Maintenance Partners Rewinding and Balancing of 15MVA ELIN Generator Rotor in 8 weeks time

Repair of ELIN DTG 100/2-227 Generator in Maintenance Partners' Zwijndrecht workshop

The stator was overhauled in Maintenance Partners' workshop. The overhaul included dry ice cleaning and renewal of the winding supports with epoxy material.
After 50 years of operation, the rotor's insulation quality had deteriorated and a full rewind was required to ensure reliable operation.
Teams of 3 electrical specialists worked in 2 shifts to finalize the rewinding in 8 weeks time.
The rotor consists of 300 copper turns. Each turn is installed individually and insulated individually.
After installation of the retaining rings, the rotor is
ready for high speed balancing. During the high speed balancing, Repetitive Surge Oscillograph (RSO) measurements are conducted to detect any short circuits between turns.
The rotor is balanced at various speeds up to 3 600 RPM. Imbalance is detected and the positions for corrections are indicated on screen. It takes multiple runs to remove all
unwanted imbalance. In between runs, balancing weights are added to improve balance and eliminate vibrations. When the high speed balancing is finished, the rotor and stator are ready for transport and installation onsite.
