Often mistakenly called smocking, shirring is a technique that creates stretchy fabric out of non-stretch fabric, by sewing rows of straight-stitches onto fabric using elastic thread in the bobbin! It's a really popular technique in fashion right now, and if you're anything like me, once you start shirring you'll become just as obsessed with it as I am and want to SHIRR EVERYTHING. NEW VIDEO: make a shirred top, inspired by the brand Reformation! ruclips.net/video/39LutSrwTds/видео.html
How this does the elastic have to be
Can i ask what kind of sewing machine do u use haha because i really want to make it
@@MissAsherPH I use a Singer stylist, the model is like a 74258 or something 😅 I know it has those numbers somewhere in it lol. it has a teal side panel. It worked for me, but I had to put the thread tension lower instead of higher!👍👍
@@addieh5791 oh the manual sewing machine? I look for it thank you
road
Annika: I promise that is the one and only shirring pun in this video.
Me: Shirr it is
Oof girl, once you learn how to shirr you can't stop. I tried it on a shirt, then a dress, then another dress, aaand a shirt... so yeah.. I'm hooked!
YEP! SAME! hahaha
You should make pants too
ahahahaha shirrt
I'm hooked and I'm now learning
I just bought 2 shirts with this and was wondering how I could do it myself, can't believe I found this video! can't wait to do my own now, so cool!
being neither a chef nor a seamstress but having watched this video and a ton of bon appetit, I have concluded that shirring is the chocolate-tempering of the sewing realm
Best comment ever!!
Yeah, once I heard that elastic goes on the bobbin I decided it's beyond me.
Yeah last time I tried to change my stitch setting I jammed my machine...been on the same setting since 😂
Nicely said
The wording is so perfect here 😭
You and coolirpa are on the same wavelength today. Thanks for the tutorial
OMG I just saw her upload and was like "WHOA - shirring twins!" - great minds think alike! :P
My two absolute favourites! They both are at different skill levels but I love both sides of each of them. The best thing (especially Annika) is absolutely not afriad to admit when she messes up, how to fix it, AND how to avoid many problems altogether. Such great, positive, and entertaining channels!
Thinking the same thing!
Just came from that video and then this shows up on my feed. What a coincidence.. lol
And WithWendy!
I literally found out about how to do shirring a month ago, and thought to myself, “I’d love to see Annika do a tutorial on this”. This video is amazing!
Yes! Who else is glad she did this tutorial?!
Love from a new channel💕
When I had no idea how to do shirring properly, I just stretched an elastic band and sewed it onto my fabric.
It pulled together rather nicely, but I'll try your method next time
That's what I used to think shirring was too! I'd examine the fabric closely, and it really looked like they had literally stitched this ridiculously thin elastic onto the wrong side of the fabric. I was so baffled as to how they got the machine to do that.
Lol, now this tutorial has made me an expert compared to how far off I was then!
I've always wondered how this was done. I never knew that it was so easy a method of sewing. I love the shirred look on some things like blouses. TYSM for sharing this video.
Annika! I love your enthusiasm and clarity! Thanks so much as you answered all of my questions in this single video!! Much appreciated.
i love all the puns
when i get elastic thread i'll be trying this for shirr
Oh, I didn't know I needed elastic thread until I saw this tutorial - now it's on my shopping list for shirr!
A tip for shirring right up to the edge: If the panel has a straight edge, I like to fold the top over to make a casing and insert a piece of elastic there, it gives a really clean finish!
Ah I love your channel! You teach in such a fun and simple way, when watching your videos I noticed I don’t get bored that easily, usually with other videos they sound really ‘dull’ but you show feeling in your videos and make the video exciting to watch.
this is literally the best tutorial ive seen for shirring
Annika, you're a life saver.
I'm a long time seamstress but watched your video for a refresher. This is the best sewing tutorial I have seen. I'll be looking through your other videos for inspiration. Thankyou for a great tutorial.
Love this presentation. Makes everything so clear. Thank you!
I always seem to find your videos every time i can figure out how to sew something. Thanks!
Thank you, thank you! I was planning to look this up on RUclips anyway. Perfect timing
Super clear, concise, and informative! Thank you for making this!
Such a thorough tutorial, thank you!! I’m ready to shirr confidently 💕
Just what I needed!
You just saved couple of articles from having zippers!
Love this!! Thank you so much! This has been the most detailed shirring video I’ve seen. I’ve always wanted to learn to shirr but been afraid to tackle it, now I can’t wait to try it. Thank you.
I bought stretchy thread a week ago and have been trying to find a good shirring tutorial and boom here you are. My savior!
OMG thank you! I had no idea what this was called and couldn't find any videos on it. I'm very busty and this style on my dresses is a life saver!!!!!
That blouse is so cute! I can't wait to see the tutorial!
Thank you☺️.
I just used your video to show my father method of shirring using elastic thread, instead of using thick elastic bands and stretching of cloth to create the elastic effect.
I appreciate your tutorials and project videos so much! your channel is just so fun and educative at the same time
This is a brilliant video Annika, clear and concise. Thank you!
Out of ALL the vídeos that I’ve searched for. Yours is the best!!!!!!!!!! Because of u I just learned how to Shirred shirring
Omg i never knew what this technique/style was so im glad you brought this up😯 I thought it was the same as gathering fabric.
You’re an incredible teacher!! ❤❤❤❤ All the information you present is useful and the visuals go along perfectly with what you’re teaching
Thank you so much! This video was PERFECT for me, somebody whos never shirred before. Everything made sense, I can’t wait to try it out later today
I have a sewing machine I've never used for a year now, and I missed out on a sale of a dress I was madly in love with it was hot pink %100, the typical type dress with the shirring, I can hand sew but haven't done a pattern for many years, but you've inspired me to get that dress lol I cant believe how easy it's done on the machine!
Very interesting! Never realised that the elastic thread might be able to backstitch... I tediously tied off each of the rows the one time I attempted this... Also +1 that you don't need a fancy machine to shir well -- had a bunch of luck doing this as a beginner on a basic mechanical machine and never realised that there was so much to learn on this technique!
Thank you for this explanation of what shirring is and how to do it!
Missed oppuntunity! "I asshirre you that is the one and only shirring pun I will make in this video..." ;P
omgg been wanting to try a square neck blouse thing so keen for that tutorial to drop!!
You give easy to follow and simple instructions.8 greatly appreciate the detailed camera footage . Thank You
your video is the easiest tutorial about shirring that i ever watched. Plus the shirring puns lol i pasted your link on how to shirr in my description box on my first video that i made! You are one of my inspirations in sewing and making videos about sewing thank you for the content and tutorials 💕
Where was this tutorial when i was learning to shirr oh lord. If it helps anyone else, the problem i had was that the elastic was too thick (hemline 0.75mm) so it kept popping out of the groove that gave it tension
does 0.5mm elastic work best? I have 1mm so I guess this is why it doesn't work for me as well..
Thanks for the clearification LOL I never new the difference before ✂📐📏✏😀
What?! A troubleshooting section?! You're a legend! 👍👍
Always been a bit unsure of this technique, now I am ready to give it a try. Thanks!
Well, I tried shirring many moons ago but gave up, and can’t remember why. After seeing your tutorial I can wait to try it again! Thank you, Annika. Just subscribed. 😊
Excellent. Appreciate the detailed explanations & illustrations (showing the dials). Comparisons of fabrics preferred for shirring., Hint to hem. Answered my question as to straight or zig zag stitch. Like that you are to the point in a fun way without a lot of useless dialog or stories.
This is so, SO helpful!! I have an old sleeveless sundress that I’ve had since I was a kid and I’m trying to rework. The main bodice is shirred, and the skirt is wide and flowy. Under the skirt is a second layer, same material as the rest, but now that I own a pair of cotton bloomers I can wear underneath, I’d like to remove the underlayer and make sleeves from the fabric. I want them to be poofy, but in fitting them down to the arm, I hadn’t even considered shirring the band! Oh, I’m so excited!
Omg I’ve been struggling on this for forever thank you you angel
I've been sewing all my life but want to try shirring for the first time. I don't want to diss other videos, but for me, this is the best of the ones I've seen - very clearly explained and demonstrated. Thank you so much.
Oh my god I've been wanting to do this but I was so scared! Thank you for this!!
The best video about how to shirr ever!!!
Thank you -
I managed to get it right first time following your great instructions!
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! I discovered it just in time: I just bought a pattern that has a shirred bodice. Wish me luck!
Wow! Probably the best sewing tutorial I have ever seen. Congrats! Already subscribed for more great content like this.
Very detailed and fun to watch and learn! THANK YOU!!!!
Thank god, simpler seeing machines make changing bobbin thread tension much easier. Mine Janome has special wheel for it. (But my grandmother's Chaika from Soviet Union -- not:( But now I know how to change it there! Thank you!:) )
Excellent! Just what I was looking for. Thank you for all the details.
I like ur video because you not only teach how to do but you tell why do this and that too .. which is very helpful and easy to understand 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
this channel is gold
Awesome tutorial, I can't wait to see the video of the top you made!
Great tutorial! So much energy. You totally hooked me! Looking forward to you other tutorial!
I love the shirring technique and smocking
I was just planning to make a shirred top sundress, Annika! You're perfectly on time with this!
Idk if this is out line to say: this opening intro is my favorite so far! It looks like an intro to a Wes Andersen movie!!
Thank you! ^_^ I was going for that kinda vibe :)
wow. I was holding the skinny elastic and zig zagging over it, which looks cool if yer top stiching a different color on the fabric, but HOLY CROW!!!! this is SOOOOO much more logical. Thank You!
thank you annika this seems easier than it sounded. I think I will find a project to do this on now.
I also did a lot of shirring in my videos lol! Thanks for these techniques really all helpful.. more powers to us! Sheers!😊
I love shirring in my clothes, can't wait to give doing it myself a try!
I needed this so badly to recreate my favorite skirt that is worn out

This tutorial helped me so much! Thank you so much!!!!

Like ur sense of humour... Best video for me so far...👍
Thank you! How did you know that I was planning on a pattern that required shirring? Your tips are always appreciated :)

Hello i just watched this.. i love your sense of humor 😘
Since I have the same machine as you this is very helpful. I’m going to shir all the things!
Oh yay - you can just use the same settings! Have fun shirring!
Such a good tutorial, but I got briefly distracted by how pretty you look! Love the hair colour and lipstick combo! 😍
Thanks for the tutorial. 😊
Excellent video. You are so cute and funny. I was wondering about the "shrinkage" factor of shirring, so glad you covered that.
