This video is great inspiration, as are all of your videos! I’m a beginner sewer, and I’m making a shirt based on the shirred dress. I just want to mention for other beginners that one step skipped over in this video that I learned the hard way is that when working with elastic thread, you only use it in the bobbin, and you use regular thread up top. It was only after a lot of snapped elastic thread that I realized this, and looked it up elsewhere.
I tried something similar to this a few weeks ago and it was so simple and fun to make. For the end of the sleeves, instead of inserting an elastic, I added a few rows of shirring a few inches above the hem, and it became a really pretty, romantic sleeve.
almost done making mine and its looking so cute! this is actually the first dress ive ever made and im so happy with how its turning out! just waiting for my elastic thread to come in the mail and then i can finish :D
Okay so here is a tip if you have an HOURGLASS or PEAR shape and you are making this dress! (Please learn from my mistakes!) If your hips are wider than your bust, when you measure the dress panels use your hip measurements rather than the bust measurements. I used my bust measurements rather than my hip measurements, shirred for at least three hours and now have a dress that doesn't fit ;_: Super sad as I had been looking forward to this one and had some really nice fabric that is all made up into a dress I cannot wear ;_; Big hipped people take note!
What about ladies with large bust? I worry that if I do the shirring on my bust measurements then it'll be baggy around my waist, how can I combat this?
Great job! This looks a lot easier than I thought it would. I used to make shirred tops and dresses for my daughter when she was little, but I bought the material pre-shirred. I'll have to give this a try. Thanks! Blessings all!!!!!
I'm in awe, I was searching for a channel like this. I can't tell how happy it made me. I'm wanting to learn stitching for so long. Your dresses boosted my morale
i’ve begun sewing recently, and i really want to make clothes! i thought i wouldn’t be able to do it, and i can never find a dress that looks cute, and fits well on my body type. thank you so much!
OMG I bought these fabric shears years ago, they're incredible and I got a free pair of snips with them too that are still super sharp years later. I think I'd cry if I lost the little snips.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial!!! It's super beginner friendly and I can't wait to give this a go! Hope I have time to stop at the fabric store today!
Love your tutorials! They are so informative and so easy to follow along to! Everything is so clear and easy to understand and I really appreciate that!
This is so beautiful and so much more simple than the other tutorials I've watched for this style - makes me think I can actually do it! Did you shirr the bust area in a spiral (continuous all the way down?) Or did you shirr lines and stop and cut the thread after each line?
BEAUTIFUL (both the dress and the dress maker🥰)! Can't wait to make it for myself!💛 Ps. I have noticed that in some of your videos the volum on the music is a bit louder then the volum on your voice, so I have to turn the volume up/down during the video. Just a little well meant feedback🥰🧡
Dearest Janelle, beautiful work as always 💖 what I like most about you is you have the exact same sewing machine and serger I have😊 As a self taught amatour myself, everything you explained about the machines are so valuable for me. Thank you so much 💖
Love the dress, this is the first time im ever doing a dress. Only problem i have is that my sleeves ended up being so massive ! Dont know what i did wrong but they are a bit ridiculous lol. Definitely going to try again another time.
Yes! This is exactly the kind of dress I'd like to make, and it looks fairly simple! Thank you for this! Would you mind sharing how long it took you to make this (are we talking about a day or are we talking a week)? I'm pretty impatient, so I just need to make sure I don't start something that will take me more than 3 days because I know (from experience) that I am unlikely to follow through on that kind of project 😅
I’m currently making this dress and it’s super easy to make! The only issue I have is that I have a different type of sewing machine to the shirring isn’t turning out right ☹️it’s not scrunching up enough so the top is big but I can adjust it!
Love this tutorial - going to use it to make matching mummy and me dresses for myself and my 4 year old - I have the perfect rescued op-shop doona cover I can repurpose 😂
Hi there! Yes, linen works great for this style of dress 😍 I made one in this video here if you’d like to see: ruclips.net/video/gLE3ftr_a4w/видео.html
Love this, Im a beginner and just wandering What is a normal amount of fabric to buy for a dress like this? And also do you need special needles for the elastic?
If you’ve got a brother machine and are super frustrated with trying to get your machine to properly shir - RUclips it for your machine - I had to tighten my bobbin case with a tiny screw - tried every other combo of tension/stitch length/ and elastic winding …bobbin tighten was the only thing that worked😂
Well, maybe I need to do this. Went through bobbin after bobbin and finally finished, but it didn't shrink down enough and it's too big. Falls right down my chest :(
Your channel helped me when I was brand new to sewing! 🌸Where do you get your fabric? Can you do a video about your favorite places to get fabric online? I’m having so much trouble 😣
To anyone who has made this...I am so excited to recreate this dress but am wondering are the sleeves uncomfortable? I'm wondering if I should add an extra cut in the sleeves for arm space? Love your tutorials....beautiful dress
What I can't quite tell from watching your process on this is if, while sewing the shiring lines, you are stretching the fabric out flat each time so they are not affected by the shrinking from the previous row, or if you are allowing them to be scrunched up as you go. If the latter, would that not make the shiring at the bottom tighter than that at the top since it would increase the reduction each time?
Thanks a lot for explaining so well. Your video has given me more confidence to make a dress. I was not sure how to attach sleeves. Please could u explain when we say saw 4inches is that mean two inches on each side of seem. That is my confusion. Other wise your video is very easy to follow. Thanks again to make sewing easy.
Yay! The tutorial is here!! ^_^ I can't wait to try it, but my machine doesn't seem to quite shirr elastic well at all. I have a Brother machine similar to yours, and I was wondering if you had run into problems shirring in the past, and if so, how did you remedy it? Also, can I ask what brand of elastic thread you're using to shirr? Thank you so much!
Mm I haven’t really had any problems.. the only time I have issues is when the bobbin isn’t hand-wound properly! I use the brand Birch which might just be an Australian brand 😊
@@RoseryApparel Ah okay, I guess I'll just try different things and hope that something works out. I'll also look into Birch as well! Thanks again! ^_^
I’ve started making this and I’m about half way through the shirring but there’s no way it’s going to gather up enough to be small enough. Is it definitely the bust measurement for the width of each of the body rectangles as that would require the shirring to shrink it to half the size to be able to fit the bust measurement? Please help!!
Half way through mine didn’t look like it would gather enough either, but every row of shirring gathers up the fabric more and it will eventually shrink to half the size. If not, then your tension needs tweaking. Did you do a practice sample piece like I show in the video? Also, don’t forget the steam trick, as that shrinks the shirring too 😊
Thank you! I have been wanting to learn how to do this!! And I absolutely love this style! You do a really really nice job with your videos. I'm a new subscriber.
This video so helpful 👍🏼 i love this dress so much and i gonna make some for my lil sister. They will love it so much❤️ but i dont know which elastic thread can i use?
Another fab video and beautiful dress. I just wondered did you know you have adverts popping up throughout your video? This can be frustrating and I know other podcasters have chosen not to have this happen. Not a problem if you chose to have this happen 😊
Do you have any recommendations for someone who needs more room in the hips than in the bust? Would it work to do the top and skirt separately, making the top to fit and adding a gathered skirt for more room?

Did you add the shirring before or after sewing the sleeve closed along the side edge?

Yay that’s so great to hear! It’s such a good project for beginners 😄
I love that you added pockets! I have seen many dresses like this with no pockets, so it’s nice to see a tutorial that includes pockets! So cute!
Thanks! Pockets are a must 😍
Wow!!! I'm a beginner sewer and this looks like something I can actually do! 😍 Def gonna be my new project.
It’s such a great project for beginners! Have fun making it 😄🧡
I’ve been wanting to make a dress like this. I’ve just been too lazy to make my own pattern. Thank you for doing the hard part for me!

I just did this! I wish I had read this comment sooner before cutting into my lovely fabric 😫
this information should definitely be in the video because i wondered the same thing. thank you so much. would this make the top too big though?
