  • This time we go further into this tiller and try to solve the issue of it not rolling. Bring some gloves because it is getting greasy.

    A few things: When you take it apart keep the deep side down and remove the thinner side. 2nd, it's a pita so take everything out and clean/inspect it all - not something you want to repeat often. The needle bearings go out on these. Replace them all. Don't lose any washers - I can't find the thin ones anywhere. The ball bearing in the shifter goes bad inspect and or replace. I agree- silicone everything on the top side to keep water out. I used about 4 lbs of lubriplate grease 01 to regressed - basically filled the bottom half of the case. On the opposite side of the gear spindle pack the hole with #2 grease to keep water and dirt away from the needle bearing. Lastly never ever wash this thing. Water always finds a way in. Use the tiller when it's not muddy and not super dusty - it'll last longer that way

    Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have this same tiller. It has started on the first pull every year for 20 years. Now I know how to take it apart to fix it. I believe the bearings for the tine shaft are worn. Wish me luck. Thanks again

    Dude was getting rid of one of these today but it’s gray not green. Not sure if it runs but wasn’t locked up and wheels spin freely. I figure I’ll tinker with it and try to make a little cash. Nice video bud

    Ok, loved these two videos. I have the same tiller. Transmission went under warranty and was replaced. It has gone again and acts the same as yours. Will not move but tines will.
    Hopefully it won't be too much problem to fix.

    Great job on your videos Timothy. Too many folks waste a lot of time talking and showing long boring steps. Your video moved along nicely and I watch both parts. I got the same tiller when I bought my house last fall, (it was left behind). Starts, but stuck in nuetral. Tore it down to the frame/trany yesterday. I'll crack it open today with more confidence thanks to you.

I like watching videos about the things I own though because I also will try to fix myself. I'm going to take the Carburetor off now and clean it because he ran ethenol gas in it and it surge's. Thanks again GREAT JOB.

    Working on mine now. Rebuilding the gear case is better done in the other case half as the larger gears will drop in first and not hide the complete mechanism when all the parts are back in. It's easier to test too because the shifter is in the other half. Have to admit, no matter what you do or how you do it , it's one big hemorrhoid!! Good luck to anyone who's attempting it.

    Timothy DC... I'd recommend to use Emory cloth to clean up the shafts for both wheels. The wheels should slide on the shaft without needing the use of a beating tool (Hammer). I'd flush out fuel system, install new carburetor, fuel supply line with clamp. The hunting of the engine can be adjusted to run smoother.

    I think we both had that relieved look on our faces when it started and the tines started rotating correctly. Whew... great job. Idk how you did all that work without cussing at least a few times. Or maybe those got edited out...lol fyi,I've found out that owning a tiller is like owning a pick-up truck, friends want to borrow it for their landscape project, like they call you to help them move. Anyways thanks for sharing and stay safe out there...

    These tillers are a nightmare to work on. The tine drive chain (#50 - 25 links) will stretch out and slip after hard usage. I would replace both chains just to save you time in the future. while you have the case cracked.

    These tillers can be serviced, but we’re not meant to be serviced. Splitting the case and taking it completely apart, to say replace tine bearings, is not a serviceable unit. $400 plus dollars for a $700 tiller.

    If there's anyone in the future who is wondering if their Husqvarna 700DRT tiller is the same as this craftsman, it basically is. The gear selector is a common problem with those, I have mine tore apart right now. And the main gasket will tear just as soon as look at it

    do you even have to take the wheels off to open up the gear box? I have that exact tiller. my shifter is stuck. Wheels turn freely.

    • @monkeywrench2800
      @monkeywrench2800 3 года назад

      Yes, wheels and tines must be removed to open the case. The shifter issue is most likely a rusted input shaft, where it passes thru the case.

    That fuel fitting on the carb can be replaced. No need to replace the carb. Check out Taryl Fixes All channel. He has a video that shows how to replace those fittings on both Briggs and Tecumseh carbs. It’s not any harder than the work you’ve done so far.

    Tim, I have an older Craftsman Rear tine. All works fine except when you start to till. It tills a minute or so the the tines stop turning. You can still drive it around but; the tines won't start again till you stop and reengage the dead-man handle. Then it digs for a minute or so...then the tines stop again. Any thoughts? I don't have any history on this I just bought this 2nd hand from a guy who fixes and sells.

    • @ASliceofWoodWorkshop
      @ASliceofWoodWorkshop  3 года назад

      Does it bog down or anything? Will it do it if you lift the tines off the ground and till with nothing under it?

    • @garryweller7819
      @garryweller7819 3 года назад +1

      No it doesn't bog down but I think I found out sort of what's going on. As I was messing with it today I happened to notice that the gear shift selector was moving to a position partly between T and F...there by knocking the tines out. I could see that the cotter pin was touching the fly wheel that the belt runs on. I reposition the pin and I may have solved the problem. Thanks for responding so quick. Garry

      The handle goes to the belt that drives all the pulleys. The tilt forward neutral and reverse should have a rod that connects to the transmission shifter and the fast/stop has a cable that goes to the right side of the motor on the throttle control. Does that help at all?
