Perfect segment. Invites us to consider whats meaningful in the larger context of influence to the younger generation and also the ability to laugh at the relatability of crossing the line of personal fun and public embarrassment. Thanks Dan and Danettes for always connecting with us through intelligence and spirit! Love you family :)
Two points: 1) I think Dan makes a very valuable point in the way in which championship parades are celebrated nowadays. It seems to me - and I may not be the only one who thinks this way - that they are getting to the point where the louder and more obnoxious, the better. And it doesn't solely relate to the way in which these victories are being celebrated, I mean in this sense of everyday life. I call it the "Instagramification of our day." Athletes and leaders should be very wise to know the responsibility they hold to one another, their organizations and the community they serve. 2) I was listening to this segment as I was driving to school. I was laughing so hard, I had to pullover to the side of the road to make sure I was going to hit anybody!! haha
It’s not on the players to limit the perception that alcohol is soaked all over our culture. It’s not on them. Its so far beyond them. It’s all over everywhere. Constant commercials, celebrities w new liquor brands, right along w gambling. If the players heard this segment they would say “F you I worked my ass off every single day for this title. I worked my whole life for this. Idc how the public feels, I’m celebrating.”
Now that I think about it, I’m amazed we haven’t really had some sort of major incidents at these things. Back when I was in high school a bunch of kids skipped school to drive to the SF giants parade. Maybe 1/3 actually watched one game. People were just going because it was going to be a weedfest and cops weren’t arresting people.
Tragedies have already happened in post-victory celebrations. It wasn't at the parade but at private party celebrations - Konstantinov from the Detroit Red Wings and the Georgia player and staffer earlier this year dying from a car crash.
Dan I really appreciate you thank you so much for this statement I love the fun the energy but the consequences can be so chaotic and the message is extremely mixed
1984. Yes, all of this started recently. The Tigers won the 1984 World Series in five games, but the celebrations that followed, attended by over 100,000 people, deteriorated into rioting. One person died, several more were injured, one Detroit Police Department car was set on fire, and four others were severely damaged. At one point, about 50 officers in riot gear chased a large crowd of over 6,000 people up Woodward Avenue from Hart Plaza. The rioting was widely reported internationally. Its most famous image was an Associated Press photo of Lincoln Park resident Kenneth "Bubba" Helms posing in front of the police cruiser that was torched.
Dan is the right man to say this. The message it sends to young men and ladies is NOT worth this behavior. Buzzkill is the right message. Thank you for bringing this out.
I work at Ball arena,& quit drinking 12 yrs ago,& I agree totally Dan.Back in mid 90s-esrly 00s,the Avalanche,& Broncos combined for 4 titles.I was at all those parades,& was 1 of those drunk,20ish yr olds-doing dumb shit,& getting way 2 drunk.I missed Broncos parade in 2016-when about a million showed up-but did go yesterday,& last yr for the Avalanche-when probably half a million showed up. And I agree 100%-why the last 2 parades,I took my teen daughters-but we watched both at the start of the parade route-then got the hell out of out there.I have a good parking lot-most people cant park in-since I work at the arena,-& most the reason we leave early is to avoid all the traffic coming back. But dealing with uber drunk/high morons-with my 13,& 14 yr old daughters there is also a main reason. At last yrs Avs parade-Bo Byrum whos 1 of my favorite Avs-was pounding beers-even though he was under 21. And even though I personally think alcohol age should be 18,(you can die in war-but not drink?)-the law says 21,& though Byrum didnt do anything crazy-but Im not sure its a good example the underage kid is 1 of 2 or 3 drunkest players.Honestly, its mostly bout idiot fans-& there was a shooting down there yesterday-& cuz the crowd pushed through barriers-it indirrectly led to a cop being run over by a fire truck,& suffering a serious leg injury.Yesterday, they said its possible they might have to amputate his foot or something. Some people will always go too far with it,& at times some of the players maybe egg it on-though they mean well, are just trying to have a good time with the fans & arent trying to spark anything dangerous. But ya gotta be careful.Party however ya want in the locker room/privacy of the team get together. But maybe dial it down a notch in front of 500,000 people-about 1/3 of which are drunk, dumb, young morons. But we still had a great time,& what a time to work at Ball arena,& for Kroenke sports entertaimment. Not many cities recently have won the nhl,& nba back to back. And though its WAY premature-both the Avs(not Vegas)-& Nugs are #1 odds on favorites for next yr in their respective sports.Health,& God willing-we COULD be having a combined Avs/Nugs title parade-in next few yrs-as bright of futures as both have on paper,& since both have already won a title with these cores,& PROVEN they can get it done. We are so lucky also-between the 2 teams-they not only have 5 SUPERSTARS under 30-but the RIGHT KIND of superstars.Jokic,Murray,Makar,Mckinnon,& Rantanen are all unselfish teammates, who are accountable, coachable, loyal to Denver, great in the community,& desperately care bout winning,& their teammates. They all work to improve their games & are clutch. Those qualities dont describe many narcicistic, selfish stars-as we all know well.Takes luck of course-injuries ruined the Nugs chances in 2021,& 22-& torpedoed the Avs repeat chances this yr.But if healthy-no city has a BETTER shot at more NHL/NBA title parades over the next half decade or longer.
Respectfully......repeat. Respectfully........been the biggest and most ardent Fan of DP.....he was the coolest and funniest on the Big Show. So when I saw him being real and amazing during the Radio HOF......I found a new respect for DP.....he was real, honest and Human!!!!!! It will always be so dope to me. I'm also old. Be Human. Absolutely agree! I live in Denver and so hoped it wouldn’t be like this. Kids are looking at these players they look up to and see this. Needs to stop
Something happens when you get older. Get off my lawn is a real thing. I understand people maturing but when you’re mature don’t tell younger people what to do. Just stay in your lane and live your life the way you want to
A lot of truth and I live in Denver and am a Nugget fan. Had similar thoughts. Crowd broke through a barrier and Denver Police stepped in-one had leg run over and trapped by fire truck and the man is going to lose his leg. Somebody threw the Joker a beer, but it hit his wife on the head. Seems like a sanctioned drunk fest. We can do better.
If Dan wants to feel vindicated he should check out some of the NRL Mad Monday atrocities that have been committed over the years. It's all fun and games until someone's photographed performing a lewd act with someone's pet.
I agree with Dan. As a Denver fan, I love the success of the Avalanche and Nuggets recently. But 10 people were shot early Tuesday morning. On Thursday, 2 more people were shot and a police officer had his leg run over by a fire truck. These celebrations are disconcerting as to who might get hurt. While it's only a very small minority involved, it gets scary.. Not just limited to the USA. 4 people were shot in Toronto during the Raptors parade 4 years ago.
Maybe it isn't the parades that are the problem. 2023 KC Chiefs Super Bowl parade - One person who was armed with a knife was arrested and a second person who “assaulted an officer just outside the parade route,” according to a KCPD spokesperson. The parade and rally were in celebration of the Kansas City Chiefs' victory in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles After the UConn Huskies defeated the San Diego State Aztecs in the 2023 NCAA Division I men's basketball championship game, 16 people were hospitalized and 15 people were arrested after a riot broke out on the University of Connecticut campus. Fans flipped cars and started fires, in addition to tearing down light poles and using them as battering rams to break into campus buildings.
Dan, this past January 2023, Chandler LeCroy was determined to be twice the legal limit when the vehicle she was driving (racing) crashed and killed herself and Georgia Bulldog Devon Willock after celebrating the teams championship victory. I think it is fair to say that it is already too late. 5 months after their death we can clearly see that alcohol abuse after a celebration victory is still occurring.
What was not heard during Coach Malone's drunken speech, right before he left the podium, was his final statement where he said... "Michael Jordan was a Horrible Player"
Thank you. Celebrating binge drinking as we watch the drunks act like fools, and especially with kids watching, is a problem. Dan’s right and good on him.
No one threw a can at Jokic’s wife. The can bounced three times before hitting her. Also, shots fired that night were a mile from the celebration. As usual, misinformation is used to further a narrative.
Malone was talking about getting his drink on all week before the parade. He fulfilled his own prophecy. He paid the price the next morning, as we all have. I say, let the boys have there fun, then cry about it later.
Agree, someone is probably going to get hurt at some point with this alcohol abuse. But a little hypocritical on the language point when you have "Suck it back row" flashing in the background.
Dan weeks ago said nuggets need to win to earn fair media coverage. Now they do win and get to celebrate and Dan thinks parades and celebrating are theatrical. Pathetic
it's a solid point, dan. but it won't play well. america thinks a good time is getting and being wasted. it's actually a pretty limited understanding of a good time.
Your 'buzz kill' is absolutely right on. Having a good time is fine. Having a 'hammer myself' public event is an awful example to be setting. And my observation is that athletes who have been, perhaps, on a low alcohol diet during the season, will get hammered way quicker than they might expect.
100% AGREE! I love to party but this is disgusting and HORRIBLE role modeling for our kids. These guys get paid millions, it's the LEAST they can do is GROW UP while in the public eye. And we are worried about depression in kids. DO BETTER guys!
These guys work very hard for dozens of years to get to the point where the parade is for their accomplishment. Lighten up. Little kids and language? RUclips has that language and worse. This is a nothingburger. Let these guys celebrate their accomplishment and years of hard work.
Whatever. If it's OUR favorite team that wins the chip we don't blink an eye over how they celebrate and glory in their achievement. We celebrate and glory with them. If they're not our team, well, Dan shows us here what we do. We criticize, mock, and cajole. Pretty lame, I think.
I think normalizing F bombs in every environment is not good. I didn’t want to hear Michael Malone say f that in front of kids and families in that setting. And yes wait til after the public celebration to get a little toasted.
I thought Malone had looked so good all post-season, but he embarrassed himself a little. I was embarrassed by him crying … it wasn’t the emotion. It was the booze. It was embarrassing. Again - amazing post season. But he looked like he was trying too hard.
Watch how after this show all the commisioners are going to approach the teams tell them that they can no longer do excessive celebration at there parade nor the celebration gathering...all because of DAN Says So.....Watch...Dan is a controller of what he wants done in sports...can yall see that ?
Dude relax. The only bad thing that happened on this parade was the soberest person in Denver drove over a policemans leg on the biggest firetruck in the Rocky Mountains.
What does Dan expect though?? Some rule be made where the players can only drink so much?? Is more red tape what we want? there is no good solution we can’t legislate morals
100 percent correct. All these commenters that disagree will be drunk at some point and do some foolish things. But that is what they are taught by society and advertising. To bad they cant figure it out for themselves.
Perfect segment.
Invites us to consider whats meaningful in the larger context of influence to the younger generation and also the ability to laugh at the relatability of crossing the line of personal fun and public embarrassment.
