Thank you for making and posting this video. I needed to replace my transfer case and the dealer wanted over $6000 to do the work (with parts). It came down to; either sell the truck or fix it myself. After watching your video I was confident I could take it on and swap it out. I found a reman transfer case for $1000 and replaced it with any issues. Seeing you do it gave me the confidence to get after it. You saved me over 5K. Thanks a ton!
Great to hear!
Thanks a ton for this video! I never would have tried it without seeing you do it first. You probably saved me $2000. Made it so easy.
thanks for watching, glad i could help you out
Getting ready to replace the Np 246 in my 2002 suburban. I’ve done a 91 suburban, 89 K5 Blazer and a 59 willys years ago. I’ve watched every RUclips video on this subject I could find and yours is by far the best, thank you.
Thank you, sir. I've done one before, but it's been about 6 years and needed a refresher. I know the camera was a hassle, so thank you for doing it.
Figara, your a young guy joe with and old school work ethic, you learned ur trade well, you don’t stand on ceremony, just take the bull by the horns and tackle it,that’s a big job for one person and not in the best working conditions.keep up the good work, excellent tutorial and filming
Beast mode begins at 14:54...👍🏾.....Excellent instructional vid man...U sir, inspire confidence......With Great Confidence comes Great Doability!😉
yeah that wasnt the easiest part of the job but doable. thanks for watching

The main reason I watch this video was to see exactly how it is you got that transfer case separated from the transmission and out from under the vehicle. That happens to be the only part you didn't show unfortunately. Thank you for the video anyway it was helpful.
unfortunatly my camera went dead at that point but if you look at the part as i reinstalled it was pretty much how i removed it
I did everything just like in this video. I was able you remove/install the TC alone using the help of a ratchet strap between the torsion bars. I also wrapped the torsion bar cross member with bubble wrap so I wouldn’t beat up my new TC.
Excellent video of the noise you hear and the breakdown of everything. It was very helpful to pull the transfer case, I used The Gear Shop 1945, Baltimore Maryland to swap my transfer case. They did an excellent job. My slip yoke had a wear dip in it, so I had to replace the rear slip yoke (otherwise it will cause a leak). Thanks again
Glad it was helpful!
Hey man ;Thank you for the excellent demo. I have an 05 Silverado that I've been restoring the engine is an 5.3 LS and I noe rum super . Your video on the transfer case is great along with your camera shots It;s nice to have people out there whom give help to those whom may never have pulled one off before. God ! I hope to never have to do the mussel work !! Thanks again --
Thanks Joe you are the man! Definitely needed that stubby ratchet to get the top bolt on the transfer case "no if and's or but's about it". Seriously, cannot thank you enough. I did try the petroleum jelly trick but the gasket wouldn't stay on for me, still its worth a shot. I had the case on my chest and stuck the gasket back on before lifting lifting the tc into place. Beast mode!
Joe if you only knew how much I fought with the transfer case in a 2002 Chevy suburban!!!!!!!!! Awesome job man!
Thank you so much for this video!! It did more than helped me, now I can take the transfer case out of my 2007 chevy silverado! Thank you so much man!!
This helped me put alot. I bought a truck that needs a new tcase installed, old one was already out of it, I haven't changed one in so long that I went to put the new one in and it wouldn't fit, I scene in your video you removed the trans crossmember, that's all I gotta do and it will go in. Thanks.
This video was a big help. I have an 2004 Duramax and the transfer case left me on the side of the road last night.
+John Moore dang , that sucks... hope things get better
Thanks I bought a new one and having it installed.
Nice work Joe, Very thorough video..its giving me the courage and motivation to put mine back in.
Thanks buddy you're the only video that shows how to do it on the ground by yourself the way I'm going to have to do it so thank you
glad i could help my friend!!!
Awesome video for such a tight area. Thank you
Nice vid! You took the time to show a lot of details! I'm starting mine now! Changing front u joints too! 208,000 on my 2009 silverado 1500. Changing front and rear dif fluids too.
Glad I could help
One of the best videos for a shade tree mach. like myself thank you
excellent explanation of the process! good work!
great video nice work with the camera. excellent workmanship
Hey Joe, just to follow up on my previous comment. Bit the bullet bought a new re-built case and with your video switched my case out in the driveway, needless to say i have 4wd back with no god forbidden clunking haha!
Wow amazing work 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽
Mine just went out on a 03 SS
Mechanic said $2000 to replace...
Wish I had your skills 😂😂🤷🏾♂️💵💵💵💵
This was really helpful. I couldn't find any information on whether the gasket between the transfer case and transmission takes sealant. This was complicated by the gobs of black RTV I had to clean off the transfer case. After seeing your video (and reading a bunch of opinions in various forums) I decided to not use any ... at first. Difficulty with the keeping the gasket on led me to use a thin film of black RTV on each side (only near the mating surfaces, not on the whole gasket). I considered petroleum jelly (like you used) but I didn't have any (at least not handy). For anyone else looking for this info, various forums say this is a dry mate but for the 4L80/4L85, it's not. I did not see a seal on the transmission output shaft (maybe the spline need to be lubricated).Thanks.
+Robert McGill - BTW, I have a 2004 Suburban LT 2500.
great video, very informative information during disassembly and assembly. thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I used a swivel box end wrench worked perfect for every nut 👍
awesome , thanks for watching
I noticed a leak coming from somewhere on my transfer case on my 04 1500 avalanche. Reading up, there is an issue where the pump wears a hole thru the case. Hoping its not the issue, but with that said...IF I have to do the transfer case swap, about how high off the ground did you jack up the truck? I ask because its important to get it high enough to work under, but there is also an issue when you get things jacked up TOO high and cant get to some of those overhead items. Very detailed video...thanks!
Excellent information Sir! From start to finish! Loved it!
Great job multitasking dude. Well done..
thanks for the video!! couple tips i picked up from it and made my t case change a breeze!
Joe Milwaukie makes a 1/4 drive electric ratchet small and has good power will reach right in and get those nuts
on the mounting bolts i cut a 15mm in half to make it easier ....in installed it to day
I hope I could do mine like that with ease. Thx for the instructional.
Fantastic video!Thank you bro!
Thank you
Mine has 2 vent tubes. One longer & a short. Ik where the short one goes on the transfer case nipple. But where might the longer vent tube go ?
Thank you
Absolutely outstanding!
Glad you think so!
Great camera work thanks
The vent tube for the transmission where goes?
You go boy you muscle that in there!!!
im having trouble slipping the front drive shaft out ......I know it should just slide out but this one aint.............the rubber boot is missing....it turns just fine while in the transfercase but wont slide....any suggestions
Cote Mc couple taps with a punch and mallet usually do the trick
Cant. fucking. wait... Thanks for the video.
you should remove the encoder motor before dropping T-case (just in case it drops}
What transfer case was this.
trans rebuilt 1 month ago trans mount good when in 4 high no clunk from 2ed to 3rd does trans case still turn in 2high
BEST VIDEO EVER!!!! big help. thank you so much for this
good video, but 99 to 02 transfer case wont work in 03 to 07. chevy changed the 4x4 control module on transfer case in 03 but didnt change part number.
Good job Joe! Thanx for the video
I just replaced my transfer care, now my truck won't shift back into park when the motor is on. Also it won't engage into reverse or any of the other gears
Ok so wat 2 wires on the passenger side of the tailshaft the little sensor on the back of th trans case passenger side are they both green bc i know the driverside vss is purple n white and green and black
Great work, do a few more of these and then, please buy yourself a lift. Makes it soooo much easier! Remember to always have fun.
i wish i could have a lift in my shop no space, future shop plans though
@@JoeTheAutoGuy awesome job with the camera and catching every detail. Great editing. Most people miss some steps and viewers get lost. 👍👍👍

Great video Joe. I may have to do this on my Avalanche so I appreciate the effort you made to show all steps.
good video good take photo I am From saudi arabia
So if I dont take the cross member out and lower the transmission I cant bolt this transfer case up? 2000 silverado 4x4 1500
98 tahoe gasket tab faces 12 oclock directly towards floor board
Joe great job, is the AWD 1500 Silverado SS transfer case the same procedure.?
Yes it is , thanks for watching
Omg bro u just muscled that xcase up in there. Dang
Joe, excellent work. Did you buy the transfer case from a dealership? Or parts store?
i bought it remaned from gm dealer , and thanks for watching
My 2000 Tahoe with the NP8 t-case won’t shift out of 4WD. I put a new shift motor in, and it tries to shift but boys down and won’t go any further. I tried manually shifting it by putting a vice grip on the shaft, and I can barely move it but it just springs back to the 4HI position. I cleaned up the ground wires, replaced the t-case shift motor, replaced the buttons on the dash, and can’t seem to get it to work. Any suggestions? Is the transfer case most likely junk? It’s never made any unusual sounds in the past.
Made that shit look easy good brother💪🏾
Have a 1998 Chevy k2500 4x4, when you put the brakes on the it sounds like a clunking noise from the transfer case
Great Video ..I have a 99 Chevy Z71 and it will Not pull at all in 2 wheel drive . I can hear it turning in the transfer case but the rear drive shaft wont turn. when Put it in 4x4 it will drive . It actually quit on me going to work making a whining noise after it came to a stop on the side of the road I put it In 4x4 and drove to work and then back home . Is this a transfer case problem or a transmission problem ?
scottebelew if it moves in four wheel its definetly a transfer case issue and or rear differential issue does the driveshaft spin in two wheel or does it just make a grinding noise in the transfer case
JoeTheAutoGuy No I actually got Under it with it in Drive in 2 wheel drive .. real smart I know But it was not moving and I could hear it Turning or grinding as you say but the drive shaft was not turning.. I was headed to work so I put in high 4 and It started moving .. I could still hear an squealing noise but it was pulling good . even though it would drive in 4X4 it would not go in reverse .
scottebelew Thanks For the reply ....
Joe great video i watched it because my gasket is leaking where the transmission is connected to the transfer case any i idea how long that should take? And what type of fluid and does mine hold 1.8 qts 2001 5.3 Surburban.
what about the guys with a 96 Silverado I'm in the process of a transfer case removal and install another one
honeslty never had to do one of those but im sure the process isnt to different
Great vid, can be tough doing heavy work on your own, know the feeling. :)
Excellent job!
Thank you.
Dawwm i was just waiting on the transercase to fall
So thankful for this video! It was very helpful :)
I got a 2000 silverado 1500 my transfer case is not sliding up on the shaft do u know what could be holding it up from going in
good job
94 K1500 Silverado
I found a 3 pin connector on the harness near the top of the transmission not plugged in cannot find anything to plug it into
isn't there an o-ring needed as well as the gasket required when you install the t case to the transmission extension housing?
Great video ! Did you buy a new transfer case? Or rebuild? I got a 99 GMC Sierra Z71 and I need a transfer case but just want to know if it’s better to get a new one from the dealership or one from auto part? Thank you .
Sorry forgot to tell you great video. Keep up the good work
great job, thanks Joe.
thanks, glad you liked it
Thanks for the knowledge of how to r&r the transfer case. Respect and a salute to you. I recently purchased a 1977 Chevy Ck5 Blazer. The transfer case is a NP203 unit. It is leaking badly and I am afraid to drive it. I will have it towed to a shop that can r&r it. How much damage will it cause to start it up in neutral, then put it in 4H to back it out if the garage, then back and forth a few times to get things aligned with the tow truck? Any advice on the NP 203 units ?
+Mike Fitzryk cant say i know to much about the older models but starting the vehicle with the transfer case in neutral could work but the transfer case must be shifted with the vehicle in neutral as well or grinding will happen with no engagement. slow movement of the transfer case will not cause any damage with it low on fluid but if the primary gears are gone then it could be damaged already and not allow 4h to engage.
Thanks, I am going to try to crawl underneath with a roll of paper towels, wipe the oil off and try to see where it is leaking from. Thanks for the advice
Nice job. Great video Joe.
Hi Joe, I have an 2000 Tahoe. The transfer case is a NP 246. Is it the same procedure when changing it you think?
I have a loud clunking noice when I shift into gear D/R. When I was under the car and tried to turn the driveshafts ther is a little bit of play on both front and rear and it makes a clunking noice. Please excuse my spelling as I'm from and live in Sweden. Best regards
Do you have to grease the splines between trans and t-case?
I put gasket sealant on my gasket and you did not. Know i am wondering if that is what i did wrong because it leaks now. Does this type of gasket not need it?
Just completed the same job today watching your video thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.... what type of transfer case fluid did you use?? Thank you. My vehicle is a 2004 suburban.
Gm recommends auto trak 2 fluid for your model
Glad I could help!!
Thank you 🙂🙏🙏
Hi. I have a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. On several occasions the rear tires do not feel like they are gripping (feels like when you run over the interstate onto the roadside with the ridges to wake you up). Gas pedal vibrates as well. Only happens once in a while. One garage has said it is a bad transfer case- $2,500 + to fix. with over 200,000 miles and not a daily driver don't want to put that much into it. Any suggestions/ideas what it else it might be or do you agree with them? Need to get a couple of ideas before head out to ask questions at various shops. Many thanks.
Karen Overcash being a 99 its your call truly that milage you will never see your repair money back IMO if the transfer case is slipping out of gear HI or LO range main drive it will vibrate like crazy , but something in your t case or rear diff is most likley the cause. i have replaced quite a few spider gear assemblies in gm rear ends tht cause a no movement issue and or vibration but its hard to narrow down through text. does it happen at only certain speeds?
So umm what happened to the part of the video where you actually pulled it out???
I just need to replace the back housing faceing/going to the drive shaft due to the fill plug being stripped and needing to change out the fluid/check it. Can you do it with out dropping the whole transfer case? Looks like i would just have to drain it and pull the drive shaft back then remove and replace the housing?
Omar Fernandez could always just retap it and flush out the shavings if its stripped.
It's a 2010 an it has the button to engage the 4x4. Thanks for the info. I put gear oil in it so will I have to put the blue fluid in an drive it then drain an refill to wash it out??
sdflyer1 i would let it drain overnight , then fill it up run it for about 15 miles and drain and fill again
do you to lubricant between transfer case and transmission ?
thanks for watching, wasnt to bad on this one
CLIPS!? Anybody know where to get the clips that hold the 4x4 shifter handle to the connecting rod that conects to the transfer unit... i been looking everywhere and cant find jacksquat
Good information thanks.
watup joe i got a parts vehicle newly trans,5.3 motor great 373 rear and a great t case ,how much will u charge to remove trans for me???????????
No salt rust on frame??
at 11:30 into the video. why did you jack the transmission back up?
Hi Joe, I'm about to install a transfer case on a 2009 Sierra 2500 (MP 1626). Does the computer get everything sorted out as far what position the transfer case is in when installed..2 Hi, 4 Hi 4 Lo... or do I need to manually shift? Also, do I need to be concerned with getting front or rear drive shafts in a certain spline alignment? It looks like you just pushed parts together without regard to orientation and everything turned out well. Thank you.
No specific spline alignment just put them on , with the vehicle running and in neutral (not park) shift from 2hi to 4lo, then 4lo to 4hi and back to 2hi and you will be all set
replaceing the oil pan in the 4x4 models is a pain any one here ever done it?
i have a 99 silverado with a manual shift transfer and im ready to let her go
good job Joe..! 😀
thanks man , more coming
is this the same process on the 2500?
Did changing the transfer case gasket from the gapped one to the solid one change anything?, my LPS has the new one you put on but my old one is the one with the holes in it, just want to make sure it’s fine to use
Im wondering the same
I got a bad bearing I think.. it grinds at low speed and sometimes catches and clunks. it was about a quart low on fluid because it lost it through the yolk that attached to the main shaft.. I'm about 90miles from my destination.. how screwed am I?
+Robert paulson hard to say how much damage is in there but rebuild kits are available
did you the reprogrammed when replacing it?
Hi Joe thanks for the great vid. Does the transmission and the transfer case share the same oil??
I bought a used Silverado 1500 and I was doing a fluid change on the transfer case and it looks like someone put gear oil in it. My book says it takes dexron VI just like the trans. The fluid in the trans doesn't look black or dirty like gear oil is in it but just wanted to hear what you had to say about this. Thank you :)
sdflyer1 what year silverado , do you have a floor shifter or the button shift if its the auto shift button it needs the special fluid from gm forget what its called but its blue in color and the parts guys will know it off the top of their heads. if its the floor shift than it just takes dexron 6 . some people use the ams oil in the t case and it can be darker in color and seems a little thicker
