  • This is a video from our celebration of the dragon boat festival in rural China 2018.
Although the dragon boat festival got its English name from the dragon boat races, there are no races, or anything related to them, here in my husbands village in rural Qinghai. But in this vide you see some of the dragon boat festival traditions of my family-in-law and the villagers here.
We make green noodles, wrap zongzi, put aiye (Mugwort) behind our ears, and shazao branches above the doors. Apart from the dragon boat races (which I guess are more popular in the cities), making and eating zongzi is one of the most popular dragon boat festival customs in China.
I'm very grateful to have my Chinese family, and through them being able to experience life in rural China, and Chinese traditions and culture.

Smell pretty good food. The rice is sticky but sometimes there are fillings too, which makes more tasty

Dragon boat race is a very southern thing and rarely seen in the central and northern China. Duanwu (the aligned fives, fifth day of the fifth month) Festival became Dragon Boat Festival in English may because Cantonese were the first group that massively entered the English world.

I’m obviously watching older videos. My daughter races competitively in boats like Dragon boats , they are called War canoes here in Canada. There is Dragon boat races in a summer festival here though and she has paddled in those as well. War canoe is an indigenous origin , when they would be at wAr with other tribes or the white man the men would load up the wR canoes and travel fast , there are about 12 or more paddlers in each crew and the Cox who keeps them in rhythm and steers the boat. There is no drummer like in Dragon boats to sound the beat though. Check them out, you’ll see the difference, they are not decorated brightly like the Dragon boats. My daughters crew raced and won three races yesterday. 🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♂️🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♂️🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♂️🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♂️🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♂️🚣🏼‍♀️

Chu Yuan threw himself into the miluo river, not into a lake, the dragon boat festival is in memory of him, manners and customs vary from place to place, i lived in miluo river,It was the manners and customs to throw some sugar baozi into the Miluo River to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. there is also the manners and customs of eating sugar baozi.

Hi Miriam, nice video! It's the first time I hear about the leaves behind the ears. Was there any other food beside the zongzi, potatoes and carrots? Here in Hanzhong, Shaanxi, people would always have lots of different foods with their families, especially hotpot.

Very interesting. I noticed that there was no meat eaten at your gathering, are all the people there vegetarians? Usually at Chinese gatherings meat is very conspicuous.
