Thanks for the video! I turned my dining table 90degrees last night after watching this so no-one has their back to the patio doors. My children think I'm mad, but we'll see what it's like at dinner tonight!🤩
I really enjoy your content. It's not something I usually look for but I watch everything that pops up from you. Very interesting and makes perfect sense. Thanks!!!
It's so nice to see how far you've come. You are so confident now, it's amazing :) I will be moving soon and my new apartment has a dining/living room just like this. And although it makes more sense to have a table closer to the kitchen, I still feel it will be better if it's closer to the window. Because that's a balcony and any seating arrangement gets in the way of the doors....It's a good problem to have tho
Hello there! Thank you for your advises, they helped a lot. You mentioned that clocks are not advisable in the dining area. What is the best place for a clock, then? So, we will know. 😁
I think a low rack will improve the segregation between the dining and living room without sacrificing the light from the window. Plus it can be used as coffee table and extra storage.
Generalized question to fellow followers- does this means that a round table that expands with 3 leaves that turns into a round edged rectangle works? It'sa north facing dining room and has the most natural light. This expanded usage happens during mainly on holidays and celebrations and during occassional fancy-ware sewing...like Renaissance Faire Festivals, Fairy Festivals, and weddings....the cloth used for fancyware is not common everyday fabric like blue jeans. It's more like $25-$50 a yard.
What about chairs at the end of the table? In the rectangle table, you leave the ends chairless. Is that because it would put someone's back to the window and wall?
Clocks! Where do clocks go? I believe in other videos you’ve mentioned that clocks don’t belong on the bedroom, and now the dining room/area. I imagine this would also be true for the social area of a living room. So where? I need to know the time and like being able to just look up at the wall and see it.
We have a dining table in our living room similar to this. But trying to fit a TV with more than two sofa seats and a garden door in the top right which should remain accessible is proving difficult. Our top wall however goes all the way to the door, which you have to leave to get to the kitchen on the other side of that top wall. Any ideas?
Hi there. Thanks for the video. I have a oval glass dining table. I also have a open wood and glass etagre in the corner of the dining room. I moved to a smaller place a year ago and my existing pieces don't fit well. You can't get around the table easily. Should I move the etagre from the dining area? I have an open living room/ dining room area. Thanks for the help. 🌹
My dinning room is really difficult, I have 2 doors on one wall, a window on the second wall, a door and openplan to the kitchen on the third wall. Not sure where to put a table that guest won't have their backs to at least a door or window 🤔 xxx
I have similar, and can't do a round table as it wouldn't fit in the space with people seated (in fact, the only place they could sit with a round table would have them all with backs directly to door/window, etc)
I have a round shaped light fixture right in front of the door way like in the video. So a round table I think works the best since chi will flow around a round table??? And a round table under a round light fixture looks and feel right! I think I’m learning!
Speaking of dining room, I heard having the stove directly across from the kitchen sink is not good. Living in an apartment, I can't necessarily change this😅. Is there a way to balance this?
The reason why this is not good is because water and fire are clashing elements and represent conflict. It is however common for compact kitchens these days arranged like that and I wouldn't be too worried. Of course if you are feeling uneasy about this, you may try to introduce plants between them to introduce an element of wood to mediate this disparity. Of course modern fengshui is all about interpretation, because these days stoves may be induction for example, with no fire at all.
@@DearModern Okay, I will try introducing plants. Your suggestions are very helpful by bringing knowledge on how to balance in my life. This is important to me and enriches my life. Thank you for all that you do. 🙂
Cliff, what do I do if the dining room is a walkthrough? There's access to the kitchen, bathroom and office all from the dining room. How could I adjust this to make it a welcoming space?
Best option would be to switch the dining area with the couch, try it out for a week and you could always switch it back if it doesn't work for your space. The dining area right in the entryway is a big no no.
1. Place a bench/ side table/coffee table/small stool /extra chair/ shoe rack along the wall right by the door as a catch-all for the bags 2. Add a large basket/ cardboard box to designate a space for scarves/ mittens/ hats, etc. 3. Add a small tray or cardboard box or decorative bowl for keys, wallets and ID tags 4. If possible, make use of basic wall hooks / nails / pegs (atleast for the keys & scarves) to clear up some space on the flat surfaces. 5. Add a mat to indicate a designated spot for guests' shoes/ weather-appropriate shoes. ***If none of this is possible, try to have a closed shoe cupboard at your waist-level and keep the surface free except for a small bowl or cardboard box or tray (worked for me in my dorm)***
Is there a reason why you didn't put the sofa on the opposite wall? The table could have stayed in the area you suggested and you could have separated the living room with a bookcase without blocking light to the table. Is there something wrong about that other wall?
I am struggling a little bit with this as I have spacious dining room and small child. I would like to have more space for my kid and this is why I am thinking about having table more in the corner of the room.
Dear Modern what do you think about having your dining table as your working space (with a laptop, not a heavy computer). So you could 1. work there, 2. let's be real, working at home we eat with the computer paying youtube or something, so work and eat (alone) and 3. when hosting people clearing the table of all work related stuff and making it nice and cozy (with fruits in the center of the dining table^^). Is it good Feng Shui?
...and if you don't have a rectangular table then a triangle is fine, and if you don't have a triangular table then a pentagram is fine, and if you don't have a pentagram than a hyperbolic paraboloid is fine. So now you know!
I have cats. The table is currently tucked in a small room, and we end up never using it. I COULD move it to the big room and follow these practices, but then the cats would get their dirty paws all over it. Advice?
You could try giving your cats something else that is taller than the table? They like climbing on things and have an instinct to be up high. Maybe a tall cat tower or wall shelves/platforms?

I'm looking for tips on placing this big table in a smaller dining room that's adjacent to the kitchen and stairs going down :/
So good content!! Appreciate it 😀
I’m working on my soon to be home in my home design app, and I only have a small “dining corner”, no matter what I do, it seems so sad and lonely. 🥺
Can you please do a video where is the better way to put a stairs ☺️

Scoot table toward the 4 patio doors .. this leaves plenty room for home office toward the opposite wall.
Danke 💕. I love your videos
1:21 I literally placed my table like that because of this video.
I love this videos and Little furnitures 😍😍
You need a round dining table piece and to reemphasize that round is preferred! No one else is sharing that.
He said it
He said that, but absolutely no one i know has a round table.

If the sofa is put against the opposite wall, then it's right in front of the main door. The "chi" will crash into the people on the sofa.
If you put plants and lamps on divider wall, wouldn't that divert the chi?
How about dual purpose dinning pool table? Love to maximize space and yet have a pool table.
This is the problem in my studio apartment. How do I submit a solution request 😖😭

How about circular dining table?

What about a square table?

A triangle is the *worst* furniture shape. All pointy edges. Both from energy and also safety hazard standpoints
What if you moved and now it feels like the DR table is too big so it’s against a wall..?
Downsize, if possible!

My living room is the dining room. The lounges are the dining chairs and the coffee table is the dining table.
Cos I'm not at all wealthy 😂

We use a squirt bottle. But I'm sure our cats go on the table when we're not there.
