The whole point of the bridge operator is to prevent this from happening, their job includes using their eyes to look for people or cars on the bridge. It is literally in the job description. That old lady probably had hearing problems at her age and what about people with earbuds in, they may not hear the alarm. There is no way the old lady past the gate and walked with her bike far enough on the bridge to drop 50 feet to her death when it went up, she was well on it when the alarm sounded if it did at all.

I want out of this place so bad….it’s horrible down here due to the people. Okay want out….just trying to figure how to get enough money to do so because jobs here and n south Florida pay horribly.
why are people now all of a sudden getting stuck on bridges? this wasnt a problem before... before a week ago people paid attention to lights and warning bells. That man thought he had time.
It's not sudden. One case got attention and now past incidents are getting attention, too. This case and the one with the car happened before the incident where that woman fell.
At this point, having had so many of these happen so close together, one has to wonder if they aren’t going out there on purpose so they can sue someone. Wth. How many is this now? That man could have walked down 4 feet. He’s TRYING to stay on it…and then had enough power in himself to call 911 himself.
The audio and video are not sync'd. It's obvious he called them from the ground, he even said as much on the call. Try listening and using some common sense.
What a lot of people don't realize too, it's not just a 10-15' drop to the ground. There's a couple foot gap between the stationary portion of the bridge and the elevated section, this leads to a pit that could be another 30-40' down from where you see.
Not the point. People like you don't see the bigger picture. It's the final responsibility of the bridge operator to check it's clear. If someone had passed out on the bridge, if an old person had fallen down and knocked themselves unconscious or just couldn't move, if a car had broken down and couldn't move, if a child was unaware of the rules. There are too many scenarios where you can't give sole responsibility to the person on the bridge. The operator is there for a reason, because sometimes occurrences like this DO happen and the bridge can't just automatically open, the operator's literal job is to check before opening, otherwise they would just have it automatically open.
Low key, I am a very mellow guy and I would probably react the same way, which makes me not suspicious of him, to be honest. My mindset would be like “Oh okay, of course this is happening to me.”
Drawbridge accidents are actually common. A few happen every year. You have a total of two minutes. There's a warning bell, one minute later, the gate goes down, visual inspection, one minute later the bridge goes up. That's the procedure. So if you're in the middle of a bridge, you have two minutes to make it to the other end of the bridge. I don't think that's a lot of time. Worst part is, that's not even what's happening. They're not following procedure, they're skipping the visual inspection.
This cannot keep happening. I'm thinking the last 2 incidents the people had time to move. Also, why haven't they put up more signals warnings before the drawbridge goes up? This is crazy.
Is it possible that motorist, cyclists and pedestrians ignore the warning lights and barricades and go around them just to have this happen? It’s no different than when a car goes around the railroad crossing arms then gets t-boned by a freight train!
The train doesn’t have to wait for the railroad crossing tender to check the street and push their button before crossing the street. Also, the bicycle barricades on bridges usually cover the entire available area which would require you to climb over it with your bicycle. It’s not exactly just going around.
I’ve seen people purposely run when the bridge was going up to try and make it because they don’t want to wait. You see it with trains and crossing bars they think they have time and they don’t. It’s not always the controllers fault.
He probably retired, realized that his 401k funds are nowhere near enough, so he decided that he needed a payout quick. It's a lot harder with the cops now because they record everything but there's always draw-bridges and train crossings.
If the bicyclist ignored the warnings, it was their own fault. It was also the fault of the driver who literally stopped their car on the bridge as it was rising.
"Never heard the warning bells"...So he most likely had headphones on. The bridge operators have to be more cautious, but the cyclist here, and the driver in the other video also share blame. Situational awareness is all our responsibility, not just one person. Its not like these bridges rise at lightning speed.
Unless there was equipment malfunction. There should be a full investigation and not simply point fingers without all the details. You don't think bells can malfunction?
@@joemann7971 There are probably flashing red lights and/or light up warning signs as well. The brides I've seen these, like the bells, operate long enough for cars to clear the bridge before the gates close. It might be necessary for bridge operators to check for slower traffic like pedestrians or bicyclists before closing the gates and raising the bridge.
@@robertvirginiabeach I imagine cars can cross quickly but it doesn't make sense why both the car and the cyclist pretty much were on the bridge just before it started to close. Like, why did the tender close the gate? It's pretty obvious that the car stopped because the gate was down. As far as why he stopped on the pivot point, I have no clue. I'm guessing he thought it was safe to stop there for whatever reason, but honestly, the bridge tender should have left the gate open until the car passed then closed it. It just seems to me like the tender didn't even know there was a car there and that's a big problem. If they are not seeing car, what luck does a pedestrian have? Seems they need to install motion detectors or something to have a safety net for the tenders to grab their attention. If it turns out to just be a bird, then they can override the detection, and so on.
Will an air raid siren move a broken down car? Will an air raid siren move someone that has fallen over and can't move? The operator needs to be aware of what is on the bridge before they raise it. It's why their job exists and the bridges don't automatically raise.
Because the bridge doesn't hinge at road level. A gap immediately appears between the separation plates when the bridge starts to open. In some cases the end plate on the moving part of a draw-bridge drops below the level of the road depending on where the rotor hinge system is on the cantilever span as shown in the footage of the car incident. If a cyclist or pedestrian tried to get off the cantilever while in motion they could be severely injured or fall to their death. The cyclist footage appears to show the footpath end section raising above road level thus he would have had only a few seconds to get off with minimal to no injury if he tried fast enough.
@@EzeePosseTV - "he would have had only a few seconds to get off with minimal to no injury..." Exactly what I suggested; if he responds quickly and hurries, it would literally have taken him 2-3 seconds to just get to the bottom as it started from where he was at the beginning of the clip.
When he was near the bottom and it wasn’t extremely steep at that point, he should have been able to lower himself off. Im not excusing the operator but he panicked instead of just riding off before it was so steep.

I live in Hampton roads area of Virginia. We have more than our share of draw bridges. And can easily get stuck at a couple lifts at different bridges on the same trip. There are ample warnings before the bridges lift. Usually a very loud bell( like at rail crossing we have a few of them too) , a couple sets of arms and traffic lights. The bicyclists was just inside the arm. How did he call( calmly) and still hold on to the railing at the same time? I'm sure there are incompetent bridge tenders. But, the bike and the van( that stopped at the edge) were either very unlucky, trying to beat the lift or purposely looking for a payday.

He was going down and almost exiting, so the operator is at fault. From the way the bridge is opening, it is most probable that the bridge was going up while he was already riding on it. If he had on earphones, he could have not heard the sound. Some people are deaf so, it is the bridge operator to make sure the bridge is truly clear.
@@bmshaven they should start fining people who cross the arms as long as the evidence shows there was plenty of time for them to see and know what was going on but decide to cross anyway

IDK if it's just me, but I like be safe in my surroundings so I move quickly through railroad crossings while staying vigilant and I get away from multiple cars driving in close proximity to other vehicles because I see the potential dangers guess these folks aren't doing that.
Things to evaluate are event logging ... Do we have cameras containing the bridge-tenders views -- do they USE video cameras for monitoring or do they just do visual 'out the window' checks? Are the audio alerts (bridge warning sounds) logged for start/end/duration on each use? How loud are the alerts?
I think the blame needs to go with the bicyclists cause they are clearly ignoring the gates and alarms. I used to ride my bike all over town when I was living on the west coast and we had draw bridges and when those gates cam down and alarms were sounding I didn't ignore them
I have dealed with a lot of draw bridges and the warnings lights and gates gives you plenty of time to stop and not enter and also these draw bridges don't raise all that fast and mostly likely giving you time to get back of the thing. How can the bridge tender not have seen the man unless it was good ole texting time on the phone.
For what? Deaf and dumb people? There's barricades with flashing lights and big loud sirens going off. You can pay for the extras guards if you'd like but leave that off my tax bill. I'm all for weeding idiots out of society.
This was clearly done purposely. At 0:38 you can see he wasn’t even that far from the street and that red stop light he stopped can’t be more bright. Even his tone with the operator was too chill. Honestly he should get a fine for passing under the red stop light.
One question I have for that Honda driver is why did you stop? The bicycle 🚴 beside him managed to get across, clearly he could have driven across safely but he stopped. looks like these people are looking for a lawsuit and hopefully some settlement. SMH You caused that woman her job for nothing. Shame on you
Regardless of the fact whoever is operating the bridge should look at the cameras if there are any to see if anyone is or on the bridge to prevent this from happening
I'd like to see a video that shows when the alarms started vs. when they got in bridge. These could just be like when people try to unsuccessfully beat a train. Also, now a days there is a large amount of un-attentive drivers all checking FB while driving.
Difference is that the train engineer cannot stop a train once the obstruction is spotted. A bridge operator, though, can halt or reverse the opening process in order to prevent a dangerous situation. Which brings us back to the *_you had one job_* point.
In the video about the lady falling to her death they said most bridges in Florida operate the same way… you push a button to raise the bridge but there is a 2 minute window of the bells ringing before the bridge actually opens. They said you can’t raise the bridge without the alarms going off first.
I don't feel bad for anyone who finds themselves in these situations. It's really not hard at all to avoid being on the bridge when it's going up. What ever happens to them happens.
Put cameras in the booth, I want to see exactly how good these operators are looking for people! If they don’t even look fired! Don’t look good fired! Don’t look the whole time fired! You have one job to make sure that the bridge opens and closes without hurting people or damaging property!
It’s amazing seeing that one thing gets media attention nowadays and more cases come out like “yeah this been going on for a while “ I wonder what’s coming next what else will grab our attention
Everyone talking about how sus the biker is but I love how the guy in the car waited patiently to shoot his lil video before "assisting the bicyclist" I mean, putting all things aside he was relatively close to the road itself (the part that doesn't move), at the very least I would think if he had genuine interest in helping him he'd go and at least try to save him
Could be both the guy recording and the biker are friend plotting to get a paycheck. Notice they didn't record the whole thing so we can see if the warning arms and sound was active or not. The video starts when the bridge is already going up. I wanna see if the guy just stood at the bridge on purpose and waited for it to go up.
It's all about recording now, and helping later.....don't get it....I would have been rushing over there to help, not even thinking about recording anything.....
The need to start putting *sensors* that can detect large objects on the bridge and accordingly don't open the bridge unless that object moves off from the bridge.
I thought for some reason the algorithm was just recommending a lot of drawbridge videos for some reason until I realized that this keeps happening recently.
You have 60 seconds of warning. If you are already on the bridge and it’s windy, a bicyclist isn’t necessarily going to hear the sound. The car driver, I agree that seemed intentional but why raise the bridge if you can see a car out there. There is an emergency stop
The two cyclists that got caught on bridge were 59, this guy, and 79, the woman who died. I don’t think it’s intentional. In a car you’re not gonna die. On foot or a bike, without enough upper body strength death is a really likely outcome. Certainly the 79 year old walking her bike across did not do this intentionally at all. Doubt this guy did either.
It takes about ten seconds for the bridge to raise up to have him over 5' off the ground plus the distance below the bridge. It takes about 30 seconds for the bridge to be at full height. If you think he could have just "turned around and walked down" then maybe you should stand on a ladder at 5' with concrete below you and just jump off and see how you would do.
By the looks of it he could have EASILY gotten onto the end of the bridge before the gap got too big. He had so much time to go that little distance. I am confused how he got stuck...
Omg…. Why is this constantly happening? It’s become a daily thing!! Wake up people! These people might form out of state & are not use to these type of bridges?

In regards the car stopping on the bridge, the gates and signal lights are just ahead of the car. The gates would have been down closing off both lanes and the signals red when he came to a stop and the driver probably didn't realize that he was still partially on the portion of the bridge that raised. If he had stopped ten feet further he would have been safe, but the point is that the bridge operator in the house right there should not have opened the bridge until it was fully clear of traffic.

There's a video on here that shows the bridge rising on just a normal day. Here's how the bridge operates. The alarm bells ring for 45 seconds with lights flashing, then the pedestrian gates close with another 15 seconds of alarm bells. Then a safety check is done and then it rises like 45 seconds later. Each rising span is around 100 feet.
The man had enough time to step back and he sounded to calm in that phone call for an "unexpected" situation, he was looking to sue. The car as well, why did they stop on that specific line on the bridge like that, if my safety was on the line I would barge around or through the barriers. They were looking to sue too. It's not sudden. One case got attention and now past incidents are getting attention, too. This case and the one with the car happened before the incident where that woman fell.
I’ve seen like 20 of these videos here lately, I was wondering the same thing😂
Earbuds block out sounds.

At this point, having had so many of these happen so close together, one has to wonder if they aren’t going out there on purpose so they can sue someone. Wth. How many is this now?
That man could have walked down 4 feet. He’s TRYING to stay on it…and then had enough power in himself to call 911 himself.

@themonkeyhand
So after he got down he called the cops to confess he is an incredibly stupid human being? 😂
Even if he was trying - you don’t raise the bridge until the span is cleared.
Why his face blurred. Why not just climb down
What a lot of people don't realize too, it's not just a 10-15' drop to the ground. There's a couple foot gap between the stationary portion of the bridge and the elevated section, this leads to a pit that could be another 30-40' down from where you see.
I would have loved to see that ending…..these people are F’ING STUPID……..
Again, just like the guy in the car, the biker was within feet of being clear. Why did he stop right there?
Looks like another fraudulent lawsuit attempt.
Car stopped because of the warning gate
@@PapeySapote The warning gate isn’t at the edge of the bridge. The driver could’ve totally driven past the threshold and been fine.
He was an older man. Who knows? It’s mostly old people getting killed in these incidents. Their senses definitely aren’t as sharp as a 20-year old’s…
This dude sounds real calm and collected for an unplanned event....
Yeah right. He was probably waiting his whole life to do that.
Exactly. Looking for a payout.
Low key, I am a very mellow guy and I would probably react the same way, which makes me not suspicious of him, to be honest. My mindset would be like “Oh okay, of course this is happening to me.”
Exactly... From what i see he had plenty of time to turn around. Just someone else looking for a easy pay day....
Being calm is most likely what saved his life.
So he had a total of 2 minutes to walk 4' . Got it.
This cannot keep happening. I'm thinking the last 2 incidents the people had time to move. Also, why haven't they put up more signals warnings before the drawbridge goes up? This is crazy.
We're suspecting blatant ignoring of the gates. Doubt those will work.
i know damn well this dude did this on purpose to cash a check lmao
@Isis Smith i cant ask dead people

Is it possible that motorist, cyclists and pedestrians ignore the warning lights and barricades and go around them just to have this happen? It’s no different than when a car goes around the railroad crossing arms then gets t-boned by a freight train!
I think the video that showed the Motorist could have kept driving more. but seemed to just stop all of a sudden.
That’s one safety barrier. The final safeguard is the bridge tender doing a visual inspection before opening the span.
@@ChakatNightspark , the motorist stopped there on purpose...
They could lower the bridge back down when they see them....
The train doesn’t have to wait for the railroad crossing tender to check the street and push their button before crossing the street. Also, the bicycle barricades on bridges usually cover the entire available area which would require you to climb over it with your bicycle. It’s not exactly just going around.
Honestly the guy had so much time to just run down the Bridge.
I’ve seen people purposely run when the bridge was going up to try and make it because they don’t want to wait. You see it with trains and crossing bars they think they have time and they don’t. It’s not always the controllers fault.
This is like the third or fourth incident like this in a matter of days. Something is up with the controllers
The controller is supposed to be watching for things like this. There is no excuse for continuing to raise the bridge with someone on it.
Why exactly did he stay on the bridge when it started moving? He's maybe 10 feet from the base.
Lol…I thought so too…
He probably retired, realized that his 401k funds are nowhere near enough, so he decided that he needed a payout quick. It's a lot harder with the cops now because they record everything but there's always draw-bridges and train crossings.
When I read this story.
I thought he was In the middle, holding at the top.
I think a gap opens up. Certainly, the bike found one.
Because this is staged.

He didn’t hear the warning bells. I wonder if earpods had anything to do with that?
At this point, forget about the "warning bell", an "air raid siren" will do the trick 😉
Specifically the historical V8 Chrysler Air Raid Siren for just those extra decibels that can be heard 30 miles away.
Will an air raid siren move a broken down car? Will an air raid siren move someone that has fallen over and can't move? The operator needs to be aware of what is on the bridge before they raise it. It's why their job exists and the bridges don't automatically raise.
He was 5 feet from the end… I don’t understand why he didn’t finish crossing before the angle got too steep.
Exactly. When the video starts you could easily just trot down the incline in 2 seconds and be on your way.
He wanted to make the news🤣
Because the bridge doesn't hinge at road level. A gap immediately appears between the separation plates when the bridge starts to open. In some cases the end plate on the moving part of a draw-bridge drops below the level of the road depending on where the rotor hinge system is on the cantilever span as shown in the footage of the car incident. If a cyclist or pedestrian tried to get off the cantilever while in motion they could be severely injured or fall to their death. The cyclist footage appears to show the footpath end section raising above road level thus he would have had only a few seconds to get off with minimal to no injury if he tried fast enough.
@@EzeePosseTV - "he would have had only a few seconds to get off with minimal to no injury..."

The bicyclists was just inside the arm. How did he call( calmly) and still hold on to the railing at the same time? I'm sure there are incompetent bridge tenders. The two cyclists that got caught on bridge were 59, this guy, and 79, the woman who died. I don’t think it’s intentional. In a car you’re not gonna die. I am so thankful I don’t have to drive over any drawbridges, this is terrifying and happening way too often. Does anyone remember the bridge that collapsed in Minnesota years ago? That gave me the worst anxiety and made me scared to drive over bridges for awhile afterwards.
I agree that this is insane! But the one man was literally at the end of the bridge and could of easily walked off before it went all the way up. he was only like 5 feet from the ground if not less…fishing for a law-suite it’s obvious! the women though I really wish there was a video to see how far in she was..
when the bridge opens, there will be a gaping crack straight down to the ocean, no one will dare to jump to walk to the safety point, because if you fell, you gonna fell hundred of feet down to the ocean, the impact alone can kill you, which is what happened to that 75 yr old woman. So at the point, your best bet is to grab onto anything and don't let it go. Also, do you really think that man was willing to take the risk of plummet hundreds feet down into the ocean for money?
@Xyrius D Wtf do you mean? You're blind. Do you even know how a bridge like that works? You must live in a small village. Lol. You said he's "fishing for a law suite". Project much? At least we know where your mind's at.
@@1w598 wtf do you mean? The bridge doesn’t open instantaneously.
@@Commander_HW not when it just starts going up and not all bridges are hundreds of feet in the air. You’re describing the worst case scenario were your literally in the center of it when it starts going up. A lot of these people had almost completed the bridge before they stop for some reason. Also don’t underestimate what someone will do for some $$.
@@lawnmowerdude I LIVE IN MIAMI! This is a news FROM MIAMI. I know those bridges inside and out! Those bridges that opens up for the purpose of letting big boats pass by. In miami all those brides are hundreds of feet in the air.
Looks like he ignored the warnings and tried to skip through. This one is suspicious.
With today's technology, this is unacceptable. How awful for the older woman.
It’s their own fault
With today's knowledge it's unacceptable to blatantly ignore warning lights
Agreed; motion, optical and heat sensors are inexpensive enough that this should NEVER happen...focus the sensors on the pedestrian areas as people are harder to see at night than cars. Again, as the previous person said, with the technology today you could hook up a lockout switch system with raspberry pi's on the cheap (any school age child could google a fix over the weekend). In NO way should this happen.
In today’s times it’s impossible to except responsibility for your own actions
They said in another video that she was only 10ft from the end. Why didn't she hurry off the bridge? You must know that you have to listen for warnings and hurry across a bridge like that.
Sounds like a payday to me! How convenient to have someone recording for him.
I like how they say falls to his death while he is like 4 feet up lol
A large gap opens at the bend and it's about a 40-foot drop onto concrete.
@@phillipkalaveras1725 I get tired of having to explain this to people. If they were in this situation, they wouldn't think it was so simple. Studying bridge engineering or even looking at a bridge go up, you can see how dangerous it is to be stuck on one that is being drawn up.
WTF is going on here ?!? Bridges, Trains, Palm Beach County. Repetitive mistakes.
Haitians!
@@charlottehanna790 Racist.
Its not a mistake people ignore the bells to cross drawbridge and train tracks
I moved away from West Palm Beach in 2016. The thing I miss most is WPTV. Love you guys.
This is nonsense. Not only by his position he clearly had time to get off but is he also deaf and blind? Media doing anything to cause a stir when accountability is not pressed on that man.
None of that matters if you're looking for a payout and hire a scumbag attorney though.
I'm in my 50s and have NEVER heard of a person being on the bridge when it opened, now I have heard three Florida stories in the past few weeks.
The man had enough time to step back and he sounded to calm in that phone call for an "unexpected" situation, he was looking to sue. The car as well, why did they stop on that specific line on the bridge like that, if my safety was on the line I would barge around or through the barriers. They were looking to sue too. Enough is ENOUGH.
I also work with people who are older that have dementia, what happened to the older lady was an accident and my heart goes out to her because she was most likely not able to see or hear the warnings too clearly. But these people are NOT incapable of hearing sirens and seeing signs and barriers coming down.
That pedal pusher should be paying attention to his surroundings and take those earbuds out. They think the traffic laws don't apply to them for some reason.
FO ya gas guzzling driver.
Earbuds. Yes. Good point...... 👍
If the problem with cars trying to beat the train or stuck on the tracks hasn’t been fixed then this problem isn’t going to be fixed neither
The problem was that that particular car did that on purpose.
The bridges are owned by companies from abroad... Everything in the "United States" is For Sale: roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, water, prisons airports etc. (Executive Order 12803)
FINALLY! Drawbridge Operators UNITE!
You would think if he has time to call 911, he has time to pedal his bicycle.
