    yii’s adventure was the best show I have ever seen in my life. The amount of life changing lessons the show provided was astronomical. One of my favorite moment in the series was when yee was like “yo do you need your problem solved” the guy was like “yea” and yee did the awesome cool thing and helped him. One of the anime moments of all time. This series was how I found my current (very real) girlfriend as well. I was pirating the show on my steam deck at the local grocery store and some girl came up to me and asked, “what that?” and I was like “yii’s adventure, im on the anti gravity arts ark” she thought I was so cool that I was watching the greatest show of all time in public that she said “cool”. anyway yii if you’re seeing this I just want to thank you for creating such an impeccable masterpiece of pure artistic integrity. And to yee, thank you for being such an inspiration.

    Something that definitely stood out to me in an isekai I like is actually slime isekai. The protagonist has a relatively static personality (at least in the first part,) but the story moved beyond the first group. It really built the world, then the characters so we know why the characters are doing this

    • @Epik950
      @Epik950 5 месяцев назад +8

      I agree with this, slime focuses more on Rimuru bettering the world around him more than himself since he was already is a decent repectable member of society in his past life (for the most part). I think thats why people don't see it as generic as other isekais out there these days where it is the world trying to develop the MC into a functioning member of society.

    I cant believe you put spider on the same level as vending machine. The spider world is actually very well thought out, and subverts a lot of tropes and and gives in universe reasonings and explenation of everything. The main character in spider is also very weird and quirky, making her not bland at all norself insert as the vending machine. The two of them are worlds apart in terms of quality of the world, character, mystery, set up and subversion of expectation. And to put them side by side and insinuateing that they are basically the same is insulting to my sensibility. The anime might not have adapted the light novel very well (as they show too much screen time on scenes to ground the show instead of the main characters wacky adventure), but even then if you've watched the show there is clearly a more though out story to be seen.
    Also sword is also pretty good (although not as groundbreaking as spider).
    Anyways, nice video.

    Seeing those shield hero clips reminds me that in that series, Naofumi suffers the opposite. Like, it was shown i nthe side-story the Reprise of the Spear hero that's he's a very average but really pleasant guy. Basically a cinnamon roll, but being Isekai'd is what breaks his legs, and he has to slowly works towards fixing a problem that he didn't had before being dragged into the world.
    And spoiler...
    He does work on himself with time, its a very slow recovery, neither the anime or the manga reached that point, only the Light novel did.
    So, it's funny and sad at the same time.
    Also, i reccomend reading the Reprise of the spear hero. It's a really cool manga. Had more fun reading that than with the main story.

    ... so... the fact that you brought up mushoku tensei and re zero shows that you can recognize quality shows even when they are from a genre you dislike. But... as a whole the genre is kind of weird, because after a while you get used to exactly what you said. It's like they copy pasted all the same types of scenarios over and over again for their stories like they are looking for a high grade on a test for it. But then you get that one story that was different and quirky and no one knew about that turned out really good, to the point it almost justifies all the other pointless reading to you. Mushoku Tensei was one of those series before it got an anime season and everyone learned it was good. Overlord is generally considered another if you can get past the CG. Then there is the ones that seem like they fit the standard you set of "one unique trait (or gimmick) outside of all the same tropes" but then you read it and you go, "holy crap, they really went a completely different direction then I was expecting with that." Out of the examples you used, I couldn't really get into the vending machine one, but I really got into the spider one. That author really knew how to write her fights like everyone was thinking three steps ahead and you had to be an extra two steps past that to survive. Then she had her B-plot which seemed like a standard Isekai, but was really to expand and explain on the world in ways the main character couldn't while she was fighting for her life, and also to show the difference between someone who coasts by content in the knowledge that they are already a winner against someone who has to drag herself up while in terrible situations without breaking.
    But the anime skipped so much that it was honestly a disappointing watch, the main character seemingly got stuff out of nowhere because it skipped all the scenes where she was learning and experiencing all that stuff fresh. And knowing that can happen to a story that I really enjoyed reading, I have to question how much it happens to other Isekai anime where they are trying to cram 15 volumes worth of content into 10 episodes. How many shows did I consider bland and uninteresting because the anime skipped over almost all of the character development of anyone interesting in the books? Then again, even as more of a reader than a watcher, there is still like a 1 to 10 ratio of fun to read isekai to boring waste of time isekai.

    • @keinkanal7382
      @keinkanal7382 5 месяцев назад +3

      Gonna be honest here, as someone who has read too much isekai LNs the more unique gimmicks dont even stand out that much anymore, and even when they go into directions unexected they often dont justify how bland worldbuilding is.
      I can pitch you a "unique" idea and guarantee you that there's at least 2 isekai stories covering it, each equally mid in its execution.
      Overlord for example sounds interesting at first, but then when you read the LN you kinda realise how much the author drops the ball and it just turns into a generic powerfantasy except the MC is evil, and woah look at that, there's 2 other stories I read that DO THE EXACT SAME THING IN A DIFFERENT WAY BUT BOTH ALSO FAIL BECAUSE THEY TURN INTO A GFENERIC POWERFANTASY.
      Re:Zero is actually one of the more unique ones in that it actually cares about exploring the inner life of the protag, but I think the author tends to prioritise writing misery porn over giving subaru a consistent character arc.
      Mushoku tensei seems ok at first until you realise that most of the story is just a vehicle for the MC to be a pervert and collect wives, and even tho he does have a consistent character arc, stuff like the erectile dysfunction arc really puts a damper on what could have been a good read.

    • @talonwinblood123
      @talonwinblood123 5 месяцев назад

      @@keinkanal7382 I suppose I did not get incredibly far in reading overlord, and yeah it's a power fantasy, but it's not like isekai is the only genre to usually devolve into a power fantasy. Re-zero... Yeah I have to be in the mood to read that one because the author doesn't mess around with putting Subaru through hell, but it seems like a light at the end of the tunnel type of story where the darkness is supposed to make the improvements around him stand out that much more. Mushoku Tensei a vehicle for the MC to be a pervert and collect wives... I gotta correct that one.
      How often in Mushoku Tensei does the story treat Rudy being a pervert as a good thing? Every time I can think of that it happens in the story it is then commented on as an undesirable trait by everyone around him including his love interests. It's a character flaw, and the series is willing to say that, but also show that knowing it's there doesn't immediately fix the problem.
      As far as him collecting wives goes, I mean it's considered the grandfather of isekai tropes for a reason, but even then how many female characters are present in the show who do not sleep with Rudy or even show attraction to him? The number is actually higher than the number of wives he gets which is super rare for an isekai. That's not even taking into account that the series continues past the point where he is settling down with his family no longer looking for romance and the fact that the problems of him and his world don't revolve around who wants to get into his pants today.

    • @keinkanal7382
      @keinkanal7382 5 месяцев назад

      @@talonwinblood123 it's a "flaw" because the story does not fix it, and just because its lampshaded doesnt excuse its inclusion.
      He absolutely does not get punished for it.
      its always just a "oops teehee" moment.
      He marries all 3 of the major female side characters, and should I clap just because he doesnot marry or fuck literally every woman he meets?
      and most characters are attracted to him, becuase he is shown to be charismatic most of the time undeservedly so imo.
      The arcs that I enjoyed the most were the ones that actually had him relate his bad IRL experiences to his current isekai'd problems, resulting in personal emotional growth for him. but these didnt happen as often as they should have.

    • @talonwinblood123
      @talonwinblood123 5 месяцев назад

      @@keinkanal7382 three major female side characters? There are a lot of other characters female included who spend almost the same amount of time in his presence in every one of those arcs. His two moms, his little sisters, the beastwoman teacher, the horny elf just to mention a few. And the story does fix it. yes he marries three woman, and then he limits his creep side a huge amount. No it does not vanish, because its a part of who he is that he can't get rid of completely even when HE wants to. That's the whole message of the story, the massive difficulties involved with personally deciding to change yourself for the better, and the support necessary to actually pull it off. I don't go into an anime with a main character who is obviously horny expecting him to have decided to abandon worldly desires by the end of it, that would require an entirely different story arc.
      So I suppose I had a few more moments I considered emotional growth for him, but that happens people have different perspectives on the same scene all the time.
      I will agree some of the girls who get attracted to him are interested in Kind of weird things though, and I'm not saying that him not sleeping with everyone is some sort of huge achievement. I'm saying the fact that the cast has a huge number of female characters who do not spend their time trailing after the main character like a bunch of lost ducklings is so rare it is almost unheard of in Isekai as a Genre if it has any kind of harem focus. How many times does anime let a character go off for more than a season to just do their own thing that's completely different from what the story is focusing on? Yet Mushoku Tensei will occasionally switch focus to someone who's been completely absent for two books just off doing their own equally important thing, I appreciate that the cast can make their own decisions without the main character being informed or even related to what's going on.

    My issue with isekai is that it's just the new 'prophecy', i.e. a plot device to explain why the main character is special without them actually being special. Instead of writing a character that has an interesting reason to go do stuff (either through personal drive or some event in the world that starts their journey), the beginning incident is as detached from the world as possible. So without any world or personality related reasons to go adventuring, the void is filled with the first thing that comes to mind with one 'twist' to get some artificial uniqueness.

    I hate that fantasy and isekai are considered one and the same...
    I saw a video the other day titled something like "Frieren singlehandedly saved the fantasy genre".
    No it didn't, because it doesn't need any saving, watch something that isn't an Isekai like Goblin Slayer and you will see it's just all this cheap slog that's bad, not the genre.
    It hurts specially when Youjo Senki exists... An awesome story about a japanese salaryman turned german loli in magical WWI challenging God.
    The setting is so refreshing by simply being a setting and not a fucking videogame or cookie cutter fantasy place, even if that setting is "low fantasy WWI"
    It's my favourite Isekai by far, maybe because it's so different from all the others it barely applies to the genre outside of the basic premise.
    I wish more isekais were like it and thoroughly recommend it.

    Idk how to word this comment, but I agree with your points.
    While there is nothing inherently wrong about doing tropes, it must be done well or uniquely to make it different from another anime doing the trope. Otherwise, it's just the same anime over and over again. Another thing that kinda irks me is the existence of isekai animes where the protag is reincarnated as a tool or inaimate object. like, what is the fridge going to turn into? A better fridge with 1000 liter volume, anti-frost technology, space-max design, better wattage, and more compartments? Is the sword going to evolve into a demon sword? Or God forbid, a HOLY SACRED sword?
    I honestly don't know what to say in this comment, I'm just spewing random stuff, but man. Isekai is really boring. It's either a power fantasy, or something that becomes one at a certain point. I also don't like the concept of worlds having level systems and the like. I mean, sure, in something like Overlord it makes sense, but you can't tell me out of all the hundreds of isekai stories out there, 90% of them have this system.
    I honestly just don't like isekais lol (except for the very few rare good ones)

    It's a crime what's been done to the concept of "isekai." It's just become a term describing one type of regurgitated story... But, like, isekai's been a thing since before Mushoku Tensei cloned itself into infinity. Digimon World, Spirited Away... I can't really list them cuz I don't save them with the "isekai" tag in my brain 🙃 Oh well. There's always that one trendy thing everyone copies. At least in all that deluge there's the occasional interesting thing.

    Last year I had a high-fever and had a dream of an isekai that has the protagonist die and go to the afterlife to met god but heaven is empty, the throne is empty and nobody guards the gate, god is dead and the MC ends up in the world and wants to find out who killed god, presumably the murderer is in that "another world"
    It was a fever dream so there is nothing much to work with but honestly it always stuck with me the idea of dying, finding out there is an after life and subsequently learn that god is dead to be so fucking metal that it stuck with me.

    I prefer Isekais that has the MC transported to a fantasy world that is technologically advanced while also having some supernatural stuff, kind of like Arknights Terra. Heck, the Isekai story with the R6 crew felt more interesting because of the difference between Earth and Terran technology.
    (I even made an Isekai fanfiction for Arknights xD)

    In early days, isekai genre (it doesn't exist as a genre at that time, so is truck-kun) is good, has story, finding a way home. nowadays its peak genre along with harem. Isekai is escapist. Enjoy them for what they were. They will be tons of it in the future as it is now.

    i wish ORV would get an anime, i know its more like a reverse-isekai but the manhwa was just so good (and i heard the novel is amazing too) that it just needs an anime. I hope with the Solo Leveling anime, studios will adapt more manhwas. ORV is so good that no other power fantasy type media even compares. Its Solo Leveling with 10x more complex and interesting worth, 10x better MC, 10x better plot, 100x better side characters. ORV and Solo leveling cant really be compared because in reality the only similarities are that their world get invaded, theres a game like system, and they can both be considered power fantasies.

    Since we are on the topic with the Isekai, worldbuilding and character, here are some of my recomendation that have all those 3 in good balance. Be advised though because it contain minor spoiler.
    1. Ascendance of Bookworm
    Anyone who watch this Anime probably already knew that this anime worldbuilding is topnotch. The series does not bombard you with infodump at the beginning about the world the MC lives. The information the MC got is literally only through her children eyes and children ears. At first she thought she was transmigrated to the medieval era with very poor sanitation, hygiene, her family literally throw toilet waste out from windows btw, and more importantly for her and her story, extremely low literacy rate. Then she found a number plate that telling the prices of the fruit at the market, then a book, then a magic contract, then a magic gate, then a magic church, then maybe at the noble district found more magic?
    About the character of the MC herself though. At the start, Some maybe found her character is off putting because she is 'Annoying' or 'Egoist' even for a 20 years old female. Now mind you, she WAS annoying and egoist even before her being transmigrated to isekai, and I found it was, as expected? You see, MC in her past was a single children in a middle income family in modern japan with all of its technology and convenience she naturally have. Then suddenly she transmigrated as a children in a low income family in the past without technology, convenience or without book that she loves, and then you expect her to be just, "oh okay all right, I can adapt."? But thats not important here, what important here is, her character GROWTH. She LEARNS how not to inconvenience other, not to be selfish and help her family with the mind she have and with her weak sickly children body.
    Even other character aside MC feels natural and alive. There is no real antagonist here in this story since all character have agenda and their own principal, so conflict nonetheless arise, just like in real society live btw.
    If you have never heard nor watch this series, and you're looking some fresh slice-of-life like isekai anime, give it a shot. I guarantee you, you're in for a ride.
    2. Otherworld Restaurant.
    Now maybe you were thinking, how an anime about FOOD can be a good fantasy worldbuilding materials? Well you might be right, but this anime is about to prove you were wrong.
    This series, either Anime, manga or even its LN come in Episodic. One episode tells a group of people only tell one kind of story. Then the next episode come another different people with different story, seemingly not connected to each other. But then come other episode that explicitly telling you that it was connected with the far past episodes. Then, in realization, like connecting a puzzle piece you came to an understanding about the world itself, about the people living there, and about the impact of the food from the Otherworld Restaurant which its door only open to this world once for every seven days.
    Now about the character itself, I would argue there is no true protagonist in this story. You maybe say the chef and his waitress is the MC here, but they're only there as the part of the story, not the one who moves the story. This anime is more emphasizing on interaction and conflict between society of the otherworld instead of the character.
    If you interested, you can skip the anime and just read the LN, it has more nuance and detail that are lost in the anime. But the anime itself is not bad, Its cozy, its food p*rn basically, and more importantly, its pulls you in to the world itself.
    I have more in my mind actually, but this comment is already so long, so if anyone has other recomendation that have good balance between Isekai, Worldbuilding and character that are not mentioned in the video, please tell me.

    Log Horizon might be my favorite isekai (bookworm's stiff competition.) The main character was a normal dude with steady employment and friends. He was just hanging out playing WoW with them, and they all got sucked into the game along with a bunch of other guys. Now they have to basically build a civilization, get other adventurers to understand This Is Life Now, and make diplomatic relationships with the NPCs. All the while they have to fight raid bosses and train low level players and so on.
    Dying in the game doesn't kill the players (and there are hundreds), just loses their memories of the old world. This isn't true of the npcs who do die when they're killed.

    speaking personally, ive always thought that it was a weird missed opportunity to always have the protagonist be like, a schoolkid, or an office worker. yeah, i get its supposed to be a self insert most of the time, but like, can't you play around with the concept some more? it's a story about opposing worlds colliding! have none of you ever had your transformer toy fight your generic fantasy dragon toy that you later found out was charizard but because you never got into pokemon you didnt know?
    as for myself, i'm still waiting for a story where a post-nuclear apocalypse survivor like from STALKER, fallout or metro (with mutants, anomalies and magic radiation) ending up in a fantasy world that's "on the brink of ruin" but everywhere he looks he sees green grass, lush trees and rivers flowing with clear water and just calls bullshit
    and then he shoots an ogre with an AKM enchanted to fire acid rounds
    of course, being a survivor of a radioactive hellzone also means his face and body are scarred and deformed, so that also rules out the generic harem that would flock to him for saying please once per episode

    I do enjoy worldbuilding, and let me tell you : Tropes are tools. You cant build a story or a world without tools. "You write ? What an idiot, me, in my world, there's no words nor writing, because it is so cliché!"
    Yet, what isekai factories do, is trying to make a story out of tropes. While you can't build without tools, you could, technically, make a world that is only made of tools. It will be something shitty.

    funny enough, my fav isekai anime.. isnt exactly an Isekai per-se
    i am talking about MagiRevo. Yes, that "Isekai" anime about a Princess and a Genius Magician
    And before you ask.. yes, its a Girls Love anime.
    And me being GxG lover.. i am maybe a bit bias ;p
    a bit of a spoiler warning btw
    But, the way they build the relationship between the two is really commendable. They didnt just met the first time and immediately say "lets bang" (technically Anis did since she immediately take Euphilia the moment she got dumped by her (Anis) brother)
    No, they started as acquiantance to restore Euphy's honor, then gradually got closer (more on Euphy's side since she starting to like and envy Anis more), with a couple of big story moments in-between, and then setting their biggest difference to rest with a BATTLE against each other.. which led to them finally confessing to each other.
    And them becoming Queen and Queen. Yes, they INDEED got married. And the anime leave it at that. AFAIK, the LN/Manga explored their relationship further, and it got even better.
    Really love it. Actually hope Yii gonna check that one out someday. Its worth the watch.

    Animation is expensive, thus having Self Inserts for broad swathes of the market is less risky. Books, webnovels, fanfiction, and the like, which is much less expensive, or done as a hobby, can experiment much more freely and you can find much more interesting protagonists, if you know how to look.

    Hmm actually good Isekai eh? Obvious ones would be stuff like Bookworm or Log Horzion but boy do they go heavy on world-bulding.
    Potential Hot Take, I would say one of the better Isekais recently, if you don't want to fall down the world building hole, is (WTF is with the English tittle) "Life with an Ordinary Guy who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout". Either way despite being light on world building and following many of the tropes I think it succeeds due to actually interesting characters (the main duo have actual character dynamics and growth). It also teeters into parody territory, but more so that it plays the tropes straight and points out many of the absurdities with them.

    Konosuba is probably the only isekai that I really love. It doesn't feel like a self-insert or a power fantasy. Heck it doesn't even feel like an isekai. All the characters, and even the side characters, have distinct and humorous personalities. Kazuma is an average guy and can be quite scummy but most of the time the situation backfires on him for our enjoyment. The objective of the show isn't to show how cool the main character's cheat skills are or how he can use his superior modern world IQ to revolution a medieval world. It's just a ragtag group doing shenanigans.

  • @Nightmare_52
    @Nightmare_52 5 месяцев назад

    i really like Knights and magic
    protag gets reincarnated as a kid and sees pretty much no point in living because there isnt anything like his hobbies from back home, mech figure building and mech anime
    then one day his wagon gets attacked by a ginormous insect and he is saved by a giant mech which rekindles his will to live because he is literally living in medieval gundam world
    so he goes to school properly and improves the mechs by hundreds of years in a short time because he is building himself up the skills to get his own gundam mech eventually, he isnt inherently stronger than anyone else he just has mech knowledge and how to write scripts that lead into him understanding the way magic works differently from anyone else, but he lacks the refinement other people can bring to mech building as his designs run out of power too quickly to be practical which the people already living in that world can help with as they know the fundamentals better
    also no shoehorned love plot because he only loves machines so there is no space in his heart for human love (as far as i know because it only had 1 season, manga could be different eventually i have no idea) but season 1 is a banger if you like big mechs and quite a lot of audible gasps from the people around the protag
