You are quite spot on as always with this analysis - the general context to this track is witnessing an attempt to bring someone back from the dead backfire, and that someone is the mother of the player character, with said character begging for the antagonist to stop. Alas, the antagonist goes forward with it, fully convinced this will bring her back to life and his unrequited love will this time be rewarded. Yet all that happens is that a malformed, monstrous beast emerges, a fusion of both the deceased and the performer of the ritual - and now the player character and their friends have to put this beast out of its misery.

It’s always terrifying to hear a character or someone say: “No Matter The Cost.” The meaning has been kind of softened with time, but if someone means it, TRULY, means it… then they have basically become something driven by a single desire. It’s all about the GOAL, consequences and outcomes be damned. Logic has no place, reason has long since been abandoned, the goal MUST be accomplished.

I actually managed to jank it and win in 3 turns without losing anyone and without having to take anyone out besides the Simp Dragon. HOWEVER, I will admit that I spent just over half an hour -jamming out to the sweet Fire Emblem music- trying to look at the map from every angle, strategize, and figure out how I could pull it off before I actually started the battle 😆. 20 years of being a diehard Fire Emblem fan have made it nearly impossible for me to commit to a deployment and play a map without carefully checking out absolutely everything first, and when I looked at the abilities of this particular boss and the state of my units, I realized the only shot I had at achieving a perfect victory without having to sacrifice anyone was to throw myself at the enemy like a lunatic and take him out before he could do too much damage. So that's what I did. I ignored conventional Fire Emblem wisdom, left myself wide open, and committed everything to killing this monster as quickly as possible. With two lucky critical hits, I _just_ managed it. And yeah, while it wasn't exactly a long battle for me, it was certainly an intense one.

The great thing about Fire Emblem: Three Houses is that as you come to the end of most of the possible story routes is that the battles become extremely personal. Many games, JRPGs in particular, your last fight is often with some dark god or nameless evil. With one exception, this game always ends with you facing off against someone you know and have some established feelings for. You may love them. You may hate them. You may harbor a bit of both for them. But ultimately for the fate of the world it's you or them. For this song and the context of the battle surrounding it, it's one of the most emotionally turbulent spots in the whole game (and it was optional DLC no less).

This song is interesting because it caps off the dlc for Three Houses with a series of events that are ultimately non-canon in terms of the ultimate story being told in the main game.
With these events leading to a corruption of beliefs based in love unrequited and lost to another utilizing a character extremely close to, and very important to a great multiple of vital characters in the main cast

    • @ariwl1
      @ariwl1 2 года назад +12

What's so wild about Three Houses is that after a certain point in the game pretty much everything is a plausible what-if. Extending it even to the side-game Three Hopes everything there feels like something that could have actually happened as well had things gone just a little differently. I wouldn't say the writing is absolutely airtight or anything but you can tell that the developers really cared about this world and the people they put in it.

One theory I really like about this song and one that gets more chills-down-your-spinepotential is that those sounds at the beginning are Sitris (name of the mother of Byleth) cries of pain bc her dead body is forced into a ritual from someone trying to bring her back to life in hope of his love not getting rejected again. It's been months, but I want to correct this comment, in case somebody comes upon it in the future. The character in question *did not* resurrect her out of a wish to be with her. He was completely obsessed with her, but accepted that she loved another man. He simply wanted to see her alive and happy again.
That is not a justification of that characters actions, but this nuance makes the situation a lot more interesting to ponder and unique in popular fiction.
      Edit: Fixed typos

i am SO happy to see your reaction to this song. it’s one of my favorites from three houses; i think about it a lot. it’s very clearly trying to create something like a funeral march, because this is a theme that plays for a death of someone dear to the characters fighting the boss-a loss of someone deeply in love and deeply misguided, and for byleth, our main character, this is likely incredibly horrific and traumatic, because that misguided man fused with their mother in an effort to resurrect her.
this fight is something that shouldn’t have happened. it did not need to happen. the hubris and selfishness of one man manifested into a monster. in a weird way, he wanted this. but *at what cost?*

  • @silverethereal2715
    @silverethereal2715 2 года назад +7

A theory I love is while the beginning and the cries that sound of pain is the Byleth’s mother sitri, the melody that has this almost angry build up to a triumphant blast of hope is the building of Byleth’s slight emotions. Since while this what-if takes place near when Byleth should start expressing emotions. It still should be as prevalent, leading it to be this slow thing that builds up than an explosive at once rage. The title also reflects the main antagonist and Byleth’s/main cast views quite well.
“I must bring her back no matter the cost!” vs “We must end this no matter the cost”
Or my personal favorite for Byleth. “I’ll leave mother to rest. No matter the cost.”

Glad to see you comment on one of my favorite songs in Three Houses! The sheer execution of having to slay down the Umbral Beast after Aelfric's botched attempt of reviving Sitri (main protagonist/Byleth's mother) is just so beautiful and tragically captured in this song. It REALLY conveys the feel that no matter the cost and the consequences, one will always be driven by their goals, no matter how immoral they may be able to accomplish them regardless of the actions will be along with the consequences and repercussions that will follow. Aelfric's obsession with the revival of Sitri shows how he'll do anything in his power to bring her back even when Rhea said how it cannot bring back the souls of the ones who left this mortal coil. This song just captures that feeling that in the end, someone will do anything in their power to bring their goals to light, no matter the cost and no matter the consequences that will follow for Aelfric.

Lore-wise, this is one of the most messed up songs in the game. Without giving away too many details on names for the ones who haven't played the game yet:
God Shattering Star: An ancient, literal god-slaying, evil monarch of the past has risen from the dead with the ancestors of the social class system and needs to be sent back to the dead.
The Apex of the World: you have fought with the house leader to achieve their goals and now their archnemesis is in front of them as a last obstacle to finally have control of the world and remodel it with their ideals.
A Funeral of Flowers: you have achieved almost full victory, but that same victory took its toll on your biggest benefactor and now you have to put them out of their misery, hoping the bonds formed with them manage to save their life after a grueling battle.
At What Cost?: The villain has been stopped in their tracks from completing a blood ritual in order to resurrect a lost love that will kill the friends you just made and earned their trust, so the villain, in order to achieve their goals, offers itself in the ritual and the ritual goes horribly wrong transforming it into a monster you need to put down.
So, in that sense, I think it was intentional they had the vocals sound like they're not natural. Because this boss was hellbent on fulfilling the goal in mind, it was ready to jump above the laws of nature and magic. And also the way the track stops and starts again instead of looping like every other final boss track sounds like another intentional choice

Fire emblem is definitely one of my favorite games I’ve ever played, and you were spot on about the tone, for a little background you, the main character, is brought into a famous academy to train one of three houses (the name of the game) from each of the three main nations on the continent, about combat and also lead them in battle occasionally, you also get the opportunity to mentor and get to know students from other houses. however through events in the story there is a civil war, and unless you play the game in a very specific way you will face other students from the academy on the battlefield and killing them, which always plays out in a very tragic way. Anyway great reaction and analysis man, what’s the best way to recommend songs to you to react to?

Since you’ve listened to all of the final map themes for Three Houses, I highly recommend the soundtrack as a whole. It’s a beautiful soundtrack and has a few songs, mainly Shambhala, which caught me off guard but easily some of my favorites of the OST.
I also recommend the soundtracks for Fire Emblem: Awakening, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. Without Awakening, the series may have faded into obscurity and it has one of the single most emotional songs I’ve heard in a game (seriously, “Don’t Speak Her Name” is super depressing *especially* in context). Shadows of Valentia is a remake of one of the first FE games, but they to the 10-50 second song loops of the NES version and made some of the best FE battle map themes. Three Hopes is an alternate timeline of Three Houses where the main character of the latter ends up being a major antagonist. The soundtrack has a lot of rock remixes of Three Houses songs to reflect the more action-oriented gameplay.

So i'm not sure at 100% of everything ima say since i have played FE 3H but not the DLC i've only watch people play it (feel free to correct me or add up stuff) but here's the context for some people :
Basicly there is that one priest that is "kinda" friendly ( but he's very suspicious when you see him) and he was basicly taking charge of people of variable backgrounds that i'm not going into cause then this text would be more like an essay. But those people (especially the four playable characters we get from this DLC) have something very specials that this guy need and that is there blood.
And so in the DLC around the end he capture all 4 of them and extract their bloods through a ritual to fill a Calice with their bloods. We ( we, as in the main protagonist and our groups) try to stop him but he manage to extract enough blood and to run away.
We then find him in a cathedral where here lays a very preserved body (like almost as if it was just sleeping) of the main protagonist mother, who is dead since she gave birth to the MP ( MP age ain't confirmed i think but it's around 20yo prob).
He tried to revive her using the Calice because he apparently heard/read something about it being able to ressurect maybe ( don't remember ).
But it goes terribly wrong and he turns into a Huge monster (like dragon size if not more) and you fight it inside the cathedral. And since the fight is a "boss battle" where there is pretty much only one ennemy the boss is made to be hard AF and you have to pray to rngesus to land crit/dodge or stuffs because you have very limited ressources against a boss that can do aoe, teleport randomly all your unit and summon clone of himself that heals the boss ( the clone are his human forms).
So why did he do all that? Just to revive our dead mother cause he loved her. and no matter what was the cost he wanted to bring her back ( tho it didn't work and he dies the End).

When you first meet him, Aelfric comes off as a kind man. A monk of the church, he stumbles upon these underground students and occupants. He works to to give these people a proper education and eventually return to the surface.
But, when given the opportunity to get back his true desire, what is he willing to do?
-Throw away all he worked for
-Personally sacrifice the lives of the students he guided
-Harm the child of his beloved

Seeing Marco react to this song…a song of such desperation and yet hope is always a good time! Really impressive that he could tell that the vocalists were MIDI files and not real tho I can never tell the difference😅

Spoilers beneath the cut, but since a majority of people watching either haven't played FE3H, never will, or have already played it, I'll go ahead and explain the situation in simplified terms.
During this fight you are fighting this dragon-like monstrosity made of flesh and bone, without skin, but this monstrosity was once a man. He didn't choose to go down the path of becoming this monstrosity, no he had no clue he would become one, his goal was to bring someone back from the dead using a method which had already resulted in the same exact outcome. But he doesn't know that because the incident was covered up, so in order to bring his dead crush back from the dead he ends up choosing drastic options which lead him down this path. This is only the DLC, not in the main game, so in the main game he realized that it wasn't worth the cost, but in the DLC, he believes a blood ritual which would probably kill multiple teenagers is worth the cost of bringing his unrequited love back from the dead.

Overall the dlc was a great what if scenario. I kinda feel bad for the guy though, but at least in the canon story he was just happy that the woman he loves is happy even though they didn't end up together.

To this day my BIGGEST complaint about Cindered Shadows is that Jeralt (Byleths/the Avatars father, should have been involved given that this boss is made from a misguided attempt at reviving his wife's body by someone who was once a family friend

Considering the previous use of actual singers in this game, I thought the midi vocals were chosen intentionally, like for an uncanny valley effect or something. I mean, the boss pretty disturbing in my opinion, I think the midi vocals sort of add to that

You need to listen THE APEX OF THE WORLD which is based by FETH main theme. This song is such a goat that represents the real finale of the game. When I first heard it, I got.....mind blown. You don't need to make this as a video. Please just hear it.

I know you like reacting to game music, but have you ever listened to any of the stuff from Two Steps From Hell? They do a bunch of music that's used in movies and stuff and a lot of it really falls in line with the whole 'modern take on classic/operatic' that's the case in fire emblem. You've probably even heard some of the stuff without knowing, and I don't think you wouldn't enjoy it.

Embarrassing admittance, I just realized I've never heard this song because I only played the stage this was in once, and it was muted. I was wondering why I had no memory of this one... Well, to the playlist it goes! As per usual FE:3H is full of masterpieces, can't wait to hear Engage's music!
Day 7 of begging Marco to listen to some PSO2 Boss OSTs, still highly recommending the story version of Sodam!
Two days ago I saw the Kirby reaction and I was like 'oh I don't really have much to say, I'll wait for the afternoon upload.' and then there was no afternoon upload... And I fell asleep before I remembered... And then no videos yesterday... I will most likely repeat this mistake, lol.

Seconded on the PSO2 requests, Dark to Light, DINATIS Q VECIS, Divide Quest Stage 5 ~ Vs. Grave Exegul are definitely on the top of my request list.
Maybe for something a bit heavier on the overarching choral themes, La l'inno per il IDOLA or MIERNO IDOLA would be great.

It is in my humble opinion one of the best operatic pieces used as a video game boss. Especially since the vocals hit you by surprise. It is rare for fire emblem to have vocals be at the forefront as they are with “God Shattering Star” in a fire emblem game so they pack an extra punch.
