Before you faff about with the bobbin tension, take something that's very fine and sharp and make a tiny scratch to the casing surrounding the screw and another one to match it on the screw itself (you could use micro-dots of paint, but it might wear off, even just with handling and cleaning). Don't line it up with the line across the screw, because that gives you two options. That way, when you're finished manipulating the tension for shirring, you can easily return the bobbin tension to the factory setting that works for nearly everything (except shirring).
Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!! I’ve been trying to figure out what was wrong on my brother machine and I probably went through a test strip over a foot long trying different settings with no luck. Laying in bed now and figured I’d try to find some answers on YT and your video was the first to pop up!! Going to try this out in the morning 👌🏼
THIS!! The only tutorial that WORKS!! I was exasperated from shirring troubleshooting for so many days. Your instructions were perfect and fortunately I have a machine with the same drop-in style case so I could follow along easily. Now I can complete my dress project. Thank you so much for making this video!!
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you! I used my extra bobbin case for special threads. It worked perfectly. All the stitch adjustments were spot on! I'm now a new subscriber. 😎🌻🦋
After 4 hours of frustration, I found your video and all I was missing was slipping the elastic into the feed slot that keeps the tension in the thread. Because the Brother bobbin is automatic loaded the thread loads into the tension feed, with the shirring elastic you have to manually feed into the tension slot. Brilliant video and well explained.
This came in handy. Was trying ti shir for the first time the other night and getting frustrated at the squiggles on the back. Never new about the bobbin on my brother 😅 now ive managed to do 2 lines and it looks great. Will practice a bit more before i try my hand at a garment. Thanks for the video!
This was the PERFECT tutorialwith the only solution that has worked for me, and I absolutely would not have figured this out alone so thank you so much!!!
Omg I was in the same place yesterday... Shorting foot was not working well.…almost gave up sewing with gathers….tried elastic thread but didn't work till I met you. Looked everywhere n this made sense to me….🙏 and it worked….
Thank you! I wanted to start shirring and watched this to preempt any issues, especially since I have constant issues with bobbin tension with regular thread. Everything I saw before seemed to say the bobbin tension is automatic, but now I'm betting if I pull out the bobbin case and tighten that screw it will fix it! Thanks for solving such a frustrating problem. Out of all the videos I've watched trying to troubleshoot, you are the only one to reveal the bobbin tension adjustment!
Going to try this on my brother sewing machine for sure. It was driving me crazy since I knew I was doing everything right and my previous shirring worked but was done on a Janome machine so probably worked differently...!
Thank you- this really helped although I’m finding it annoying as the elastic runs out quickly! Can I ask- do I then have to loosen the screw in the bobbin when I go back to normal sewing?
I was told by someone else who sews that you can do this but that you should loosen the screw the same amount you tightened it when you're finished shirring.
I bought a specific bobbin just for shirring as it will loosen your tension case making it almost impossible to go back to regular sewing. I have a singer 2277 front loading bobbin if that helps.
THANK YOU! Thank you thank you!!! ❤️🖤 of course I needed to rewatch video because I still didn’t do it right from first try 😅 I was struggling for MONTHS and gave up on any and every shirring project I saw! Thank you!!🙏🏻 ps. I have Elna 680
So, yes this works. The problem is its almost too perfect. Sewing a second row was a little difficult because the fabric was so scrunched. Now, I put the bobbin in the regular way, with the tension screw still at it's tightest and it wouldn't gather again. So with the drop in machines, I think uou have to manually thread the elastic in that groove, much like a front loading bobbin, to get that shirred effect. I'm going to play with it a bit to figure it out, but I do think this is the way.
Omg for weeks I couldn’t figure this out. I genuinely shed tears when I saw this worked. Thank you so much this was the most helpful video I’ve watched 🤍

Please help! I have singer heavy duty 4423, and I'm not winning.
Guys please do not adjust the green screw bobbin!!! I just did and found it that it is the one perfectly set for embroidery.
Omg for weeks I couldn’t figure this out. I genuinely shed tears when I saw this worked. Thank you so much this was the most helpful video I’ve watched 🤍
I didn’t need to tighten my screw (mine didn’t come with a screw driver so I tested my luck) t
