. I agree with a lot of what is said here about why its bad, but as a fighting game player I had a blast playing this game because of the combat mechanics. The way you could go from running to sliding, the melee system, stunning a zombie with a headshot and finishing him off with a tornado DDT felt very satisfying. And also, why is nobody talking about the SICK ASS PARRIES? You can parry the zombies, my dude! Its like Resident Evil meets Dead or Alive. Enough said, 10/10 lol

Resident Evil 6 isn't bad, it's just different. There are other RE games for both types of audiences, like RE 7. RE 6 out of the box also has more content than any other RE game released including the best version of the mercenaries game mode. Any one who hates this game should hate RE 4 too. Both games are boneheaded schlock action with a horror tone. So enjoy them for what they are and if you want what many would consider true resident evil then go play the traditional games or the new 7. There are also plenty of other non RE horror games, which is why I don;t understand why so many get so passionately hateful over this game.

I really enjoyed RE6 and I still play it to this day! The game never really explains the fighting mechanics, so you have to get use to and figure them out on your own (even after playing for 5+ years, I still figure new things out every now and then), but once you understand how to make the characters move the way you want them to, its a blast! I love fighting in re6, sometimes I'll completely disregard shooting and opt for melee, because it's so damn fun. Getting up close with zombies and j'avo are a breeze and once you learn to counter, taking any actual damage will become very rare. The game has its flaws and I will not play certain chapters because of them, but RE6 has GREAT mechanics to exploit, the problem is it just doesn't tell you how to, or even about them: which is why many people HATE this game with a passion- oh, and it's not survival horror like the original entries in the franchise, that too. :P

This is a really fun coop game. I never had any of the problems he had... the real problem with this game is that people expected survival horror and they delivered a more action packed style of zombie game.. the only valid complains are the interface that could be confusing but it's overstated ,the vehicles could handle better, however the driving parts were designed to make you feel like you barely made it and with smooth controls that would not be achieved, and the movement of the characters ,wich is a RE staple and has been improved in this game ,unfortunately in RE they can't really give you perfect movement because if they did nothing would be a threat .Also about sharing itens... you absolutely can share itens... maybe they fucked up the pc version but in the others i played you can share itens it's a big part of the cooperative experience. The last boss on chris campaign does react when you shot where you should be shooting ( the huge red globs on him)...

@@Chaudexpower some of the stuff in this particular video is starting to make me question some of his other reviews, obviously story and gfx are easy to see when it's presented in front of you on YT but controls in this game are really damn solid. Opting to play KB/M and complaining without even checking gamepad makes me think he doesn't go as in-depth in some of the games, using a non-analog KB/M on a fluid vaulting shooter makes barely more sense than using KB/M on simulator-style racing. As for items, you can share items in split-screen but online people get their own drops, you're probably better off playing on network because you're going to have twice the ammo between the two of you, that was another weird thing to complain about.

Making accurate shorts are easy and movement is all right. The only problems was in the chase sections because of disorienting fixed camera changes with controls' direction. I'm agree with arguments about inventory management and transport controls maybe, but it is still solid and fun game imo.

I always find it weird about how Resident Evil in general (to my knowledge) do the Discard thing. Like you said, you don't just drop it, you made it unusable and unable to pick up. How? Well, I like my own head-canon:
    - Herbs: You probably shred them into bits.
    - Guns: Smash them like an electric guitar.
    - Bullets: Take them out one by one from the ammo box, throw them around, bullets got lost like guitar picks.
    - First Aid Spray: Just sprayed anywhere BUT youself.
    - Grenade: ... I have no clue for this one. Disassembled?

  • @RoyStantz

Hey DXFan619, I'd like to give my two pence worth on RE6, which is not as hated as the public thinks. Hell, all the controversy and shit just gets it a 70% on average from user votes.
I've played the game, and even though there are a couple of flaws, I still enjoyed it. Besides, Leon and Ada's campaigns are the closest to that Resident Evil atmosphere as you can get.
It's OK to love a game despite its flaws. There are plenty of games I love that have major problems to them (such as Final Fight Streetwise, yes I am guilty as charged for loving it). Hell, a lot of games people love have problems to them. For example, Starcraft was loaded with dozens of glitches that caused the game to freeze (try having an SCV repair a unit that's going into a dropship). Also, Soul Calibur 4 doesn't count sword slashes that go through heads as a hit.
Part of being a gamer is realising that you can enjoy games based on their merits alone, and that just because a game didn't live up to the hype doesn't mean that it's not fun.
Besides, if the Resident Evil franchise did nothing but carry on sticking to the old Alone in the Dark-esque gameplay engine with no improvements instead of switching over to the over-the-shoulder third-person shooter formula, Capcom would've been slagged off for not moving on anyway.
You know, you just can't win them all every time, and I get the feeling that gamers have high standards, sometimes *WAY TOO HIGH* for their favourite franchises to meet.
    Just saying.
