Tantal does have a city, but this theme is actually what plays out in the wide open area surrounding the city, which is a beautiful yet frozen wasteland.

One of my dreams is that monolith would make a xenoblade live concert across all the games. It'd be so beautiful and diverse, and truly a wonderful memory I would cherish if this were to ever happen. Hearing this live along with all the other wonderful themes would be sublime.

I would love that too but I don't think would be very profitable as these pieces requires a large amount of musicians and although not superstars to require to pay a person a huge amount lots of musicians plus lots of technical staff will require that the ticket to be very expensive in order to pay all that people and also to be on profit.

What you just listened to was the Tantal day theme for the overworld area of Tantal. The area is a massive frozen wasteland filled with monsters, ruins, and very few people. It’s by far one of my favorite overworld themes in XC2 along with its companion night theme. There is a city in the region, but it is very old and run down and has its own theme, Ever Come to an End and Shadows of the Lowlands, which are the day and night themes respectively and are two of the most haunting pieces of music I’ve heard

By far one of the best tracks in XC2. Beaten only by Counterattack!, Roaming the wastes, and Drifting Soul. This track honestly encapsulates the frozen tundra of Tantal, with the chimes. It’s super chilling…. But that’s what it’s supposed to be, and it’s fantastic.

I’ve spent so many hours in this area killing off King Ken, and it’s an amazing track once it gets going. I love how all three xenoblade OST’s don’t necessarily stomp on the other in terms of musical quality. They all pay homage to one another. Especially with the reboot with DE. All three now tie into one another with their music.

You mentioned XC's blending and juxtaposition of natural and synthetic sounds - that's always been one of my biggest loves about this series' OSTs (and music in general). It's such FASCINATING, versatile symbology for opposition or, conversely, harmony. I first fell in love with the style thanks to Ecstatic Waters by Steven Bryant. It's not a game OST, but a live orchestral performance paired with prerecorded synthetics. I played it in a summer band camp one year and instantly fell in love, haha.
Your takes on XC music are always my favorites; even though I've spent thousands of hours in the games, your thoughts and analysis always give me pause to contemplate new meanings. 🎶🤔

  • @Tom-101

2:30 you mentioned forward momentum and busy-ness/uncertainty which is very interesting as an important aspect of this area relating to the main story means the party only has a few hours to achieve a certain goal here (not going to drop spoilers but it would make a lot more sense if I did), so I feel the music attempts to combine this urgency with the breathtaking frosty and historied landscape.

Super late, but I would describe tantal as a place of abundant uncertainty, fear and very little hope for the people who live there. The residents of tantal are descendants of thriving ancestors whose home was destroyed from war. They migrated to tantal but due to the harsh environment the economy is low and many people struggle. The song is a cry of past ancestors and the sadness of their descendants due to war, famine and isolation. They are a fallen civilization that was once one of the most highly regarded and respected who fell due to no fault of their own. A dying civilization on its last legs freezing to death.

Other than that Tantal is both the name of this place, the name of a Kingdom and the name of a living being iirc. The sound always gave me some vibe of chill and danger. Like something cruel and bad is happening there we can't really see and that you shouldn't stay there.

The music of the Xenoblade games, especially Xenoblade 2, is pretty fantastic. The songs that play when you're just walking around a city can sometimes feel like they belong in the final level or during the final boss. One example is the song "Our Eternal Land" which is the song that plays whenever you're in a specific city in the game. I'd highly suggest giving it a listen, it's one of my favorites.

It's funny, the music contrasts with the frozen nature of the landscape; I guess it adds to the urgency of doing something or you're going to die in the cold. People are not moving around, it's frozen, and you're trying like hell to reach the city because it's cold as hell and it's urgent.

I don't know if it's all my experience with Mega Man games but the immediate image this track gives me (especially thanks to the effects and certain instrument parts) even without looking at the game is ice, a snow storm or the start of one. As for the pace, you're right, it's very forward moving but it feels like someone is performing a vigorous dance or a duel of sorts.

Xenoblade music, ohhhh boyyyy, hope to see more
(Tantal is interesting because the kingdom has made up this lie of being connected to a praised hero from long ago, so the themes mixture of sad/coldness and almost grand feeling works really well
It also feels cold because the area is frozen over and cold due to the dying titan, and how secluded the people have become not wanting any lies to come out, their titan (giant creatures that act as land) can dive deep into the world's sea (the cloud sea) away from the world)

  • @turtlebug8552

Tantal is the beautiful, but dangerous isolationist kingdom inside the titan Genbu. There is only one city, floating high about the snowfield this theme plays in. The kingdom is in decline mostly due to food shortages and the kings refusal to get help from other nations. Outside the safety of the main city is nothing but a frozen wasteland, full of ruins, ravines, and high level monsters. In some of the higher areas (like the cliff you climb down to get to the fields) you have to watch out for slippery ice, and crumbling floor. It's one of the most beautiful areas in xenoblade 2, and one of my personal favorites.

  • @whisped8145
    @whisped8145 Год назад

Your interpretation here of "city and lively" is very interesting, for Tantal is a wide snowy field littered with ancient ruins and absurdly strong wild monsters. You used the words "diminishing crunch" at the beginning, and that's a great way to describe snow, and business you can at least find in the snowstorm. I do prefer the night-version of this track though.
It is very fun to compare the overworld themes with their night-versions, and look for the Leitmotiv hidden in all them and where they are hidden.

Xenoblade 2 not only tries to set big gameplay and story contrasts between areas in the game, but tries to represent that through the music. For context, the main two areas before this are Leftheria, a quiet archipelago where the main character was raised. The wildlife is dangerous if provoked, but otherwise it's a peaceful and straightforward trek toward Rex's hometown, the only place in the game not touched by war and the war economy. This is the last truly peaceful moment in the game. After this is the Indoline Praetorium, a holy place and the center of Alrest's culture, being one of the few areas to still have untarnished artifacts from a world before the Aegis War.
And then you get to Tantal. Like Indol, it's an old culture that is traceable to a time before the Aegis War, but it was still a war site. There is one castle town where the king lives, but the ruins of fallen cities and kingdoms are strewn all over the entire area. There is a stretch towards the end just scorched back from battles. And to make things worse, the entire place is a hostile climate freezing over. People really aren't supposed to live here. Because of this, you can't really "walk" through Tantal. It's a series of ice bridges and calculated drops that are just barely not far enough to kill you. And to make matters worse, the party is on a timer when you first get here. Everything that made Leftheria comfortable and peaceful has been reversed and I think the music is so good at nailing that.

I want people to remember how even hard the NORMAL BATTLE THEME goes in this game. Yeah Monolithsoft pulls out all the stops for their games and Tantal is one of my favourites from XC2. Specifically the day theme when that beat drops. It feels like you just gotta get going y'know? It hypes you up which you should do since the place is freezing and well, story progression. My favorite ice area theme ever.
The Weight of Life from 3 and Unfinished Battle from 1 are my favorite Xenoblade soundtracks though. Give it a listen for those who haven't and listen to Engage the Enemy and Counterattack before hearing The Weight of Life. You'll thank me later.

For Xenoblade Chronicles 2 the Gormott night theme always has a special place in my heart somehow~ the day theme is nice but drawn in more by the night theme. Xenogears' Light of the Underworld is interesting, Omen as well, and also The one who bears Fangs at God are some of my favourites in Xenogears, I feel like I'm really drawn in by Yasunori Mitsuda. Now that I think on in Yasunori-san's, Uematsu-san's and Motoi Sakuraba-san's music were the ones that form the core of the music I listen to growing up and playing games with their compositions, they each have songs that draw you in, open up your mind to extrapolate the scene and its ambience through music and tell a story with music. If you do ever decide to listen or react to any of their songs, I do hope you will enjoy them as much as I do :) thank you for all your hard work and love your videos Marco

There is other versio called Tantal/night referencing the coming death of "tantal". Meaning the reason it is all ICE around there.
I love the Cover by: ruclips.net/video/QaeZdzL1cKg/видео.html
It is just masterpiece, have it on my spotify playlist and have listened to it thousands of times.
This cover also fits better to what happens to it when you as a "player" leave the place called "tantal".

while i doubt the symbolism is intentional, the choir being artificial/generated is interesting here.

The kingdom of tantal is dying. Its icy lands barely support crops, it has been backed into a corner by a stronger nation into giving what little supplies it has as tribute. Due to the isolationist policy of its monarchy, all trade is done in black markets, that, despite still being unsanctioned, are done directly in front of the eyes of the government, without opposition, as things are so dire that any persecution would just lead to more death and poverty. The theme of the capital city, Theosoir, is a soft, choral lamentation, begging for salvation.
Despite this, the monarchy keeps a facade of strength. They bare themselves as blessed, bearing the blood of an ancient hero; blessing the people of tantal by extension, giving them hope that even in this dire, starved state, Tantals people will persevere.
Theosoirs theme, "Ever Come To An End" states:
"Pride keeps us strong today, glory will be with us.
Now the time has come, to fight and seize the day.
When will our prayers be heard, high up in the sky above?
Soon fate will show us, the place where we belong."
The choir is a strong, even stubborn aspect of Tantals overworld theme. Though at times it wavers, it stays resolute throughout the track. I don't think it would be stretch to say it represents the pride of Tantals people.
But the thing is, as we learn in the games story, the King is lying. The royal family was not descended from the hero at all. The King has no divine right, nor does his people. Its all fake, a secret kept for generations to provide an illusion of stability for the kingdoms people, because they have to, Its all they have left.
If the artificial choir does really reflect this, then it paints the otherwise proud and resolute song in a tragic light.
A false sense of proud security, surrounded on all sides by blizzard and famine.

I'm admittedly a bit mixed on Tantal's daytime music, which we hear here. At first it blew me away, I thought it was really impressive and strong. It's a snowy, mountainous area, and winter themes tend to not be this intense. I considered it one of the best winter-themes around at one point.
But then, you spend a LOT of time in this place, it's quite a large area and way more difficult to navigate than most anywhere else in this game, which further increases the time you spend traversing this place.
And to be honest? Hot take incoming, perhaps, I've found it to get really tiresome after enough time. It's not boring, but eventually I was rather sick of hearing it. I think some more of XC2's major areas have that problem, but I feel it the most with Tantal's. I went from loving it to kinda hating it, which I'm not sure I've experienced like this with any video game music track before or since.
Conversely, I've developed a bit more appreciation for the more low-key nighttime version. I find it easier to listen to now.

I think that’s the inherent problem with looped tracks in general!

    • @laggalot1012
      @laggalot1012 2 года назад

@@MarcoMeatball Maybe, I do agree to an extent, but there are plenty of looping tracks out there, area tracks included, where I hardly get tired of them at all, even after listening to them for extended periods of time. The way you describe Tantal's track in the video, though, I think a lot of the points you bring up and descriptors you use regarding the energy and pace of this track touch on why it burns out for me so much.
And to be fair, I also kinda got lost in this place for a while on my first playthrough, so maybe that frustration rubbed off on it a bit for me as well...

11:19 you are so on the nose about the themes of xenoblade being about the machine vs. Nature its not even funny 😭
XBC2 has these sentient weapons called blades which have this very futuristic deisgn to them, along with various machine enemies you encounter throughout.
XBC1's central plot revolves around Humans fighting against an endless invasion of machines called mechon, and the two continents, the Bionis and the Mechonis are literally a living being and an artifical being locked in an eternal battle.

Shame you didn't also listen to the night time version of the overworld track as you may have better guessed the landmass the player is walking on. Thinking of all the overworld tracks the day/night for Tantal is one of the better tracks though personally out of all the 4 Xenoblade games I think Xc2 has the 2nd worst overworld tracks.
