  • You heard right! One of my exit signs FAILED when I was filming this setup! This is a first in my channel's history. Enjoy!
    *UPDATE*
    A day after this upload, I did another test of the LQM G SD. I had the power disconnected and the sign lasted 98 minutes. So it passed code by 8 minutes. It ran strong through the test, so I guess what happened in this setup was a random occurrence.

    Nice video, those modern exit signs with self diagnostics tend to fail a lot especially under frequent power fluctuations. Also they are made with cheap plastic, recently at my school I helped replace all the modern exit signs from 2010 with nice new metal ones. But hey, at least the old ones we're easy to remove, lol

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  7 лет назад +2

      +A2ZAlarms Not necessarily. Brand names (such as Dual-Lite) usually don't fail. Dual-Lite products, including the common self-diagnostic models, rarely fail. Lithonia sometimes fail, but not all the time. Not all modern exit signs are trash. Dual-Lite still puts in the effort to make a great product.

    • @a2zalarms35
      @a2zalarms35 7 лет назад

      ExitSign250 correct, dual-lite stuff is great, never had any problem, but that Generic stuff does not last long. Yours probably has a shot battery.

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  7 лет назад +1

      +A2ZAlarms Generic is never the way to go. Just cheep Chinese junk that's rebranded by millions of companies. I added an update in the description about the LQM G SD. It doesn't have a shot battery at all.

    Like the emergency lights in the garage,heard that design is spose to be ceiling mounted

  • @MJTVideos
    @MJTVideos 7 лет назад +1

    For the exit lights with no Reflectors, you can remove the bulb, tape off the sides, and give the light a few shots of silver spray paint. It will increase the spread by probably 10 fold, and poses no fire risk 👍🏼

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  7 лет назад

      +MJTVideos Those are called "exit sign
      combos" not "exit lights." I don't think silver spray paint would increase the light spreading. Plus it would look kinda tacky.

    How old was the battery itself? It may have hit the end of it's service life, also, testing the sign cuts the AC power regardless if it's self-diagnostic or not, and trickle charging also kills the battery, too! Slowly, but it still dies, so chances are the battery hit the end of it's service life, so if you test an exit sign or emergency light for two seconds and let it charge, it's killing the battery more, and last I recall, self diagnostic signs test for ~90 minutes? correct me if I'm wrong, I don't own a self-diagnostic sign or light, so I have NO clue!
    Tl'Dr: End of service life due to battery being trickle charged/short used, let the sign do the test on it's own!

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  7 лет назад

      +Bob Tramontana I never said testing a given exit sign doesn't cut power. That's a basic fact. Self-diagnostic exit lighting does many things. One it will tell you if a problem occurs with the unit. It will also test itself once a month for 1 minute. Testing self diagnostic exit lighting does different things depending on the manufacturer. I'll give two examples. Dual-Lite's SD (self-diagnostic) when pressed once will test itself for a minute. Pressed twice will test itself for 90 minutes. Lithonia Lighting, when a unit has SD, and pressed will test itself for 1 minute. When pressed again it will cancel the test. SD units are require less maintenance so you don't need to worry about going around testing exit signs and emergency lights once a month. Now on standard units (non self diagnostic) it doesn't test itself unless someone presses the test button. It will then cut off power as long as you are pressing it. It is always good to test exit signs and emergency lights if they are self-diagnostic or not to see how the unit performs. But when you test a unit for a second then restore it to AC, that does not harm the battery. Unless constant testing happens, the battery is fine. Back to my Lithonia LQM G SD. It isn't even a year old and I have added an update about it in the description if you'd like to check it out.

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  7 лет назад

      +Mr. Nick Wow. Doesn't seem reliable. Yeah, it was installed around four weeks and went through three power outages fine. But when I do a simple 1-3 minute test, it fails. Very odd. Lucky I only spent $7 NIB from Amazon because it was on clearance, so I didn't give an arm and a leg.

      You cannot get into trouble for having these on the wall. I’ve had my exit signs and emergency lights installed around my house for years and have never been in legal trouble for it, plus that doesn’t even make sense. I’ve even talked with fire marshals and inspectors about what I do and what’s on my wall and they think it’s awesome. This argument of having things installed on the wall and getting in trouble for it is untrue and taken very out of context.
