As of after the release of this movie, Christopher McDonald would appear on a golf course & to this day HAS NEVER PAID A COURSE FEE TO PLAY GOLF !!! Fun reaction, Addie. Happy Gilmore (1996) is my all-time favorite Adam Sandler movie. The funniest scenes for me were when he was in the batting cage getting hit with baseballs, when he was yelling at the golf ball and ultimately cursing at the AT&T Invitational, causing the TV to bleep uncontrollably, and my personal favorite, when he fought Bob Barker at the Pepsi Pro-Am and said to him, "The Price is Wrong, B**ch!".

Happy's fight with Bob Barker is both classic AND epic. The movie's writers tried to think of a celebrity for Happy to fight, and his name jus t kind of came up. Everybody loved the idea, but thought there was just no way they could get Bob on board. Bob himself was unsure, but agreed in the end - on condition that HE won the fight.
As it happens, Bob has been a keen martial arts enthusiast for most of his life. So it turned out to be pretty much ALL Bob in that fight scene. The only real work his stunt double got was in the rolling down the hill part.

Had to wait for an ambulance to get back on set each time to continue shooting. And the subway for lunch and dinner every day got old fast lol. The hotel they rented for staff was in a horrible part of town and most of us had to switch hotels to sleep safely then can to the original hotel for the bus to the set every morning. The scummy hotel is in the opening to 21 Jump street.

A lot of people don't realize but pre-American Pie 90s were still pretty wild. Comedies were usually PG-13 rather than Seth Rogen R, but they pushed that rating to its limits. Everything was raunchy and juvenile. It wasn't just Adam Sandler. This is pre-Wedding Singer Adam Sandler, so he's still playing kind of an angry, bipolar guy. Wedding Singer was the first time we got a real, adult character out of him. At this point, he's fitting right in with 90s comedy that was dominated by Jim Carrey. Reign Over Me is still my favourite Adam Sandler movie, followed by Spanglish and Wedding Singer, but this is nostalgic for me, like Ace Ventura. I'm not going to pretend it's a Jerry Lewis classic, but I still get a kick out of it - and the random appearance by Carl Weathers, AKA Apollo Creed from the Rocky movies.

All Happy (Sandler) has ever wanted is to be a professional hockey player. But he soon discovers he may actually have a talent for playing an entirely different sport: golf. When his Grandma (Bay) learns she is about to lose her home, he joins a golf tournament to try and win enough money to buy it for her. With his powerful driving skills and foulmouthed attitude, he becomes an unlikely golf hero much to the chagrin of the well-mannered golf professionals.

This is I think the best AS movie. Not my favorite. Just his best. Having said that I still haven’t seen his dramas. Chubs appears again in another of his movies. I won’t say. Also also… Love Christopher McDonald. He’s such a good guy to absolutely HATE. FLUBBER, THE IRON GIANT… oh chefs kiss.

Good choice of Sandler films. If I may suggest some stuff: Monsterverse films (Godzilla, Kong Skull Island, etc), Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World Part 1 and Robin Hood Men in Tights

The "Construction Boss" was Richard Kiel. He played "Jaw's" in a couple of James Bond Movies. As if being a Giant wasn't enough, They gave him Solid Steel Teeth and could chew through anything... including People's necks!

Sports movies and movies which are just done with a sports-theme in the background are great... the inherit drama of the sporting event ... the athletes themselves and their stories... it's just "story-telling" when done right.
In terms of golf films... There is the classic "Caddyshack" with Bill Murray and Chevy Chase ... "Tin Cup with Kevin Costner (who's done a bevy of sports films) - I highly recommend THIS one, personally... "The Legend of Bagger Vance" and "The Greatest Game Ever Played" ... they've all got great moments.

You've never watched the Rocky movies?
Another good golf movie (not nearly as silly, but still humorous) is Tin Cup (1996), starring Kevin Costner, Cheech Marin, Rene Russo, and Don Johnson.
... Watching Bob Barker kick Sandler's arse was fun.
One of Sandler's less well known movies is Airheads (1994). Sandler is one of three co-leads (Sandler, Brendan Fraser, and Steve Buscemi). None of them look like they normally do. A local rock band (our three heroes) are so desperate to get their demo tape played they accidentally hijack a local radio station. The cast is stellar.

TWO things have always kept me from liking this movie: 1) the 'angry' Sandler thing, and 2) Sandler doing the rookie 'I can't believe I'm doing a movie' SMIRK/goofy grin the whole time...Maria Carey did the same thing in Glitter, go ahead and check. 😆

I know it's just an Adam Sandler comedy where ridiculous things happen constantly, but there is NO WAY they would force Shooter to hit a ball off a patron's foot or not rope off the tower that got hit by the car. Also, Shooter's logic that Happy has to play the ball as it lies because "I had to hit it off of Frankenstein's fat foot" doesn't really apply because he hit his ball ONTO Mr. Larson's foot, whereas the tower blocking Happy's shot was due to the negligence of the pro tour's security.

Cutting out Ben Stiller getting his just due didn't make sense. There should have been an extended scene of him being destroyed, perhaps literally, on top of him throwing him out the window (a cut scene). He's by far the biggest villain of the film so that was an odd choice! Nice reaction. :)

Yeah you are totally right that this is a feel-good movie. One of the better Adam Sandler movies. Probably my favorite of his silly ones with The Wedding Singer being my favorite overall. I actually owned this movie on VHS at the time lmao.
I just think the casting choices for everyone in this works super great lol. Ben Stiller with the stache was pretty funny even in his minor role. And Christopher McDonald as Shooter is perfect because he plays a good, hateable character lol. I remember seeing him on a SVU episode after this movie and instantly knew he was gonna be the bad guy.

Not only did a tv legend beat up Adam Sandler, but Happy's favorite Subway sandwich is the same as mine. Those two things and the hilarious writing make this movie a classic.
