The multiplier just hasn't really evolved, but the fixed spool has improved no end... Probably alot to do with Carp anglers using "Big put" reels and thereby this technology can be used in sea reels too When Daiwa can still sell the ORIGINAL 7HT for over 200 quid retail in 2024 then this confirms how little multiplier tech has moved on since the mags
I learned to cast multiplier with a 7HT and they can still hold their own today, as a novice I could empty the spool on one with a half pendulum cast, but realistically if you're trying to fish distance at night and don't want to spend the evening untangling or re spooling use a fixed spool !
I love my multipliers for fishing short for bass in the summer but if I want to go for distance at night , fixed spool all the time. If you fish the reel up the rod , the 6000 size reels tend to cast better , less weight and less clunky, we all tend to go for line capacity over what is actually more practical to cast !
I changed from multiplier about 4 years ago to a Penn Surfblaster 7000 and a conti rod. No going back to a multiplier. I am now using a 5000 size reel and an 11'6" bass rod. 40lb braid straight through. 4 oz max sinker. This combo suits my needs for my beach fishing. 60 metre casts max I guess. I can do 80 metres in the field. Iam not catching any less fish, but at 68 years old it is so much easier and rewarding on light gear. I don't fish heavy grounds or target heavy fish. I just enjoy light pleasure fishing. Thank you for making and sharing your vids with us Matt
Multiplier user for over 60 years, just changed last year, new continental rod and fix spool reel, the ease of casting and distance is noticeable for me, for night fishing it's so dependable, great video.
Thanks for sharing- Interesting and for someone with your being able to tell the difference is valid. Thanks hope you continue enjoying that new set up
I've been fishing for a long time, but these days I'd go fixed spool every time. The biggest reason was using braid straight through. I could never use mono again, it feels like fishing with elastic. Plus a decent fixed spool set up is hundreds cheaper than a decent multiplier set up.
Top input there thank you - I love the braid but would add monos stretchyness can help move a rolling lead into fish holding spots for flounders and sole. Braid as you say though is the best ... i feel another Vs video coming BRAID V MONO!
Definitely a vid id like to see.. only heard of braid but no idea whys or whats best.. thanks mt n this is a very detailed excellent vid on the reels.. only know fixed.. n im happy with that for now but cool to see the difference... hearing about the larger spool with a thin bevelled edge was really useful info... time to upgrade from my cheapy starter reel.. nice 1@SaltwaterAngler
I had a ziplex rod and Penn multiplier and sold the lot, went back to my Ryobi fixed spool and Michelle rod with a fold down first ring. Used the back last February and no problem getting out 75 yards. They have been put to bed for now as I have a new set up. Great advice for anyone taking up fishing young or old
Awesome video mate I have fished fixed spool since I started Then when I moved over to try pike Fishing I learned the bait caster and am now learning the beach multiplier Tbh I am really enjoy using the multiplier atm I'm using the 7hts
Thanks Jason. I think there is some joy in learning ing the ways of the multiplier and at least you haven't just stuck with what you know.7ht a good solid choice too. Look forward to seeing you on @theeastbournefisherman pinging them out
It's a personal choice they both have good and bad points. I use both braid on the FS, and mono on my multies. The FS is more user friendly expecially into a headwind.
Some amazing comments there people. It is a subject that really interests me as I am a multiplier user of some vintage. The fx reels when I started were awful - very heavy (modern ones are now where near the weight of a 70's one) so many of us went to multiplier very early in our fishing lives. Compared with today I look back and know how poor these were too but we made the best of what we had! When I started coaching I almost had to re-learn fx reels again. Its a very different feel on the rod and I can certainly cast further with the multi but, as I said on the video, if I started fishing again today I would go down the fx route. A decent fx coupled with the right rod for the angler will give you plenty of distance when you need it BUT, always remember that the fish could be under your feet or anywhere in between there and the far distance so work out where they are rather than blast it out regardless
Very interesting points. In the 70s and 80s everyone used multipliers. We fished at Dungeness and put baits out 120yds. You wouldn't have done that with the fixed spools then! I still use multipliers but don't need those sort of distances now ! I still prefer the small size and direct gearing sitting flat on the rod. But then I cast with the reel at the Base. 😂
Another great video.Used to use both back in the day. But since becoming disabled only use fixed spools as I can't compress the rods enough for multiplier.
Fascinating to see a comparison of the two reels, and really helpful. Speaking as a lousy caster, I always use fixed spool for beach casting and multiplier for boat fishing, I'm too nervous of bird's nesting to beach cast with a multiplier. I am feeling guilty being the first commenter - I'm at work and therefore should be working, but your video was too tempting! All the best Matt.
I think I prefer using my multi's simply because they are that much more involved , 1 thing I would suggest to anyone thinking about going down the multi route is buy the most expensive you can afford ( which is something Id never tell anyone about anything else ) , the higher quality brakes and bearings with just make it so much more user friendly
Really good input thank you. I like what you say about the multis being more involved- That is ahard thing to quantify. But it is a feeling isn't it. Good tip on the multipliers spending budget!
Many thanks for the video. Fair comparison I'd say. Although I recommend you don't have a hand above the reel when casting multiplier, one down near the butt and one under the reel works well for me. Check your slow motion and you'll see the potential problem. Maybe it was just due to the filming gear. Tight lines and thanks for the content.
Casting with a multiplier is not just about casting really it’s a feeling of satisfaction and you get enjoyment from casting one. Casting a fixed spool don’t really have an enjoyment to it. It’s just something you have to do. I love multi and when I fish I rarely get a bird net may get 1 or 2 a year with 1000s of casts. When you learn not to keep pushing for 2 yards more when fishing your stop getting bird nests.
I moved from fixed spools to multipliers because I didn't want to use a glove or cannon and without those things too painful. I just got used to casting multies indtead. Seemed a better solution for the heavier weight. Fixed spools with heavy leads just seems awkward in comparison. Finally the multiplier takes up less space in my box.
Some good points here. Agree about carrying them around- Yes ofcourse- On a multi we are not taking up the weight of the lead on our finger in the same way as a fixed spool.
I fish two rods on the beach, I use fixed spool and mulitplier, love the multiplier until I get a birds nest, that don't happen very often as I don't try to hard for distance, that bird nest happen when I don't check the setup before the first cast. When cleaning after a session setting get moved so worth checking set up every time you have a new trip to the beach. 👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
I have just started back sea fishing after a break of 20+ years, i have purchased 2 continental rods with fixed spool reels , i ised to use multiplier reels when fishing before but thought i know im just going to getting tangles so went for fixed spool reels
Bought the 525 earlier this year, i have never used a multiplyer before🤦♂️. Use Surfblaster fixed spool reels normally. Thanks for sharing Matt. Also going to ( just bought ) try some 8oz uptider weights, some of the marks in north Wales are ( on the ebb ) quite quick 😅.
Multiplier when your are young a flexible and can pendulum cast easily, fixed spool when you get older. Fixed spools have moved a long way over the past 15-20 years, for 95% of people the fixed will be more than adequate for the distances needed to fish. Judging by the comments as-well that seams to be the consensus.
Hi I use penn 515 and Shimano 1400 xtd and penn 8000 fix spools ,I prefer fishing with a multiplier forsmoothness ,but fixed spools with my Continentals, great line lay on your fixed spool, envy lol also novices don't understand that you have to lay the line on the retrieve otherwise YAHOO birdnests so enjoy your video
I knew fixed spool wood be a winner but it is personal preference. I use the sonik AVX 10000 reel. Love the casting and smoothness on retrieve. Great video Matt 😊😊😊
Multipliers have come a long long way from the early days, My first one at the age of 15 / 16 years of age, a Gilfin 500, I still have it, I'm almost 72 now. I have a good few Multipliers now, many many things have changed over the years, all for the better. They probably can't progress much more, look at the distances being cast, the breaking systems, the run dry bearings, gearings, materials used to build them is superior and lighter. By the same token fixed spool reels have come on in leaps and bounds as well, but I think 🤔 with fixed spool reels there was a far lot more to do, and do it they have. Could they be improved anymore ?? Only time will tell. I love my multipliers, sea fishing, and Jerk baits. Fixed spool reels, all freshwater fishing + I also have a centre pin, Allcocks Flicem. As for me, guess I'm on the fence, as you are Matt, Good that you got Brian in to give his advice / opinion on the topic. Good video too mate. Cheers Les.
@SaltwaterAngler ??? Rwel book ? I guess that's ment to be reel book ?? Not sure if the Gilfin is worth much 🤔. The Alcocks flicem is older than me. The Gilfin has metal cage , I believe the spool is chrome plated brass but I'm not certain, centrifugal brakes were some sort of fibre, ( only two ). The rod was an Edgar Sealey sea wolf, ( I think they called it a reverse double taper ) slim tip, bit thicker around the reel fitting and slightly tapered down to the butt base. The grips were akin to oblong trench cycle grips ( I think 🤔 some sort of plastic). I could probably have made my comment a lot more in depth but I would probably bore you 😴 silly. Cheers mate, keep them coming. Les.
Now that’s another interesting video mr saltwater and it’s a subject that has driven me to seek counselling at one time😉 All my friends use fixed spool for everything but I am billy no mates when it comes to reel choice on the beach but with a ( perhaps ) dyslexic twist . Firstly for general beach fishing and boat it just has to be a multiplier .. I’m useless with a coffee grinding fixed spool , I feel like I’m trying to sweep a floor with no brush on the handle … and when reeling in I feel have to risk testicular rupture with the rod between my legs 😮🫢 can’t do it under arm or holding it out ( I call this erection position) it’s just so unnatural feeling , just can’t do it anyother way 🙄 guess it’s the weight ? And don’t get me commenting on that mangling winding 😉but here’s my twisted mind bit, carp fishing, float fishing or luring for bass it has to be a fixed spool 😵💫 Many have commented there’s no hope for me but with the counselling I’m coming to terms with it slowly …. Still don’t catch much though 🙄 guess that’s why I’m a stinky muppett. Thanks for sharing .
I use both what the hell learn to use a multiplier its great just like driving a car manual or auto auto no crunch manual big bunch of line that is just take it easy good luck
Not really he did do one of their open days as a casting instructor. Brian has that quality where he,s not only good at something but know how to teach it too.

Utter rubbish, mults are still top notch over coffee grinders

Right on

Thankfully I've never bought into the multiplier hype. I'm more than happy with my fixed spools and always have been.
Very helpful I got both I’m just getting into the Multiplyer got Learn how to you it and this video is very helpful to me. Cheers man
Glad to hear it! Check out he bit in slow motion ita at half speed where Brian uses a very relaxed pendulum
I had a ziplex rod and Penn multiplier and sold the lot, went back to my Ryobi fixed spool and Michelle rod with a fold down first ring. Used the back last February and no problem getting out 75 yards. They have been put to bed for now as I have a new set up.

Thanks Mate- yes no big secret but we've come a long way
Coming from a Coarse Fishing background fixed spool every time for me....I just bugger up multiplier reels lol
Multiplier all the way. I use 2 x abu chrome rockets no brakes and never get a birds nest even though reels are fast

Nope back to fixed, very hard using multiplier night fishing.
Yes thats a good point for ease of night fishing .
Thank you for the video - L C
Should never put wd 40 on a fishing reel, it's a degreeser ....it will strip the bearings of greese. It will f*** up all the bearings...
Why would anyone use an overhead reel off the beach??? This seems mad. You trying to hook a 100kg shark or something?
Is he from tonystackle
Not really he did do one of their open days as a casting instructor. Brian has that quality where he,s not only good at something but know how to teach it too.
Baitrunners do the same thing as multiplier ratchets.
