- Corvette returned to the world's most-demanding testing ground -- Germany's famed Nurburgring -- and recorded lap times that rank among the fastest recorded for a production car.
As detailed on video, the Corvette ZR1 recorded a lap time of 7:19.63, more than six seconds faster than the previous Corvette-best recorded in 2008. A lap video featuring the Corvette Z06 will be released soon.
"Testing at the Nurburgring is one of the important methods we have to validate our car in the toughest track conditions," says Tadge Juechter, Corvette vehicle line director and chief engineer.
Measuring 20.8 km (12.9 miles) and including some 154 turns, the Nurburgring's Nordschleife ("north loop") is widely considered the world's most-demanding course. As was the case at Corvette's last test in 2008, the car was driven by Corvette engineer Jim Mero and was a full production model with no performance modifications. This test was to validate the car's added performance technology coming to production later this summer for the 2012 model year.
Corvette's improved performance for 2012 begins with the new, optional Michelin® Pilot® Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires, which are available on the two highest-performing models, the lightweight, 505-hp (377 kW) Z06 and the maximum-performance, 638-hp (476 kW) supercharged ZR1. They are competition-oriented tires, optimized for warm, dry conditions to increase cornering and handling capability.
When combined with the Corvette's exclusive Performance Traction Management (PTM) technology -- which manages torque delivery for maximum performance -- the tires set new benchmarks for Corvette performance. Engineers estimate an 8-percent gain in maximum lateral acceleration, to more than 1.1g, and improved braking distance.
@ 7:21 It doesn't look like much of a turn, and for an all out race car it wouldn't be that big a deal but to go into that turn at 181 mph in a stock car with no roll cage and on street tires takes massive balls and just shows how good the vette handles
Carl carl
I wouldn't classify those tyres as street tyres. They're more like sport/track tyres.
Carl carl he actually went as high as 182/183 mph
Aaron Smith there still tires that are made to drive on the road also
Race car or not that's insane!
@@aaronsmith7143 Still come stock on cars like this from the factory man. Definitely street tires, but with track tire performance is how i classify them!
People can put down a Vette all you want, but it runs pretty damn good! For the money you spend your getting a hell of a car.
You're.
This absolute demon of a car is faster round the Nurburgring than a Maserati mc12 which is a full on supercar

Tampa Tuning. Question. What would you rather have for a 3rd car fun driver, 2012 ZR1 centennial edition OR Gen5 Viper GTS?
10 years later and still impressed 👏👌😎
Jeremy Clarkson would spin off the road in this vehicle and decleare it to be undriveable
Edited, huh? Declare.
indeed -__-
He was drifting the car on purpose in that review against the R8. He actually loves the C6 ZR1
Europeans will complain if there's no cup holder in the console.
But there is a cup holder in the console 🤔
183mph in the straight! This must be the stig's father!
The amazing part about that, is he still had another gear! The ZR1 reaches top speed in 6th.
@@xMrMaKx Wow, that's amazing
It's not the Stigs father... But it is THE STIGS AMERICAN UNCLE!
Truly is a shame we never got too see Jim drive the 2019 ZR1 on the ring, awesome driving, can only imagine how fast he could go with 125 more hp and better grip.
He died?
@@Re3iRtH He retired.
Driver knows that ring very well and his ZR1. I have A 610HP Vett and with all my racing experience I wouldn't have made it 1 mile trying to keep up with this man. congrats driver and congrats to the ZR1 vets.
Don't fret. He obviously has many, many laps around this track, and knows just how hard to push the car.
No sh*t that's a pro driver😆
@@curlyefrain9879 He is also one of the engineers on it.
@@stevehillman7648 yeah, but a small mechanical failiure or a slight misjudgment of the corner would probably mean the driver would be killed. This car won't have all the safety features you see in racecars. No matter how skilled you are, it still takes balls of steel.
What the hell are you talking about? This is the engineer driving, not a professional driver. Also, the Nürburgring officials only allowed him to make 2 laps, where most companies are given a few dozen laps. That's right, your Porsche's, Ferrari's, whatever run multiple laps, and pick the best time to display to the public, where this car was only given 2 laps!
Super impressive! What also blows my mind is that the 12-13 C6Z06 with the Z07 package managed to only go 3 seconds slower with the same driver around the ring with 505hp compared to this supercharged animal with 638hp. Don't sleep on a C6 Z07 equipped car! They are just as impressive as a ZR1! I'm currently in the market for a 2011-13 C6Z06 with Z07 package or a 2010+ C6ZR1 🤗
Hope you found your car buddy! A C6 ZO6 is one of my dream cars too
Amazing driving! What a car. Even by 2020 standards...
Took the corner and 180Mph :O
Corvette... a car that can punch so far above it's class that it's legendary.
Wow! Incredible driving. The G meter was all over the place.
Wow this lap really gives me a new found respect for the ZR1, some really impressive entry speeds on these corners and the twitchiness towards the limits of cohesion of the C6 chassis was either ironed out by the engineers or the tires, either way you can tell how stable this car is near its limits, especially when it leaves the ground, and that was demonstrated by how confident this driver was pushing the car right up and onto the kerbs.
Good job GM, that bailout money was well spent!
Lol at the last line
Good job driver... This car is brutal. Driving skills required.
Even in 2021 imagine turning on a genuine curve at 183 Mph @7:19 thats insaneeeeeee
WOOT!!! My most fav car period gets even faster than before now!! Love the Vettes always and forever.
When i look back at this video it still very impressive and the sound of that engine incredible.
Now imagine the zr1 with cup 2's, easily 7:16-7:15
And no down force ! 😳
@@TooManyChoices1 the car need down force for high speed cornering
I love driving this car on Gran Turismo. I only have a Z06 at home, but I can't wait to take it to the track
Wow! As a 2012 ZR1 owner I have even more respect for my beautiful and powerful car!
That was totally awesome!Love to see what the new Z06 C8 will do!
THATS DRIVING! Much RESPECT!!!
Fantastic video. Imagine having a chassis engineer who can drive like this. Lump in my throat watching the bend at 180 mph and then slowing for the tighter corners near the end. Never been a big Vette fan, but the ZR-1 is much more than a drag racer.
Great run! Not bad for stock. Tires really helped.
DID I SAW 1.6G ???
Holy fuck !
That beast got some grip !
It actually went to 1.7G :-)
Simeon Petkov *ONE POINT SEVEN!*
I saw it peak at 2.0 something in the Carousel.
Simeon Petkov 2015 Z06 numbers came out today 7.08. 11 seconds faster.
Holy fuck guys.. Just watched the video again after two years...
Watch carefully at 0:46...
ONE POINT FUCKIN NINE G !
Great video! Bought a new 2019 Corvette Grand Sport, with a MANUAL TRANSMISSION, and it’s a great car! Huge power, fantastic handling, and with the magnetic ride control, the car goes from track stiff to smooth ride in an instant. My wife even asks when we can go for drives in the Corvette Grand Sport, and that rarely happens with my NSX. Buy one, if at all possible, life is short.
Trying to decide between that car and the 2013 427 60th anniversary convertible.
I agree, and they are both absolutely amazing cars, why hate one when you could appreciate them both?
Amazing Car, Amazing Driver, Amazing track.
Gotta see more of this car!
there is no fucking way you can compare this to a GTR...1) the guy is having 1 hand while shifting and downshifting....2) the car only has traction on the rear tires.....Enough said.
GTR can only do this while both hands on the steering wheel while ALL wheels are gripping.
+325hpls1 There has been a modded C6 Z06 that did 7:04 on the ring. It had a stock TUNED engine, rear wing, new suspension, and some weight reduction.
I watched a side to side hot lap. Corvette zr1 stock beat the nismo tuned gtr race monster by more than 5 seconds. The clip shows the vette pitting while the gtr is still taking the last two turns. They said it was a gtr victory though lmfao.
+325hpls1 If Corvette decided they wanted to change the whole platform of the Vette to mid engine all wheel drive dual clutch gear box it would kick the shit out of any competition period! A manually shifted rear wheel drive car did 7.19 at the ring in it's current platform..... Haters can hate on the Vette and talk all the shit they want but the fact is the out going ZR1 is the best performance bang for your buck in the history of any production car!
It's not about lap times. It's about going 'round with a cool car.
+brgable1976 no doubt! My pops just got one for his birthday and man that shit pulls hard!
Dream car !!!
As much credit as I give to laptimes around Nurburgring for indicating a cars abilities, what you're saying is very true. There's 1,000 ft elevation change on the tourist config and air temp and density can be notably different on certain sections of track. This is less important for forced induction motors, but naturally aspirated motors can have dramatic differences in performance with denser air.
It's a great benchmark, but should not be the be-all end-all of a cars summary.
They don’t make them like this anymore
That back straight before the finish line that thing chewed up that part . I've seen cars on the same stretch and it looked like they were on that stretch for hrs . Fast cars too . Damn
what a beautiful ride.
What's amazing is that's a push rod engine, no over head cams.
Perfect camera angle!
Honestly one of the best drivers I have ever seen 🙌
Balls of steel....and that car is an absolute monster.
couldn't agree more...about the car that is...lol
Still makes other cars in 2023 a little bit scared!
Part of the difference between the 2008 (2009 model) run and 2011(2012) run comes in the straight. In 2011 he stayed in 5th and redlined it to the max, in 2008 he tried 6th. Peaks 177-8 mph @ 6350 in 2008 vs 183 mph @ 6550 rpm in 2011. Raise the limiter few more rpm and secs come off. Omg imagine the 2018 zr1! ....btw..The Ben Collins has nothing on The Jim Mero!
While that's true, some of the more notable differences in the 2012-13 are as follows IMO:
1) PTM system
2) Lighter cup wheels
3) Much grippier and responsive Michelin Cup Tires
4) You could say the revised seats also added for a better track experience to keep you more secure pulling those FAT G forces!!!
Wow that last little drift to the left had to be scary
The very car that ran this lap is in the National Corvette Museum. It has racing seats, 5 point belts and a harness bar. No roll cage.
Gotta love the zr1
such an awesome car and you could not let it run without yapping. how was tha timinmgen agin?
So beautiful! Look at that huge Nokia phone with monstrous 2" screen!
Nokia phones are bricks, go find a yellow mustang and talk like that
I can't wait to see what the 2014 zr1 can do on this track.
All these cars and driver's are all that, but can't anything beat a Porsche around these tracks like this... much respect to all that conquer this track at high speeds...🏎️🏎️🏎️🏎️🚕🚓🚑🚑
It was on the optional OEM michelin pilot sport cups.
@dormytorry They are coming back in 2012. Suppose to have over 700 hp and are adding traction control. This will be the second time that the Viper has been brought back. Its a marketing sceme. It worked the first time so I guess they wanted to try it again. The Viper ACR posted a lap of 7:12 and the Viper ACR-X posted a lap of 7:03.
I have a 1992 GMH VP HSV GTS Commodore that is just as quick, but it is fully worked (5700 cc). This Corvette is stock from the factory. I love the Chev Corvette and Chev Camaro.
Mmmmmm that pull at the end
@Xyleksoll true, that's the time but they said they could do better and they were not using this kind of tyres..with tyres like this it will definitely get a better time..
Beautifull Beautifull absolutly
love that zr1 great job Chevy
In a stock car. Great driving.
What a beast! 7:22 180mph turn xDDD
Incredible.
Damn a camaro zl1 1le puts down 7:15 on that course. Way to go Chevy. Upping the game with new generation.
that was beautiful gave me shivers lol
Perfect! 💯
Jim Mero is a fucking boss. Guy helps design the chassis then rings it's neck. No pun intended, what a machine. That is scary fast, let alone for a production car that hasn't been altered. I mean fuck any idiot including myself... if I had the money... could buy one of these things. I believe the nurburgring record is somewhere in the 6:40 range, and that was a bolisitc race car. Everyone saying shit about the driving is absolutely stupid, Internet stupid. Perhaps yes a fully professional driver could shave a second or two but jesus. Corvette has a handful of race car drivers at their whim, they use this guy because a his almost just as fast, and b when he's done he goes back and tweaks the chassis to his liking. Lethal weapon I'd say, may sound man crushy but I'd aspire to be like Jim Mero
Is the Stig driving lol great driver mad skills hats off to him
Good driving.
Sure as hell could have done without the commentary.
I'm trying this on Assetto Corsa. I'm currently on a 7min 25 but I'm hitting almost 200mph on the straights. Just goes to show how talented the driver is.
Been running it on Forza motorsport for a while. Barely broke 7:40's. Incredible what these drivers do in real life. Some absolute cubes down below.
Yah, because foreign made videogames are tooootally going to be honest about an American car's power...
And I know, Forza is 'Microsoft.' If you think Microsoft is pro-American...damn, you don't pay attention.
Edit: If it makes you feel better, Porsche made a statement with the times of the Z06 and GTR, claiming they were fake times. So Porsche bought a GTR and Z06, put their best driver behind the wheel and tested them. They came back saying, "The GTR's times are fake!" I bet they got even better times with the Z06 with a professional driver...
This was over a decade ago. Imagine how much tire technology has advanced since then
@zr1vetteman09 He doesn't race for a living but he does have a lot of racing experience. And he helps design the chassis so he knows the cars very well.
great lap cant wait till the 2015 z07 runs that track
+Karo Karchyan 7:03 my man. I got it official. The 6:59 rumor was not true. But 7:03 would still be the record. By far.
+vin russo any vid of it?
+vin russo WHERE IS THE PROOF?! VIDEO!?
+vin russo Have heard of very impressive times but can't find any video proof of it. I damn sure hope whoever owns "The Ring" will drop the limits for manufacturers when doing test runs. It's obvious that I'm more pro Vette however I love seeing all other cars stepping up their games to push the limits with HP & TQ when we have hater ass bureaucrats that only want us to drive electric slow turds bc they "don't pollute!!" WTFE!!!....People say the 60's muscle car era was the greatest....haha yeah OK! I own two muscle cars and I love them but the stuff that is coming out today is just stupid nasty!! We as gear heads need to stick together and keep those politicians from killing our hobby based on BS global warming lies.
The LS9 pulls and pulls and pulllllllssss..... 😍
I'd love to know what the C8's are doing now... Great run!
I'm saying, I used to have a 2005 WRX STI, it came with the Potenza on it OE. They were almost slicks and although they where decent, I replaced them with a set of Michelin all season tires and the all seasons actually had better traction in the dry/wet and better grip in the turns with less resistance.. Bridgestone fails at making tires, that's why a good set of Michelins cost 270-380 while a set of bridgestone Potenza's cost around 178 bucks. There's a huge gap in between as far as performance
Damn that thing pulled a 1.6g turn.
1.8 is the highest I've seen replaying the video. Fucking nuts
great car
This man has balls of steel! Badass car, yes it could be lapped faster in more sophisticated cars, but nothing this bare and basic comes even close.
Beat the shit out of the $500,000 Ford.
6:53 so this entire time he had his window down? This had to effect the drag and as a result slow down the time of the car
7:20, I bet that was shit scary
Thats exactly what i was thinking! hell of a turn
I was wondering why he didn't shift up and then I realized he kept the motor spinning high so he go wide open throttle exiting that corner at 180mph so the acceleration would suck the car back up to the road, keeping the rear end from walking on him. That's not something you can usually do in a Corvette without the rear tires losing friction but, going 180mph, it certainly lowers the chance of torque ruining your day. You can see multiple times though, as he exits various corners, the rear end slightly kicks out, causing him to lift. It's like a bull he's trying to tame but it keeps trying to buck him off.
Favorite track and one of my favorite cars. This video really shows how brutal Nurburgring is.
Yeah it does
not as scary as watching the ruf yellowbird test driver taking that turn in it's legendary nurburgring laps. I'm not trying to take anything away from this video, this was great and I love the ZR1, but speaking strictly of absolutely terrifying moments the yellowbird's laps are incomprehensible that the driver isn't dead with all the insane things he's doing, and doing it all in casual clothes for some reason.
TheGoodChap Yeah that was pretty crazy as well
7:19 look at this thing, I love how he lifts, car gets loose, then laid right back on the gas to blast himself out the corner like a fuckin rocket on rails!
G forces were constantly up at 1g. This guy drove the SHIT out of that corvette. He even refrained from going into 6th gear on the straight because he was bouncing around so much. Quite a driving show
Im wondering how much better, if any, would the 2024 model would do?
I always wondered why he shifted to 6 th on the other speed run ? The car was struggling to reach 178 when it can clearly do 190+ in 5 th...
Also, let's not forget the Pirelli P-Zero, I'm currently running those on my Corvette and they are awesome. Guess who makes Pirelli? Michelin.
Jim has a dream job.
Thisssssss is a real driver!!!! This guy is nooooooo joke! I don’t respect 90 percent of pro drivers. This guy is elite.
There are actually a lot of road courses in the US... maybe not as many as Europe, but still quite a few.
It's lime an unbeatable 630 hp monster..
638*
@bimmen325 ..The latest 2013 model Nissan GTR has posted a time of 7 min 16.02 on first testing at the Nurburgring
Oh. My. God.
I want one so bad
yea just saying... the nissan gtr was in the damp... im pretty sure that makes a difference on a track with 147 corners?
I respect american cars... But this one, this one is the only one i really like! :D
The Z06 with the Z07 option is faster around the nurburgring and cost 15k less than the GTR. The Black model is even more expensive. The Nismo GTR will be an exciting machine, but will also have to deal with the C7 Vette and the performance variants it spawns. Plus, the '08 Viper ACR Lapped in 7m12s, the fastest production car lap so far. The 2011 ACR with 650hp would likely be faster. The next gen Viper will also have an ACR variant. It's an exciting time for cars!
Americans and Brits. Hitting everyone else with mph since forever. Please never change.
when he hits that straight way holy shit that car is screamin
how much weight is lost from removing the normal seats?
È um sonho. Para mim é um sonho.
183mph....impressed
Favorite Corvette ever made. Wish this video wasn't plagued with chatter lol
'Except no one else drives like Jim' - Does that blurb come in the brochure?
He was pulling 1.9G on some of those corners! 😮
@laaloboyzwestside Its not the only supercar that's supercharged though. Koenigsegg has used two on the same engine before. I don't think the supercharger is an equal advantage over the stripped out viper with similar horsepower.
