All we really know is someone is responsible for his time loop but we don't know who(tho is heavily implied), we don't really know why and that the cult wants Emilia dead and that's literally all we learned about the plot across 24 episodes
Re:Zero might not be considered a masterpiece. But for me it certainly is. It’s the only isekai that has ever made me that invested. The fact that is different even from other genre anime is really cool, particularly in the fact that the main character bares everything on his shoulders. For me it is a gem that deserves more love than many other anime, especially isekai anime (we all know why...)...

Ahahah yeah. It is really obvious at this point who really searched about re:zero. Tho I cant blame gigguk. He is only critisizing the anime. Many things were left out in the anime. It must be hard to see the big picture because of that. Hopefully things will change with season 2!
It is the matter of taste, mother's basement loves that kind over the top, full waifu, light highschool drama, different universe anime. Just look at his top series of the decade, for me, i disagree with many of those anime except for erased and mob psyho

Because Rem was the only one to actually give a fuck about his problems? Everyone else seemed to revolve around themselves and Suburu just goes along with it.
No one has actually took the time to go "Hey! There's something wrong with you... I *understand* you are hurt inside. I'll do whatever I can to help." I mean to be frank, the real problem girl here is Emilia, cuz she's the only reason why Suburu is going throigh all these shitty deaths in the first place.
Rem has been the *only* love interest that is willing to be a support through the time loops rather than every other character who is just more invested in caring about themselves and not wanting to take time in understanding Suburu.
It was a heartbreak to be so invested in Suburu's character and the suffering he's endured and when he's finally found someone who is willing to take some weight off his shoulder's, he goes "Kay thanks, but I still want that one girl who didn't care for me at my worst!"
I actually really loved Subaru because of how he's kind, but also because he is a very flawed character. I'm sick of all the perfect heroic archetypes.
Hakuoro The fact that he is so useless made me so angry that i almost dropped it around episode 15 because even do he has a positive attitude he is arrogant to a extreme. I kept watching and was happy when he realized his mistakes and then finally he became a better man. I was so used to watching Op MCs that I didn't want to accept his reality and felt bad in a way but it all worked out in the end.😢
He doesn't seem authentic or deep for most of the anime because he wasn't, that was the entire point. His flaws were on full display, his blind arrogant courage making him charge idiotically forwards until finally the beatdown in the arena and loss of Emilia broke him. Then the torture afterwards shattered what was broken. It was only through the support of Rem he finally made the transition to beating his own demons and shallowness. She allowed him to see the good things he managed to accomplish because he was kind and the progress he'd made via his determination hidden under all the shitty bluster.
The point of the first season was world building and character development, not progressing a plot. An anime does not need to have a gripping plot to be good. Think of Re Zero as a sadistic slice of life character drama/tragedy rather than something trying to tell a story.
The problems with his character have been recognized fully in the light novel. The light novel after the anime really has the most mindfucking arc and Subaru also faces himself and his family that he left behind, and he faces his uselessness and the arc also faces his habit to always do things alone.
Need anime season 2 then lol.

In Japanese you often omit the subject of a sentence since you are supposed to infer it from context, neither Subaru or Emilia said "he" or used any male pronouns (or any gendered pronouns at all for that matter).
Basically the translator messed up since you had to remember Patrasche was female due to the lack of any gendered pronouns. (Subaru used "aitsu" which can both mean he and her depending on context)

Yeah, the major plot starts in the next Arc, unfortunately. So for people, who can only watch the Anime and have no other source of information, your review pretty much sums it up perfectly.
I agree. Even though I am one of those people who watch the anime only, I can tell that the first arc is simply opening up to the incoming plot ahead. It's pretty obvious, really, especially the hints that Subaru is blessed by the witch and may or may not be Pride.

Like 200%? Since it's orginally based on a LN, that adaptes a web novel. And the Anime currently covers 100% of the LN and like 40% of the Web Novel. The author stated, that web novel is roughly halfway through.
the lightnovel just finished at arc 3, just like the anime (but the anime skipped a few scenes, especially the "real" end of the arc is not in the anime); the webnovel is at arc 6 at the moment, and re zero is expected to have around 11 arcs. Oh and arc 4 is as long as arc1-3 combined.

The first time I watched it. It was entertaining. The 2nd time I watch it - I realize the show captured mental illness and suicidal tendency perfectly. From how the protagonist grow from delusion of one self - depression - despair - self preservation and onto how he tried to earn back his value and respect of others. The protagonist is a self-centered entitled person that despite how pure and innocent his intention or how Emilia see him in the beginning can be, that itself is a facade. His self-righteous act was self serving. It was only until he confront his madness (sin of sloths and - the ego self which sloth called him pride) thus he finally becoming more stable and more respectful. He was nothing but a self absorbed child wishing to bend the rules to fit his circumstances. Just like how he self proclaimed he is a knight to Emilia (I think this arc or plot line wanting to show the tendency of laying claim over someone else just because you "love" them).
Edit: the best example I think is when sloth chased after the carriage for the love of the witch that lingered on Subaru. He was just ugly as when Subaru is when he deluded himself chasing after his "desire" but havent done anything to earn it, sloth didnt respect the witch wishes - Subaru didnt respect Emilia promise and got beaten up by knight.
I said this show caputered suicidal tendency is because of this "Even you know you are going to fall, it still hurt doesn't it?" He thinks his problems can be solved by dying - but dying itself still hurt. With each iterations when he thinks it is okay to die - he failed at what he set out to do. With the one that he lost his mind, he lost the people around him. It is only when he stopped deluded himself of his capability and started reaching out for help and work his hardest can he achieve what he set out to do. Yes sometimes he still die and got broken from the trials, but only when he kill his "weakness" thus he grow. I think this shows speak a lot more than you think.
Like the saying, you havent really watch Re Zero if you only watched it once.

The season that released recently shows that Roswall, ever since meeting Subaru has been purposefully causing all of the painful scenarios for Subaru in an attempt to make Subaru more like himself. and a lot of plot pieces are connected explaining a lot of stuff we didn't understand before.
Yes people are so dumb if they think everything happens in coincidence or something. Check facial expression of Roswaal in Season 1 when Subaru look at him.

Believe it or not. This isn't the actual show. It is just the introduction. Yes, that is correct. This is JUST THE INTRODUCTION.
I've read the translated light novel chapters and there are currently 10 volumes of the novel itself and within each is around 4-5 chapters. Arc 4 has 140 chapters and the other volumes, well I honestly don't know but I'd guess they have the same amount as arc 4 or maybe less.
This season of the anime ended at the end of volume 3. The story itself starts to be set in motion after the events that take place through volumes 1-3. It is confirmed that volume 10 is not the final volume, in fact, it is no where near close according to many people. So far from what has been translated, this next arc of the story seems to have high expectations and also looks to be very entertaining to read. Oh yeah and... We get some confirmation on pretty big stuff. Other than that, everybody can expect a lot from what's to come from the Re:Zero series. Trust me it is worth watching.
"Oh no! Re:Zero did not outright tell us all the plot details in the first 25 episodes and leave us in suspense wanting more. It's bad!" (Is the reasoning I have heard though. Also that they did not choose to end episode 25 with a cliffhanger, but take a soft ending/pause was also bad. I suppose. )

Captain Shamoe Translation chicken. They have up to volume 4 chapter 8 which is the furthest ahead so far. They have the quickest translations out right now.
"This is just the introduction" you say, not realizing that most light novel adaptations that are "just an introduction" never get a second season, and Re:Zero might very well not get one either.
How is it that thousands of long stories' "introductions" are like a few chapters, but Re: Zero's is *25 episodes*, with no hint to what the story is actually going to be?
I don’t understand why everyone hates Subaru. I mean he suffered a lot just to save others. He is actually a realistic character, he doesn’t became a hero so easily, he feels powerless and he has to find a way to do things that a regular anime’s main character could do effortlessly. He isn’t buffed to the max.
@@Yasef-n5n Its pretty reallistic actually. Like its what ACTUALLY would happen if an otaku is transported to a fantasy world. They wont actually get any super strengths or magical beam powers. His only luck is fate. And he is the weakest of them all lol.
His characters are indeed flawed and he is super arrogant. But his arrogance, stupidity and his bad attitude is what makes the character unique, means the character isnt perfect. He learnt from his mistakes and gave up his pride and then his character developed better. I was rooting for him when he realises his mistakes.
This character is super reallistic and I totally love it.

Tho I personally like his personality which is even after so many suffering, he is hard to give up and let go. If I were him, I'd cut every bond I have with the others and try to escape any danger rather than losing my mind.
Of course, if he doesnt suffer, nobody will like him. Thats true. But since its an anime, to make his character at least interesting, you gotta give him something. Either super powers, overpowered, strengths, weakness, or suffering to make his character likeable.
In this anime, I like Subaru's character because he is weak and isnt strong like other protagonists. Even if his character is meant to be sympathized by everyone, giving him a weak character is cool for a protagonist (my opinion).
If he doesnt have a weakness, strength, super powers, suffering, tragic stories, the character will be super bland. Of course it would be boring.
Who would watch an anime that has that protagonist?
@@Yasef-n5n Subaru, at this point in time, doesn't actually have a "power". RBD is a curse/blessing (depending on one's POV), because he doesn't have any control over it. Let's see, how much does Subaru know about RBD at the end of arc 2?
He gets transported to a specific point in time when he dies. That's it.
Is there a limit to how many times he can die? He doesn't know. (Towards the end of ep 7 he worries if he gets revived again if he dies a fourth time in that loop.)
When does the "savepoint" get updated? He doesn't know.
Why did the witch give him this curse? He doesn't know.
How can he even find out anything about it? He has no fucking idea. Dying doesn't give him any information, it only strengthens the witch's miasma that envelopes him and he didn't even know that until Beako told him.
People complain about him not abusing RBD (which he starts doing later anyway because he doesn't really have any other choice), without even considering that he has no idea about eventual limits of it. Also, apparently dying feels pretty shitty, how surprising.
They complain about him being unlikeable, although he's shown some positive traits from the beginning, like being actually really damn kind, somewhat courageous and trying to protect those close to him. Yes, he does have many more flaws, like acting cringy 80% of the time, entitled, arrogant, selfish, inconsiderate, short tempered... Almost like your average otaku, but a bit more likeable in the end.
But since the human mind is such a convenient thing, his positive traits get either blocked out or downplayed.
They complain about him choosing Emilia over Rem, as if that actually counts as a character flaw.
And yea, he is meant to be sympathized for his suffering, otherwise the show couldn't even give him a chance to grow.
Well, S2 will go deeper into his character origins anyway.
PS: Would I want to be friends with a person like Subaru? Probably not. Maybe if he has similar hobbies
@@Yasef-n5n (I'm an LN reader who finished vol 11 yesterday) Yes, we weren't shown any limits to RBD, but how is Subaru supposed to know that? For all the information he has, even at the end of season 1, dying just one more time could be the end. You have to look at it from the point of the protagonist. Of course we, as the viewers, know that he won't stay dead. But he himself can't know for sure, unless some sort of person who has like almost all the knowledge in the world tells him that there probably are no limits. Considering this, spending lives on doing something like "training" or just testing random stuff seems like an unnecessary risk.
A rule that says "exactly 3 days before" can't work. Assuming the witch loves him, she wouldn't allow that. After all, there'd be a possibility that it leads to an unavoidable dead end.
About "kindness" - the most obvious example would be the end of arc 2. He definitely didn't have to risk death by saving Rem. Nobody would've faulted him for being unable to save Rem, yet he did so, because she was already precious to him. And I believe the very fact that she is precious to him, which shows that he puts more weight on the positive time he spent with her than the negative time, is also a sign of kindness.
As for courage and protecting close ones, we were talking about positive traits, not unique ones. Of course most MCs would have those traits, precisely because they are positive.
I don't know about your definition of otaku, but I define them as anime/manga fans who spend an extraordinary amount of time and maybe money on these things. From my experience, most of them show certain extreme views, or very distinct traits. Acting in ways that would turn away most people who have none or very little interest in anime culture, talking about waifus a lot, depreciate non-anime fans, etc. I guess for me it has almost the same meaning as "weeb" or "weeaboo", but in a more commonly applicable way.
Many of them would act similar to or even worse than Subaru when thrown into the same situation.
The violence is the result of the plot, which, as far as I can judge, is about the witch, the witch cult, and Emilia's ascension to the throne. I don't really see the need to justify the violence. That's like asking to justify the violence in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. So, the point of Re:Zero? Maybe it's about overcoming hurdles, maybe it's just a fantasy story with controversial themes, I'm not sure. I don't think we can assume the point, since we haven't even seen a quarter of the story...
Let's just say it's about Patrasche being best girl (with Rem sleeping directly behind her)

Jake Adams wdym the author finally knows where the story is going? The author had always known. It’s just that ep1-18 was the prologue of the show and the episodes after that are kinda introducing the audience to the witch cult, Petelguese becomes important later too in a backstory and the white whale also is important later with the whole Astrea family. I admit lots of foreshadowing was cut from the anime like the whole thing with Al. And the foreshadowing that was there was mostly left unnoticed like the Japanese carvings on the tree before the battle against the white whale so most didn’t rlly notice which is sad. Honestly I think most ppl think this is because of how weirdly season 1 ended off, it made ppl believe the seasons were supposed to have that kinda split... it’s better to think of it as a direct continuation from season 1 but it’s hard to forget that 4 year gap between seasons... but yeah I agree the plot is rlly starting to kick in
Edit: oh yeah and the world building, yes the world building is given more emphasis in s2, but i rlly loved how subtle it was in season 1, like how at the beginning, Subaru makes a joke about being from the island to the East and Emilia corrects him saying there’s no kingdom to the East. I’m not completely sure but I think it’s a hint at how Satella swallowed half the world in her shadows.

Jake Adams hm, okay that's fair enough, i can't rlly defend it in that sense... but something i liked about it was how realistic the beginning was, Subaru being clueless like how someone would be if they were suddenly transported into another world. i know that's probably not a great reason and lots of people can get bored,, but i still love it. random conflict? uh yes, it's hella random actually, i agree. i didn't have much of a problem with it slowly setting up Emilia being a royal candidate and Felt being one too as well as the others in the first arc, and also Reinhardt, it introduces all those characters and is very subtle with the foreshadowing, Elsa saying stuff about who she's working for. Honestly I wish the foreshadowing wasn't this pushed back in the background in the anime. i like to say to ppl that re:zero is hella slowly paced in season1, even though so much seems to be happening, it's barely scratching the surface of any plot or characters. Okay and saying re:zero did barely anything compared to other long running shows? well... my main point is that lots of those long running shows have so many fillers and the arcs mostly arent that connected to each other. re:zero has a very clear over arching story and lore, every character playing a crucial role. i don't even like to think about re:zero having separate arcs cuz in the end, they all contribute and link together.

I agree with allot of your points stated in this video and as a Re: Zero fanboy who has read all the current story, I can explain some of your questions and doubts.
First of all, you said that the story did not have much of a point and was not really going anywhere. This is simply because how long the whole series is. The anime covers only 3 arcs and the web novel goes till the 6th. And I know you may question, "That does not seem that long.", but the 4th arc alone is longer than the first 3 combined. So if there was a season 2, then it would be a one arc 24 ep season. The author of Re: Zero Tappei Nagatsuki has said in an interview that The entire length of Re: Zero will be around 12 arcs. That'd take like 6 seasons to complete Re: Zero. That's at least 5 years away. Subaru has so many goals he needs to complete and he has new problems, enemies, and catastrophes he has to fight through like every step.
So it may seem slow (because it is), but imagine jogging 5 miles but being mugged every 3 steps. I'd compare it's pace and progression to a long-running shounen. That's basically Re: Zero's overarching story exemplified in a sentence.
Secondly, everyone seems to question Subaru's love for Emilia. In the second arc when Subaru was completely broken down and was about to give up, Emilia was the one who saved him with the lap pillow. She was his only salvation at a time when literally everything was killing him including Rem. Emilia was the first one that was nice to him. Also, I personally think the anime portrays certain characters incorrectly. The light novel is extremely descriptive of the characters and everyone is much more likable. Emilia is always described with a cheerful smile and their trademark back and forth banter and interaction is dulled down compared to the novel. One example is how Emilia tends to use very unorthodox words and phrases in the book and subaru always points them out.
Like at one point Emilia says, "If you're pulling my leg I'll clobber you!" and subaru responds, "Nobody says clobber anymore..." And this happens all the time.
In the anime, allot of character interaction and such is left out. In the book, Subaru is much closer to Ram in the second arc and in the anime she gets like no attention compared to rem.
This turned into a little rant, but I hope I helped someone who happens to read this comment be a little more informed. I know it's allot, but Re: Zero is my passion and I have a pretty high typing speed.

well if you only watched season 1, it really is not a masterpiece, but truly entertaining and the character developments are good. The reason why is it not a masterpiece because in season 1, there are many things that go unexplained. like why is subaru coming back to life, what reason, yes the witch did it, but why. How did the witch knew subaru, and why is she aware that there are other worlds or alternate reality.
well, now that season 2 is released, I can now call this a masterpiece. Some might disagree but keep watching. The Re:Zero plot is something that keeps its story a mystery. Kind of like Attack on Titan, but on a much slower pace. In season 2, many questions will be answered, though some will still be a mystery that will be explained in the future seasons.
This statement is purely based on my opinion. I love Re:Zero. It's my best loved anime so far. Something in it makes me want to watch it more. The character developments are so good. The plot is nice if you started to watch the season 2. It's a masterpiece for me. One of the 2 animes that has a place in my heart, the other one is Kimi no Nawa (Your Name).
And i quote a man," Re:Zero is the show where in season 2, you will be answered all your questions from season 1.... And then be left with a million more questions in the end"

Re: Zero is one of the few popular anime that I actually enjoyed, which I normally don't. The fact that the show is so packed that they can't even spare a minute or two for the OP and ED. It uses a pretty cliched setting but it sure used the setting to its fullest. I don't know how to express how much I've enjoyed this show but it's definitely NOT a masterpiece, it's enjoyable to watch and it really lived up to the hype, but it is not the best show, not one of the best either. It's rich, it's packed, it's fun and it's straightforward, that's it.

When you talk about the central motor of the story, it think its more about Subaru himself. I think the actual meaning of the series is to probe how someone without no power at all surrounded by a lot of powerful people, can actually change a lot of things. Both in the mansion as in the final part when he fights the Witch Cult, it starts with him being irrelevant and everyone kinda thinking he is just an useless being, but at the end he finds a way to have everyone liking him and admitting that he is actually very important.

While some of the complaints you have are answered later in the series, I agree with most of what you say, even if I'm a huge Re:Zero fanboy I recognize that the author started the series because he was pissed from all the generic LN protagonists and their plot armor, because of that he made a story of a useless main character who can only make progress after suffering, it wasn't until the last part of arc 3/beginning of arc 4 that he realized where he wanted the story to go.
The anime only covers the first 3 arcs, so it is bound to be kind of all over the place, but if it gets a second season you'll see that the story is more cohesive than now, but as an anime only I understand your view and I'll admit the show has flaws.
And finally, for those haters who say "Re:Zero is shit, whaaa whaaaa whaaaaa", how about you make your own series if you believe you're soo good that you can do better, come on you cunts, show me what you got.

From watching the anime alone, I think I get what kind of writer Nagatsuki Teppei is: Someone who is extremely strict on the focus of every arc, instead of weaving in narration and character development at the same time, for smoother pacing.
Me neither, if someone likes or dislikes something it is fine, it's their opinion and I'll respect it even if I disagree with it, but I can't respect someone who hates something without even giving it a chance, if they don't want to be close to it fine, but don't go hating something you don't know anything about nor insult someone for having a different opinion than yours.
In a sense yes, Nagatsuki Tappei prefers to focus on the goal on sight while giving the characters who are the focus at the time the development they need, while leaving clues to future events that allows the story to make sense in the grand scheme of things, while also giving the series rewatchability, I know it isn't for everyone but personally I love that kind of writing.

Yeah, from what I've read I can say that Tappei likes to go slow to not lose grasp of what is going on with the story, which can make it drag because the plot doesn't go anywhere. Normally that would be poor writing like you said, and Re:Zero isn't excused for doing it too, but I like to give the man a bit of leeway because this is the first time he writes a story and even with all the writing flaws the series has I must admit Tappei really makes Re:Zero damn interesting and inmersive.
That's something that I love about this series, it makes things that seem useless have a meaning in later parts, which makes you see that everything has a purpose and there isn't any kind of filler, while also making you feel that kind of "Wow, so that's why that was there" because it isn't spoonfed to you, that's very clever in my opinion.

On the contrary, even though I also felt relieved at hearing him personally "reset to zero", it also made me realize the previous 17 episodes were a waste of my time. The "old" Subaru is one of my least favorite types of MCs, and IRL is often that proud, arrogant, friendless asshole who thinks he deserves better but really doesn't. And it took 17 episodes to turn him away from that type of character into someone more tolerable.

I totally disagree when it comes to "lacking something to hold it all together". It's just that the backstory is being slowly revealed and I'm sure on future seasons (once the light novel comes out) everything will make sense in hindsight. The story keeps dropping many, MANY hints throught the show as to what exactly is going on. And the only thing I do agree that's bad about this approach is the fact that Subaru could never just come up to anyone and ask "why are you saying all this? Could you please clarify? I'm not from this country, so I know nothing about its history" for the sake of keeping teasing us with bits and pieces of the mystery, even though quite a bit of such mysteries are common knowledge to literally everyone else.
With that said, I think the whole point of this first season was to make a subversion on the age-old "otaku stuck in another world". The story clearly says that, no, if this actually happened to an Otaku he would be a powerless dipshit. Subaru grows as a person because he actually starts taking matters seriously and maturely instead of being stuck in his otaku fantasies. That's why the light novel was dropped by many fans during that "despair phase". Those are largely otaku, and they couldn't stand a story that tells it straight to them that "YOU'RE NO HERO, YOU'RE JUST A DELUSIONAL, OVER-ENTITLED NERD". It shattered their fantasies and escapisms they normally look for on stories like this.
With that said, I do have one major drawback to what I thought was ultimately a brilliant show: we just don't know anything about Subaru prior to him being transported to Lugunica. While he did become his own character by the end, I thought this prevented him from trully connecting to the audience: he basically doesn't have a past. All we know about him is that he was a loser gaming-fanatic prior to the series and that's it. What about his parents? Online friends? Some sort of trauma that made him this way? There's just nothing at all.
EDIT: Oh, and also, other characters in Steins Gate didn't develop much not due to lack of screentime, but because there was nothing there to be developed to begin with. Read the original VN. All other heroiens aside from Kurisu, Mayuri and maaaaybe Suzuha are virtually useless and they never become more than their estabilished tropes (flashy and fetish cat-girl; quiet, socially awkward and mysterious girl; cross-dresser). Peace.

It's fairly obvious Satella gave him the "Return by Death" power. She's also identical in appearance to Emilia, for reasons I hope get explained later because that can't a coincidence... I hope.
But yeah, his love for Emilia makes no sense. It happens way too quick and he's just too fanatical with it. I think Satella used a spell or something to make Subaru fall in love with Emilia, or tried to make him fall in love with her but it went wrong and he fell for Emilia instead (maybe their identical appearance being related?)

to answer your question Kaneki, she is the "evil witch" similar to voldemort: no one wants to be associated with her. She is the strongest user of dark magic, and responsible for Subaru having his "return by death" powers.
In episode 1 or 2, after Subaru comes back and sees Emilia, he accidentally calls her "satella" because she had used that as her name as a joke (even her familiar says "that is a cruel joke" at the time). It sets off Emilia because at the time of reset, she does not know him, and it causes him to die alone in his second reset.
Just a friendly reminder, Romeo and Juliet is basically about how irrational teenage love is. Neither of the characters have any idea why they love one another, they just do. It was a very good show. It matched all my biases and is very relatable to my life experiences. I can not wait for another season. Like everybody else, it had me going, " just give him a break already, just s small bit of Happiness, my god just give it to him!" lol.

Subaru achieved his goal at the end. He saved Emilia, he swore to Crusch that he would make Emilia ruler. He declared himself Emilias knight, he saved her life. He achieved all it while not letting a single person die (although this wasn’t entirely true as we find out).
But most importantly, he bettered himself and overcame one of his personal flaws. It was an amazing wrap-up. I understand everything else, he didn’t like the characters? Ok thats fine, his opinion.
But I highly disagree about the series having “no point” as he’s said multiple times. Even in the isekai tier list video be did with Joey. Idk why he’s stubborn on this since he’s so fucking wrong on it. I wish he would just admit it already since its just not correct.
There ARE criticism you can make about the series but this is not one of them.
Note that Season 1 was just the beginning.The actual story starts in season 3 coming next year.
The purpose of season 1 are showing the Characters, what they are like, The villians ,world building, and Etc. It shows what the entirety of what the story in the anime is made of and what it offers, cutting in foreshadows of the plot every now and then but in a hardly noticable way.
When Joey and Gigguk asked "what was the point? " they meant that in Plot perspective way, The story in plot perspective is just Subaru dying over and over again just to save the people he loves however there is no explanation as to why it is necessary for this to happen, An answer that is will be shown on season 2 that took 4 years to come.
Season 2 is focused on Plot and
Characterization. Let's just see if this can change he's perspective on This Anime.

@@sentrinovan7099 I’m caught up to the latest WN chapters and I still disagree with this assessment. There was a plot, and Subaru did achieve something. Actually, every arc is technically its own story. They each have a nice little wrap up and leave more to come.
Idk about Joey but Gigguk is definitely wrong on this in my opinion. I would consider episode 18 the end of the “prologue” but its all still very good. Since Subaru has massive character development in season 1 by the end. That isn’t staying stagnant, thats not “nothing happening” or “no point”. That is a point, the main character growing as a character. He’s never made this argument for anything.

The title alone pretty much sums up my feelings on this show.
Also I'm kind of hoping Subaru's obsession with Emilia is justified by some witchcraft or something, since it is pretty damn inexplicable.
Considering how the anime never ONCE brings up his hollow obsession, I seriously doubt it ever will.
Right? I mean I like Emilia, she's so inoffensively sweet that there isn't much you actively dislike. But... that's really all there is to her. Nothing happened between her and him to drive such intense blinding devotion and as Gigguk said it really cheapened the second half of the season. As epic as it was it would have been even more so had his reasons been stronger than "FOR MY WAIFU!" He did also want to save everyone else, like the villagers, but she was the driving force. I feel like if maybe they had built things up between them more it would have felt better, but in the end I couldn't even enjoy their moments because all the bonding that would have made them make sense went to Rem instead! Honestly had he gone through a fraction of the shit he dragged Rem through with Emilia I could have liked those ending scenes more.
Subaru is an Otaku that knows the tropes of "ordinary guy teleported to fantasy land anime" He even exclaims that Emilia is the main girl character.
Subaru is basically trying to fill the role of the Hero, and the subsequent trauma coupled with Emilias kindness uplifts her in Subarus eyes even more. Their "relationship" becomes a pillar that stabilizes his psyche... until it beraks.
He puts her on a pedestal because of this and believes that he deserves her because of his trials. The part where Emilia calls him selfish, and what leads to it, basically breaks the mold of the standard "fantasy land anime" tropes and therefore breaks Subarus delusions of himself and his situation.
These are just my jumbled thoughts, hope they make sense.

You have to be deeply in love to understand what's up with him. It's kind of radical see him being obsessed with her, but she shows kindness in the midst of his depression (as subtly hinted in the first episode). That alone is a good reason to fall for her.
It's an unhealthy behavior to be so much obsessed with her up to that point of hardship, yes. But it's human and is actually happening IRL.

Much of your criticisms seemingly can be answered by: the anime only covered the beginning of a much larger plotline, so lots of thigns remain unexposed, can't be helped.
But, of course, the criticism that "there's no apparent central theme" is valid.
How I see it, however, is that subaru's character development IS the theme. Subaru is the perfect representation of your average escapism anime fan. The way he sees himself, his foundlessly optimistic outlook, the clash with his real flaws and shortcomings, etc., he's absolutely an accurate replica of how most fans of that sort of escapist anime would see themselves and would imagine themselves acting if they got into an isekai situation(I hear that in the light novels, his "otaku" traits come out much more, and that he was a bit washed in the anime to make him more likable, wich is why there's such a clash on the moments he does go full insane). So seeing his character progression, not just the suffering that would come from realistically being pulled into an isekai, but his coming to terms with what kind of person he REALLY is, makes a magnificent theme on it's own right.
As for what dictates what passes as a checkpoint... Guess some yet-unexplained mystical power REALLY wants a certain, very unlikely outcome to happen, and is forcefully using subaru as an agent to make it happen, by literally not letting him die until he makes things turn out the way that entity wants them to.

We need a follow up video talking about season 2 OR for Garnt to read the damn WN/LN. Season 2 the plot of Re:ZERO and Arc 5 & Arc 6 (especially 6) are two of the greatest arcs in fiction IMO. Subaru's speech in Arc 5 as well as all the parallels in both arcs is absolutely fucking incredible. Probably the most slept on series in modern fiction, simply because people are too immature to understand it.
complex character studies and world building turns people off. isekai is usually like a junk food where you can understand the premise and characters after seeing a single episode. re:zero is the opposite meaning it's a non-intellectual repeler. if you wanna think of it as a masterpiece, you HAVE to read the source material because it deepens your understanding of the characters and choices and richens the lore without cutting corners. this series is *enjoyed* and *hated* and both of these emotions are invalid in my eyes. re:zero is the king of isekai and in my eyes the peak of Japanese storytelling.
i hope season 3 will fix some of the issues the anime has and gives people the much needed motivation to pick up the novels

to me re zero is a masterpiece(And yes im allowed that opinion im not some idiot scumbag for finding enjoyment in something you do not). i did find subaru falling in love with emilia realistic enough, ive seen people fall in love with less not to mention he was a neet with very little outside interaction and a teenager in puberty, these things are possible and as far as the plot goes, it does have an undertoned story thats hard to follow at times if you arn't paying attention but it doesnt have to throw it at you to make a story good, whats wrong with it being about surviving and being with the one you love?
When you say it's a masterpiece, I'm pretty sure most people who disagree on that are just sympathetic that out of all the other things that you could be calling a masterpiece, a title that is very grand I mind you, you give it to this, which IMO is good but nowhere near a masterpiece.

Yea he also mentioned that he also does this so that subaru can come out of it a stronger character but you can clearly see in the writing how a large part of the author's penchant for crafting grisly deaths is just for the sake of making tense situations that are shocking and brutal as like gigguk mentioned, the plot structure of the series along with character motivations arent all that cohesive or justified

you like what you like, although it's clear to me how flawed this series is. In my opinion, it's entertaining entirely on a surface level; Plot or character-wise, i couldnt give two shits about these characters and that's one of my problems with the writing. I understand that in season 1 there is no clear or obvious plot that's ever been stated but if you just analyze Subaru's actions and the story then you realize the plot is more like real life. Everyone knows that the plot is just that Subaru wants to be in peace in this new world with all people precious to him staying alive but can't be in peace since he keeps being handed these problems and if he loses someone precious to him he has to reset or else living in peace without his precious ones is pointless to him and not the plot of the story. It's a simple plot but one more logically plausible than something cliche and generic across all animes and the fact that you can enjoy this anime completely while forgetting that this anime never really told you the true plot is something special about this anime and is more of a pro than a con. It truly isn't plotless, as I said before the main plot is that Subaru wants to live in prosperity ONLY if he has all of his precious ones, and its a very fulfilling plot to go along with the unique concepts and mechanics of this story. But that's just season 1, season 2 seems to have a plot directly told to the viewer and this will definitely compensate for the small percentage who think this anime is plotless and that it's a problem.
