You're all right. When this video was first done, people in the office thought it was "too simple." But a lot of you are learning from it and that is a great thing.
I agree with guitardds I am a new drummer and I am setting up a studio in my house as we speak. I play guitar and I am just now starting to learn drums. We are lucky we have people like this fine man to help us for FREE and he gets nothing out of it. You KIDS need to grow up. Thank you so much for the help I look forward to more of your lessons.
Actually, modinaman, this is one of the most popular lessons, which proves there are a lot of beginners. But, look, everyone has to start drumming somewhere, and a great tune like this really hooks people into wanting to learn more.
Thx for the video! This really helped me A LOT. Also its very easy to follow for all the people who just got into drumming, or the people who just wanted to learn this song. I hate when people give negative comments on this, just because they think theyre too good...
Everyone saying that the song is easy, well yeah it is but then again anything is easy when your a seasoned drummer for years I have was playing this without the flor Tom just using base and snare, it works but is didn’t quite sound right, so please try to respect that everyone needs to learn and this song enable them too
Thanks for the lesson, and yes, I'm a brand new drummer so for all you experienced drummers who are hating on this, why? you started out as a beginner too. Even if your way beyond this, there was a time you weren't.
You're not going to believe this, but I actually discovered how to do "heel and toe" technique while playing this tune! I found that with the tempo of this song, and the bass drum playing every quarter note, the beater was occasionally hitting the head again in between each quarter. I guess my pedal tension meant the beater was swinging back and forth twice as fast as the quarter notes so it started playing the off beat eighths by accident! Never thought I'd say this but THANKS MEG!!!
I agree. My 5 year old brother is just learning drums and he liked this because it reinforces what he's learning. Clearly if any haters out there are talented enough to consider this "too easy," they should go watch something else.
Hold on. We were talking about TWS yesterday in the DRUM! office. Is it bad drumming or brilliant music? Most of us say the latter? You make music with the skills you have and the White Stripes do it better than most.
I fail to understand why anyone would need instruction on how to play this song on drums. Easy doesn't even enter into it. Yes its a solid beat that fits the song but to have a 4 and half minute video explaining how its played. Madness!
Hold on Obvious, We were talking about this literally yesterday in the DRUM! office. Is it bad drumming or transcendent music? At every stage of musical development you have to make music with the skills you have. It doesn't matter if you're not Mike Portnoy. The White Stripes make music and it's good.
Ok, pal, you might be interested to know that loads of people enjoy this video. All drummers need to start somewhere and Meg's profoundly simple playing ain't a bad place.
@sk8erdude106 actually it is, but you should play with a tom a little less "bassy" ...you can actually watch a little bit how does Meg White plays it in the music video
@andyaction2679 try the drums; it will improve your development of rhythm, as an example rhythmic cadence as opposed to harmonic. I think you will notice a very real improvement in your guitar playing after only a few months of drum practice. As an aside, Jack white was a drum player before he played guitar.
Crawford: you forget that the core of music has nohting to do with skill. at the end of the day it is all about producing a sound that is pleasing to the ear.
@rockomundo I know. It's just the first song I taught myself on bass. You've got to admit that the beginning definitely SOUNDS like it has bass, even if he's using a lower octave filter thing.
I have to say, this song is really easy, i learned it really fast.. but i just watched this video to see which drums she hit, i didnt know she used the floor tom and stuff. :)
I like how complicated this guy makes a beat of the floor tom, the bass drum, and high hat. with two parts. lol i could teach this in less than a minute... as a matter of fact I HAVE! lol
@GianMariaVolonte666 Well, first of all, a lot of self taught drummers might not know how to count, so that's a good thing to know, and they should also know how important it is for everything to be synchronized.
Thanks, I am pretty sure in the recording I hear the ride being tapped along with the bass drum. I have never played it with the FT and Bass drum, just the bass drum and ride.
hey you jackasses i was havin trouble figuring out the sixteenth note part by myself and this video really helped me out. but then ive only been playing for like 3 days. thanks wally!
Jack White is a minimalist. It would not make too much sense to have wildly synchopated drums on this song. Simple does not necessarily mean simple-minded. Listen to some Satie and you might understand. Nice tutorial! ~Jon
Why are people here talking shit about this. The song is very simple, yes, because that's the point. Punk music is all about simplicity. It's meant to be stripped down to very basic rhythms, beats, and guitar riffs.
This is a great song for early beginning players. Two things wrong with the instruction: Meg goes to Tom 1 with the left hand after the crashes in the pre chorus. Also, she splices the HH with the left foot, instead of staccato "chick"ing. Watch the official video or the live version to check.
@CrawfordDrummer Whoa dude, Jack White would smoke you (and many others) in any instrument. Dunno what you mean by advanced but he is a great guitar player, no question about that.
To ppl I play guitar and soon I wanna play something else wud I enjoy drums bass or keyboard pls pls help Ps I'm not giving up on guitar I'm learning something else

This was a great vid, thanks! I just got drums and with this video learned my first song on my second day!
This was probably the most helpful video I’ve found so far on showing how to play something on the drums
Actually, modinaman, this is one of the most popular lessons, which proves there are a lot of beginners. But, look, everyone has to start drumming somewhere, and a great tune like this really hooks people into wanting to learn more.

+Bas Riemenschneider

I'm doing this for my shcool's talent show. This vid saved my life! Thanks!!!
Everyone saying that the song is easy, well yeah it is but then again anything is easy when your a seasoned drummer for years I have was playing this without the flor Tom just using base and snare, it works but is didn’t quite sound right, so please try to respect that everyone needs to learn and this song enable them too
It's a simple song and what she plays is incredibly simple, but there are nuances and that is what Wally gets across
Love the snare, great sound
you rock. we love your lessons. keep it up
thanks so much for the lesson, I got my first kit today and was desperate to learn this song :D
dude this is really easy, after i watched this video i played this on a friends drum set the next day and that was my first time paying the drums man.
Thanks for the lesson, and yes, I'm a brand new drummer so for all you experienced drummers who are hating on this, why? you started out as a beginner too. Even if your way beyond this, there was a time you weren't.

Good tutorial. Great for beginners like myself.

Thanks man! I'm learning drums and guitar on this! :)
my band played this last night, and my drummer was literally playing it all with one hand, made me laugh realll damn hard
Hold on. We were talking about TWS yesterday in the DRUM! office. Is it bad drumming or brilliant music? Most of us say the latter? You make music with the skills you have and the White Stripes do it better than most.
Just starting drums and this helped a ton :)

It's very well explained and I loved it! +Subed!
I fail to understand why anyone would need instruction on how to play this song on drums. Easy doesn't even enter into it. Yes its a solid beat that fits the song but to have a 4 and half minute video explaining how its played. Madness!
Thanks - very clear, especially the little syncopation part.

I played this a while back with my school band at a shopping centre when I played drums. Came back the other day and I’m horrible. I remember a bit
Nice and clear.
Very helpfull im perfoming this at school
Nice sounding kit.
We'll put it on the list for the future.

you sir just made me laugh...congratulations
Thank you:D
I like how complicated this guy makes a beat of the floor tom, the bass drum, and high hat. with two parts. lol i could teach this in less than a minute... as a matter of fact I HAVE! lol
Ok.. So i am by no means an experienced or great drummer.. But i do believe that this song is simple enough for somone to pick up by ear..
Hey, what crash cymbal are you using in this video?
When I do this song my tom sounds messed up. Can anyone give suggestions on why and how to change it?
I love how this video Exists.
@GianMariaVolonte666 Well, first of all, a lot of self taught drummers might not know how to count, so that's a good thing to know, and they should also know how important it is for everything to be synchronized.
@sk8adio42 jw i just got my drums about 5 minutes ago does that count?
does that tom have a bottom?
the whole 1'y and a 2'y and a 3'y and a 4'y thing i find funny every time i hear it lol but still a good vid, saved me on that tricky part
Thanks M8 :DDD
Thanks, I am pretty sure in the recording I hear the ride being tapped along with the bass drum. I have never played it with the FT and Bass drum, just the bass drum and ride.
Great lesson!

thanks wally!
Hahaha I love how everybody's ranting about how easy this is!!!
you should!!! is very very very very easy
it's a very easy song, even for beginners

i think i got it, but i'm having trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time. could you demo that please?
@CrawfordDrummer Whoa dude, Jack White would smoke you (and many others) in any instrument. Dunno what you mean by advanced but he is a great guitar player, no question about that.
i'm beginner too and it's VERY EASY
one-ee and a two-ee and a three-ee....this guy totally messed up my counting....
best riff hands down is either from bottom of the death valley or knives and pens
