    And yes, I guess there is an expect of instilling fear to it.
    The bearskin added height to a soldier, height being an extremely desirable attribute in European armies at the time.
    It was also a mark of the elite, due to the costs of acquiring & making the bearskins, and was usually worn only by an army's Guards & Grenadiers.
    To put differently, it was the culmination of an evolution of headgear that basically saw European armies trying to one-up each other with increasingly more ornate hats.

  • @subdread9987
    @subdread9987 9 лет назад +10

    I love how epic they are.

  • @emptyangel
    @emptyangel  12 лет назад +6

    Back when it was worn on the battlefield around the 19th century, as a soldier would a kevlar helmet today, it was very much a functional piece of headgear.
    It broke the silhouette of the soldier wearing it. Making it tough for enemy lancers, who were trained to aim for the head, to hit their mark & would strike the bearskin instead.
    The curb chain you see resting on the soldier's chin offered some form of protection to the face from sword & sabre slashes as well.

      Joseph ODonnell simply because if you cross the line you are commiting a crime which makes it a police case. If however you'd be armed and threatning and trying to make a run through, the guards will shoot to kill.

    • @anongaming1853
      @anongaming1853 6 лет назад

      Joseph ODonnell Because the gaurd can not actually arrest you, well he cam but he isnt allowed to leave his post...so he cant lol, thats why

    • @jacobwood8653
      @jacobwood8653 6 лет назад

      The Guards are not police and so cant arrest you, the police are equally there for security just like the guards most are armed but they are more practical as they have jurisdiction both in and out the palace. if you cosue a problem the police will deal with you, each guard has a button they can press for police assistance. if you look at old video there were no police and the guards were a lot more active in watching individual threats, now the guards are more ceremonial but if a threat is posed they are armed and trained to deal with it.

    These are the same full-time soldiers who form the backbone of British forces on operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
    The Grenadier Guards, seen here, had just returned from Afghanistan just a few months prior to when this video was filmed.
    They do this until they swap roles with another regiment so the men can go back to what some view as 'real' soldiering, i.e. preparing for operations and the operational deployment itself.

      1st Battalion Grenadier Guards that'll be the answer to your question sir and the lance corporal that was performing the duty of changing over the centuries isn't a commander or anything lance corporals within the British Army carry out the roles of commanding a small group known as (Relieves or Relief) and march them to their post such as what you're witnessing in this particular video. The Grenadier Guards are one of if not the oldest founding regiment of the British Army. 50% of their role is ceremonial which is what you're seeing in this vid and the other 50% is operational, these lovely people aren't tourist attractions they're serving professional infantry soldiers of the British Army. They only have their weapons loaded if the countries threat level is servere if it isn't then the weapons are left unloaded. 👊💂‍♂️🇬🇧

    In their ceremonial uniforms, Lance and full Sergeants can be distinguished by the colour of their chevrons. Lance wear white ones and full Sergeants wear gold.

    The design of the rifle is called a "bullpup". There are actually a few models with this design. The design allows for a shorter overall length while still using a full length barrel which gives the bullet more velocity. France has a bullpup called the FAMAS and a company called steyr makes one too called the AUG.. Those plus the british rifle are the only ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

    So that the handguard and and SUSAT sights don't catch on and poke at their uniform; potentially damaging it over time.
    As well as to provide obvious protection for the lenses on the SUSAT, the cover can be quickly removed should the need to aim and fire arise.

    feel bad for these guys, the high school band at my school is modeled after the coldstream guards and I am a colour sergeant in the colour guard and I 've only ever had to do this for 12 mins (of course we only get one hour a night for 2 nights at the annually concert).

    Actually, I'm from the US, and I am smart enough to understand that if Churchill's Few didn't defend Britain, the Germans would have gotten full control over the English Channel and thus could move west towards America. There are many possibilities as to what would happen if the Battle of Britain was lost by the allies, but the likeliest one would be an invasion of America. So really, they saved us. You have way too much national pride.

      It's normal army drill. Most of the army does it, it depends on what corps you belong to. For example, the Army Air Corps don't.
      It's perceived as being non-belligerent, as opposed to the goose-step for example. It says, "I'm occupying this space, try and move me".

    You said in the description that a lance corporal was sweating bullets, when that was a standard corporal since he had to chevrons on his right arm, one is a Lance Corporal

      Hello, in the Foot Guards Lance Corporals have two chevrons instead of one. Full corporals are appointed Lance Sergeants and wear 3 white chevrons while Sergeants wear 3 gold chevrons.
