Metallica's NEW Song is a JOKE! Lux Æterna

- Metallica has just released a new song called, "Lux Æterna." The question is, will this song be a JOKE to the purists? Will it create an incurable DIVIDE between old and new school fans? Before the Black album, Metallica was a totally different band. Over the years they've SOLD OUT, to become more commercially successful. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo are now OLD AF. I'm talking 666 years old...can they even rock anymore? Something tells me Dave Mustaine is rooting for their failure but we will be the ultimate judge muhahaha

I liked it . Glad Kirk was able to shred a little.
Death magnetic and hardwired were standard tuning in the studio as well.
Ok this might sound crazy BUT.. I have a feeling Jason and Dave mustaine will make an appearance on this album. Don't ask how I know. I just saw a vision
@@MetaITurtle Wouldn't mind that at all to be honest!
Being a long term fan and among those who actually think that the Black Album is indeed the last worthy one, well this song is good and I'm terribly sorry, but if there's something wrong, unfortunately that is my man Kirk, this makes me so sad 😞.
Their old stuff is legendary. Just let them have fun. We all deserve to ease into our golden years without harsh judgement. They already earned my respect years ago.
Yeah, now they try to back to the roots, people who don't know the first albums (since the black album it was good),are complaining. As on old fan of them (and old and actual megafan of megadeth) i can't stop to smile when i see some comments.
Fuck yeah brother well said if we all had this kinda thinking it would be awesome lol
THIS. When they finally quit or either James, Lars, or Kirk dies, I will cry for sure because a smaller percentage of ppl who release music nowadays actually play an instrument or even are musicians to begin with.
Yeah we all deserve it but it rarely goes that way.
right
Yes it's a very commercial song, but at the same time James' vocals are excellent!
They’re 60 man they don’t care about sounding obscure they play what makes them happy like they ALWAYS have
@@NoahParker98 no doubt I'm glad they're still doing it. Not many their age doing it that well these days
@@NoahParker98 What does their age have to do with it? You could say the same for Testament, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus etc etc. They're still shredding lol You don't need to make excuses for why it's commercial, they've been doing that for years. I think what you're missing is that fans of old Metallica loved Metallica and never got to see them mature as Metallica rather than the commercial version they turned into. Everyone knows that Metallica are the epitome of sell outs. Not that it's bad music or that you shouldn't like it. Do you, no one has a say in what we listen to except us. Long live metal!
I’m genuinely curious, what specifically
makes this song “commercial”?
@@MorbidVizions ye bro exactly
Not gonna lie. this song and particularly the solo i didnt really like when i first heard it, but the more i listen to it the more it grows on me! Cant wait to see them on their next tour!
That is Metallica, brother! You remember the Black album? F*kin c*nt
Totally agree!
It's better than the 1st time. Same as when 1st hear Blackened, too squeaky. Loved The Shortest Straw & The Frayed Ends of Sanity immediately!!
I didnt like death magnetic much. Look at how much time passed and in these last years i came to realize how great it is...
@@AK-vs9nr Yeah it’s actually quite entertaining, some good songs on their for sure.
Personally I think this is a very well crafted tribute to their old "mentors", like Judas Priest and Motorhead: it's easy to detect some similarities with songs like "Ace of spades" and "Rapid fire", but they were able to elaborate these former ingredients and mix them with their own style.. In addition to this I would like to underline the high quality of both mixing and production, the sound is astounding..
Agreed. This sounds like it could be on Stained Class, Painkiller, Iron Fist etc. Good shit.
Yep. I heard Freewheel burning 🤠
Since you mentioned Motorhead the beginning of this tune reminds me of Shake your Blood tune with Lemmy Dave Ghrol & Wino it was on the Probot record. The main riff is in the key of A and that reminds me of a lot of the riffs on Kill Em all.
This
A big bit of Motley Crue’s Red Hot too👀
It’s not bad and this coming from an old school Metallica fan. I can appreciate this style even if it’s a bit commercial it’s still heavy and Lars and James sound good. Overall good song.
Agree man theres alwys gonna be ne sayers
I’m one of the “everything post black album is meh” crew, but this song is legit. Looking for was to their new album. Feels weird to say that.
Slayer
It's got Motorhead vibes to it and it's decent.
I don’t know why bands this far into their career need to record and produce with this plastic-wrapped computer-sounding style as if they have to sit on a radio next to a pop band.
The song’s pretty great, NWOBHM-influenced almost, but I’d have loved to have heard it recorded in some shed with minimal processing on tape.
I actually like it I think Lars finally went outside his regular habits and as a band I feel they all performed well in the individual songwriting aspects.
Became a lifelong fan at the age of 14. Currently 52. I've seen them multiple times and little did I know I actually lived right down the road from them in El cerrito California in 1983. Years later after seeing a picture of them at the house in a magazine and then confirming it in a documentary I watched it blew my mind 😳😳😳 I moved out to live with my father in 83 for 8th grade became home sick then moved back to Jersey in 84. That is when my Metallica journey began 🤘🤘🤘...As a matter of fact if I am not mistaken... The person that directed this video Tim Saccenti is the younger brother of John Saccenti that I was childhood friends with in South Brunswick N.J. Small world for sure. As long as Metallica keeps playing I will listen... 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I was 14. It was 1991. Now 45. There’s something about that age that, if Metallica’s going to grab you, it just will. Been a great ride. This song is makes me want to scream and brings a tear to my eye. It’s a true ode to their roots, and their fans. The lights came on in 1983, and they’ll stay on eternally in the music. Love these guys
I just fucking love them so much! There style, there story. They are very true metal!!! I've been a live long fan and I've only been able to see then once, due to expenses but, I still have my ticket stubs lol. I was 16 years old and saw them at Darien Lake Proforming Arts Center, Darien NY in 97. I hid in the trunk of my friends car to avoid my boss because I actually worked part-time at the place they were Proforming 🤣🤣🤣 I'd do it all over again!! Long live Metallica 🤘🤘🤘
@@frankacompora5469 I went to Madison square garden for the listening party for The Black album in 91... The Wiz was giving away first come first serve free tickets. So me and my buddies made a day of it. The whole time leading up to the listening party they kept saying Metallica will not be there. Well we got to our original seats and the listening party started me and my buddy Greg decided to try and get down lower which we did. We were right on the side of the exit for the floor that goes into the back of the Garden. I see a bunch of people sort of making a commotion I look down and sure enough there they are standing there watching the reaction of the crowd watching the video and listening to the new album. Kirk actually walked out into the middle of the crowd with a hat on backwards and I believe his wife at the time and no one even knew it. I was able to high five James and Lars after they walked up to us. After they play the album they announced them and they came out on stage. It was actually James's birthday and Lars told the whole garden to say fuck you James and we did.. Epic moment in my life.... 🤘🤘🤘

I dig this tune. Reminds me of "It's Electric" cover they do. Definite Garage Days vibes for me
I got Garage Days vibes too.
Exactly my thoughts when I first heard it. Especially the one phrase choruses of both.
Very Diamond Head meets Kill 'Em All
Sabbra Cadabra mixed with Kill Em All.
Oh wow I completely forgot about that song! It does sound a lot like it!
I got a kill ‘em all vibe from this, I sent it to my brother and he told me he got a kill ‘‘em all vibe too, and now there’s a you tube video of this song with hit the lights vocals and it works pretty good
I think James voice sounds great here. The production is also pretty good. The song is simple but I like it. I hope the album is at least as good as this song.
In every single react video I've watched, the reactor is shocked "modern" Metallica is playing in Standard tuning (E). But, they did on Death Magnetic and Hardwired...to Self-Destruct with a few exceptions. Back on Death Magnetic, Metallica explained James prefers standard tuning in the studio because he doesn't have to sing for 2+ hours a night several times a week. He can focus on singing one song at a time and in segments. But with live performances, detuning allows James to preserve his voice for the long haul.
Yeah I didn’t get that either every time I’m like but they play like 95% of their songs in standard on the album lol
@@TheJerseyNinja Goes to show how much time "reactors" put on actually listening the music instead of just hating on it... Except shred, he is amazing and knows music really well... another thing other reactors lack
He was being sarcastic here. Metallica are notorious for playing in standard E.
It feels like people being wowed by this song never heard Hardwired. This song doesn't sound very different from that album at all.
The funny thing is that Metallica said from day 1 that they were going to do whatever they felt like doing. And all along their career, on like every single album, there were shocked pikachu people when they put out something new and different. But when you think about it, they really have a super power in their ability to change their sound and still pull it off. A lot of bands can't do it, or won't do it and they just pigeon hole themselves into becoming repetitive. Thinking of As I Lay Dying, they put out some really ground breaking stuff and sounded much different on Shadows Are Security than Oceans Between Us, but after that, they just settled into a formula. They still were able to put out good music but I felt like they just had so much more potential.
I'm glad. Too many of their peers never evolved or took risks and the result was boring
Well said. It's always funny to see what happens when bands do that 🙂
I think St Anger divided fans like in the way you're saying but for stupid reasons like there's no proper guitar solos lol. They just wanted to push each album and make it better.
Uh huh
This is a love letter to all their new fans, who haven’t treated them like shit and called Lars the worlds worst drummer for the past 40 years

Its a song in tribute to finding heavy metal as a teen and how important it is. Its the light in the dark and it is done in the style of the bands that Influenced them, all the NWOBHM references and style. And short and sweet to tease us in
I love it. It has a fun vibe. The average time by the track list is still over 6 min and the title have me excited. I have a feeling this is just a taste like Hardwired was.
My favorite part of Metallica is their song writing (when good) sounds like they intentionally thought about the music theory and chord progressions, it doesn't sound like they accidentally discovered the song through jamming.
I've been a Metallica fan from wayyyy back and in my opinion I think this song kicks ass. James voice is as powerful as ever. I hear motorhead influence in this song. I like it, anxious to hear more.
I think this song is bad ass!!! They sound like 1991 again. Who the hell said this song is a joke is a joke.
Very similar to Hit The Lights this has a Kill Em All feel to it which isn't bad at all
Definitely diamond head going on here. . The riffs and hetfields singing style is pure diamond head.
@mikeaceto2025 not even close... it's trash
@@mikeaceto2025Agree that it has Kill ‘em all vibes. Best thing I’ve heard from them in a long time. Glad to hear there’s still life in the old men.

I really dig this New song ! I’m 52 and lived through the early Metal years .. shred is correct , the mighty Hetfield and Kirk are sounding So fresh , this is a killer riff ! Also can’t discount how strong James vocal is in this song , hitting the high notes ! Love it !
There's nothing fresh or innovative about this song whatsoever. It's certainly not the worst of what they have released but it's definitely far from being their best also.
@@elgatofelix8917 Although I agree with you, I'm happy to hear something new. It's not their fault, but I'm tired of the old stuff!
@@elgatofelix8917 I'm hoping this single isn't a reflection of the upcoming album. The song just feels like a left over from hardwired.
This is my first time on this channel but your voice is very similar to James Hetfield’s 😭
How can this song sound happy and heavy at the same time... I am kinda excited for the album just because I expect something special... I believe it would be something like Hardwired... Mix of old and new and I am up for it...
The power of the almighty A Key
It's exciting, and heavy for that reason. Feeding off the energy rather than darkness or anger.
If you think "happy" can't be heavy, then let this be a lesson to you
I’ll take this any day over Saint Anger. That was the Metallica come back I remember and I honestly had heard nothing but music off the black album because I actually grew up pre internet and that’s all the radio played. I found out later in life they were a sick thrash metal band pre black album
St Anger is actually a great album.
It's hit the Lux.

Man, the St. Anger poster with the trash cans, shit is priceless 🤣. I wonder how many people got the trash can snare reference. New song is actually pretty cool imo, very catchy for sure but still very much them. Keep shredding brother 🤘🏼
I don’t care what anyone says. I’m 44 years old, seen them live 20 times, most recently at the Jonny & Marsha Zazula show and they kicked ass. Having Metallica in the world and still relevant is awesome. I hear elements of Hit the lights, garage days, stone cold crazy, type sounds and absolutely love it. Long live the greatest metal band to ever live.
Exactly. How many of their peers are left? Many are active, but have mostly faded. Slayer retired. Mustaine has been writing the same song for 20 years since retreating from his 90s risks. Metallica is enjoying their roots, and it's natural as you get older to reflect more and look in the rearview mirror, so writing music like Diamond Head, Motorhead, Killing Joke etc. is understandable.
Didn't you just name cover tunes tho?

I feel like this is just the intro riff on repeat.
Metallic to me used to be a band that had riffs upon riffs and variation upon variation in every single song.
Not so much anymore.
When some hear pop rock, I hear a tribute to classic heavy metal - those melodies have influenced what later became pop rock, but back in the day it was the real deal. This song is a tribute to Diamond Head (listen how the chorus sounds like "It's Electric" - James even says "Lightning the nation" later in the song, a direct reference to Diamond Head's "Lightning to the nations" album) as well as all their influences (Motorhead, Mercyful Fate, etc.), as well as a wink to their first song "Hit the Lights" (Lux Aeterna means "eternal light"). Hell, somebody even did a mashup of this song with the Hit The Lights vocals on it and it matches super well.
It's basically Metallica saying they want to have fun playing the songs they like, the music that made them who they are. It's the whole theme of the new album.
Lars is using the Black Album kit again, much warmer and punchier sound - I like this, it's got a good groove
There's nothing punchy about the drumming with the mixing on this song. It sounds nothing like the drums on the Black Album. If this song was actually mixed like songs off of the Black Album, it would sound a million times better.
Lmao, the drums are programmed
Yeah it's Tuned differently maybe new skins?!?!
Bullshit. 1. He did not use the White Drum Kit that he used on the TBA-Tour in the Studio - watch One year and a half in the life of Metallica - he used a completely different drum kit for recording TBA and 2nd and most important- the kit Lars uses here is a Tama Starclassic. The famous Black and White Drumkit he used on TBA-Tour was a Tama Artstar II with Granstar Lugs. The shells were much deeper, and these kits did have a heavy and deep sound, not "punchy". But anyway - it is not the Artstar Drumkit of the Black Album Era. I highly doubt that the old gun grey Tama Granstar of the AJFA-Tour and the Tama Artstar of TBA era are still existing! Lars had about 15 other drumkits, all Tama Starclassics(which were introduced by Tama in 1994 with thinner(6mm instead of 8mm on the Gran-and Artstarsand "shorter"shells). And he surely does not keep them all. Especially not the extremly old one he used 30-35 years ago and which do have a sound which is not considered "modern", because of the thick and deep shells(even as their dark, deep sound was considered to be THE Heavy Metall Kit in the 80's). But anyway - i have a Tama Granstar, like Lars used on the AJFA-Tour. The Artstar of TBA-Tour. It exactly the same only that the wood used is different. Granstar was Birch and the Artstar was Maple. And this drumkit IS NOT an Artstar Drum-Kit. Its a Starclassic. So - Lars simply has got another new Drum-Kit. A new Tama Starclassic in white. Thats it. But its not the Black Album Drum-Kit. Nowhere. Totally different Drum-Kit
@@H.P._Lovecrafts_Cat seriously? Have ever been in a studio and recorded music on a semi-professional or professional way? Obviously not. Nobody on a professional level really does that. And it does not sound like that at all. They are definetely not programmed.

I like it, but I definitely hope the album has more variety than Hardwired did, that was my one issue with it.
sounds exactly like hit the lights. the chorus involves saying the song title multiple times, and both song titles have something to do with lights.
At first listen the alliteration was bothering me but I liked the riffage and the kirky shreds and Lars’ drumming….after I’ve heard the song multiple times I’ve decided I enjoy it.
Metallica is officially no longer metal. This sounds more like a Ram Jam song than Metallica.
they are absolutely metal they helped redefine metal
Your ears are in need of some attention then
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Yes, they helped redefine metal back in the 80's. Now they're just a standard rock band. This song sounds weak AF. It's nowhere near metal. Thgis song sounds like Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Ram Jam.
It definitely has a southern rock sound to it. I agree that they're no longer metal, and DEFINITELY not thrash metal.

Wasn't hard wired and death magnetic mostly standard? With the odd dropped D, D standard or Eb tuning on the odd song here and there, the only time they play downtuned is live
I like that this song is lyrically & sonically a call back to "Hit The Lights" the first song they released.
I thought I was the only one seeing that reference.
I like it. NWOBHM-style and catchy. They’ll never make another Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets (neither will any other band tbh), and people need to get over that.
Exactly it's like a less gritty Motorhead song.

For this album, it appears that producer Rick Rubin sat the band down with a stack of albums like he did with Death Magnetic, except instead of golden age Metallica, the stack was Marty Friedman era Megadeth. The solo confirms this as Kirk trying to sound like Marty literally sounds like me trying to sound like Kirk.
The production is okay as well.
This song, to me, evokes sounds of the Garage Days Re-revisted EP. Punk-metal fusion, with simplified song structures and catchy hooks.
What's most interesting to me about Metallica, is their constant evolution and ability to adapt to what's en vogue.
Exactly, that’s the first thing I thought too. I have been a fan since 80s and Garage days/Garage Inc is what I thought it sounded like immediately on my first listen

this song is freaking sick, also if you didn't noticed. I think Lars is using the white tama drum set he had on justice for all
I noticed the same kit…it was a Limited Edition…
Its actually smaller than the justice one. It's more like the smaller version of the big kit he had from the tail end of the black album touring run through the load era. Its basically his current custom series in the old white colour.

Funny how Rick Beato instantly picked up it was in standard tuning and said they always use it - yet this guy had to double check and says they don't use it these days.

Lars often had such unique drum sounds in the past. (Yes - "Compressed," exactly. The cymbals are not to my liking, either.)
@@sethcashman1011 You nailed it. What happened here, and how most modern metal records are recorded, is that they replaced drum sounds with one specific sample over and over again. There is no human drummer who ever lived who can get the exact same sound with every hit, and certainly not one who is not known for precision on his best days.
Then they lock the drums to a quantized grid, further making them sound like a machine played it, because, well, basically it did.

some parts of the song had a sort of overkill vibe
Kirk’s solo is not good. The rest of the song is good. Solo sounds like he just slapped it together and didn’t put much effort into making it work with the song.

The main riff and Het's singing style give me a Garage Days vibe...and those songs werent even theirs.
I'm happy they are sticking to their guns and being Metallica. They don't have nothing to prove to anyone. The 80's sound is refreshing with today's crap.
I love these idiots commenting how they agree with you that it's a joke. They clearly haven't watched this video. Your vids are always cleverly-titled. It helps weed out the dummies with opinions on something they clearly haven't watched. It's like a social experiment.
damn. you're hilarious to listen to ! i really enjoyed this little bit. a lot of laughing.
It’s not a bad song at all. Look forward to hearing the entire album
I don’t mind it. I’m a younger fan of thrash, listen to a lot more of the first 2-3 albums of both Megadeth and Metallica. Don’t like either band very much in their newer sounds, even if I do have some faves off of those albums. It’s definitely a throwback, go through the badass riffs we know song rather than anything new but after a lot of trying to recapture the magic of MoP and a lot of rock weirdness, it’s nice to hear dads smash their instruments like they’re 20 again.
I’m an old school Metallica fan and I love this new song.
I think Metallica are trying to bring back the "Kill 'em All Era". The riff, the drums, the guitar tone, are all in the style they did in Kill 'em All.
I don't understand any negativity towards this new song cause this going back to the begining Kill Em All style Hit The Lights if some of the album has similar styles like first album it will be great 👍
'Tallica still kicks ass !!!
I'm gonna go ahead and say this isn't even Lars playing drums. There's no way he could handle double bass at that tempo for that long. He really struggles these days. Watch his One performance on Howard Stern, it's embarrassing. And this doesn't even sound like his drumming style. It's either programed or it's not him. There's no way he can do this song live as is. If they do it, it'll be very different. I'll bet any amount of money on this!!!
I'm the cliche "Metallica hasn't had a good album since Black" guy. This song, even if "poppy" is addicting and i openly love it. If metallica can do the unthinkable and make THE WHOLE ALBUM this good instead of just having 2 good songs, i might actually buy a metallica album for the first time this century.
So good to hear Kirks blistering leads!🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥
killer solo and not a bunch of wah LMAO
@@SKRooU2 its a recycled solo but it sounds alright.
@@RD-js3uo feed your b.s. to someone else
@@SKRooU2 keep your wig on, it literally half of the solo from devils dance
James vocals sound like his vocals in the 98 recordings of garage inc, the chorus reminds me of its electric.
Kirk's solo reminds me of the solo from Struggle Within
How do I block this guy from my feed?
I'm blown away and impressed with their new song.. Production is awesome but I'm just torn if that is really Lars playing the kit it's so perfect..
Of course it is, he's been playing for over 40 years - and this is the studio, where you take your time, do many takes, splice it together and then have pretty good production value
I definetly am digging this song, but I’m waiting for Kirk to have more melodic and rythmic exposition in his solos. I hear licks from so many of his solos throughout this album. Would like to find a new solo of his unique and more expressive, like the thing that should not be or shortest straw, dyers eve?
What if this album was a concept album: all in the vain of different periods of metallica; 72 seasons of metallica. This could be the "kill em all" song based on nwothm riffing and drumming. The positive lyrics could speak to what they were feeling at the time. New sub genre of metal, etc.
I can't stop playing this song. Metallica is by far my favourite band. I love all of their music and they inspired me to play guitar. You did a great analysis of this SHRED. I love all of you videos SHRED. Your music knowledge is amazing. Metallica is back, full speed or nothing...HAHAHAH. Can't wait for the new album \m/...
To be honest I really like this new chapter of Metallica🤘🤘
Like if Hit The Lights had a fun night with Fuel, we get Lux Aeterna. It’s good, well written, interesting and catchy.
I’m an old school Metallica fan and I FUCKING love this!!!
The song is growing on me fast!. The lead rules!
Me too. I didn't like it at first but I love it now. I'm a person who is really easy to impress. That's why I love all of their discography lol
This is more than a youtube channel... This is a Man's journey...
NWOBHM rehash, 40 years later. Sounds like a faster version of BLITZKRIEG's "Inferno".
I think it's better than anything they've put out since the black album. It sounds a hell of a lot like old Diamondhead.
I wanna know what plug in is playing drums..
