"There is a nonzero amount of pop culture references added in but by now, that would be like saying there's some microplastics in someone's body" Is a banger line
It took me until the DS release of Chrono Trigger to realize the carpenter with the tools was an alcoholic. I thought he was so intent on soda that it must be a quest item or something as a kid
Honestly that fan one looks like the best one. We as a society need to return to the times where fan translators felt comfortable putting yugioh abriged memes in games like Thracia 776
If a clever reference can be weaved into the text discreetly and without dramatically changing the intent of the line, then it's not so bad. But when you start giving translations the Working Designs treatment (like specifically name-dropping Bill Clinton and June Cleaver in a fantasy world set in its own universe) and throwing in random pop culture references for the hell of it, it becomes distracting and cringe-worthy.
I also love the fact that Tellah using the word "spoony" is ACTUALLY CORRECT in this context - so it's not technically a mistranslation! It's an archaic term for "lovesick" or "foolishly amorous" and that describes Edward perfectly - and for an older character like Tellah, its usage fits well.
I still can't get over having a lifetime of seeing "You spoony Bard" and thinking it was a moment of silly whimsy and then seeing that moment in its full context. Perhaps the biggest loss of innocence since the revelation that the Shinji hospital scene wasn't white censored blood. I really am amazed at how well edited your videos are. I have to pause every few seconds just to catch all the jokes, and the on screen context of what you are currently discussing. You always put such comprehensive research into these pieces(and the jokes that accompany them) that I genuinely find you could be discussing any topic and I find it fascinatingly educational. Now give me a second to google who William Shatner is to see how based or cringe this translation is. Oh its star trek slander? Thats basically a star wars reference. The translators understood this series so well! Also I appreciate how you snuck in the entire anthology of Gogo's on screen appearances 😌
This was very funny, well edited and interesting! And even though the "audio quality on this channel" joke killed me, a good mic would truly bring it up a notch or two. Anyway, subbed :)
2:45 “Stupid localizers forcing in a Morbius reference.” Bruh, first of all, that line was a thing since the GBA version of FFV. Secondly, Morbius and all the memes weren’t even out yet when the Pixel Remaster version came out.
It's funny that you say the J2E is the worst translation when it is unfortunately the one I stumbled into when I decided to rmbark on a quest to play every mainline Final Fantasy game. (Except XI and XIV due to them being MMOs.)
I really like this video, but the loud music in the audio mix and I think you're speaking faster then you can enunciate, it's very difficult for me to understand every other word. Gettin through, because it's a quality vid, but I hope i can enjoy your future content even more
Not just you. This is a cool rundown of FF4's translation history for those unfamiliar, but it would be even cooler if you didn't have to read the subtitles to follow all of it. (Really common problem with informative gaming videos like this, and I've heard much much worse to be fair. The fact that there _are_ real subtitles solves like 90% of the problem.) Also, speaking of the insertion of ancient memes, I personally think really good line delivery is a requirement if you're going to do something like making the same Chad Warden reference six times.
It might interest you to know that the term "Spoony" is an old phrase meaning someone who's sentimental or foolishly lovestruck. Given the context, Tellah is basically calling him a "stupidly lovestruck bard", which is rather appropriate.
What do you mean? It was 2 sentence in Japanese, and 3 in English. Clearly the official translation is terrible! (Actually said by some dingus in the Course Party Blood Drve Gamefaqs board. The poor translator lost his sanity trying to justify his choices, press F for his soul) Another.. fascinating! example of multiple translations is Advance Wars Dark Conflict and Days of Ruin. From the very few I've seen, the fact one character is named Catleya in lne version and Isabella in the other seems quite telling of the tones of both, but I don't know Japanese, so I can't compare.

in America!
Tellah’s “YOU SPOONY BARD!” line is fucking hysterical as that Spoony Bard transcended dimensions and entered the world of FF16 xD

I liked you showing your sources throughout the video, it's good practice

Accidentally forgot to watch the rest of this video after looking up tornberry's English name

Please tell me calling Gilgamesh’s Power Rangers line a Morbius reference was a bit 💀
No I genuinely thought it was a Morbius reference. What made you think otherwise?
I think William Shatner is more convincing than your video

and to be fair i do have audio processing issues, I hope I didn't offend

Also why is it called j2e? I always think of Java 2 Micro Edition for contemporary phones.
I would guess it's because the Japanese and English languages were both involved. Allegedly.
Great video but the music is way louder than your voice, to the point that I can barely hear what you're saying most of the time.
What did you say about Chrono Trigger? Hmmm?

You can slow down a little when you talk, this isn't a speedrunning video.
Guess you couldn't handle the ADHD lifestyle.
What?
