A project done for my Documentary production class at Brooklyn College.

To sum it all up natural hair does rock. I'm loving my natural hair and myself. It's been a wonderful journey. So proud to be a black woman. Great video.
We must learn to treat natural hair as the norm instead of something to tolerate. It is the one thing that makes us unique. Because of our hair, we stand out among every other people. Others try to make us feel less than but the truth is they're jealous because they are all the same. The hair is truly a crowning glory, wet or dry. It naturally forms a crown. Our ancestors did some magnificent things with their hair but today, we have forgotten how important our hair is. From very young, black children see their mothers and all the other women in their lives with straight hair and they grow up to believe that that is the norm. It's no wonder, black people gravitate towards straight hair while cutting off or hiding their own. I believe that once we truly embrace our natural and unique hair, most of our problems will go away because it's the first step in self-love and love for each other.
Excellent video!!! My journey to my natural hair has been eye opening and a great experience. It does come with challenges but it frees the mind and soul and teaches you to love you. I have been relaxer and heat free for about six months now ☺️ #black pride

I think it really depends on the guy on his hair preference for women because I'm hearing a lot of guys getting into women with natural hair. They seem to love it and hate weave. I love the video btw

Such a dissapointment because 4c hair has the negative experience its like the cut off for black acceptance. It needs its separate analysis. You havent went natural or had an experience till your a 4c. You havent really went against the grain and met resistance till youre a 4c. Yeah men like natural but not 4c. Its like black is beautiful to black people unless it goes far like being blue black of having tight carpeted hair which does not billow and halo like smoke.
I’ve been natural about 10 years, you have to learn what works for your hair. It is very freeing and not expensive at all. I find that when my hair becomes unmanageable about every 3 or 4 days water to the rescue, surprised to find my hair needs water to bring it back to life. Sometimes I cream it but my hair likes gel better, my daughter hair works better with crime, I don’t use much oil at all. A satin cap at night does preserve the style.

+Lesego Rapoo natural doesn't necessarily mean I'm it's natural state. natural hair refers to it being free from harsh chemicals like relaxers and texturizers.

+Lesego Rapoo it is still natural hair if it's heat styled. The hair may not be in it's natural state but the same could be said for a ponytail or braids. Hair that is not chemically altered is natural.
This is a lovely documentary.
Everyone is free to do what they want with their hair- BUT it is depressing seeing so many women with weaves. Very sad.
So right @ 11:01, the nurse in my middle school tell me once the word dreads means dreadful, and she didn't like it when people used to associate it with locks.
I found this documentary wonderful. I know that there was a lot of work behind the scenes to arrive to the master final piece. I think you really portrayed the real , REALISTIC views of people especially our women and men. I hope hoping to do a vlogumentary on how the diaspora and slave trade dictate how the Afro-carribean community carry their hair. If you do not mind could you share a few tips for filming. Most people are most beautiful in their natural state, whether it is a short Afro, locks, or braids. It just appears to me that people with African features do not look their best with straightened hair. I wish all of my sisters (and brothers) would go "back to natural" hair, whether it is tightly curled or not.
And if you wear locs keep it neat, some look very bedhead dusty and dirty, and some do look bad, but those that go for hair care, their locs are on point. Weave is too expensive to keep up with, and in the long wear breaks out your own hair, can harbor germs and bacterial that causes itching and some guys say that the weave sticks because of that.
My Great grandmother(Black&from central america) had long ass hair down her back i think it was just a time when nutrition was better. Even North american slaves had beautiful full long hair that ran down their backs. think about how crazy our diets are now vs then.
I totally agree. I know so many black women who have long beautiful hair. It's all about taking care of it and knowing that not all products are best for our hair. We gotta know what works for us.
I totally agree. I'd like to add that back then people used natural products in their hair. Now alot of the stuff they sell are filled with toxic chemicals that do not aid the hair, but its easy and convenient and we get sold on stuff that works better for nobodies hair, especially our dry prone hair.
Issacchar Levi Agree, plus the fact that until recent times (around the 60's) women of all ethnicities kept their hair either covered up or in bun/braided styles that were the precursor to what we now call protective styles. It was considered unseemly for a woman to show her hair in its full glory to men who weren't related by blood or marriage and so women did much less to their hair back in the day--it was washed, oil (or even grease) was put in if necessary and then it was either covered up or rolled up/braided. Heat was rarely used and if so it was a special occasion and the hair was still usually put up in some manner. I think that's why women could use 'grease' back then and get away with it because they weren't putting so much heat to their hair back then and just leaving it alone basically.

I wish this documentary was about 4c hair as it says, not natural hair.. 4c has been separated by the black community and needs its own separate analysis. Its a real journey an entirelt unrelatable experience for black women. If you ask and show black men 4c hair their reaction is totally different.

I disagree with the gentleman at 2:05. I hear a lot of men state this and I find it contradictory. Yes I think that some women can exude confidence with more straightened styles but men tend to like those styles more too. Men usually say they want someone that is natural and t isn't wearing extensions but in the same breath they also want women with long flowing hair which isn't typical with a lot black women.
Whoever came up with the idea of categorizing our hair with numbers and letters? I see this as yet another form of self-hate.
