Very often we make compromises to our spaces simply to allow cupboards to remain accessible, yet we only open them once a year or less, its a quirky solution I admit, but definitely worth considering if necessary!:)

I have read about Swedish death cleaning and practice partially by taking pictures of memorabilia items that I can have on my "cloud". Easy access whenever I want and actually more practical since it is possible to find even by searching text f.ex. if what I need is on a page in a book I had. I even digitalised old photos. So I keep only necessary, really precious items.
‼️ I recommend a hope chest or a memory chest for anyone who has a lot of sentimental items they just don't want to throw away. My great-grandmother had one, my grandmother had one, my mom has one and now I have one. It's usually a large wooden chest that's placed at the end of the bed and all of the keepsakes like stuff your children make you or pictures or cards from birthdays, handmade blankets etc go in. And usually a cushion is placed on top of it and since it's at the end of your bed you can sit things on it or sit on it to put your shoes on. So that way it has one place for all your sentimental items so they don't get misplaced or lost and all of the stuff is hidden and it looks really nice and put together. Plus you get a second use out of it as a sitting place. It doesn't have to go at the end of your bed that's just where everyone in my family puts it. If you're the type of family to take your shoes off at the front door it could look nice around that area too. And because of it's limited size it also kind of keeps you from becoming a hoarder as well. If something doesn't fit in that box then you don't need to keep it. So it's easier to part with larger items since you already have a bunch of sentimental stuff stored away you don't feel the need to keep literally everything. ❤️

What I learned from living in a Tokyo shoebox apartment for 5 years 1) you never have too much storage, more is always better 2) go up. There is a lot of empty space on walls under the ceiling. Your cabinets don't need to be a tall as you are, they can be 2.5m and provide ample space.
The wording “not as tall as you are” can imply shorter rather than taller, where “not only as tall as you are” implies it being taller (for anyone else who may be struggling to wrap your mind around the wording)

The funny thing about Hope Chests is they were originally for a girl to gather and store the things she was going to take with her to set up her new home when she got married. I guess this their second life!
@@PaulaZF yeah you're right! Im pretty sure that's how it started with my great-grandmother. It originally had everything she needed to start off her married life. And she just stored all of her special items in there including her wedding dress. And so my grandmother did it and then my grandmother bought my mom her hope chest when she got married and then I got one when I was married! So I'm fairly sure that's where the tradition started! I think women should restart this for sure! Especially women who have a lot of sentimental items and get attached them, i think it's cool to take something with a history like this and give it new life and new purpose! ❤️
I’m an artist with lots of hobbies. My SO’s a minimalist and their hobbies are drumming and video games. We have had so many fights about my clutter, but it’s because there is no storage in our place, and I tend to custom build everything we need that take time, energy and money. So I really appreciate that you did up the space and acknowledged that it needed better organization and for the client to keep their belongings and art supplies. 💕💕💕😭
I have a similar issue; husband is a gamer/computer engineer so he doesn't have much clutter at all, meanwhile I'm a traditional painter that's also into digital illustration, sculpting, gardening, baking, carpentry, sewing, packaging and shipping supplies, and have a dog that I purchase more items for than myself, etc etc. I've managed to minimalize lesser hobbies, but everything else that I use often (which is a lot...) I call my "organized chaos". As long as my items don't clutter up the common space, he's fine with me doing my own stuff. I also try to rotate items/hobbies out of storage to see if I still am attracted to that hobby/materials or not, if not then I just sell the items as a bundle or donate it.
I'm a gamer and I still have a lot of clutter, lol... But I also believe that minimalism is a silly, virtue-signaling concept and most minimalists probably have a rented storage space somewhere else for stuff they need for hobbies (or they are really boring people)... In any case, I think a truly minimalist flat looks cold, soulless, unpersonal and dead (as in nobody actually lives in it) like a purpose-built AirBNB room. Heck, not even IKEA and co. Shiwcase their furniture in minimalist settings!
Thanks for acknowledging that makers have to have physical stuff, like paper trimmers and paper. Wow! What a great transformation with clever thinking and design skills as the main fuel.
This was SUCH a good illustration of how simple changes can alter the vibe and energy of a space. I feel like I learned a lot from just this one short video. Wow.
What revolutionized my thinking - the Minimal Mom talks about a memory bin where you can keep important sentimental items safe that you don’t want on display (I keep old toys and other things over the years) which also provides a container which is not permitted to overflow. I’ve gotten rid of a LOT of things I don’t use and don’t need and my home is so much more peaceful. Energy more freely moves through the space and even though I have a small house, it feels so much more spacious and of course it’s easier to clean now too! Minimalism and Essentialism are growing to be important pillars in my life to maintain a peaceful home.
I love how affordable your changes are, as they are mostly based on moving pieces around. I am learning a lot, as I have trouble visualizing, it is really helpful! And I love how creative you are about placing furniture too!
Fantastic! It feels calmer in the after layout. Well done! I've only ever seen your "short" videos and much prefer this length and would love to see even longer videos of this type where you make over someone's space. Before and after are great!
This video is a WINNER! It combines so many of my favourite things; home design, storage solutions, The Barbican and Ikea. Please do lots more small homes. Your approach to possessions is realistic and your designs are inspiring.
The end result looks so nice. So many people would just tell her: move out to a bigger flat, or get rid of your stuff. But I like it that you understand that getting rid of things is often not an option and not everybody can afford or even wants to live in a bigger flat/house. Great solution. Also nice tips at Ikea.
Love your videos! Layout problems are crippling my progress, so it's very helpful to see how you take a situation that has challenges and work with it to create beauty and functionality and a good vibe!
Would you ever have believed that you would have almost 2 million subscribers on this platform, no idea of the others…just by being yourself and sharing how to be comfortable in our spaces! Western living doesn’t teach anything like this. So it is new and so full of explanations of why we are so uncomfortable. I had the pleasure of having a Feng Shui expert redo our entire workspace. What an amazing difference. So, in case you haven’t heard it enough…thank you ❤
Excellent in every way- you are so knowledgeable, but also so insightful and caring, to help give us as much information as possible and encourage us to have the best space possible ❤
my girlfriend and I are downsizing to a small apartment soon and we need to be really aware of what to bring, what to store and where we will put the stuff we will bring to the new place. This was very informative and inspiring, thank you 😊 also, on a different note, that zoom in and zoom out from before to after at 7:22 was flawless 😎👌🌟
It's amazing how such small but thoughtful changes can really make a difficult space more than tolerable. Inspiring! We just got downsized by half with a family of 6 and, not knowing about this kind of stuff, intuitively made a lot of the same decisions!
I never respected feng shui much until these videos. Goes to show how much the person who applies the theory matters- you always take a very practical approach rather than descending into superstition.
What a transformation from simple changes. Loved this video, particularly as I lived in an identical flat in the Barbican for 2 years. It brought back lovely memories, its a very nice place to live. I had few possessions then, so I found I had enough space, but I think I too would have run out after a few years... we all accumulate more as time goes on, it's inevitable. They never factor storage into the equation when building new flats.
My big hurdle I run into when trying to reorganize my furniture is that I have awkwardly placed outlets in my apartment, and only 2 of them, so if I tried to use an extension cord to "move" them into busier areas, I would possibly trip over them... Such a chore!
Can you attach the to a wall or put them on a shelf? You can use cable clips (there are removable stick on ones if you're renting) to hold the cable in place up out of the way.
I have a very similar issue (I have 3 plugs in my bedroom and 1 is permanently dead, the other 2 are like 2 feet apart) so I have extension cords that I have run along the baseboard with cord hiding things, and taped to the floor/under the furniture with rugs over them
I love your alternative to filming your IKEA search for solutions. Now I need to go back and take notes and see if I have my 6th sense/intuition in line with Feng Shui colors. JOB WELL DONE
This is definitely my favorite video with the ikea montage 😂😂👌 but yeah it's so amazing how you can add two bits of furniture in a room that looks overwhelming full... And now it looks like there is more space!!! So crazy
Great video! also kuddos to the client who went through the painful process or reorganizing and deciding to put things in their new places, it's not an easy task!

Love this. The art on her fridge still looks too busy and the stuff behind the couch looks messy but you did the best you could to accommodate the client. Love
This is the first time I've seen you actually add something, but the finished apartment is so much more inviting. There is now a place to sit and relax - look out the window, read, watch TV. Just what you need when you come home from dealing with a big city. You did the only possible solution that still results in good chi - go up. Stack things to utilize the space. Brilliant!
It's weird I never knew this was a thing, for years I have used graph paper for my room layouts, each square would represent one foot (12 inches). And the same for the pieces of furniture in the room I was doing, graph paper with cardboard stuck on, very basic representation but its quick and works for me. Great video❤️
Someone divided people into learning styles in 4 Groups and one was “model builder”. It’s one of the less common styles. There’s also “quick starter” (wants to learn by doing/ trial and error) , and researcher (will not start anything until full research has been done, then will do a thing to completion at a speed very unlike the quick starter, and I forget the 4th one.
Enjoyed the bonus lesson at Ikea and that you show before, after and share your process and teaching! I am certified in interior decorating and have had an interest in feng shui which I have casually studied for decades. I think your fun videos are a very nice change from researching feng shui in books, plus are you married? Teehee
Great improvement, a good outcome with minimal expense. What I can’t understand is why the blinds are pulled down in daytime. What horrendous sight are we being shielded from?
Thank you so much for sharing these transformations of real life home spaces. You share with so much enthusiasm, humour and understanding for how people struggle with furniture placement in their homes and open our minds to flow, fun and clarity. More power to you. Let the good vibes flow.
She has a bunch of space up by the ceiling where she could put up floating shelves with doors. Essentially, all that storage behind the sofa could go above the sofa and floating storage units could go all along to the other wall. All she needs are the bolts. Then the sofa can go against the wall and the room opens up bigger. She could even have a longer sofa.

1) you never have too much storage, more is always better
2) go up. There is a lot of empty space on walls under the ceiling. Your cabinets don't need to be a tall as you are, they can be 2.5m and provide ample space.
Are you 3m tall?
@@solb101 no, but I have this thing called a chair to stand on an reach things high up. Mind blowing, right?
@@IreneWY Incredible! I misinterpreted your words. Was thinking the other way round. 😂
The wording “not as tall as you are” can imply shorter rather than taller, where “not only as tall as you are” implies it being taller (for anyone else who may be struggling to wrap your mind around the wording)

i love this idea!! ❤️
The funny thing about Hope Chests is they were originally for a girl to gather and store the things she was going to take with her to set up her new home when she got married. I guess this their second life!
I have one and your comment about how you can use it to sit on as a bench has inspired me to put it to some casual use ! Thank You !
Mine is an" Immigrant Trunk" not a Hope Chest. My folks Immigrated from Ohio to Kansas after the Civil War
I was like you but my SO left me because of this and among other things…. 😹
Same. Always going on and on about my ‘mess’ 😒
@@amtra1778 hehe. We have a lot of the same hobbies!!!!
Loved this! Want more like it for sure! I giggled at the IKEA bit! Love your warm personality and joyous expression!
That was great
Thanks for acknowledging that makers have to have physical stuff, like paper trimmers and paper.
He made that space so much more grounded and inviting. It looked like an office, now it looks like a home.
“Clutter is only clutter when you don’t want it.” -Cliff Tan
So true….so true!
Just found you. I love your gentle energy and positivity. You solved all the clients problems and created calm out of chaos.
You became one of my favourite channel within light speed. Your fun personality and your sound advices are very enjoyable!! Thank you 🙏☺️
oh my God, you had me at Barbican. I love this architecture. I love these apartments. I love you.
Ok I'm decided, as we live in the same city I am definitely gonna pay for your consultation when I move flats later this year. You work miracles!
So, in case you haven’t heard it enough…thank you ❤
Very clever! Great result.
The screaming was hilarious. 🤓😂❤
Excellent in every way- you are so knowledgeable, but also so insightful and caring, to help give us as much information as possible and encourage us to have the best space possible ❤
Man, i need you to tell me how to style my studio apartment. This was great!
my girlfriend and I are downsizing to a small apartment soon and we need to be really aware of what to bring, what to store and where we will put the stuff we will bring to the new place. This was very informative and inspiring, thank you 😊 also, on a different note, that zoom in and zoom out from before to after at 7:22 was flawless 😎👌🌟
Somehow it looks bigger. Bless you
It's amazing how such small but thoughtful changes can really make a difficult space more than tolerable. Inspiring! We just got downsized by half with a family of 6 and, not knowing about this kind of stuff, intuitively made a lot of the same decisions!
Cliff, I LOVE your personality!!! It shines through even on a rainy day. So much rizz! 😃
The changes you made to her space is terrific. It really looks beaut 😊
I never respected feng shui much until these videos. Goes to show how much the person who applies the theory matters- you always take a very practical approach rather than descending into superstition.
First organiser who did not come in and „pare you down“ - hes a keeper
You are so funny and super talented to rearrange everything so it looks so nice!
I love this channel. You're so enjoyable to watch
Thank you so much! :)
I can't believe how it looks even more spacious even though you put EXTRA stuff in the room ! Magician!
I loved that he took us to Ikea with him!!! So fun and educational!!!
Wonderful. It almost looks like a showroom for minimalist design (in a good way)
I love how you extended the pictures on the wall to create width - so clever.
Ohhh that looks amazing! Much calmer with the loose things put away!
Fabulous, lovely little cosy space now. Such a good idea having behind sofa storage.
Another option might be to run the cords under a rug
I have a very similar issue (I have 3 plugs in my bedroom and 1 is permanently dead, the other 2 are like 2 feet apart) so I have extension cords that I have run along the baseboard with cord hiding things, and taped to the floor/under the furniture with rugs over them
Damn! Crazy magic man does it again!
I love your channel! Your mask slipping was driving me nuts!😂 pinch the nose so it stays on snug and cozy. Thank your for sharing your gift!
Me too !
I love your channel ! You are so professional and creative, high energy and a playfulness that is entirely engaging !
I actually exclaimed "WOW" when I saw the transformation.. she is probably thrilled.
And your comments, time capsule & clutter is only if they're things you don't want , are enlightening too
Love your storage solution and that the visual clutter is gone. Looks so calm and a place to come home and relax.
Eye opening work. You had help me and so many realize the importance of making sure one achieve the most balance arrange when it come to your living space. Keep inspiring people to improve their lives immensely with your work 🙏🏼👏
Sir, you are a master of small spaces. I am so happy that I found your channel. 😊
as an architect nerd I absolutely adore this place
Yes, but would you live in it?
7:22 Awesome upgrade!
That was so fun to watch. You sure made a big difference and made that apartment look neat and tidy.
Wow, great job making this space so much cleaner and functional. That sofa and putting away the clutter change the whole vibe of the room.
The Ikea trip was so informative I hope they are taking notes xD I LOVE these videos by the way!
Found you on Facebook and I'm totally hooked. AND "now you know" makes my day every time you say it! Thanks for sharing.
I like how you put the table. Thanks !
You have fine tuned you delivery and Patter in the last three years. Quite encouraging to see your development. You don't seem to age much also 🙂
You’re a delight! Thanks for your useful tips.
Thank you!
This us brilliant! Humour and style. Thank you! I will be watching more.
Love these - yes please share more flat reorganisations
Wow - you're amazing with your organisational skills and making space look and feel stylish at the same time with GOOD ENERGY! I'm impressed :)
Hey love the video man very relaxing
Haha I never thought it would be relaxing especially since I talk so fast!
@@DearModern I find these videos really relaxing 😌 keep them coming I also do learn a lot from you 😁
I love your energy and your work 🥸
The advice to avoid open shelves in the bedroom creates a real challenge for bibliomaniacs!
TRUTH! Fooey on Kindles and such. Need to feel the book and smell the book.
Once you jam them full of books, they’re no longer open!
@@sophierobinson2738 That's one of the things I tell myself! ;-)
Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, problem solved 😁
i just use the library
Ah so amazing.. will look back to this video for my flat when I'm energetic enough to make the changes. Genius stuff
Do more of these videos please! I love your videos and videos like this are like the icing in a cupcake!😊 Beautiful and genius!
You are adorable and your advice is just awesome! I follow you religiously! Keep it going! ❤👏👏💃
The way he threw the clutter in😂😂😂
I firmly believe in the mantra of Feng Shui as it always makes sense. I also enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Someone divided people into learning styles in 4
Groups and one was “model builder”. It’s one of the less common styles. There’s also “quick starter” (wants to learn by doing/ trial and error) , and researcher (will not start anything until full research has been done, then will do a thing to completion at a speed very unlike the quick starter, and I forget the 4th one.
Genius, Cliff Tan! Most satisfying re-do I’ve ever seen. Keep up the good work.
Enjoyed the bonus lesson at Ikea and that you show before, after and share your process and teaching!
I am certified in interior decorating and have had an interest in feng shui which I have casually studied for decades.
I think your fun videos are a very nice change from researching feng shui in books, plus are you married?
Teehee
Unreal transformation!
Great improvement, a good outcome with minimal expense. What I can’t understand is why the blinds are pulled down in daytime. What horrendous sight are we being shielded from?
Privacy of the client!
