Stitch Sisters!! I KNEW it was a trick to shirring on my Brother Innovis. I looked thru my manual & didn't find the key point of hooking & pulling the bobbin thread & not pulling the thread thru the bobbin thread cutter. Your instructions worked just as you instructed. Thanks girls 👍🏾
Thank you! First tutorial I’ve seen with a top loader. Holding that bobbin down and giving the elastic a tug was the answer I’ve spent weeks looking for! So simple.
IKR? The same for me as well, I’ve spent half the day trying different settings on my baby lock to no avail. I never could get my machine to pull the bobbin elastic up from the bottom, guess I’ll keep trying and try the way that she did in the video. 👍🏼🤦♀️
Thank you! I have watched at least 10 - 15 videos on here and not a one told us you had to pull it through your bobbin casing. As soon as I did that it worked amazing and so easy.
Well now I don’t feel so silly, I’ve been sewing since a young girl and I’m 66 now but have never tried using shirring elastic either, I didn’t even know that’s what it was called. LOL 😂 🤦♀️👍🏼 good luck.
Unbelievable! Yesterday I had a mess of shirring elastic on the back of my fabric and today.....perfect rows of neat gathers. The difference pulling the elastic up manually makes is mind blowing. Thank you!!
Thank you for this video! All of the other tutorials I'd see completely skipped over how to put the bobbin in with a drop-in bobbin and your explanation of how to make sure it feeds through was the thing that fixed all of the issues I was having.
Brilliant tutorial! I was nervous about putting elastic thread in my machine but I followed along with the video and it all worked! Off to shirr everything I own lol!
Thank you so much - I have a lovely (bought) dress which I wanted to copy but was put off by the shirring at the waist - now I'm happy enough to give it a go.
THANK YOU! I just recently bought a top loading Compiterised machine after years of using a front loading mechanical and I couldn’t find anyone else to explain that there IS a difference and how to load the bobbin correctly. Will give it a go now!
Me too, Bonnie. I did shirring in the 70's as well. I used a technique with bias tape & elastic back then. My sister is getting back into sewing. She can't find shirred fabric in her city. I told her she could make her own. I found this video and told her about it. This way seems so simple. Thanks Stitch Sisters. New subbie here!
Omg! Thank you so much stitch sisters on this shirring tutorial. You have made this technique so easy to follow. 😘 I’ve be sewing for many years, I work as a tailor/ dress maker in a tailors( when not on furlough) I’ve never had a go at shirring before. I must have been sewing under a stone lol. Love it love it ! I now want to shirr everything lol Thank you ladies 🥰💖
Same here, I have 3 dresses that would look great with the waist stirred like this. I’m so happy that I found this video. It’s so simple and straightforward to the point. She didn’t adjust the bobbin tension or anything, that really surprised me. I just couldn’t tell what stitch she was using. ❤ And YES, thank you LADIES 👍🏼😉❤️ I loved your video!
@Beautiful World thank you so much! I was blessed with my first grandbaby the day after my bday! And the best blessing was finishing the shirring on a dress I made myself. Oh man that is a learning process for real. Took so much patience!
@Beautiful World if it is a brother sewing machine, take the bobbin casing out and loosen the green screw, or it will take you a month to finish the dress! I had to get up and walk away. And be very consistent with the bobbin winding. Don't let there be tighter spots. And absolutely don't forget to leave a long tail when you snip the elastic. Good luck!!! I think mine was so difficult because I was shirring with 2 layers of fabric, a light turquoise soft jersey knit with a blue thick cotton lace over the top. I always pick the most difficult fabrics and I recommend just one at a time for this. It was all worth it in the end! It is so comfy and so beautiful, I impressed myself
@Beautiful World my mom told me she was bored AND bought a brand new machine. I took her some projects. She brought them all back and gave me the machine. That was several months ago. I circled it for at least a month before I say down at it and started creating. I'll start out to do something and completely change the pattern, design, even purpose. I am trying to lower my ripped-out:kept stitch ratio. Lol
Very useful indeed!! I've done plenty of shirring stuff at this point, but this will be the first time I've used the shirring thread method!! Thank you for such easy guidance!!
This was a very clear demo! It’s been years since I’ve sewn with elastic thread but I remember how to do it! Not bad at 74 yrs old after at least 30 yrs since I used the technique. Good job 👍.
LOL, I’M 66 and have been sewing since a young girl and I had never heard about shirring or even that it was called that. I guess I’m a bit SLOW! 🤷♀️🤦♀️👍🏼❤️😉🤣 LOL
Thank you Stitch Sisters! I just finished my first try and it came out so perfectly. I thought it was going to be hard - it wasn’t - and it was so fun! You guys are the best!!!!!!! You gave me the confidence to do this so thank you!
Thanks for the info. My handy tip for hand loading a bobbin easier, put a pencil or stick (I use my seam ripper, perfect size) into the centre hole and you might find it easier to hand-load the bobbing. Doing it the way in the video I kept dropping it due to arthritis. Best tip though in these days is to keep safe keep strong keep well. XX
AWESOME TIP, as I have a problem holding on to the bobbin that way as well, I love it 😻 thank you for that! ❤️ I appreciate it. I’m reading through all of the comments to see if I can find out what stitch setting she used. It looks like the stretch stitch to me which makes sense. 👍🏼 BTW, GOOD HEALTH TO YOU AS WELL!
Thank you so much. I have seen the new dress pattern from Sew Over It the 'Aida' dress and it has shirring on the sleeve cuffs. I started to panic never have done shirring before. This was the first video I came to and both of you have made it look so simple. Now I am going to practice it. Again thank you, this was such a clear and simple video on how to do it :)
this is so interesting thank you! Ive been sewing forever and have never had the courage to use siring elastic bc it seemed complicated? but this looks so much easier than I thought?!
Bought shirring elastic months ago. Always wanted to make summer dresses but never took the plunge. Your video explained and demonstrated every step of the process so clearly. Have all I need to make a little girls dress, so off to my sewing machine. Thank you.✂
Thank you so much for these clear instructions. You've answered all of my questions, and I'm going to try it out on my new sewing machine, here in Australia.
If you read the comments you will see that even some of us that have been sewing for years have never tried doing this, I didn’t even know what shirring elastic was. You are ahead of us, smart girl. 👍🏼❤️😉
Thanks so much! I have a pattern which has an option of shirring and, though I have been sewing for years, I have never tried shirring. No excuse now you have explained it so well!
It worked! I have a brother and a while ago people were having trouble doing this on them. This is the first that ready worked for me. Thank you! Would like to see you make the dress, hint hint. ; )
Thank you so much! All the videos I’ve seen so far showed with a front loading bobbin and I wasn’t sure how it would work with a drop in. This helped so much!
@@StitchSisters Thank you so much for the informative video! I don't understand the problem in using the machine to wind the bobbin. Will it cause too much shirring?
@@crochetlover1880 When you use your machine to load the bobbin with thread or elastic, the machine will usually stretch the thread or elastic onto the bobbin so when you go to use the elastic for shirring etc, there won't be much stretch in the elastic when you go to sew with it. I hope that makes sense :) x
Thank you so much! I was totally lost with my baby lock brilliant, but you saved the day! The one thing I had to do was use the hand wheel to pull the thread up, it didn't work with the needle up/down button. Now I want to shirr everything!
Lovely! Thank you for the quick tutorial. The intro and exit must was so very loud though I couldn't hear you ladies and had to turn up quite a bit, then the music busted my speakers! LOL
That was the best tutorial I have seen in ages. Thank you ladies!

YES IT IS, and the best one out there and it’s 5 years old now! I’m so glad that it was still there for me! 😂❤
