I was just in Japan from November 18 through the 25th, seems like I just missed you. I have been preparing for almost 3 years, I even showed my family the video you made in late 2019 about japan travel tips.
@@AdamEatsTheWorld will do! So I've never heard of like hard off stores until your videos, are they like an old electronics department store? I saw a saturn in one of your videos
Super hype about the upcoming 9 episodes!! Regarding the heated seat: In Korea, there will often be situations where the bathroom is not heated at all. This makes the heated seat much more appreciated, as you don't freeze your butt off while sitting on the toilet. Also, we have Georgia coffee in Korea as well.
been looking forward to the Japan videos! man some of that Kura Sushi actually looked really good, especially the tempura shrimp (27:33) I'd be all over that for sure! can't wait to see the rest of the videos.
This is the one you've all been waiting for foks. This time we join our Bearded Nerd as he FINALLY gets to return to Japan in nearly three years! We begin by seeing at at his home airport in Chicago, as he hops on a plane for over 13 hours and lands in Japan and makes his way to his accomadation for the next 2 weeks. On the way to his hotel he stops at one of Japans many konbini (Conevience Store) 7-Eleven for a couple sandwhiches and coffees. The next day he heads off to a Japanese thirft store chain known as Hard-Off to look at all kinds of electronics related items. And to close out this episode he goes to a Sushi place. - 10 Episodes, oh man. This is gonna be fun. Can you tell I've been waiting for this adventure to start. Thanks Adam.
Very interesting stuff Adam. Looking forward to this series of videos. I would love to visit Japan one day but there's just so much to learn and I feel like the language barrier would make for some awkward moments. Definitely on my bucket list though. Also, just curious, what's the longest time you've stayed up during one of these trips? You looked quite tired when you first arrived.
The escalator thing reminds me of NYC/NJ. Everyone keeps to one side and then the other side is for people with places to be and walk through lol. I can’t wait to visit Japan. I hope sometime next year. Gene’s late friend used to have one of these Japanese toilets in his apartment. That ebi sushi looked delicious. It’s one of my favorites.
Our trips actually overlapped by a couple days (I was there October 20-November 2). I do the same thing as you when I'm in Japan. I get on a train in Tokyo that goes way out west to the suburbs, and I shop at all the Hard Offs and Book Offs in the area. I flew with Air Canada which allowed for 2 free checked bags (50 lbs each). Then I paid the $225 CAD fee to add a 3rd bag, which gave me an extra 70 lbs of stuff I could bring back (to ship just 30 lbs via surface mail would have been over $100 CAD, so it was worth it). They also don't check carry-on weight, so I added another 50 lbs in those bags. It was a wild trip from the hotel to the airport carrying all that luggage, but I made it.
@@영차영차-i1z It seems absurd, but I also didn't have a choice. At the time of my trip, package shipments to Canada were still unavailable for some reason (restored only a few weeks ago). Even if they did exist, while sending a 30kg/70lb box costs a little less than the $225 I spent, I would have had to deal with a language barrier when I mail it (I know from my experience in 2018), it takes 2 months for the package to arrive, and I would have to pay fees to clear it through customs. By paying $225 for an extra bag, everything travels with me on my return trip and I get to clear it through customs myself. Also, a small stroke of luck occurred. I was overcharged on the extra bag, and when the airline refunded me, they accidentally gave mean extra $125 extra, so that bag only ended up costing $100 in the end.
If you have an iphone you can also just add a new transit card and you can get a mobile digital suica. Which you can recharge with Apple Pay (Mastercard only) Even more convienent.
Turns out that's only partially true. The phone isn't what matters, it's the phone plan. The phone has to have been sold originally in Japan. We did a lot of looking into that.
That Hardoff in Tomioka is actually quite small and both the selection and prices weren't that great. I was rather disappointed after walking up that hill. Of course, the stock constantly changes based on who sells stuff to them, so maybe I was just unlucky that day.
for reals, take the train in japan, especially in Tokyo you will hear english and see english on the signage everywhere, I didn't hear/see anything solely japanese until I hit Hakone/Mt Fuji.
So basically use the atm for yen at the airport when you get there, then use a 7/11 the rest of the time. Are you still using a suica card for trains or am I mishearing you?
I'm saying wait until you're at a convenience store for cash, if you can. But since you've never been there before, you may just have to eat it the first time.

Excited for all the episodes. This is the one place I really want to go to one day.
These videos will probably be the closest I ever come to experiencing japan. I’m so jealous of those that can block/manage their anxiety
this is awesome!
Thanks for this great series! It’s getting me super excited to take my young family to Japan!
Im just living through these videos, so ready for march and my trip man.
Let me know how it goes!

Essentially all used electronics, yeah.

and some restaurants as a debit card.

Like two days I guess? It's hard to calculate with all the time zone shifts.
You were there the same time I was!
Loved it, staying tuned for subsequent parts, I hope we get some vending machine action too, what is everyone else hoping for? :D
20:30 Nah, I'm just gonna walk with two suitcases full of games to Osaka from toyko.
At the mall of America here in Minnesota, Kura (くら) is opening a location.
Yeah, it exists in the US. But it's no where near as good.

Ha, awesome.
At that point, is it really more economical to bring things in airplane luggage than it is to pack it up and ship it?
Depends on the airline. United airlines for example, it would never be that expensive.

Are the two different prices on game consoles like the price with and without tax?
Correct.
Do you tip at restaurants in Japan?
No, very much not.
