This little lesson may be old, but it holds a ton of extremely valuable information. Especially when you’re struggling with hand technique or want to learn all about it. I’ve watched literally every single lesson about hand technique or stick control, but every other lesson just makes a whole lot more sense after watching this lessons.
Thanks so much for this. I am a professional drummer that works about 10 dates a month. I recently developed the "drops" and when I looked at my technique and realized I was dropping my sticks due to a lazy grip. I was way to close to the butt of the stick. Your video has helped immensely. My hands have been killing me, but I know its only because I am getting back to basics after straying for quite a while. Thanks again!
From Wally Schnalle: We are always more comfortable with our habits (even bad ones) than new ones. Practice and some careful coaching from a good teacher will bring it around. Changes in technique can take many months to concur. But eventually they come become habits as well. Look at your drumming as a long journey....some of this stuff takes time.
This is very well presented. Clear and inofrmative
I really like how you clarified the german and french timpani positions. I never knoew what those were, but I found myself using those positions often and wondering which way was "right." Now i know they're both right, but for different things. I had started thinking the french timpani was the all around, but when trying to do double strokes, the german timpani position felt way more comfortable. Now i know why, and what those positions are called. Thanks a lot and great video!!!
2:17 OMFG LOL!!!
Nah kidding, mister. I really appreciate you upload this stuff, it really works for me because I use to play fast and a little bit loud and strong music and when I improve drum sessions too.. so this stuff to learn how to really hold the sticks are very helpful. Thank you
great teaching im 43 and learn easy with u
Playing the video without watching it and only listening to the audio is quite humorous.
at last a good and thorough explantion.. exactleuy what i have been looking for.
Thank!!!
From Wally: It's not a "wrong" technique but it does limit the tone and energy you get back from the stick. You'll end up doing less and expending more energy. And as for it feeling more comfortable in the second knuckle...that's because it is your habit. We are always more comfortable with our habits (even the bad ones)
this is awesome Wally Shnalle
The flag is printed at the fulcrum on Vic Firth 7A also.
Very nicely done, video, Wally!
I have that snaredrum! it's awesome, i just bought it
Here I something I've learnt. If you use Vic firth 5A sticks this should work. The American flag is a good fulcrum. I'm not sure if this works on other stick sizes (like 7B) but it works for 5A's
My boyf. is gonna love this. Even though he's an amazing musician on drums. :)
@MrCjfern
Yah, listen to floating jet and lower our cymbals. Especially hats. Also adjust your snare so you aren't rim shot-ing accidentally. Angle it towards you a bit.
"if you got meat all the way around that stick..." Priceless :P
It comes from how mallets are held for tympani. At least that's what a former drum teacher told me and what a lot of books talk about. Those two grips came over to the drum set.
@a8thebait4774
You're welcome
you should do a video just on double strokes
good video.
my problem is that my thumb has a habit of not leaving any space between itself and my pointer :/ any ideas on how to fix that?
great !i can understand ! :) thank you sir!
This was a good video. 5/5
hey thanx this is helpfull...
I've been drumming for four years but rescently I've been getting blisters on mostly my right forefinger when I play for about an hour. Is it my technique or is it something that is common?
thanks man
You notice how these tips can transfer into activities for those disappointed individuals.

"If you got meat all around that stick, it's shockmounted, and you're not gonna get any bounce outta that." haha
6:50 "if you got meat all the way around that stick..." ^^
And over-explanation ftw.
Thanks !!!!!!!
this video is loaded.
Anyone got any tips how to stop my drum sticks from chipping. I get them off my drum teahcer, is it because they're bad quality. I play light and they stil chip and they break so easily, you see the rock drumemrs and theres chip alot less oftern. Please help.
0:10 THATS WHAT SHE SAID! and i think that goes for the whole video including the title... xD
hay can you get me a 1 song title nemo from nightwish, and i just want to be sure am i a right tone to hit or wrong.. You get me? right?
@drummerman875
after u heard "axe" pres nine... "Axe pelgrim":P
super duper!
@DrumDestroyer100 And this is a video about his style?
I have to disagree on the gab between the thumb and index finger in the fulcrum when your talking about putting 2 fingers between it. For that does work on somethings but as u get into more complex rudiments such as some inverts and hybrids its best to keep that close. From studying under Bill Bachman its best to stick a quarter or a 50 cents piece between that gap and if it falls out then you know its to much
if you press '1' it sounds like he says "axe"
I slept during science class :D
Note: THIS IS NOT PROPER TECHNIQUE FOR MARCHING, you want your hands closed. This is more for drumset playing.
@Nigelxman why thank you ^_^
in my experience all vic firth sticks do that
LOL I noticed it too.
I don't think he's that nervous. He may not be used to talking to a video camera, but he doesn't seem that nervous. And why are you bringing this up? Wally's actually right.
Someone should forward this to Meg White.
If I hear "UHM" one more time I will scream!!!!
2:16 lol

That is what she said...
@seanwalrus dude seriously xD
the video title seems so wrong.
A Stick!
I am a master at manipulating my stick.
Pfffff, I already know how to grip my stick...
:P "your" can also be plural.
Why did my drumstick jizz?
you mean "un-loaded"
the title is "that's what she said"
well isnt that just something
Wanna see dirty? Check his hand movement in 2:17
u gotta stroke it too hahah
Maybe Freud was right after all...
Really? How so? I've taken private lessons from a variety of drum teachers and have lots of drum books and he's saying basically the same thing all of these other sources discuss. There might be a few other techniques out there, but he's covering most of what drummers should know.
Wow, that title is just wrong, especially with the interesting name of the instructor!
Ofc it is in plural. You con't play with one drumstick do you?
haha epic
