Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries. #InsideEdition

Not very good reporting. They didn't even explain what the actual danger was with the kid who died after coming up three times for help. Was it a sudden drop off in the depth? Was there some type of undercurrent? Other than stating that the water gets cold, and could get deep - neither of which was offered as the explanation for the kid's death - I didn't see what the point of the story was.
Thank you! I thought I was the only one who was thinking this!

Sorry for her loss. The ocean isn't much different. People been swimming and drowning in water since the beginning of time. Practice saftey when swimming.
Rivers can have random spots where the water is going downwards so hard and fast that things that will normally float will be sucked under and held under from the force and that's the cause of most drownings because its impossible to get out of that situation without a rope cause it's like trying to swim through air while being pulled down with extreme force
I don't think the human race has been Around "since the beginning of time"...

1) Don't dive from such a high elevation. Jump in straight like a pencil, feet first, legs closed, and butt cheeks clenched.
2) Beware of rocks when jumping into the water.
3) Don't swim long distances if you aren't a really strong swimmer.
4) If you get a cramp, just relax and float on your back until it's gone. The quicker you breathe in/out and tense up, the faster you will sink.
5) Stretch beforehand and stay hydrated. Otherwise there is a high possibility of getting a cramp.
6) Don't go swimming while high or drunk.
7) Have at least one strong swimmer in the group that can save you.
8) have at least one person in the group trained in CPR.
9) Use common sense.
Follow most/all of these rules and you should be safe.

Enter at your own risk. Don’t tell people they can’t go in.
As a teen, I went to Dickerson's quarry in Maryland. It had jumps well over 40 feet high and if you didn't time it right, you could clip the rocks or trees on the way down. My last visit there was when a guy jumped head first and hit a partially submerged tree. He died.
A friend of mine broke his neck and got paralyzed quadriplegic when diving into a quarry. His friend had to dive in and save him he was trapped under the water.
Damn ... I am so sorry to read that. At least his friend pulled him out of the water and he did not drown. ... That's still a very sad situation though :(
Wow so sad
I think the point of this story is to be careful when jumping/diving/swimming into unknown waters. it doesn’t seem that specific to quarries other than the construction equipment that can be in there and suddenly cold temps that can lead to cramps. I think also the issue is some of these teens may be drunk and swimming while drunk is just a bad idea anywhere

The scary part is not the jump, the scary part is swimming across. That why you should try quarries that arent too far from land. It happened tto me similarly at a wave pool which I thought was easy to swim across but I ended up loosing most of my strength before getting to the other side and I was almost forced to ask for help to the lifeguards. I realized my girlfriend who crossed first didnt have this problem since she was a proffessional swimmer. Be aware of your limitations guys
Which quarries aren’t far from land?
This is really helpful, because it still can be fun, like any activity, but I wasn’t aware of the many dangers. I also thank the comment section of this video for bringing up other important facts like having proper diving technique to not hurt yourself
"Swimming in quarries is dangerous", they say. But what actually killed him? No one says now :(
Yeah because there is multiple dangers with quarries. Such as possible large rocks underneath the water, deep water, freezing water , miss timed jumps and so on.

The water in quarries is stagnant, it doesn't move, therefore very little oxygen in the water making it very hard to stay afloat

Every quarry has a creature that lurks in its depths. That's probably what got him.

I used to swim a lot in the open sea and sometimes very far out (I remember once 2 lifeguards coming towards our little group advising us to head back). On one occasion, I got a cramp in my legs and I thought, "this is bad". So, in that moment I let myself "drown" for a moment. Essentially I relaxed my body as I was submerging deeper and deeper into the water. When I felt my body sort of recovered, I swam back up and continued to shore. On another occasion, I got so tired but when I felt this feeling catching up to me, I'd make my body flat on the water with my face up and relax for a bit, then I'd continue. I remember that on one of those times I had to do this like 3 or 4 times before making it to shore. Afterwards, I got more fit and didn't have this happen again. So, I was especially reckless as a beginner.
My biggest fear is hitting a rock jumping in water
More dead Than yesterday no one will vote trump
More dead Than yesterday mine is stepping on a nail. im a wimp i know
Although they didn’t give the exact reason why he died, here’s my best conclusion: He jumped into the water, and he was met with cold temperatures, which caused his muscles to tighten and cramp. Because of this, he didn’t have the strength to bring himself up and to swim on the surface. He then drowned. This is the best I have right now.
This is a very real concern but this particular case him and his friends tried to swim across the quarry and he either got cramps or got too tired and drowned
Descripción and berry nice observation dude
RudolphTheTeddy I actually guessed by looking at the different ideas in the comment section. I took in everyone’s idea and made it into by own in paraphrase. I didn’t look at the description.
Thanks. I wish they had of just told us that.
Good guess, but no, it was the dread Cthulhu, who lies dreaming, that took this poor child into his watery tomb forevermore.
daaam this video of everyone throwing themselves from high places and having fun just makes me want to do it even more!
Just like how we should NEVER GO OUT in quarantine,
We should NEVER GO IN in a quarrie.
Poor mum, just imagine how hard it's to cope with her son dead! Poor mum
Lucy Lacemaker I know. My mum has always been there for me so I realise how she must feel. 😢
*It'S MoM nOT MUm*
Yes I'm American.
I've never even heard of a quarry before
Ikr!

Johnathan , REST IN PEACE and be your mother’s GUARDIAN ANGEL .
It's not the quarry that's the problem, it's the swimming ability of the teens jumping into it.
Didn't mention what the cause of death was though. Did he strike something while swimming across? Did the temperature change and his body froze up?
In the description it says he got cramps
A strong swimmer wont drown from a cramp...Obviously he shouldn't have tried to swim across if he didnt feel confident to do it. So why blame the quarry? It could have happened at a pool or beach.
+KlixTrio what makes you think he didn't feel confident enough to swim across it?? I don't believe you know what his thought process was at the time.
its in the description, but i think they didn't really mention it because the fact he was in a quarry had nothing to do with it. he had a cramp and was too far out... which could happen in any large water body.
+KlixTrio it does
Swimming in a mine pit with abandoned industrial materials and construction equipment with water, sounds safe.
Looks cool to me!
Sounds good with me
icebreaker900
I wouldn’t go in it tho
icebreaker900 stupid teenagers nowadays I’m 10 and I’m not that stupid (as most people I know say)
so he died not because of a quarry, but because he couldn't swim? why would they make this sound like the quarry was the deadly part?
The quarry by where I live literally has shopping carts, old bikes, old bridge structures and random debris littered from before it filled up with water. Kids that used to throw carts off the cliffs still go swimming in it every year and somebody dies EVERY year and it doesn’t stop anyone.
