  • Comedian Chris Rock recently released a documentary called "Good Hair" and it has caused an uproar in some circles. Some women are crying "foul", saying the documentary releases secrets about African American women's hair that shouldn't be discussed publically. On the next Another View, we'll talk about the social and economic ramifications associated with Black hair. Is it still a "no-no" to wear an ethnic hairstyle when interviewing for a job? What message is sent when one wears braids or locks? Our guests: Dr. Freddye Davy, Director of Hampton University's Honors College; Monique Francis, Owner/Stylist with Beauty Within; Virginia State Senator the Honorable Mamie Locke; and Robert Stitt, Jr., an In-Home Counselor with Inner Circle, Inc. And we'll tell you about BodyWorks, an innovative program designed to get the entire family eating more healthy foods.

Man I miss talk shows like this. Shows where you can just have intelligent conversation/intelligent debates, and people are listening to one another's views. They need to bring shows like this back to television.😩

no one said that kinky is "bad" I'm aware that it decries a curl type. coily might be more specific though.

She's from an older generation. It's like my mom when my sister and I both started our lock journey, my mom hated it. Also because it was short in the beginning. My hair was sooo short this lady thought I was a guy once lol. I was so embarrassed. But she wasn't used to seeing girls with short hair and no makeup on. But yeah my mom started to like my hair when my locks started growing noticeably longer, like in the fourth or fifth month. Now she likes it a lot because I've had them for a year.

I'm gonna show you so much love for that positive comment. I actually look a lot like Monique at this point (shaved off my locs after 10 years and shave it that low now.) And, for years, natural and dark has been belittled in our community. So, your comment made my day. Mad love!!!!!

sigh,,, most people get too wrapped up in complications. Simply put: long and/or shiny hair is equated with health [physical], which is equated with beauty, which in turn, is equated with appeal. Human beings, in general, tend to favor or move towards those things we find appealing. Long/shiny hair has been linked to beauty because its seen heavily as a female trait, and it takes a LOT to keep it looking appealing, so she's right; Long hair tends to be seen as "healthy", thus more "lovely".

When my sister and I went natural, we found that it was the hair we always wanted lol. It was so thick and curly. Never went back to a relaxer. My sister went natural just so she could grow it out healthy and then relax again. But then when she saw the thick and curly/coily hair, she didnt' get the relaxer again lol. She said it was the hair she always wanted when she was a kid lol.

When I hear older people talking about good hair, I pity them because I know their views came from a need to survive a degree of racism that younger people wil never know.

i hate that they keep using the word "coarse" to describe bad hair. just say kinky or nappy. coarse just means that the strands of your hair are not smooth. there are people with straight coarse hair, and wavy coarse. they used that word wrong and it ticked me off.

What about black men. Do you know I had a discussion at work with a black man who truly believes that we as black men are limited to low cuts, & bald heads.

I AM MY HAIR ✊🏾✊🏾It is an extension of my nervous system. It is a conductor to communicate with the universe. It Reminds EVERYONE that I am a descendant of Prisoners of War, 😳Not slaves.
There was a military study done on Native American tracking abilities and the direct connection to hair.
If hair was not that important Society wouldn’t market it so hard. We must realize we are our hair. You feel your Ancestors as you journey through growing your antennas ☺️☺️☺️

i had encountered a senior older woman that she had beautiful braids with naturalfinglets.i told that she a pretty 💇 and she told not to touch it.i said to her i would never touch anyones hair without permission. she said that alot of white folks young and old had been intrusive by touching her hair.i said that was very rude and she said im sorry ....i told that i have people pulling on hair that is half way down my back.it takes alot of time and its expensive.people had touch my red hair bc is baby fine ,healthy and wavy.some people are amazed that i have alot of hair ,its just very fine .so we started to talk about beauty in the hair styles.i said it does bother that strangers can be so bold and scary to just touch a persons hair without permission.my creole stepmom love to touch my hair and she would say its soo silky.our neighborhood and community is predominately white, hispanic and very little black.i just have 4 friends in this neighborhood that are black.so many white people are curious about black folks hair and long locks.there is alot white hippies with dreadlocks.the bottom line is that we should admired it without touching it.

Cutting my locks would be hiding my ethnicity. Did she just say good vs bad hair 😳
😔My people are psychologically messed up and they are teaching our youth. I have beautiful 4C thick curly hair 🥰 My locks are thick and beautiful as a result ☺️

I'm sorry because Grandma (the older lady) is a bit ignorant. She comes across as being someone who still lives in the Jim Crow times. For her to be distinguishing between 'good hair' and 'bad hair' and going off about not being able to get opportunities because you are natural. And, to me, her wig looks cheap, I'm sorry to go at my elders, but she's getting on my damn nerves. And she's an educator?...damn.

I think she just got of the plantation. unfortunately to many sistas think like her. I agree for some jobs you might have to pull a bate and switch to get the job but once you hired do you. but they don't.

The name Dreadlocks came from a derogatory beginning. We must educate ourselves and stop using demeaning white terms and try to endear them. Only a culture that is psychologically enslaved will try to use an oppressors term instead of inventing a new term 😞
