I have the Shakespeare salt I love it seeing you folding it down made it looks so cumbersome I don't have that I fold my down with ease no problems and quick
I got a Shakespeare blue tripod and I have to say mine is sturdy and does not rattle, but each to your own, I wouldn’t use anything else, merry Christmas to you and happy new year.
I get out 2 or 3 times a week. It bounces around the back of the jeep the rest of the time. 6 years still going strong. The Ian golds will fold if you fall onto it, don't ask how I know that
I have a Shakespeare Salt and have used it for around 6 years or more. I certainly don't get any wobble from the top. I don't try folding down the top rest like you did as it is quite clear it is not designed to be. The splay bars are brilliant in that I can just lift up the whole thing if I I moving in and out with the tides and it is ready to go as soon as I put it down. I take both top and bottom rests off every time I pack it away and and strap them to the unit using NGT rod straps. Works perfect, never had anything drop off doing so and never lost any of the black nuts for doing them up either. I can say the same about the actual unit. 100% reliable and covers every beach situation I need. If I ever managed to break it then I would buy another. The Shakespeare Salt must be the most used beach rest that I see at the coast but I have never seen anyone who has the issues that you generated it putting it away. It is very easy. You made it quite clear you didn't like it at the start and then took every opportunity to knock it. A very disappointing comparison as I thought they were all good except the very old version of the Ian Gold you used which is not a fair representation of what they are selling now.
@johngmls Everything you said is true, don't know why he is so biased against the Shakespeare rest, in my opinion it's definitely the best one to get. Had mine for many years without any problems and it has so many features that the others don't have. The best is that it folds down so easily and takes up much less room in the car.
I’m getting back into fishing and as a disabled army veteran these reviews are essential to me when choosing the right product. Great job on the review.
I invested in the salt tripod. Mine doesn’t rattle when tightened up a bit heavy it was the leg locking bars that I liked and it fits in the boot of my car and it was a bit cheaper than the Ian gold tripods.
I think that you're very biased against the Shakespeare salt. Its an excellent rest, it folds down much smaller than the others and is very firm with its extra bracing, I particularly like the way that it angles the rods outwards and that the rod holders are part of it and not just attached plastic clips. I've found it very easy to put up and take down and it fits nicely in the car. I have had mine for many years and it has never let me down.
Had my Ian golds supermatch now for nearly 30 years I think and its never let me down , never needed to fix anything tho I have just fitted some Spooligan rod grips that hold the rod snuggly and let my keep the multiplier rod ring side up . that all being I'd really like to try either tronixpro or the new Akios simply for weight reasons more than anything else
yeah I thought the same. So easy to put away in my opinion. I've had a bit of time getting quicker at setting up and putting away in fairness.. but I didn't think it was that difficult on my first few attempts, nice and easy with the bag.
I love my Ian Golds Supermatch. I’ve had it for years. I change to single cup in the winter. Chasing two rods across a dark Arbroath beach on the hunt for winter cod ain’t much fun.
I like the extra supports on the legs. The tripods without them are fine on soft ground but legs splay out on hard ground / harbour walls. Shakespeare Salt has the advantage there for me.
Brought an Ian golds from a boots sale 20 odd years ago for a fiver still as good as the day I brought it. Only a small one but it’s the dogs 2 swingers
There is no comparison, only one of those made in uk. Have had my Ian golds now for over 50yrs. and still works like the day i bought it. good luck with your review.
I’ve always had Ian Gold tripod. I’ve got a 6 foot one when I was 14 years old and still going strong and I’ve got a 7 foot which I bought a couple of years ago. The only problem I have with any of them is the 7 foot one is now is the seventh one is so Flexi Because of the material she now made out of look at the 6 foot and the 7 foot trox I’ve got you can see the difference clearly, but I think yes, tronx pro I’ve got it right
Ian Golds rod rests have survived the tests of time, outlasted the many copies and pretenders over the years.Used 3 since my first one around 1990, all had hard use mostly rock fishing, all my three are still going perfectly strong and usable you cannot go wrong.
Good honest test. My Ian Gold Match is 20yrs+ and Everything is original on it. I would trust a couple of those a winter? One looked like the Tesla of rod rests. Bit shaky and sometimes bits fall off. Lol
Ian golds are the best, I purchased my 6ft version when they first came out (i think late 1980s) I’ve upgraded with their cups and heads over the years and still using it today, brilliant. The Best.
Have a similar 80s vintage, possible an Ian Golds tripod . All aluminium construction. 80" tall 2 heads ,1" inch aluminium angle section , 3/4" diameter Al tube legs. The only plastic components being the 2 black plastic rod but cups and the 4 white plastic leg tube storage clips and 2 other clips on the cross brace between the legs. It's been totally bombproof which is what you need on the beach. Functionality , good engineering design and quality materials. Good luck with products available today.
I got the shakespeare salt a few months ago and its sturdy enough for me, the bag it comes with is also nice to have for storage. Setting it up and putting it away doesnt seem as bad as it looks in the video though but maybe thats just from experience.
I have the Ian Gould super match that has adjustable front and rear legs 3ft to 6ft folds down really nice . I fitted a leg lock kit and it has been a fantastic tripod. Like yours its seen some action and a little battered, I have had it for over 20 years. I was looking into a new tripod but think I will stick with my old faithful.
Hi Matt good to see some honest product reviews. I have had Shakespere Salt for quite a few years, and you are right that the Bottom Cup and Top Rod holders are difficult to tighten on main leg and move about. I do not tend to extend the legs that much and would prefer the top rod holders to be more like the Tronix Pro. The way the rods splay away from the base though I think is a good feature but I do find it a little heavy. That saying, it has not let me down, and I think you made a bit of 'meal' of packing it away in your video :). The Salt does come in a bag, which I use for my lure rods which is a bonus. The Tronix Pro is a bit expensive but does come with optional extras so you can personalise it. All in all I would probably buy an Ian Golds if it came to replacing the Salt, but may look into how i could replace the Rod holder arms on what I have.
I have used the Salt for years, over a decade on sand and on the rocks around Arbroath. Without the support legs the tripods are of little use on rocks, you can pick the salt up one handed in the dark and move up or down easily following the tide. The others look ok, but I would never go back to a tripod without the supports to give stability in high winds and rough seas. Quite a few anglers have binned their Golds and gone to the Salt after fishing alongside me. Personal choice and our fishing marks will no doubt be different.
Great review. I have had a salt tripod for over 10 years now. It's served me well. I find it to be very sturdy. Would be happy to give the tronix one a try for free though 😉
I went for the Shakespeare just because the feet slide in a out so its nice and short when packed away and it also fits in the car perfectly without it laying across between the car 2 front seats
Ian golds deluxe with cut down arms kitted out with spooligan cups and heads. Haven't found a better set up. What was the make of the rig hanger on yours?
Follow you for a while now and all your bass fishing videos have helped me massively over my time of fishing so thanks for always supplying informative handy videos to assist us anglers. Merry Xmas to you and yours buddy
Honest review, Matt. A lot of the Eastbourne match men are using the sealegs, and seem pleased with them. Thanks for all the videos, looking forward to seeing next years adventures.
Thanks for this great video, you must be a mindreader as I was looking for a new rest and your video helped me make my mind up so I don't buy a duff one! Cheers and Happy Christmas mate 😁
Another great video 😊. This video came at the perfect time for me too. I’ve just started saltwater angling and I’ve been looking at tripods. I’ve definitely taken your comments on board. Thank you. Don’t work too hard over the Christmas period. Wishing you all the best for 2025
Very honest and fair reviews.... Not seen a comparison of a variety of rod holders before....usually singular only. Well done and thanks , as I am looking for a replacement for my existing stand which is pretty well used over the years. Cheers and Merry Christmas to all.
Brilliant well timed video, I'm in need of a rod holder for the beach. My 10 year old would love setting this holder up. He's very independent, he loves getting the rods ready. Then gets his food out and waits for the blank 😂😂.
I got sent here just now when watching fishing dorset live when i asked him what tripod he recommended and im now subscribed to you and definitely need my first tripod. Many thanks
Thank you for the comparison Matt. I’m new to angling and I wish I didn’t need a tripod. I hope to see more of these types of test, it helps a lot😊. I hope you and the family have a lovely Xmas, and a happy new year.🎉
Great that youve done this video its made my mind up on the rod rest to get my son to get him into fishing with me more to have father and son time thank you Merry xmas and a happy new year to you
Relieved you made this very clear video Matt. I thought it was just me thinking my Shakespeare Salt was a time consuming heavy cumbersome lot of metal bars with very wobbly rod rest bar and weak securing knobs. Like having heavy boots on without doing up the laces. Now I know its not just that I've got a dud one or am extra bumbly. Thankyou
Great and fair review Matt. I must admit i favoured the Tronix because it seemed well thought out & sturdy. Have a great festive season, all the very best to you & yours🤗🧑🎄 Cu in the New Year👍
First fresh honest review I have seen, it’s convinced me to not buy what my initial choice was. They all support rods that’s easy, but I want stability and sturdiness, I want know a light bite when it hits not worry that it might be the loose joints flexing. Top review and independent
Loved the vid it's excellent that you did a rough guide to the stands it makes it easier for me to decide what to get thanks for the info and have a merry x-mas and a guid new year keep up yer guid work.
I've had the Shakespeare Salt for years. The only thing I didn't like was the leg supports. I found them annoying on the rocks. So I took them off 😊 Happy Christmas Matt.
Very interesting review Matt. I have seen many positive reviews of the Sea Legs but can certainly see why you are not so keen! Ian Golds for me too although I currently have a Leeda rest
Just was looking for some reviews before buying a new tripod as my old one is about 20+ years old if not more😂 and there you go! You come up with this video! Thank you 🙂
Thank you Thank you, I am just in the process of choosing a new tripod and your vid was timed to perfection and honest 😊 Merry Christmas and a Happy New year 🎉
I have been sea fishing more than 50 years. I have a few tripods but the most recent one I bought is a failure. Yes it's telescopic and folds up and is fully adjustable. The problem is it takes a fair bit of time to set it up on a beach ( wasted fishing time ) and weighs about the same as a Land Rover. As it's a fair walk from my car to my favourite fishing spot I never used that tripod but prefer an older, lightweight and basic tripod. Whatever you buy watch the weight.
Nice honest review! The Ian golds super match is definitely the best out there for me! Had many of them and others but always go back to the super match! Great video!
Great review of some of the different options out there. Have been thinking of getting one mainly for when the kids come. I'm still using an old school one that is probably the best part of 30 years old!
Good to see a comparison. My best stand I bought off eBay. Some fella was making them and lasted years and took any weight hanging off it. Finally gave up the ghost.
Great to see the tripods next to each other, yeah tronixpro looks like it will do well, Ian golds been around for a reason, u don't need to over complicate a rest. Happy Xmas 🌲👏
Great review and much needed as ill be looking for a new tripod soon as using the salt there are a few issues i’ve encountered , great to see what is flimsy/poor design thank you
It's quite clear to see Ian Golds just got it right all those years ago. Had my supermatch over 15 years now and still going strong.
Yep no wabble with mine
Got the Shakespeare salt had 5 years go out most weekends never let me down
10 years + for me and my salt
Best value for money
I get out 2 or 3 times a week. It bounces around the back of the jeep the rest of the time. 6 years still going strong. The Ian golds will fold if you fall onto it, don't ask how I know that
@@Jason-im3pzthe question is when you bent the Ian gold when falling on it could you bend it back so it worked?
@@kphh7029 I bent out most of it, the main leg is still a bit kinked but worth noting I still use it
I think that this is the first time I have seen a review on tripods. Thank you Matt. The Ian Gold version with Spooligan cups is my choice.
That's my choice as well, imitation is the sincerest for of flattery.
Yep was a good watch
I have a Shakespeare Salt and have used it for around 6 years or more. I certainly don't get any wobble from the top. Fair enough Matt ...but...I love my Shakespeare Salt
Merry Christmas 🎅 👍

100% best on the market then and still is
Good review but I love my Salt tripod & think you made a real hash in folding it away. It's a lot easier than you showed in my opinion
I tend to agree here.
yeah I thought the same. So easy to put away in my opinion. I've had a bit of time getting quicker at setting up and putting away in fairness.. but I didn't think it was that difficult on my first few attempts, nice and easy with the bag.

Great review, like you have used the Golds tripod for the last 20 years , have trouble finding fault with them.
Stick with the best
Never had any issues with my shakespeare salt! Ive also taken the stabiliser arms off and its alot lighter and easier to fold up!
Had the Ian Golds for over 10 years still as good as new but could do with a soft lining to the top rod cups.
Another proper down to earth review. Many thanks again.
Brought an Ian golds from a boots sale 20 odd years ago for a fiver still as good as the day I brought it. Only a small one but it’s the dogs 2 swingers

I think the imax folding tripod is the sturdier that I use myself and it packs down well 👍
I have one and an Ian golds. . The IMAX is better quality in my opinion but slightly less stable in the wind with it being smaller.
Good honest test. My Ian Gold Match is 20yrs+ and Everything is original on it. I would trust a couple of those a winter? One looked like the Tesla of rod rests. Bit shaky and sometimes bits fall off. Lol

It's been totally bombproof which is what you need on the beach.

Hardly anything of the ian golds left 😂 , db1 7ft supermatch everyday .... simple light & robust ...
I've got a shakespeare salt. Hasn't let me down yet
I got the shakespeare salt a few months ago and its sturdy enough for me, the bag it comes with is also nice to have for storage. Setting it up and putting it away doesnt seem as bad as it looks in the video though but maybe thats just from experience.
Was looking for a New rod rest , Very informative now know what I’m going to be buying
Thanks for review

Good Advice thanks
Thanks for the review, I'm new to sea fishing and was looking at buying a rod stand as I now have 2 rods. Once again, thanks for a good review.
Merry christmas Matt and family.not forgetting Nellie.
Good reviews but i like my Shakespeare.
Hope your shifts are not to bad .

Hi, love your vids, I think it’s like everything you buy, you can slightly adjust and modify to your needs.
Very true!

Another great review, very informative and easy to follow. Looking forward myself to getting back out
At last......a proper honest comparison of Tripods....Matt, you may have well saved a few fellow anglers a few hard earned quid.
I have owned the Shakespeare salt for years now , I have 0 movement its solid, I can not fault mine.
Great review.
I have had a salt tripod for over 10 years now. It's served me well. I find it to be very sturdy. Would be happy to give the tronix one a try for free though 😉
Just two new handles six new heads lol
I was considering treating myself to the akios but after watching this the tronix does look a better build quality 👌🏼 great video, very helpful 👏
Great review, canceled my Shakespeare Salt Beach Rest online order after watching this video! Thanks!
Thanks for producing, its good to understand whats required for new starters.
Follow you for a while now and all your bass fishing videos have helped me massively over my time of fishing so thanks for always supplying informative handy videos to assist us anglers. Merry Xmas to you and yours buddy
Thank you for the video, this is very helpful to me as I'm hoping to get back into fishing after 40 years. Thanks again and Happy New Year
Honest review, Matt. A lot of the Eastbourne match men are using the sealegs, and seem pleased with them. Thanks for all the videos, looking forward to seeing next years adventures.
They are still a good addition to the Market but maybe im getting old and picky ! Think there are better rests
Thanks for this great video, you must be a mindreader as I was looking for a new rest and your video helped me make my mind up so I don't buy a duff one! Cheers and Happy Christmas mate 😁
Hope it helps
Another great video 😊. This video came at the perfect time for me too. I’ve just started saltwater angling and I’ve been looking at tripods. I’ve definitely taken your comments on board. Thank you.
Don’t work too hard over the Christmas period. Wishing you all the best for 2025
Good test,I'm in the market for a new rest.
Ian golds is 1st choice at the moment
Good choice!
As always a great review mate. It's sealed the deal for my next purchase as I'm looking to replace my Ian Golds after a solid 25 years of use!

Great that youve done this video its made my mind up on the rod rest to get my son to get him into fishing with me more to have father and son time thank you
Merry xmas and a happy new year to you
Interesting to see, I got my first sea fishing rod so been looking at the tripods. Thanks for the insight 🙂
Simple is best, like to avoid plastic too - Ian Gold one works well for me out of that group
Simple for the win!
Really good video too, great to see them demonstrated and any misgivings shared - I’m learning so much from the channel, thanks so much
Looking for a new tripod ,glad I watched this review, very informative
Loving the Anglex kit, first time I've seen it. That bottom cup bracket looks superb! Great insight once again, cheers Matt and Happy Christmas!!
Thanks 👍
Very timely review as I am looking to get my first beach casting rod rest. Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks was looking at the sea legs glad I didn’t take the plunge untill I saw this ! Top content as normal keep it up :)
another great video. its great to see a side by side comparisonm . i must say the tronix looks lush, well done and thanks,
Thanks for the review, I ve only gotten into sea fishing this year and haven't gotten a rod rest yet, the Ian Golds would be my choice. Tight lines
Got the new Icon and in my opinion trumps all the stands here 👍
Another great video. Happy Christmas
Timely review I'm just getting back into sea fishing and will be buying a tripod thanks.
Welcome back
Can't beat the good old Ian golds db7 , Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family 😉
Very informative thanks for the video. The tronix pro looks great
Important bit of kit I love a simple rest & light
Yes agreed got to be right the tripods for sure
Relieved you made this very clear video Matt. I thought it was just me thinking my Shakespeare Salt was a time consuming heavy cumbersome lot of metal bars with very wobbly rod rest bar and weak securing knobs. Like having heavy boots on without doing up the laces. Now I know its not just that I've got a dud one or am extra bumbly. Thankyou
Like your review I need a rod rest and it will be put to good use ,happy new year
Great and fair review Matt. I must admit i favoured the Tronix because it seemed well thought out & sturdy. Have a great festive season, all the very best to you & yours🤗🧑🎄
Cu in the New Year👍
First fresh honest review I have seen, it’s convinced me to not buy what my initial choice was.
Another informative vlog. Merry Christmas mate.
I've had the Shakespeare Salt for years. The only thing I didn't like was the leg supports. I found them annoying on the rocks. So I took them off 😊
Happy Christmas Matt.
Thanks for another informative video… Merry Christmas. 👍
Very interesting review Matt. I have seen many positive reviews of the Sea Legs but can certainly see why you are not so keen! Ian Golds for me too although I currently have a Leeda rest
great review that man , i agree with you on the salt , sometimes its hard to know which rods getting the bite because of the wobble
and it heavy
Just was looking for some reviews before buying a new tripod as my old one is about 20+ years old if not more😂 and there you go! You come up with this video! Thank you 🙂
good honest review matt, very informative. was trying to figure out where you filmed it 😀
This is Pett level
Another great video. Keep them coming. Always enjoy your stuff
Thanks for that, I’ve been looking for a couple of months now. Good info.
Thanks mate
Thank you Thank you, I am just in the process of choosing a new tripod and your vid was timed to perfection and honest 😊
Merry Christmas and a Happy New year 🎉
I have been sea fishing more than 50 years.
Depends a bit on the relative prices of the 4. Good review though, thanks and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thanks Matt, just what we needed was some comparisons. Great review 👏
Brilliant review, rod rests are totally overlooked in favour of rods but are so important in supporting your major investments in rods and reels
Absolutely
Great review and much needed as ill be looking for a new tripod soon as using the salt there are a few issues i’ve encountered , great to see what is flimsy/poor design thank you
Good honest review! Merry Christmas
Good honest review very helpful to new anglers starting out what to look for in strengths and weakness's of the shiny stuff to catch the angler
Superb prize, and a very well made product ,could be the 1 I chose too replace my Ian Golds which has definitely stood the test of time
