New pinned comment: This video is pretty mid tbh. I worded some things badly, the audio balancing was a mess, it comes off as melodramatic at points, and I should have been clear on the "I'm not financially supporting this series" rhetoric (I was purely talking about my decision as an individual, I don't really care that much about whether or not other people financially support it). I might make a follow up some time in the future but I don't have the energy at the moment. However, if your reason for disliking this video was because I said the games having pedophilic content is bad, please do that thing that a character does in the fourth case of the first game.
No like honestly I think this is a great video! I still enjoy the series probably bias due to a nostalgia factor but I do agree all the points in the problematic aspects chapter of the video
Yeah no as a Danganronpa fan most if not 98% of us agree that the pedophilic shit is terrible and unnecessary (I say 98% cause every fandom has some depraved individuals that we aren’t affiliated with)
Seriously dude you worry to much... you should relax a little more. ❤ people are horrible and always will be specially online, because everyone has a freaking username and that is easily abused... nobody knows who's typing that freaking comment and still if you "know" the person that wrote that comment ask them in person about the comment! And why ask Because it shows guts and you know why I looked up this video is because one of my best friends daughter wanted to watch Danganronpa but can't because of content that was too disturbing and I heard from her dad because they show stuff that includes cutting off genitals (no matter the sex) and putting broomsticks (the slim end) up someone his/her ass. And too be honest I think your microphone is shit. 😅 but that is probably a you problem. You're great though. 😁
Glad to see I am not the only one disliking it It's like I clicked to know why Dangan got hated not to hear a bunch of history and then for the video to get preachy without saying what they did wrong before it got preachy, and then for the reasons for it being bad like "bad writing" being things I rather be the only judge of (I rather play it first and see for myself that it's bad before hearing someone else say it's bad). I don't think it even said why the writing and whatever else was bad, I don't know, I clicked off
Another thing is that the fandom does seem to hate Teruteru, but not Miu, who has arguably, actually done things to other characters.. ( you could say that she technically was doing “maintenance” on K1-B0, but especially if the genders were reversed it would be seen as more creepy.)
I understand completely. If you've haven't noticed yet, there's character types that get carried from game to game, such as the AI (Alter ego, Chiaki, and K1B0), the sidekick (Kyoko, Chiaki, Kaito), etc. Originally, Miu was meant to fit into the "easy to hate" character role, along with Hifumi and Teruteru. Unfortunately, though most of Japan may have seen her that way, the western fan base decided to praise her for her actions. It's kinda ironic how the fan base can criticize the game both ways; criticizing both the problematic western elements, and the problematic East Asian ones.
It easy to understand why people forgive/love Miu over Hifumi. Hifumi is not sexy or pretty, he is just annoying and ugly. While Miu have huge boobs, looks beautiful for man and is the fantasy fan service for man born. Man love girls to hit on them, it seem. I don't think it's that weird.
Danganronpa is one of my favourite pieces of media ever but it has problems but i wanted to talk about: Mondo killed chihiro over the fact he killed his own brother and didn't want it to get out. Him being trans isn't the reason at all. Also generally the pervert characters like teruteru are usually disliked by the vast majority of the cast due to him being a pervert so it is viewed negatively as it should. I generally like the darker skinned characters. They have been way crazier characters then angie for example like nagito or juunko or gundham so i don't think her being dark skinned was the reason as too why they made her character is like that. They just like making entertaining characters. Mikans fanservice and treatment and execution was quite deplorable. Her execution is easily the worst while every other one is fantastic. I like mikans trial but her treatment, especially the bullying she went through in her life rubs me the wrong way. I think stylistically it's phenomenal. Characters are entertaining and some are written very well. You don't elaborate on what makes the story 'bad' when the story, especially with the class trails, is quite clever. There's a lot to love and stuff to dislike but you're just simply wrong about certain things, like with mondo. Next time you should do more research. The fanbase is fucking cringe i agree but there's always extremes in every fandom.
My thoughts: I honestly don't see how DR1 is transphobic towards a character that isn't even trans. I think there's a difference between crossdressing and being trans. And Mondo killing Chihiro had nothing to do with transphobic. I'll give you credit towards the racial stereotypes. I had no idea the farmer guy was based off of a minstrel show. Wtf. Overall, Imma keep being a danganronpa fan lol.
To be honest it kind of bugs me how a lot of the fandom believe and HCs him as trans (and forces other people to do so too sometimes) because not only does it feed into negative trans stereotypes, but it disregards his backstory altogether. EDIT: if anything, I believe Mondo would be the biggest trans ally if Chihiro was actually trans. He went further lengths to conceal Chihiro's secret and respected his identity without a question, even at the risk of being caught.
yeah, Chihiro isn't trans... he just crossdresses due to insecurity... I have no idea why people think he's trans since it's explicity stated why he crossdresses in-game
The problem with danganronpa is it went mainstream. Plain and simple. As a JPN-only PSP game you could excuse a lot of sloppiness in the writing as translation errors. I remember really enjoying the first game that way despite its story flaws because it was so niche. SDR2 never got a fan patch because it was released on Vita just as the first one was localised due to the Let's Play interest and potential revenue for it. Once danganronpa started doing 1.2 reloads and danganronpa S collection bundles and full seasons of anime to fill out the lore, it was going to be held against a higher standard. As for the fans, the fans suck in every fan base but the only ones worth listening to are the ones who aren't vocal, which makes it hard to have a meaningful conversation about the franchise as a whole.
Personally i disagree with your take on Chihiro’s arc being problematic or transphobic however i do agree that you have a point with the other problematic aspects of danganronpa (specifically the way they handle dark skin tonned characters and the unnecessary fanservice) but good video regardless
Whaat I love soda. Also I really appreciate the subtitles, my guy. English isn't my first language so I sometimes have trouble understanding what is being said. Spoilers for danganronpa ultra despair girls: I always found it very weird and uncomfortable that after revealing Kotoko was a victim of child molestation, the game kept doing panty shots for her. I tried to think of a reason for it, like maybe the devs are trying to make us feel even worse but I honestly don't think there are any excuses for this disgusting act.
To add on that note, literally just after Kotoko explains her disturbing backstory, there is literally a mini-game featuring Kotoko and Komaru where the player has to prevent Komaru from being groped by Kotoko's weird ass machine. Yeah, yikes... To make matters worse, when you finish the game, you gain access to the “Extras” store from the Title Screen. And the same store has the anti-groping mini-game set as its highest-cost item to unlock... By making this strange and uncomfortable experience seem like a reward, they kinda look like the same perverts they’re supposed to be making fun of.
@@TORI_223 but if you think about it deeply it's completely genius! Kotoko's backstory is very dark and might make us feel like we judged her as a villain too harshly... but by putting that mini-game so soon afterwards it shows that she's still a bad person who commits awful acts and we can't feel too bad for her since this is what she's capable of...
@@TORI_223 Dangaronpa is a mess up to begin with, it would be unfair if they will only just do is mass murder. Dangaronpa is showing dark and inhumane society of human but at the same time, showing that there's still a good people despite how bad it is.
@@daikiorihara5426 Me and Ms Nevermind have become friends after everything and i now work on some of the Kingdoms military Technology as a way to repay miss Nevermind For how i acted in the past
Danganronpa is sometimes a mess.. but coming from Japan is not really surprising. It’s been many years since I was introduced to it, I’m just glad I was able to make friends and a ton of memories thanks to the game, that is, now an entire lore that lives rent free in my head
I'm so happy someone finally talked about the dark skinned characters in this franchise it is honestly pretty disgusting how 80 percent of them are sterotypes of people of color.
exactly! something even worse is Sakura as she’s a super respectable buff woman character, but concept art reveals that she was basically paper white before her working out.
It's mostly cuz Japan legit have no idea how black ppl are and dont have any amount of experience with them. I will say that they all had their missteps and I never look forward to any introduced due to the bad track record
the backlash around dr happened cuz it became trendy make criticisms along the lines of “wow, over-the-top murder game that intentionally embraces shock as part of its appeal doesn’t treat [taboo subject] with velvet gloves? imagine my surprise!” danganronpa isn’t a bad series if u hold it to the standard of what it was trying to be: a fun, if edgy, death-game vn. not a nuanced, gritty look into the human condition, or sex inequality, or sa trauma, or whatever
it doesn't even really take itself seriously! it made it's 3rd game a giant self-aware middle finger to the fans, it KNOWS how stupid and over-the-top it is! it's MEANT to overuse the shock factor! that's the point! (but Mikan's portrayal in DR3 is awful)
@@XeorboomI remember in korekiyos case monokuma said something along the lines of “being killed in the bathroom? That rings a bell a school bell!” And “stabbed from below the floor boards? That reeeally rings a bell”
Huh? How can you say Danganronpa is badly written and has well written characters? The writing for characters is dictated by the story they are in. And you misunderstood the theme of Hope and Despair. It's not a simple good vs evil concept, it's a state of mind in a person. Doing nothing, wallowing in sadness and watching the world burn before you is despair. Doing something, confronting your fears and fighting for a better life is Hope. Also just how "mostly uninteresting" is Trigger Happy Havoc's plot? To me it's a very well written, exciting thrill ride of a story.
You can have a terrible plot with good characters. The plot of something doesn't matter as much as the characters do. People are more likely to overlook a weak, formulaic, or even a confusing plot if they believe the characters to be real and sincere. However, no amount of an intriguing narrative will help the story if the characters are flat, uninteresting and unrealistic.
Using personal beliefs on an analysis or.. something something crimes cases type of stuff is like.. really stupid. Like saying "the games just seem really uninteresting " or stuff like that is not at all good for these types of videos, since it's just a opinion, not true. Though it may be have some weird ahh plot twist and stuff, it does have some good writing. Im pretty sure you didn't do this on purpose, but saying that "hope vs despair = good vs bad" is like saying pizza is the same as bread. Edit: I honestly hate the toxic psrt of the fandom though Edit.. again: ok that part about "killing chihiro is transphobic" (im not quoting you) is.. huh. The trans thing isnt even included in the killing itself it was bc Mondo was jealous of Chihiro of standing up for himself. Plus chihiro isnt trans (or atleast doesnt want to be) Editing AGAINNN: ok...dont bring my boy teruteru into tis- first of all, (yes i HATE the fanservice stuff) mikan is the main "fanservice" character with nikan. Teruteru does ntp have ny pwrt in the fanservice thingy, though he is perverte, he's not the one being perverted at You know the drill: most of the love hotel scenes are actually, nostly wholesome. I mean, there is still some subtle sexuality but Take a look at ryomas or rantaros. You of course used the worst ones. They're the one's with intent of sexual actiojs since: Korekiyo was groomed into a somewhat sexual relationship with his sister Miu is.. miu Last one?: I've never seen or watched UDG but like... that's like ONE line in the entire game showing pedophilia (by what i see, i may be wrong) But everything else, i agree, good job!
For the most part it seems that people forget that this series is for people 18+. I do agree that there are aspects of the games that are problematic, but it is not meant for young people to see and you are able to skip certain moments in the game that might make you uncomfortable. There are problematic things in the series yes, but I think the main issues lie in the fandom and the parents that allow their children to get into this at like the age of 12 when clearly this game series is meant for adults.
That’s not the problem. The problem is that these characters are canonically in highschool, just because the game is for adults doesn’t make putting characters who are underage in sexual situations ok
@@buriedinbooks881So it's okay for them to be killing each other, but sexualization of high schoolers is where you draw the line? What is wrong with you people?
If Danganronpa was made for adults, then why do they try so hard to make it look like it's for kids? Berserk is a manga that includes lots of problematic content such as r4pe, torture scenes, brutal hyperealistic deaths, and a full on csa scene, but they make it clear that this manga is for 18+ only with the crude dark ages setting, a realistic artstyle, and warning labels all over the cover. Danganronpa includes similar material, yet it's aesthetic of a shonen anime featuring young characters in a highschool is very misleading to players. Why do you think there are so many kids in the fandom obsessed with things like trauma, abuse, depression, manipulation, etc? Because they were exposed to these things at a young age all because of things like Danganronpa without knowing what they truly are, and they think it all sounds "badass" because they never experienced these things for themselves. If danganronpa had a realistic artstyle similar to that of Berserk, no children would even consider playing it.
i love danganronpa but i realize all the hate. but its defenetly not as bad as people say and it falls in the same boat as valorant where people who havn't even played it shit on it cause other people do. man, i HATE people who do that. also when did hajime spy on hiyoko. that never happened. also being a cultist isnt racist
Hajime spying on Mahiru and Hiyoko is a secret event. You need the item "NO.106 Man's nut" by the start of chapter 2 (so in the first playthrough if you didn' already started to gather items in the first chapter, maybe you don't have it, but you can purchase it for 50 monocoins at the vending machine, or just get it by luck at the Monomono Yachine). To see the event, speak to Mahiru at the start of chapter 2.
I agree that danganronpa has problematic elements that are just not okay(ESPECIALLY in udg) but i still love it. But tbh, I think im getting less interested in the main games. AGAIN, im not defending it! I just like it, while knowing it's flawed. BUT, i loved the characters and cases!
I don't think problematic media exist problematic media is simply normal media that either overtly inadvertently support's something that someone finds morally reprehensible the problem is depending on your moral framework or your culture the same piece of media can simultaneously be judged as problematic and not problematic at the same time because different cultures have different ways of judging media and unless you are willing to say one culture is objectively wrong there's nothing you can do to defend your claim that said piece of media is problematic. For example big gnomes claim that Danganronpa is problematic can be ignored or put into question by either having a different culture that thinks different things are problematic or asking why this media is problematic and simply not agreeing with that person's definition of problematic. So if problematic content does not exist I also think that means people shouldn't be morally judged for liking problematic content since it doesn't exist.
As someone who both played a small portion of UDG and watched several LPs of it, I can say for certain that it is incredibly problematic (potentially most problematic of the whole series). Problems for UDG include a lot of mishandling of children by those who should be protecting them (mostly through flashback cutscenes) and the infamous line that you showed in the video. While context is not needed to know why that line is bad, it does come at a really bad time in the game. The chapter before this, we were primarily dealing with one of the kids in particular who would be a csa victim (all of the main bad characters are elementary aged children in this game) who was given the Mikan treatment throughout her chapter. I really feel bad for the voice actor on that line.
yeah... UDG felt like they tried to do a dark story but didn't completely understand how to do it well (and DR3 really didn't do Mikan justice, give us an ACTUAL Mikan arc and keep the fanservice to a 1 needed scene maximum)
As a "killing game" game with visual novel elements, the game has tons of problems, one of the things that most pissed me of is the fact that it holds your hand, and has long as you havent checked everything in a room, the game wont let you progress, so in theory, there is not a single information thats missing, but every now an then clues are revealed in mid trials, kinda like how sherlock holmes does sometimes, meaning even if you find all the clues, you are still not drawing the full picture of the trials.
One thing i will say is that proper Danganronpa fans understand these issues for the most part. Which is why in fangames like Eden's Garden you see a preservation of the core appeal and experience will all the problematic aspects removed
Fanbases are why I am afraid of considering myself a fan of anything. Firstly, I have found people of fanbases to have the mindset that something is perfect and above sincere criticism to the point it is embarrassing to associate with them. For example, the Dark Souls fanbase may tend to come off as being elitist about the games. The Pokémon competitive players, which is a subset of general Pokémon fans, essentially treat the game as what it is literally: algorithms et cetera. They also seem very vocal that Pokémon should maintain 4 moves for every Pokémon and any experimentation with gameplay even something as simple as allowing Pokémon to learn 5 moves instead of 4 moves somehow breaks the game, when it would only affect the competitive crowd. The Final Fantasy fandom has sub-fanbase that to this day insist that the series should stay a turn-based JRPG even though the series has a history of being experimental. If you want a clear example of this, play XIII, then XV, and then XVI.
I hate the fandom and some characters but the gam overall is amazing in my opinion I had a fun time playing v2 I’m gonna get v3 soon but there is some weird stuff and annoying characters which I hate those characters
When I first saw the Ultimate Farmer, I was willing to write it off as a very unfortunate case of tone deafness. This is my first time hearing about the actual origin of the design and the stageplay...wtf Kodaka??? On the topic of Chihiro, despite being the issue that everyone brings up, I personally think this is the one that's ACTUALLY just a case of tone deafness, as well as a product of the time period it came out in. I admit that I was like 9yo when it came to the US, so I was probably sheltered from the topic, but I don't remember Trans rights being talked about that much back then (not saying they weren't-I mean, examples of Trans people can be found throughout history-but you'd probably be forgiven for not knowing about it in 2010/2012) If it was barely talked about in the US, I'd think it probably wasn't on the mind of Japanese game developers either. Tldr: Yes, by today's standards it's pretty disgusting, but I'd say it's most likely an unfortunate product of its time, and Danganronpa unfortunately isn't even the only popular Japanese series where situations like this have happened. Feel free to call me an idiot and explain every reason why I'm wrong, I am willing to accept if I am. Don't think that I'm just trying to defend a game I like, because even in this very comment I've admitted that DR has some VERY problematic elements (including one I found out recently that is even a problem with Japanese culture as a whole), but despite them, I REALLY enjoyed V3 and consider it one of my favorite games. I know Kodaka has said he'd like to hand the series to someone else, so I'm interested to see if those problematic elements would still persist under a new director...
@@zeroxenoverse9251 oh boy I’ve heard this before. Just cause a series has a few problematic elements doesn’t make it problematic. Yes Danganronpa has some things that are pretty problematic but that’s a small like 5-10% of the series which in the grand scheme of things isn’t that much
10:52 shoutouts to Big Gnome for finally giving me a reason to get rid of a Danganronpa poster and replace it with a true work of art (a framed photo of Barnyard for GameCube's box art)
Cool video but I had to turn up my volume a lot because the music drowned out your voice a lot. I would recommend turning up your voice or turning down the music in the future
I’m honestly surprised they didn’t try to make the series set in college, cause bro, at least they can get away with more of the stuff here… still not much though… like bro, wtf were they thinking with some of this stuff.
Before getting to DR's problematic content, I'd like to disagree with the notion that all or most of DR 1 and 2 are badly written. The plots are simplistic and on the surface nothing particularly special and the dialogue is often rather poorly written, but DR 1 at least does craft a decently compelling narrative about not giving into a corrupt system and the need of cooperation over trying to play a rigged game. Togami believes the nature of the game does not allow for cooperation and believes he can win it, while Kyoko is secretive and even callous in her attempts to beat Junko, and ultimately, both fail, because cold hard logic and exploitative action is something Junko had mastered a long time ago. It is Sakura and Makoto who get them to change their minds about the way they're doing things, and ultimately, all survivors choose the more illogical, but hopeful and cooperative, option when having to side with either Makoto or Junko. One is caving into what got them into their mess to begin with out of a fear of losing what they still have, while the other is trusting in their ability to turn things for the better if they act in unity and reject despair. Sure, it can be boiled down to hope vs despair if you really want to, and I certainly don't think it's particularly complex or deep, but it IS more nuanced than your presentation of it in the video. I'd like to say something similar about DR2, but truth is, I don't remember much about it. I will note that Nagito is a deliciously written antagonist, and performs his role in the plot admirably well, while also in a meta sense perverting Makoto's character and turning it into something inrecognizable. He's responsible for the possibly most well-crafted trial in the series and I think there is some merit in that, even if the overall plot might be lacking. Now to the presumed problematic aspects of the series: I don't see Chihiro as legitimately problematic and rather think it is fans' expectations that led to the drama around them, but I also think it is a very tiring debate to have and have yet to watch the video you mentioned, so I won't go into details here and just defer to you for the matter until I have done so and/or feel like actually delving into it. The treatment of dark-skinned characters is certainly notable, however, and is problematic, so I would agree on that note. On a more controversial note, I am somewhat more mixed on the complaints about fan service. I can readily agree to seeing jokes about sexual assault as problematic (not sexual assault itself - it is, of course problematic, but a game is not problematic for including it in a manner deserving of the subject), and involuntary sexualization by the game of characters who were abused is even worse. I do personally enjoy certain philanderer characters (Inigo and especially Virion of Fire Emblem, for example), less so ones that are offensively creepy perverts without the narrative dealing with them in an appropriate manner and whose philandery overwhelmingly defines them - though, of course, this is based on my perception and some may call characters I like creepy perverts as well depending on the difference in our standards. However, I could really not care less about the status of characters being high schoolers or whatever. I can see why people have issues with characters being marketed as high schoolers and then sexualized, but age and portrayal in fiction is fundamentally such an arbitrary concept (DR could be set in college without changing much tbh) that I could not personally be arsed to consider it anything more than a foot note among other things. One might well still question *why* the developers chose to make people they wanted to sexualize canonically minors (I do think most DR characters are above 18 canonically though? Might be wrong) or put them into costumes associated with ones, but I think if anything, this might reflect poorly on the developers rather than fans arguing against the criticism (in contrast, while I'd say that most TeruTeru enjoyers are unlikely problematic, people who sincerely do not see his behaviour as questionable even after having it pointed out to them might well be). Surely there's plenty of bad apples there too, but I do not see the matter as inherently problematic outside of, again, motivations for making these choices to begin with. I could elaborate, but I'll leave it here unless someone is interested in discussing this further - though I kind of expect I'll be demonized for this. On a similar note, I think the same of the love hotel scenes, where I'm more annoyed by the occasional rapey joke than anything else. As for the bullet points at the end, I forgot, who had DID again? I'm also not convinced I'd call Korekiyo necessarily problematic. He IS problematic, but I'm not sure his portrayal is as a whole, though this might be my forgetting something/being unaware of it. I remember him for his talks about anthropology and his incestuous obsession with his sister which led to him killing people. I'm guessing you mean that such a heavy subject was brought up without the story actually engaging with it in an interesting manner? I.e. not the game doing something bad while not calling it out as bad, but instead using such a motivation solely to justify a crazy murder when it really deserves more nuance? I'd probably agree then, even if I remember liking Kiyo outside of that. If I'm getting anything wrong though I'd appreciate being corrected. One final matter I'd like to approach though is mass media's general obsession with evaluating art in light of any problematic aspects. It's not that I disagree with these existing, but I hardly think they justify calling a great work of art bad (note: not calling Danganronpa 'great'. This is about more than Danganronpa). I remember some outrage about Berserk from not too long ago about how its fans are all misogynistic and how toxic and problematic it really is - because it deals with some dark subject matter, including violence against women. Forget the fact that almost everything those people mentioned is handled maturely and with due respect by the story, even if certain aspects were not, they'd hardly detract from the work's overall quality, its themes, complex characters and gripping narrative. Certainly, if these problematic aspects were so important to a work's quality, we might well have to throw out half of pre-modern literature! Even so, these aspects ARE important in our political climate, I would not deny that, but I think there is far more to art than how much you agree with its core themes and ideas and certainly far more to it than you finding individual, in the scope of the work minor, aspects of it disagreeable. Literary analysis seems too complex of a topic to me to reduce it to problematic works = bad, non-problematic = good. I'm not sure i'd say they don't matter at all, but no way near as much as some people would have you believe. Of course, telling people to "just divorce the author from the story" is something that comes from a place of privilege, especially if the author's unsavoury view points bleed into the work itself. Which is why I'm not against advocating against financially supporting problematic works/creators, but I do think it is reasonable to not extend this contempt to the work's quality unless legitimately warranted. Edit: I should add that I do personally consider some of these aspects to be detrimental do DR's quality as art. Inconsistency in showing abuse victims while sexualizing them and introducing complex, dark topics without proper payoff/handling goes beyond the author injecting problematic view points in their work. Issues like offensive jokes and racism, while notable and very valid reasons to dislike DR for, do not directly affect anything in the work beyond themselves and I consider them less important in evaluating it as such.
I don't agree with you on every point but I definitely do regret writing off a lot of DR1's plot for the sake of the video (hence the giant block of text I added in while editing) as well as not specifying the difference between a work like Berserk that uses its darker/problematic aspects to actually enhance the story as opposed to something like Danganronpa which uses a lot of them for cheap shock value at best and genuine attempts at fanservice at worse
In terms of the problematic elements for me the most egregious aspect was a certain game called Danganronpa another episode ultra despair girls....im assuming you already are well aware of the subject matter but in short the game handles various forms of child abuse in the worst way possible, it's just awful.
i just ended up watching the video myself i can't stop myself from loving every other aspect of danganronpa, i think the good weighs out the bad by a mile, and i can't see the games as trashy, i just wish they wouldn't spark so much controversy and that they wouldn't have the genuinely horrible aspects, i'll always be a fan of danganronpa but financially supporting it If it does keep up with things as bad as the love suite from v3 is something i don't want to do
id say danganronpa 2 is the best game in the series, the themes of defying who you were and forging your own path are pretty well done and some of the character writing is just fucking goated
Honestly, these two things (the fandom and the games content) were the biggest factors for why I stopped interacting with the game in general. Ive had so many bad experiences in the fandom that i had to leave for my own mental sanity in a way. Not to mention the problematic stuff i noticed when i got older. It makes me sad because there are some good characters in danganronpa and i hate how they have to be from danganronpa, (if that makes sense) nowadays im just taking the characters i like and developing them into my own ocs.
i agree 100% with all you said, and i’m glad it’s actually being talked about on youtube (and not by people making fun of the complaints and calling it “stupid twt users trying to cancel a good game”). i was a huge fan of danganronpa for years but as soon as i decided to look at them critically i fell into a rabbit hole of realizing how problematic the series is. the only things i like about danganronpa are sakura ogami and the fact that it got me into Better games like zero escape, yttd, gnosia, and the danganronpa another fangame series, which almost everyone who’s played is agrees is better than the canon games😭
Considering I almost became a Danganronpa fan around 2018 but didn't makes me feel like I dodged the world's largest bullet sometimes. It was a mix of obnoxious DR fans in my friend groups as well as the only character I was attached to being Chihiro, who as you describe in this video gets treated absolutely horribly. They are probably still the only thing I care about in this franchise just because of how they helped shaped my identity but it's probably the thing that pisses me off about the franchise the most even if I think there are worse aspects within the series lol.
he doesn't get treated horribly. it's just a complete misunderstanding of what happened with him. You should actually form your own opinions on media lmao.
1:07 if i had a dollar everytime i heard about a komaeda fan harming something/someone, id have 2 dollars (for now). Which isnt much but is absolutely disgusting that it happened twice
Okay i just started the video and i dont know if this will change my mind but saying "theres so many things that get related to danganronpa and thats why i dont support it anymore" Is the same Argument as " I won't buy hogwarts legacy because J.K. was transpjobic. " Like boohoo there are bad people out there that say they do things because of something thats not true. There are weird danganronpa fans i agree but oml saying that the fans ARE what makes the game (apparently) is just dumb and very childish. If that is really the only Argument there is then i guess Christianity should be hated on the same level as danganronpa since they've done way worse things in the name of god. Nah but fr if you said "I dont want to be associated with the fandom anymore but i still like the games " I would agree but blaming the game for things that happen OUTSIDE OF THE GAME and from what I've seen so far it doesn't even have anything to do with the creators, nah.
Okay were starting off by saying the plot is trashy. I get it don't worry it's something many criticize about the game. But you know what all of those people have in common? Not even attempting to actually learn about the lore. FNAF is the best example of that. Its lore is very complicated but that's what many people like about the games. To figure it out. This is the same for danganronpa. The lore is not there for lazy people who were just expecting @ss, t/ts and some easy riddles, it's for the hardcore fans who actually care about the games and are willing to actually think about it. The danganronpa plot is more complex and interesting than most of the popular media rn. Maybe this says something about society and stuff but I won't turn full on joker mode now. Just saying that if your first (which is most of the time the biggest) argument is how bad the plot is it just shows you didn't do enough research on the game. Even if you don't like the game those who actually learned about the plot still agree that it's good or okay for the time it came out. How do I know this? Because I have friends who think exactly that. Geez this video already feels like some angry Twitter user just being salty cuz they are too dumb to understand something
03:11 you literally just proved my point. If you know ANYTHING about the lore of danganronpa you know that V3 has the LEAST lore. If you call v3 the best when it comes to plot and lore than it really just proves you only look at the surface level of things and then start criticizing
03:39 wait are you one of those people who are too lazy to watch the first two movies of a trilogy and just expect to understand everything in the third movie? This video makes a lot more sense now
About the well written characters: I find it funny how many people flame others for liking, idk, sayaka who has more personality and backstory than main cast members in other games or anime EVEN THO SHE WAS THE FIRST TO DIE (I'm looking at you uraraka ochako you and your 3 personality traits: liking deku, being poor, she's nice and wants to be a hero to help her parents, oh wait that's not a personality trait that's already her entire backstory.) I'm glad you at least appreciate the character writing
Okay about the annoying characters: yes I agree they suck. But you know what? I think we don't have the same characters we don't like. Whaaaat? People have different tastes in characters??? as an example : I like hifumi. (Not because of the pervert part) I would guess you like Miu (because of her great personality) I don't. I don't like Kaito or maki either because they are annoying af. Maybe we agree on that , maybe we don't. See the problem now?
I was agreeing with how the problematic aspects were handled in the video until somehow fanservice is more egregious than actual racism lol. At least the fanservice can be skipped, meanwhile you have to deal with the racist depictions of the characters (especially with Angie ingame) Another note: when you're introduced to Sakura, the game calls her the missing link to apes...and she's a dark skinned woman...should I even have to explain the problem with that.
The Toasted Potato To put it simply : - Awfully one-dimensional characters - Countless unfunny jokes almost all about either toilet, sex or the word "bear" - Countless extremely cringeworthy scenes - Levels of idiocy over the roof - Most of its writing is just (bad) fanservice - Fans love it most because it gives them cute waifus or gruesome deaths - Writing as abysmal as Rent a Girlfriend - It is a story created to waste people time
@@gideonragnason6706 Every series has 1 dimensional characters and danganronpa has great characters like nagito or sakura who have a lot to them. nagito for example is character whos a complete enigma but is ultimately fighting for whats just, YOu have a character like hajime whos one of the most human charcaters ive seen. a guy who suffered from a lack of confidence and was desperate to find solace and hide form that fact that he wasnt special in the hopes peak with everyone learning to accept him despite that. there are other characters i could talk about. clearly theres a lot more to them than just being funny hyperoblic caricatures. Toilet jokes. i don't recall any at all pertaining to toilets. It has a few sex jokes i guess but im mature enough to not let them get to me as it isnt too incessant. bear jokes arent that common. definitely not enough to be annoying or even that much of a criticism unless youre easily irritabe. cringeworthy scenes. could you be reffering to fanservice scenes? those are only really present in goodbye despair with mikan which is something i think was also handled quite abhorrently but gd has more than enought to make up for that blot. fanservice isnt that common in danganronpa honestely. in the first game there were maybe like 2 scenes and mikan has moments in the second game. its no where near as bad as like an ecchi anime. a lot of the fan favourite characters arent just waifus. monokuma, nagito, kokichi, mondo, fuyuhiko, shuichi, kibo and hajime are all if not more popular than the vast majority of female characters. executions are made to be entertaining and over the top. thats the whole charm about them so yes thats the point. the executions are made to be entertaining. "writing as abysmal as rent a girl friend". rent a girlfriend is cheeks how the hell do you get to that conclusion. its almost like you havent played the games and are just regurgatating the same points used by poeple over the years. So you havent provided much, if any valid criticisms and then jump the gun and say danganronpa has bad writing without elaborating why. "a story created to waste people time". stories are made to waste your time. enjoying media is something you do in your free time when youre not working so i can just apply that same fallacy to every other piece of fiction that has ever been written. in conclusion, you dont elaborate on your points and a lot of you points are very petty and most people wouldnt let bear jokes get to them lmao 💀
@thetoastedpotato1618 I could consider Nagito at least decent if he didn't spend about 90% of the time he is onscreen being embarrassingly cringe or sprouting nonsensical stuff (though admittedly way too many Dr characters do that). Sakura ended up being a decent human being who died because all others weren't, as all it would have taken to prevent her suicide would have been that someone told her how utterly idiotic and counterproductive her gesture was... Hajime was potentially interesting but in the end everything about him turned out extremely barebones and barely hinted in a lazy, unsatisfactory epologue... Them being hyperbolic caricatures was a problem because such events were both everywhere and all over the place, but only very rarely the fit the context of the moment they were in. It felt like Kodaka agglomerated all possible exaggerated situations and stereotypes and kept putting them in every possible scene. Toliet scenes and sex scenes were repeated and beyond cringe, especially considering that many characters were basically created only to make them... And even so they were extremely embarrassing and unfunny other than lazy, while bear jokes were redundant especially considering Monokuma seemed unable to make any different kind of jokes... I am not easily irritable but it is clear how those "jokes" are more disgusting than funny or entertaining for whoever is mentally older than 13 years old, especially considering that almost every single time they didn't fit the context and were just thrown there completely at random... The fanservice was cringe but not all about Mikan, who is an embarrassing all-fanservice-character herself, but also other ones like Soda and Hajime spying on Mahiru and Hiyoko bathing, that scene is something you could only find either in a hentai or in rent a girlfriend (No wonder many Dr fans are also Rent a Girlfriend fans, at least from what I saw)... Executions are made to "please" simply because Kodaka, being the lazy scumbag he is, has no other way to keep his viewers entertained (aside from fanservice and waifus), but other "gruesome" deaths happened in other games (like Digimon Survive) without being that fanservice-like or having a much more "symbolic reason" and, most importantly, Survive had a good ending where none of those happened yet story remained interesting, Kodaka just couldn't manage to entertain other viewers without deaths or over exaggerated situations. About those characters you mentioned I can only say they were potentially interesting but extremely poorly executed due to Dr being a soulless cash grab (I would have appreciated them more if there had been more "routes" to flesh them out more and better). Most stories aren't made to waste people's time as they require effort and attention to be followed, while other ones like Dr and Rent a Girlfriend just give fans what they want without ever forcing them to use their brain (I had figured out every single process and Mastermind almost immediately but not because I am good at these things, just because it was extremely spoonfed) I don't know about other people who criticized Dr, that was my first opinion when I both played the games and watched that awful Anime, and I even saw a Dr version that did good everything original one did bad, so I could even make a comparison and an example of a "well written Dr" and a "badly written Dr".
@@gideonragnason6706 Lol yeah the anime sucks. I mean i just disagree and i like all those characters for the reasons i highlighted your reasons are understandable. thank you for elaborating more. Nagito's whole philosophy is just a more extreme version of Makoto's or hopes peaks in general but in reality they're quite similar just Nagito is willing to do anything, even at the expense of his own life. with Sakura, nobody understood how she was feeling and the suicide note she sent was intercepted by Monkuma's and replaced with something he wrote so her whole self sacrificing virtuous self was unknown to everyone. also her sacrifice is what completely stopped the killings because everyone learned to except each other and not suspect each other. also these overexaggerated caricatures of characters are entertaining to watch which is what they were going for no? its very rare for a story to make me this entertained by basically almost everyone. also when it comes to serious moments in the story, none of them act outlandish in anyway and behave naturally whether it be to a death if a friend or a big twist. executions are entertaining to watch (except Mikan's). I don't know if we're just unable to see eye to eye on that but if you don't like them than that's cool. i just think they do their job perfectly. Also they're the result of the build up of an entire chapter and investigation and class trial. Mikan's fanservice was bad and made me feel sad watching it especially after everything being revealed about her it. I don't remember their being a scene of hajime and soda spying on Mahiru and Hiyoko. was that like an optional scene in the free time events? Because that maybe the reason why I don't recall seeing it. Digimon i have no knowledge of. i watched data squad and fusion as a kid and that's how far my knowledge extends. also these deaths last for a few minutes at most. Most of the game is the story, free time or the class trials. executions and deaths make up such a small fraction of that time which is why they're entertaining because it feel like a treat to finally see what this chapter was building up to. Danganronpa had me paying attention a lot tbh expecially during class trails cause it was sometimes it was a pain to know when you had to shoot cause sometimes it wasn't too clear which one was the contradiction and the class trails (usually) have me on my toes and I don't realise who it is until near the end unless its some 11037 level shenaningans. I don't find those jokes funny either. Danganronpa can be funny at times but with its repeating gags, its gets old quick. it just doesn't bother me that much in the end. also rent a girlfriend is so cheeks I'm astounded that you would ever compare it to Danganronpa. Also if that's your opinion when you played the game that's fair. I understand your reasoning now i just don't see eye to eye with you.
TW❗️❗️❗️ MENTIONS OF SERIOUS TOPICS SUCH AS SA, CSA, ABUSE As somebody who gained a liking towards danganronpa in early 2020, here are some of my personal issues with it now 1. A huge issue that should also be bought to light is how there is so much incest in this franchise that I wouldn't be surprised if team danganronpa just had a fetish for it. Leon's cousin, the "brother complex" thing in UDG, tsumugi's love hotel, monotaro and monophanie, Korekiyo's whole situation, Mukuro and Junko in the anime, what is with danganronpa and it's weird obsession with incest. It's one thing for it to be a plotline like Korekiyos, but a lot of the incest in this series is there to be there and it's really disturbing. 2. Many have already taken notice, but the fact that all 3 games (excluding UDG) have the exact same formula. From the double kill in the third act to the "buff character always dying by the fourth trial". It's not exactly that huge of an issue, but cmon, you gotta spice it up a little 3. Characters who have pasts that pertain sexual assault, or else still suffer sexual assault being used as fanservice. Danganronpa has this disturbing and really gross trend of taking characters in the franchise who have suffered being SA'd, and using them to be the "sex appeal" character. And you might be saying, "oh well, somebody who's experienced assault can still be cute and sexy". And you're right! They absolutely can. The issue with danganronpa, however, is that the sexual assault is also used to make the characters sexualized. The worst and most atrocious example of this would be Kotoko Utsugi from UDG, who was a victim of CSA (Child Sexual Assault), and IS STILL A CHILD AS OF THE GAMES CURRENT EVENTS. She's literally only 12 in the game, yet the game constantly had shots of her slipping and falling to show her underwear, rolling upside down to show her underwear, when you have to fight her you're forced to strip her of her clothing. And it's even more gross considering the game goes on to show that she still experiences some severe PTSD as a result of what she went through, yet it treats her like that. It's legitimately repulsive. Other examples are a bit scarce, but the whole thing with Akane, her step-dads, and how it's implied that people were trying to sexually take advantage of her while she was underaged is really freaky and weird 4. It's already been mentioned here, but the issue of all the characters who are dark skinned (or more accurately, any character who isn't so sickeningly pale that they're the color of paper) being portrayed as dumb or airheaded. Aoi, Akane, Yasuhiro, that "Ultimate Farmer" guy in the anime. The only exceptions I've seen are Sakura and Angie. 5. This is more of the fandoms issue, but the flanderizarion of some characters and damnation of others. If you've ever been around the danganronpa fandom for more than a few seconds, you're bound to notice the strange influx of hatred towards one character, yet love towards another character who shares the exact traits that made the first character so hatred. Example A. Basically any of the male antagonists (Byakuya, Nagito, Kokichi) and the female antagonists (Celeste, Hiyoko, Mikan, Angie) Nagito Komaeda is often revered as one of the best, most well-written characters of the franchise and is a fan-favorite, and is mostly revered for his absolute degeneracy and sociopathic nature, and his willingness to let his friends and peers and even himself die for something as meer as a concept. Angie Yonaga, however, is often known as being one of the most hated characters and often deemed as being obnoxious and a bad character for... Being almost exactly the same as Nagito. Both Nagito and Angie exhibit being cheerful and insensitive to the situation they're in, especially towards those who have died (hell, in Angie's case, Danganronpa didn't even give a single sprite where she isn't smiling). Both of them were willing to throw those around them to the wolves for something as meer as a concept (With Nagito, it's hope, with Angie, it's Atua). Both of them were incredibly manipulative and secretive, and always seemed to know more than they let on. However, what makes them different is that Nagito, upon showing her true nature, was immediately outcasted and alienated from the others, and for the rest of the game, everybody steered clear of him. Angie, on the other hand, was able to actually manipulate her classmates into believing that she was a helping hand, and who the hell knows how she would've used that to her advantage had she lived longer to do so. Another one that just personally irks me is how defensive the fandom is of a character who has done plenty wrong, to the point that they'll even throw the blame of their actions onto the victims of said actions. Take Kazuichi Souda and Sonia Nevermind. From the moment Souda had ever met Sonia, he was immediately grossly creepy towards her, and spent practically every single minute of his in-game screentime continuing to be an absolute pest towards her, what with stalking her, objectifying her, sexualizing her, and hating her closest friend on the island, Gundham Tanaka, because he viewed Gundham as competition. So you'd think the fandom would tend not to like this guy, right? Nope! In fact, a lot of people are more mad at SONIA for rejecting his advances and being mean to him throughout the game. ... What???? That is- the grossest amount of victim blaming I have ever seen in my life. No shit Sonia isn't going to like Kazuichi and is going to be mean to him, HE LITERALLY SPENDS HIS ENTIRE SCREEN-TIME TREATING HER LIKE SHE'S NOT EVEN A PERSON. And what makes this worse is that if you spend all your time talking with Sonia, she actually reveals that the reason she came to Japan in the first place was because she was tired of being treated like a princess back in her home kingdom and thought going to a different country would mean she'd experience what it'd be like to live a regular life. Another thing to take into account is that it never even seems like Kazuichi likes Sonia because she's Sonia. He likes Sonia because she fulfills a fetish he has. He has a fetish for a "hot blonde princess", making it so he doesn't even really like HER, just her as a concept. This is also added to why he hates Gundham, and also hates when she talks about her interest in the occult. He doesn't like that because Sonia is stepping out of the made-up box that he had set-up for her, and her friendship/heavily implied romance with Gundham also challenges his fantasy. 6. Female characters being killed to further male characters development. There's been few times where it's been the other way around, the only one I can think of right now is Akane and Nekomaru. It wouldn't be much of an issue, if not for the fact that they do it A LOT. 7. Bland main protag. I'm sorry, I'm gonna be a bit salty, I would've preferred Kaede as the v3 protagonist. Not only just because she's a girl, but because you can only take so much of "shy main protagonist who's also a closet perv" before it gets boring. And also because you can't just give us a dynamic between a confident and "takes-no-shit" girl and her boyfriend who's shyer and more flustered who needs help asserting himself and then take it away immediately 8. Toko and Genocide Jill are awful split-personality/DID representation Sorry for the length of this, I like ranting.
sorry if i replied late but that “hate character a for 1 trait, love character b even though they have trait” is so true. In DR2, Ratatouille (forgot his name) earned infamy for attempting to manipulate people into kissing his eggplants. Very bad considering the age of literally every single character in DR2. Yet I haven’t seen anyone talk about how Miu downright did worse to Keebo, also had a super sexualized design and has her kinks mentioned in the first chapter. It’s so weird.
Aoi isn’t really dumb she is really emotionally intelligent during the fourth trial and doesn’t really make dumb decision except checking for alter ego which could have been really dangerous if it was a murder for example and none of the main characters are really perverts, the worse I can think of right now is suichi saying he can see kaede’s underwear whe she climb the ladder in chapter 1 (didn’t watch the video long enough, yeah the pervet shit sucks fortunately it’s entierely optional so i didn’t saw it never in my playthrough and I’m happy with that)
I can’t imagine thinking the third one is the well written one of the series. The motivations? The plot holes? THE ENDING!? The 2nd game takes the cop out trope of “it’s all a simulation” and actually fits it into the story. V3 is trash all around.
Honestly, irdc about the toxic Danganronpa fandom- the extremes of said fandom specifically. I just create fan projects and support fan projects. I have distanced myself from the original games, I really just hopped on to RAIN CODE and dipped after my Body Discovery vids. I’m just completing my series and idk what I’ll do after that…
Sure, the video has a lot of flaws but I still absolutely adore it personally, I find the clips and just everything making me nostalgic for 2020-2021 when I was active in the Danganronpa community and my closest friends would enjoy it as well. sadly those days are long gone but your video is a nice time capsule to those times for me. ^^
I've never played the games but I like all of the Anime. As an Assigned male at birth Gender Fluid person, I'm really not that bothered by the handling of Chihiro. All the killers are pretty Sympathetic and the only thing that makes this look lie Trans Panic is the timing. They winding up having more of an impact beyond their death then most victims. Anime Teenager do not look like real Teenagers, moralizing about this is pure Puritanism plain and simple I don't care how hard you try to make your offense sound leftist.
Danganronpa is a game I got into because of it's presentation and concept. The concept of 'courtroom murder mystery game' was really interesting. After I played the games, I kinda felt like 'this could've been written better'. I wound up making 2 different DR based mod series because I wanted to take a stab at the concept and see if I could pull it off. But as time went on, the parts of DR that were gross became more noticeable. I was younger and much more naive at the time, and lived a very sheltered life, so I didn't really notice just HOW bad the aspects were, even though I could tell they were bad. As I made the mods, I began ridiculing DR's habits and issues over time. By 2020, I definitely felt like I could say with certainty I hated DR and what it stood for. I wish I didn't, but making Kotoko, a grade school r-word victim, the designated character for fanservice, shows just how far DR is willing to go, and I'm not OK with it. Using the DR name to ridicule it's issues might be gauche, but I feel on some level it's warranted. Maybe it'll help the more stubborn fans see the issues that make it so hated, maybe it won't. Worth a shot I'd say.
the ppl who understand, understand, but UDG may genuinely be one of the most problematic pieces of media it gets horrendous in both its writing and presentation, scares me !
I still really like Danganronpa but I’m sick and tired of their being fan service everywhere. It was kinda hard watching Ultra Despair Girls. What the heck was Mikan’s execution. We didn’t need that shot (at least not all of us, I know some people in their basements were drooling seeing her execution). This isn’t a problem just wanted to brag, I met Kyoko’s eng voice actor.
There're definitely aspects of the series that I utterly hate, most pertaining to the post-game content...and a handful of disgusting characters. In all games even. It unsettled me the most when it came to V3's ending, but trip to get there certainly gave me ulcers in my stomach (Korekiyo being maybe the biggest one. Fuck him), and other things in the series dont help either. I still really like alot of characters and story elements to the series but there is an unbalance for morally gray to flatout disturbing (and confusing) things that were introduced, so it's developed a love-hate relationship with me over the years. If it weren't for that, this would be my favorite series. From what i hear about the fandom, i find it's not worth touching them so i never interact with anyone within it
Talk talk and Talk, and Does bring the matter anywhere else, also, I don't see any of this as reason of danganronpa being hated, I just think people are stupid and Idiots, making their opinions based on others and not their own experiences.
I literally only play these games for the murder mysteries and a few characters that I like, like fuyuhiko and gundham. A murder in a funhouse using a moving floor to drop someone to their death is just a really cool way to create a murder mystery. However, what puts me off playing them is the ridiculous amount of just uncomfortable and overly sexual moments like most of the shit mikan, teruteru, hifumi, miu and kazuichi say or do. Really makes it hard to engage with these games and it really says something if id be embarrassed to tell someone i enjoyed these games. The mysteries were fun to solve and picking the right evidence to hear your character yell "no that's wrong!" is pretty fun, but with all the totally unnecessary crap in between and the cringy overarching stories ive never cared to follow, ace attorney is just leagues ahead of it. Not even close

Hey you, looking at the screen. Do you like awesome things that are awesome? Then you gotta play this game dude. It's friggen cool, and crazy addictive, like popping bubble wrap addictive. Check this out [showcases dashes] See that's your dash move. Theres a short dash, long dash, jump dash, spiral, slide-There's probably a dash that makes you breakfast! I don't know! Beck:Great idea-wait what. The point is you're dashing around like a freakin moonman and I love it. Oh, and look at this. There's all these combo moves you can do, and then you can do combos ON combos to rack up your score, and I know you like that combo on combo action. But I saved the best for last. Absorption boosts. You kill an enemy and you can absorb their powerups; stuff that'll make you faster and stronger, and make the bad guys cry like an anime fan on prom night. So what do you think? You ready to play? I'm ready. [offscreen] No one's talking to you verden!
danganronpa has a really good plot/concept but theres so much problematic shit ive never played it before and i want to but all the bad and weird shit just makes me not want to
Stories in videogames isnt the problem, its the delivery. If u want a good visual novel murder mystery game, play the Ace Attorney series. DR just has some lame anime ass story
I think its decent and informative! I wanted to find out why everyone hated danganropa and your video helped a ton 😭
Also, thanks for adding captions
Glad to see I am not the only one disliking it
It's like I clicked to know why Dangan got hated not to hear a bunch of history and then for the video to get preachy without saying what they did wrong before it got preachy, and then for the reasons for it being bad like "bad writing" being things I rather be the only judge of (I rather play it first and see for myself that it's bad before hearing someone else say it's bad).
I agree with you Teruteru is horrible, but Miu is a masterpiece, I don’t really get it.
I always thought people liked miu more than teru because she actually got taken down a peg
Also Teru Teru is trying to trick Sonia into sexually pleasuring him the moment we first meet :/
I still love Danganronpa, even if there is weird stuff in it. I'm too attached to hate it.
Same i am especially attached to Kyoko and she is one of the only 10 characters holding me to this game
Same but I’m attracted to makoto naegi in dp1 and dp3
Sameee
Same
i mean js dont support the devs. and your okay to play it. its a good game but its so problomatic at times. js pirate the game and ur all good to play
Danganronpa is one of my favourite pieces of media ever but it has problems but i wanted to talk about:
Mondo killed chihiro over the fact he killed his own brother and didn't want it to get out.
The only redeeming factor about Teruteru is that he has by far the funniest execution.
And he's a mama's boy
It's not like Teruteru is close to being popular to begin with
My thoughts: I honestly don't see how DR1 is transphobic towards a character that isn't even trans.
@@yourcommentisntfunnyv2709 honestly, I'd forgive his inspiration if he actually did something in the story!
You can have transphobic writing surrounding a cis character just like you can have homophobic writing surrounding a straight character
@@Xeorboomppl know he isn't trans, but that doesn't remove the transphobic narrative surrounding him
The problem with danganronpa is it went mainstream.
Spoilers for danganronpa ultra despair girls:
I always found it very weird and uncomfortable that after revealing Kotoko was a victim of child molestation, the game kept doing panty shots for her. I tried to think of a reason for it, like maybe the devs are trying to make us feel even worse but I honestly don't think there are any excuses for this disgusting act.
I think UDG tried to do a dark and disturbing story but just didn't completely understand how exactly to do it
To add on that note, literally just after Kotoko explains her disturbing backstory, there is literally a mini-game featuring Kotoko and Komaru where the player has to prevent Komaru from being groped by Kotoko's weird ass machine.

We send 🙏 ers to art and music team of the game everyday
The videogame is fine but i just cant with the anime it sucks. Idc its so disgusting
Edit: I honestly hate the toxic psrt of the fandom though
Edit.. again: ok that part about "killing chihiro is transphobic" (im not quoting you) is.. huh. The trans thing isnt even included in the killing itself it was bc Mondo was jealous of Chihiro of standing up for himself. Plus chihiro isnt trans (or atleast doesnt want to be)

You know the drill: most of the love hotel scenes are actually, nostly wholesome. I mean, there is still some subtle sexuality but Take a look at ryomas or rantaros. You of course used the worst ones. They're the one's with intent of sexual actiojs since:
Korekiyo was groomed into a somewhat sexual relationship with his sister
Miu is.. miu
Last one?: I've never seen or watched UDG but like... that's like ONE line in the entire game showing pedophilia (by what i see, i may be wrong)
But everything else, i agree, good job!
@@buriedinbooks881 I’m fully aware of that
@@buriedinbooks881So it's okay for them to be killing each other, but sexualization of high schoolers is where you draw the line?
Im an adult. The game is just mid idk what to say
i love danganronpa but i realize all the hate. but its defenetly not as bad as people say and it falls in the same boat as valorant where people who havn't even played it shit on it cause other people do. man, i HATE people who do that. also when did hajime spy on hiyoko. that never happened. also being a cultist isnt racist
I really feel bad for the voice actor on that line.
yeah... UDG felt like they tried to do a dark story but didn't completely understand how to do it well
(and DR3 really didn't do Mikan justice, give us an ACTUAL Mikan arc and keep the fanservice to a 1 needed scene maximum)
I'm over halfway through DeathNote, that OST is one of the very few anime OSTs I can't get tired of hearing.

Now to the presumed problematic aspects of the series:
I don't see Chihiro as legitimately problematic and rather think it is fans' expectations that led to the drama around them, but I also think it is a very tiring debate to have and have yet to watch the video you mentioned, so I won't go into details here and just defer to you for the matter until I have done so and/or feel like actually delving into it.
@@BigGnomeThen do this thing again. Like REALLY do it again.

Okay i just started the video and i dont know if this will change my mind but saying "theres so many things that get related to danganronpa and thats why i dont support it anymore" Is the same Argument as " I won't buy hogwarts legacy because J.K. was transpjobic. "
Like boohoo there are bad people out there that say they do things because of something thats not true.

- Countless unfunny jokes almost all about either toilet, sex or the word "bear"
- Countless extremely cringeworthy scenes
- Levels of idiocy over the roof
- Most of its writing is just (bad) fanservice
- Fans love it most because it gives them cute waifus or gruesome deaths
- Writing as abysmal as Rent a Girlfriend
- It is a story created to waste people time
@@gideonragnason6706 Every series has 1 dimensional characters and danganronpa has great characters like nagito or sakura who have a lot to them. nagito for example is character whos a complete enigma but is ultimately fighting for whats just, YOu have a character like hajime whos one of the most human charcaters ive seen. a guy who suffered from a lack of confidence and was desperate to find solace and hide form that fact that he wasnt special in the hopes peak with everyone learning to accept him despite that. there are other characters i could talk about. clearly theres a lot more to them than just being funny hyperoblic caricatures.
@thetoastedpotato1618
I could consider Nagito at least decent if he didn't spend about 90% of the time he is onscreen being embarrassingly cringe or sprouting nonsensical stuff (though admittedly way too many Dr characters do that).
Most stories aren't made to waste people's time as they require effort and attention to be followed, while other ones like Dr and Rent a Girlfriend just give fans what they want without ever forcing them to use their brain (I had figured out every single process and Mastermind almost immediately but not because I am good at these things, just because it was extremely spoonfed)
I don't know about other people who criticized Dr, that was my first opinion when I both played the games and watched that awful Anime, and I even saw a Dr version that did good everything original one did bad, so I could even make a comparison and an example of a "well written Dr" and a "badly written Dr".
TW❗️❗️❗️
MENTIONS OF SERIOUS TOPICS SUCH AS SA, CSA, ABUSE
As somebody who gained a liking towards danganronpa in early 2020, here are some of my personal issues with it now
It's not exactly that huge of an issue, but cmon, you gotta spice it up a little
3. Other examples are a bit scarce, but the whole thing with Akane, her step-dads, and how it's implied that people were trying to sexually take advantage of her while she was underaged is really freaky and weird
Example A. Basically any of the male antagonists (Byakuya, Nagito, Kokichi) and the female antagonists (Celeste, Hiyoko, Mikan, Angie)
Nagito Komaeda is often revered as one of the best, most well-written characters of the franchise and is a fan-favorite, and is mostly revered for his absolute degeneracy and sociopathic nature, and his willingness to let his friends and peers and even himself die for something as meer as a concept.
And also because you can't just give us a dynamic between a confident and "takes-no-shit" girl and her boyfriend who's shyer and more flustered who needs help asserting himself and then take it away immediately
8. Toko and Genocide Jill are awful split-personality/DID representation
Sorry for the length of this, I like ranting.
sorry if i replied late but that “hate character a for 1 trait, love character b even though they have trait” is so true.
Aoi isn’t really dumb she is really emotionally intelligent during the fourth trial and doesn’t really make dumb decision except checking for alter ego which could have been really dangerous if it was a murder for example and none of the main characters are really perverts, the worse I can think of right now is suichi saying he can see kaede’s underwear whe she climb the ladder in chapter 1 (didn’t watch the video long enough, yeah the pervet shit sucks fortunately it’s entierely optional so i didn’t saw it never in my playthrough and I’m happy with that)
I haven't seen any problem in all of that, I think you just need to touch some grass and Stop Playing Genshin
I can’t imagine thinking the third one is the well written one of the series. The motivations? The plot holes? THE ENDING!? The 2nd game takes the cop out trope of “it’s all a simulation” and actually fits it into the story. V3 is trash all around.
Thanks for playing Danganronpa so I don't have to
I truly am Doug "The Nostalgia Critic" Walker
And thats why ace attorney better
Fr. The voice acting and animations in this game are so hard to sit thru, it just doesnt give u the satisfaction of AA pursuits
Agreed. Got nothing against it.
Tell me you havent played danganronpa without actually telling me. Wtf is this video
Honestly, irdc about the toxic Danganronpa fandom- the extremes of said fandom specifically. I just create fan projects and support fan projects. I have distanced myself from the original games, I really just hopped on to RAIN CODE and dipped after my Body Discovery vids. I’m just completing my series and idk what I’ll do after that…
I liked the video but now my recommend is filled with Danganronpa so I feel like you should atone again
I hate the hit game Danganronpa
i used to be a fan when i was 11, so i never truely realized how depraved this series was until i became older.
Meh, whatever, you do you. I don't agree with everything in this video, but that's life lol~
I'm only halfway in and this video goes so hard, subbed.
Danganronpa is a good game, with a good story, stop shitting on it cause it's popular to do so
I love DR, but a lot of the stuff he said in this video is true
Late here but, while drs idea was good, execution was off. Shitty writing tbh
also bc its just so icky
I love Danganronpa too girl, but, a lot of he said was true, so you can deny it.
the ppl who understand, understand, but UDG may genuinely be one of the most problematic pieces of media it gets horrendous in both its writing and presentation, scares me !
I played the first one and game is trash. The fandom is worse.
Bro didnt get to the first case and saw sayakas murder probably
I still really like Danganronpa but I’m sick and tired of their being fan service everywhere. It was kinda hard watching Ultra Despair Girls. What the heck was Mikan’s execution. We didn’t need that shot (at least not all of us, I know some people in their basements were drooling seeing her execution). This isn’t a problem just wanted to brag, I met Kyoko’s eng voice actor.
great video this deserves way more views
From what i hear about the fandom, i find it's not worth touching them so i never interact with anyone within it
yeah I'm with you, I love the series but there are also aspects I hate
(and I have no idea what's going on with half of the fans)
Despair girls makes big top look like a masterpiece 💀
At least with big top the creepiness was made to enhance the childish atmosphere of the place. Despair girls is just shock humor
Great video bud!! I never realized how bad and problematic this game was since i consumed its contents when i was young, this was super eye opening
THE FACT I RECOGNIZED EVERYONE IN THE DISCORD LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

There's all these combo moves you can do, and then you can do combos ON combos to rack up your score, and I know you like that combo on combo action. But I saved the best for last. Absorption boosts. Thanks for making this video. Now i can regret spending 15 dollars on Danganronpa 1 and somehow playing the first arc of it.

danganronpa has a really good plot/concept but theres so much problematic shit
ive never played it before and i want to but all the bad and weird shit just makes me not want to

Danganronpa is so bad im happy someone is finally talking about this
why is it so bad? im curious as to why you think that.
I'm just not into cartoons about killing kids. It's...just...WEIRD!
I found Danganronpa to be dull. It's proof that stories in video games shouldn't be a thing.
Stories in videogames isnt the problem, its the delivery. If u want a good visual novel murder mystery game, play the Ace Attorney series. DR just has some lame anime ass story
