Pete is intelligent, articulate, well-educated and seems like an all-around good guy. I hope he stays in politics, no matter how disheartening and difficult it can be. We need people like him in government to counter all the crazy nitwits.

Maybe if you were one of the Americans caught up in the five bridge collapses, or on his donor Boeing's airplanes when it fell apart midflight? He's the transportation secretary who presided over the most bridge-collapses-per-year in US history, and the media wants to do puff pieces on him instead of investigative journalism. We have a State-Run Press... all that's left is to be a one-party state. For example, the USA's closest ally, Britain, arrested 3,300 people for social media out of 66 million in PEACETIME, meanwhile Russia during it's WARTIME only arrested 400 people for social media posts (again, during WARTIME) and Russia has nearly triple the population of Britain (so Britain arrests about 25x more people per capita for their social media posts/free speech). The USA is only protected because it still has a majority supreme court that favors free speech but that might not last much longer...

As mayor: Buttigieg's signature program was the "Vacant and Abandoned Properties Initiative". Known locally as 1,000 Properties in 1,000 Days, it was a project to repair or demolish blighted properties across South Bend. The program reached its goal two months before its scheduled end date in November 2015. In early 2015, after traffic studies and public hearings, Pete secured a bond issue for the Smart Streets program, which aimed at improving economic development and urban vibrancy as well as road safety. The project was credited with spurring private development in the city. Under Buttigieg, South Bend invested $50 million in the city's parks, many of which had been neglected during the preceding decades.
As Sec. of Transportation: Pete reinstated an Obama-era pilot program which ensures local hiring for public works projects on May 19, 2021, with the goal of helping minorities and disadvantaged individuals. This program had been revoked in 2017 during the Trump administration. In late June 2022, Buttigieg launched a $1 billion Reconnecting Communities pilot program to establish racial equity in roads. Using money from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the program aims to reconnect cities and neighborhoods divided by roads through projects such as rapid bus lines, pedestrian walkways, and planning studies. Last year, the DOT imposed a record fine of $140 million on Southwest Airlines for mass violations of consumer protection laws in 2022 when the company cancelled flights and left more than 2 million passengers stranded.
Furthermore, Buttigieg had the integrity and character to admit on national TV that he got it wrong with the train derailment and should have visited East Palestine sooner. (I have yet to hear DJT admit he's wrong about anything. His administration scrapped a previous rail braking regulation.)

I started my journey as a single, male parent almost 16 years ago. The going wasn't always easy; at times, downright difficult, heartbreaking. I adopted from foster care. There were days prior to my son's initial placement where all hopes were dashed. Then once 'the' call was made to set up the initial weekend visit, all the pieces fell into place. My son has been with me ever since.

@@michelez715 President Obama had a few things apart from his oratory that worked for him: heterosexual male, married with children, young generation who became fed up with the past 8 years, fanny mae, 2008 recession. Also, I believe the fact that he had a white mother made him a little palatable to some conservative white voters. But if you look at how America has changed since Trump became President, we are actually going more inward in some ways. Abortion rights being attacked and I wouldn't be surprised if marriage equality is next. I would like to see him become President, because he is more than qualified, but sex obsessed America will be too concerned with his personal life.

My boy got RSV at 6 months of age, 21 years ago. Terrifying. He made a full recovery.
My son got RSV at nine weeks old and it was terrifying. We ended up in the ER because he was working too hard to breath. He also made a full recovery and is now a healthy 3 year old.

I have to say, I may not agree with Pete’s politics but to be honest seeing him with his family makes me look at him in a different light. If that makes sense. I don’t know to me it makes me feel like they aren’t just their job, that he is like everyone else that is raising kids. The press working hand in hand to write soft puff pieces rather than do investigative journalism, like say asking Pete Buttigieg why our infrastructure is falling apart. It'd actually be more surprising if this collaboration between media and government to promote their politicians failed to work on anyone. Sadly, propaganda works now just as it did in the 40's.
As a gay man...we also have to have some grace and be understanding that everyone is at their own pace in Life. And even more so this speaks to "representation matters." The commenter said he saw them in a new light and understanding and is that not what we want is to see people grow? We have to acknowledge that it took time to even each of us to accept our own truth so we cannot snap at folks who have a moment of epiphany. This is something to be said to someone congratulation to see difference but also have a deeper respect for someone and understanding. Buttigieg must be given credit for assuming his demanding position with a dignified equanimity. We must assume that he receives the full spectrum of public attention: 1) those who see him as someone who wants to fulfill the responsibilities of his Cabinet position effectively and 2) those who see him primarily as a gay man who they will never accept because of his sexual orientation. @@selfself8813 Buttigieg is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Oxford, attending the latter on a Rhodes Scholarship. (You gotta be smart to get one of those.) From 2009 to 2017, he was an intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve, attaining the rank of lieutenant. He was mobilized and deployed to the War in Afghanistan for seven months in 2014. Is there something in your own resume that can match any of that?

Pete and Chasten are a strong, loving, committed, tender couple who are raising two beautiful children with the same strength, love, commitment, and tenderness. I love seeing what devoted, smart parents they are. Gus and Penelope are blessed to be the children of Chasten and Pete, and I wish for them to have a wonderful life. Pete is also a very humble man who is always sharing the praise and opportunities he receives, too. For example, Pete is usually offered an upgrade to first class when he flies-which is at least once a week. He never, ever takes that upgrade, and instead he gives it to the most junior person in his group.
There are people in the comments who figure they should only judge Pete from a bigoted point of view because of his orientation and family. Or those who blame some disasters on him even though the circumstances and trigger points weren't related to his professional work at all. There is a train safety bill sitting in Congress for more than a year because the GOP house won't send it to the Senate. Derailments happen a few times every day around the country, but the railroad industry refuses to build and maintain safe tracks and train cars. The door blowing off the plane is clearly about the plane's construction at a private industrial giant. The bridge collapsing is about the much, much larger boats that were even imagined when the bridge was built many years ago. The airline mess occurred because Southwest Airline hadn't upgraded its computer software in years, despite being warned about it for years, too. The job of the Secretary of Transportation is not the "first responder" in these situations, and has never been.
In sum, most people don't know what the job of Secretary of Transportation is about. It's mostly executive in nature: planning, funding, policy; working with legislators, workers, and unions; making enormous adaptations to existing practices to respond urgently and intelligently to the disaster that is climate crisis. Buttigieg runs a department with 55,000 employees, and some of them are extremely senior with many years of experience as leaders in the department. He relies on excellent staff and has done a fantastic job with his vision for the future, management of a large agency; implementing and funding large, important projects; and he works extremely hard. We are lucky that he's in national politics at this level.
You really describe his job so well. Pete is an extraordinary leader. As he has shown with the Baltimore bridge collapse, he is a master at collaboration to achieve success.

People need to wake up from their outdated, small minded, regressive opinions of what good parenting looks like. Yes, it’s a big adjustment from the conventional norms but I suspect it’s probable that 2 loving, supportive, educated male partners can raise well adapted, productive, healthy children. A lot more that what can be said about Hetero couples where half the relationships end in single parent households.

Pete is some of the best of what America has to offer. The product of a loving mid-western family, he is well-educated, genuine, respectful, mission-driven, and yet humbled by his journey. Truly, Pete is a person born to lead. I am proud father of 2 wonderful women . One just retired from navy and was first women in naval history to be assigned to submarine service. She worked hard for it. My youngest daughter is the wonderful mother of my 2 grandchildren. She is a real go getter. I am so so proud. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 10 years but met 23 years ago. I am also one of Secretary Buttigieg’s future former republicans. I have read your book Mr Glezman! I thank you both for what you do. God Bless you.

I agree, although I secretly have thought we need Pete for the 2024 presidential run.
This was a wonderful interview! Pete must be exhausted flying back and forth from DC to Michigan every week.
His book is also wonderful.
I love Pete so wonderful to see him and his family.. We need his measured, intelligent and compassionate presence.
