This takes me back in time. I remember being a kid and thinking about what my intro of unrelated gaming footage spliced together would be if I ever had a countdown channel of my own.

I've recently seen a terrible new MOTHER video. This video is a godsend in comparison. And speaking of comparisons, you did a good job showing how MOTHER created an 'Urban Dragon Quest' setting while still maintaining its whimsy.

You know, it's no wonder video games have such a hard time doing pacifism right. The best part about pacifism as a part of a story is seeing how characters react to being spared and how it affects the plot down the line, which is going to take a lot of effort (scripting, writing dialogue, gameplay changes, balancing, graphics, and on and on) in a video game. Then, you'd think that maybe tabletop games like DND would fare better, since you're using your imagination and acting out the stories in real-time with real human beings, but in my experience, DND is just NOT designed for a pacifist character - it's designed around combat. The only real example of pacifism thoroughly explored in a game (aside from Off, which I think has a much different focus) is Undertale, which goes out of its way to make pacifism the entire point, but even then, it's not a very realistic take - pacifism is dangerous and might just get you killed, but if you can canonically just turn back time and try again when you die, there aren't a lot of stakes, are there? It's not really a moral dilemma so much as it is a commentary on obsession, nihilism and completionism, where the main reason to even do a genocide route is exactly the same as the reason to do a pacifist one - to see how the characters react. Even in Mother, the whole EVE segment on top of Itoi kind of undercuts the message they may have been going for. Is EVE supposed to be a flawed perspective, since it's not human? Well, if it is, it's kind of weird to just have it be narratively crucial to the survival of the party, isn't it? Bit of a rant about that one point in particular, but loved the rest of the video. Whole bit about Magicant being a microcosm of fantasy-JRPG tropes was amazing

Tonpa works very well as an early antagonist because he introduces the reader/viewer to the callous hedonism of the world of Hunter x Hunter. He also works as a fantastic foil to Leorio, who initially portrays himself as a selfish prick, but is actually selfless and kind hearted.

You’re the first person Ive actually seen talk about the connections between the two beyond a surface level. Which is weird because as a fan of both I came to conclusion that Itoi has a pretty big understanding of how a Dragon Quest game specifically works and it’s present in all 3 games.

Great video, I'll have to play both of these games someday. How would you say they scale in terms of typical NES RPG tedium since I'd say at this point good pacing wasn't quite figured out yet for this genre.

They also put characters who aren't evil (and thus are not villains) on the Wiki just because they commit crimes. For example, Necrozma from Pokemon. It isn't evil at all. The reason why it steals light from other worlds because it is in pain and needs to do it to survive. The second example is Eternatus, who is also from Pokemon. It's unknown whether it is evil or not and it might be doing this because it can't control it. But that's only in the games! In the anime, it's not a villain at all! It was just not used to people and couldn't control its power well. The anime Eternatus also helps the protagonists and wants to protect Galar. The third possible example are the Doomers from Kirby. I think that they might not be evil at all. What do they do? They steal the energy spheres because they like to eat them. It is implied that they are doing this because they want their space-time bending powers back. Since most of the energy spheres are found in Another Dimension, maybe they don't know that these spheres belong to someone or don't have a choice if they want their powers back. I know the description says they are "evil", but this might be to not spoil the fact that Magolor is a villain. Also, in Magolor Epliogue, the Doomers might be mind controlled by the Master Crown so it's not their doing.

Although I have yet to play a dragon quest and don't really have the actual context for which to compare, I do find it fascinating how Mother recontextualizes the abstracted medieval fantasy into what that would look like for people living in the present. How these stories translate to the real world as you say. Whether its the money to finance such an endeavour having to instead come from Ninten's parents bankrolling him rather than being acquired from slain creatures, the cruel and more realistic healthcare system, the limited storage capacity, the suburban sprawl of how the cities are portrayed, there was real effort made to articulate the idea of what these games mean when applied in the context of going outside.

I haven't finished Mother 1, but I will use this as an excuse to talk about Glory of Heracles. Particularly, GoH2 which is directly influenced by DQII (except, the hero can use Magic. Apparently GoH1 is basically DQ1, but with the Prince of Middenhal instead, since you control Heracles). The Prince of Cannock is replaced by a cowardly centaur that is pretty fast (so fast his Speed will eventually overflow, making him ultra slow. Which is kinda funny ngl). The Princess of Moonbrooke's replacement is a statue that needs to be finished to jokn you, mimicking the Princess being changed into a dog when you encounter her. I haven't gone far enough to adds more, and the translation I had was quite weak. And, since it's me, I will mention GoH4's relationship to legacy, because it's an interesting ones. You are the sole survivors of the lost Atlantis, 9000 years into the future searching back your bodies. Saving the world is secondary (and the only reason you ends up helping Heracles' Heroic Journey is because your friend started a family in this world). And obviously the entire conflict (and final boss) is the very concept of not being able yo accept death (leading to a funny scene with Hades who was the first Game's big bad). There's a lot to say here (the relationship between the Gods and the mortals, notably), and it's not exactly relevant, but I won't miss zn occasion to talk about it.

I've been going on a bit of a blind DQ marathon this year and when I was going through 2, several of the similarities to Mother 1 stood out to me (mainly the overworld music shift and the massive endgame difficulty spike, among some other small things u talked about at the start). Cool to see that I'm not the only one who thought that, but I didn't even realize how similar the party comps are gameplay-wise. The parallels and contrasts with their messages is also really fascinating. Honestly Mother pulls the party composition off alot better, Ana felt like a much more competent mage character than the Princess of Moonbroke, and Loid can be really valuable once u get Plasma Beams and Flamethrowers.

God that Prince of Cannock part has been living in my head for years. I also think in terms of gameplay they end up being very similar, due to how DQ2's equipment works. With the Power Shield, he ended up being more useful as someone who would sling items around instead of trying to smack or "thwack" enemies. Anyways Mother 1 is a superior game because DQ2 has Golden Baboons and the sacrifice spell gives me stomach ulcers.

Jasper is the Shinobu of 2. If you ain’t good at this point in the game he bends you over and rails you hard. I think his character is a good reflection of Travis too. Its not that the second phase is poorly designed, you just gotta be on your A game and actually explore the combat beforehand.
