This was a repair we were doing for someone else. We no longer have the tiller around to get the numbers off of it. Thanks for watching, I hope the videos are still useful in some way.

THANK YOU guys, for posting this. I've got the same machine here in my shop, and wasn't sure how it came apart once it was down to the transmission case. You've saved me a ton of headaches and frustration. Heaven forbid the manufacturer would provide their service centres with the manuals to repair their products.

Good Lord. I had a heckuva time finding part 2. Not sure why RUclips doesn't keep them in order.
Anyway, appreciate the breakdown on this. I'm pretty sure I will have to do the same.
    Thanks much

This helped me very much thanks for taking the Time to share. Just sprayed shifting shaft heated with a touch and did not have to split the case but you opening it up for all of us was great thanks again

I love it when you have to totally tear something apart, for what turns out to be a fairly simple fix. But if you like taking things apart and seeing how they work, this would be a great project.

I have the exact same machine with the same problem. After watching your video and seeing that the problem was just the shifter shaft frozen to the bushing I just hit it with some WD40 and let it soak in. I then gave it a tap with the hammer and problem was solved. I never would have tried that had I not seen your video, thanks.

Thanx for this video, now I know why the mechanic down at Sears tried to sell me a new transmission. looks simple enough, just be patient. My shifter is locked up also, so now i know how to fix it. Thanks again.

@pearsonba350 It's always interesting to see what's inside. I guess it's better that we didn't find a bunch of chewed up gears inside.

I've been working on a Crapman 7hp 17" rear tine tiller, basically the same gear box but the final drive gear/sprocket combo is a little different. Started as a carb rebuild, ended up as a near 100% disassembly to fix a broken #35 wheel drive chain.
It got really fun when I realized that someone had dropped some limestone gravel in the case and some of it got ground into little pieces and distributed through the entire gearbox and I had to take out every single thing in the gearbox and clean it all up. I now have about 10 hours in it and just got the case put back together. If it breaks again I think I will just push it out into the highway

I like your video. Was looking for one on a Troy Bilt but I like how you explain what is going on plus I like how you respond to people who post here. I don't need to rebuild my tiller but it's always good to have the info on hand ahead of time in case you ever need it.

I have one of these apart right now and I have it completely dissembled. The small chain broke and the slider was sticking a bit so I ordered a couple parts to cleaned up all the old grease due to it being contaminated with water.
Now it's figuring out how all this stuff goes back together lol!

Same problem of the shifting lever rusted fast and not wanting to rotate. I oiled it and letting it soak through before trying to free it. Ball and spring in the block this shifter lifts seems okay. Ordered a new gasket and I'll strip all parts of old grease/clean and re-grease/ and re-assemble after I figure out where the gears and cogs go. But I'll install several grease fittings in the case walls before I re-assemble, and I intend to use thick, black exterior paint to help further seal the joint because the original gasket allowed water to get in. Thanks for the vid

It’s not the gasket, water gets in around the shift rod. Use RV blue or grey instead of or in addition to the gasket. You don’t need more grease fittings. Assemble it with one full tube pumped over all the gears and chains. Then once a month pump a shot into the existing fitting. Use good grease- hi-tack type. A seal or boot at the shift rod would keep water out, but store it inside regardless.

Thanks for making this video. I have a 79 Snapper IR 4000 and it has trouble going into gear. It looks like its a similar setup with the shifter fork. It helped me narrow down whats wrong with it.

Tines are always on on my Gilson rear tine tiller. Wheel drive is on a separate gear case. Interesting how different designs accomplish the same task.

Well done. I like seeing what I am going to find inside. Looks exactly like mine: 5hp Rear Tine Hard to believe that the sifter wasn't stuck on something else. Rust welded? Rust welded? I put a lot of pressure on it both ways. Tapping on it maybe, or spraying some rust blaster?
Wow taking it all apart . . .
    ouch.
Again nicely done (video wise) and mechanically apart and back together. David

Thank you 🙏 for taking the time to share your Videos about this Rear Tine Rototiller. Did you by any chance Replace any of the Needle Bearings that goes inside of the Gear ⚙️? I purchased a used model Exactly the same as your Rototiller. I did Everything that you and your Bud Wally did Down to a Tee. When I noticed broken Needle Bearings that came out of a Gear ⚙️. I’m waiting on replacement parts now as we speak. Fingers are crossed 🤞. Thanks again for your videos. Hopefully your Rototiller is up and running.

I'm considering doing this same job on a western auto/AYP/Electrolux 8hp tiller I bought for $50 because it had a nearly new B&S engine that would fit on my old gilson 8hp/5 speed beast with a dusted motor. I'm thinking this tiller may be worth salvaging though. Seems like the shifting fork is the weak spot, is the replacement part improved over the original? I am considering making one out of 4140 if the replacements are still fragile.

    • @vclubamp
      @vclubamp 6 лет назад +1

I am seriously considering doing just that...machining one out of better steel, 4140 or maybe 17-4 stainless, whatever I have scraps big enough for, and make it more lube friendly. Looks like it may need some kind of felt seal with a cap over it to keep the water out...mine will stay in the shed, but still....just thinking.

Those are bargains if you don't mind fixing them. Our push mower cost 5 bucks in non running condition with the carb in a box. Looked like it was a fairly new model. Cleaned the carb and bought an air filter. Ran like new.

I didn't realize the cases were lubed with grease from the factory, but I Guess oil would leak right out. Did you buy that grease by the bucket or how many tubes did you spread around, and what kind of grease?

I had to split mine for a broken chain. My brother in law gave it to us because he had already had it break two chains and he refused to do it a third time. He believes it breaks the chain because the tine "shear" pins are too hard to actually shear. I have replaced them with grade two bolts to see if this helps it not break another chain. Time will tell.

    • @brucea550

You have to remove the tines. You have to remove everything that isn’t the actual case, basically. Then get the case on a bench and open it up.

Ok guys I know this is an old video but thought I might pass along some info for those looking like me and my repair. In most cases it won't shift due to the ball bearing, and spring being rusted. Even though the case has a gasket it's useless to keep out water. When I took apart mine "given to me" it was full of water, and sludge I mean full. Always order all the needle bearings when splitting the cases. Don't want to have to open her again. JMO.
