Mellowlink is the perfect spinoff of Votoms. It melds very well with the world established in Votoms, but Mellowlink isn't just a copy of Churico and the series is built around a unique premise. Too many spinoffs and sequels are just retreads of what the original already did.
This really was the peak period of American action movies influence on anime/manga. Shades of Commando, First Blood, Predator, and so many more. Which reminds me, Desert Punk (2004) also does the "SF action hero who wins through planning and guile" quite well.
I remember watching a review of this OVA a long time ago that described the animation as "Mechanical pron" because of the immense detail they went into with his gun and its functionality. I just love that sort of stuff.
I think the obscureness depends. Western mecha fans who know about it probably know it as the other show besides Macross where a bunch of Battletech designs originate from.
Finally! Only found the show last year but was very happy with it and made and AMV. I should check out the rest of the actual series however; Mellowlink is where I started
Once thing I'm disappointed of is that mellow didn't go after the mastermind that lead to decimation of his squad. But hey, how is he able to do it if the mastermind is off-planet? And at least he took out almost all responsible for the scandal so, there's that
Would you ever consider doing a Retrospective of Mad Bull 34? Its pure 80s/90s grindhouse anime and a perfect example of that "be the American thay Japanese think you are" meme. Failing that, Aura Battler Dunbine
For me, Mellowlink Armor Hunter is even better than the OG VOTOMS, the premise itself of a armor hunter is already unique enough to sets it as it's own thing, is also well done for the most part, most of his tactics feels real for the circumstances, the only other show I saw doing a similar stuff was the glorious 08 MS team in two episodes which Shiro went down to hunt MBS in a similar manner.
There are actually two other Votoms stories that don't follow Chirico. There's "Case : Irvine" and "Votoms Finder" which are both pretty excellent. Irvine is one of the later main universe titles to come out but didn't use CGI which is cool to see. Finder is an alternative universe but also entirely worth a watch.
Did this series ever get a Blu Ray release? Also...this reminds me of the recent Ninja Kaumi, but shows how to do a revenge focused lead better...maybe having the fights not devolve into bland CGI ninja's helped to.
@@ZannacrossG1 Nah I think the collection the above poster is talking about is Japan-only for now, I saw it on a Japanese website. There was a VOTOMS collection released in English-speaking countries but it didn't include Mellowlink, and all the older entries were on DVD, though it looks like that's also true in Japan. I'd post a link, but comments with links get auto-deleted.

the power of the pile bunker
unironically one of my favorite mech series. I've struggled to get into Votoms proper yet Mellowlink is my jam
Votoms starts off slow, but it is a great series. IMO, the epitome of Real Robot mecha.
I watched this first too, votoms has peaks and troughs, but the highs are high

Desert Punk has one of my favorite endings. That I will not discuss because it's a great twist.
The bloody face tiger swipe is the equivalent to the police putting their gloves on, you know shit's gonna get real!!!

I just love that sort of stuff.
Kenny Lauderdale's video! I remember it, good times.
Mellowlink is still the only piece of VOTOMS I've watched thus far
Ahh finally, at the bottom of the list where I belong
The next retrospective you should do is _Crusher Joe._ It's obscure, but a really good OVA series.
the movie by Yasuhiko has some of the best animation i've ever seen

Votoms is great. IMO, one of the best series in the post-Gundam mecha boom of the 80s.
I love Arity Mellowlink! This show is criminally underrated!
This looks like a fine addition to the man with big gun shows.
A guy bare-handing a fucking PILE BUNKER is insane.
For some reason I've gotten several clips of this show suggested to me on RUclips. I really enjoyed watching them!
Mellow don’t care about the high ground 👌
This is one of my top OVAs to just watch on a whim, there's little filler and tons of action.
yess. I really enjoyed this seeries. Glad you made a vid on it.
I never managed to get into Votoms but this looks like an easier entry point into the series. I might check this out.
Merrowrink & Rurucy make an awesome 80's anime couple. Chef's kiss tier representation of the action theme in that era.
He could have communicated with the other sniper girl beforehand and kept her alive, they can be a good team

whoa, deep Ryosuke Takahashi cut
This show looks so cool. It reminds of me of Trigun without the super powers.

The entire Kazuo Koike universe is that. Saturday Rika, Duet, Crying Freeman, Brothers, Mad Bull 34 and 2000.
Mellow reminds me of Crinn from Dougram with that poncho.
votoms mentioned video upvoted
Solid Snake
Ah the Votoms spinoff, nice

Never knew of this show looks I need to check it out
If you like Votoms, have you ever heard of Blue Comet SPT Layzner?
どちらもアニメアールの谷口守泰さんがキャラクターデザインを務め、
メカ作監もアールの吉田徹さんです。

A mecha to surpass metal gear......
This needs a toy set.
Mellowlink, if Rambo was in a mech universe
Metal Gear of mecha anime.
You should check out Gundam Thunderbolt
Hey can you please do Fafner Dead Agressor 404 Retrospective video please ?

I think it just got a Blu-ray release in Japan a year or two ago, as the film masters were luckily found fairly recently.
There was a big rerelease of the entirety of VOTOMS called the Perfect Soldier Collection but it was unholy expensive.
@@JustAnotherPest I have that, I think, and it seems to have everything besides this...was it suppose to be in it?

What if Fox crushed his head instead of torso? 🤦♂️
Aw man! If you got an original Xbox PLEASE PLEASE play Metal Wolf Chaos if you want just the most insane parody of America ever written!
So uhhh....when's that video for the second season of Rayearth?
Retcon_404 I have a question what are your thoughts on tekkaman blade?
I hope you will cover the Macross: Do You Remember Love Movie. It just had its 40th anniversery
Plot armored hunter.
Mellowlink is such a bad ass mecha protagnist that he dosent even use a mecha in his show.
My new woke remake: Armored Trooper BOTTOMs. The proper nouns won't confuse you, but the pronouns will!
Id watch it
Sounds great, nothing really wrong with pronouns, think I'd watch it.
@@martyden9006 I don't have a problem with pronouns but I don't like having to guess them!
@ThugShakers4Christ Zero need to guess them actually, just call it like you see it unless they ask you to call them otherwise..... simple.
