I honestly think this film is way more original than it gets credit for, most people want to just lump it into a category of “cameo heartwarming comedy” but I honestly think that the story is far more compelling than it gets credit for. The way we watch guy change after his AI gets “unlocked” by Millies humming, and how he impacts and changes the other NPCs too. This movie is far more than just a comedy, even though the timing on those jokes is truly special sometimes. @@Dan89201 he didn't say it's the first film he watched since Endgame. He said it's the first he watched since that Endgame THAT HE WAS EXCITED TO REWATCH
Exactly. You know a film was well done and great if it has a great rewatch value, especially the fact that after seeing it for the first time, you just can't get over it reason why we watch videos like this here in YT 😅 The only movie I can think of right now that also did this to me aside from some of those great MCU films like Endgame is Your Name/Kimi No Nawa...considering that I'm also not into serious anime films.
The funniest line in the movie was when the weird man child streamer in his mothers basement said something along the lines of “don’t touch that sock, it’s my sacred sock, your opinion of me will be changed forever” The fact that disney saw that line and was ok with it is a miracle
I'd imagine Disney is not so keen on subtle adult jokes, but if they took out this line, that would have been very bad for the movie, as it would lessen the immersion and believability because everyone's so pretentiously "innocent" because of demands of the Disney corporate overlords.
The only downside to that guy though it's he was really over the top. It was really cringe but it was great at the end of it. The reason why it worked so well coz it was amazing to see those awful lines come out of that hunk of muscle rofl
Glad I wasn't alone from the start of the movie screaming "Elf, Elf inspired this bromance" My mom and I were convinced. So many things at the start reflect Elf.😂🤣 Both are amazing films in their own right.
I enjoyed Free Guy so much. I haven't had this much fun at the cinema since Endgame. I was hoping to like it but I didn't know if I would. I was really surprised to love it as much as I did. It's so sweet and funny and wholesome. I don't know about everyone else but after the past year, I needed something like this film that I could enjoy and experience with strangers and feel that similar Endgame feeling again
Same here!! It was great! Oh probably Spider-man was the other fun one I had since. But there's been few movies that really got me enjoying it as much. Shang Chi did pretty well after free guy though :) I just can't believe some people didn't like end game because there were too many things happening on the screen. That's why it was so amazing! That's why free guy worked so well. So much happening but it was paced and shown well. It was great!! Maybe I should watch free guy again on the weekend lol. Yay for streaming.
Haha I agree. Surprised to know yesterday that he was also in Stranger Things together with Joe Keery, and that he played a character who also has the same name he has in the film _(still haven't watched that series, that's why 😅)_
Yeah, I mean, he said it himself that there was no kiss button. So how did she kiss him. My critical side saw that as an issue, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Honestly while the writers didn't get a lot of deep technical details correct, they kept it simple for all of the non-technical people, and it was still believable enough imo (as a senior developer myself). Honestly I chalk it up to them getting the technical details right, and the way things look inside the game world is just the visual representation of what's happening. It's a little loose, but it still works for me. Also, this is the first movie in a long time to truly feel original. Even though there was some fan service with the Captain America shield (and Steve Rogers), it made sense because video games often have in-game items based on movies (look at Fortnite for example).
It's sad to think that 10-15 years ago this would have been considered a B movie for a younger demo, but because we are so starved for original ideas, this is the most entertaining/uplifting general audience movie we've seen in a while. Let's get off the remake train and start appreciating originals for what they are. Originals. Fun watch 8/10 and the happy ending was refreshing. We've gotten too comfortable with depressing.
I enjoyed your observation on Taika essentially not being that funny, even though he’s riffing with impunity. I’m of the opinion that he’s a naked emperor, but boy is he (and most others) convinced that his new robes are FANTASTIC!

I get what you mean since I've also noticed that they got a lot of inspirations from other famous movies but the point of that claim is that they are the first movie for like, some decades I think, that isn't based on any intellectual properties, hence being "original" just like what Ryan had always said while promoting the movie.
I literally had absolutely NO expectations for this movie. I saw that lots of people liked it and I went to go see it yesterday. Now I say with confidence that this is the movie of 2021. It's sooo fucking good. I really suggest going to see it in theaters. Let's keep Free Guy at #1!!!
@@AntonKruchkin You have to be a DC fanatic in order to say that. But anyway, I already saw both films and I agree with OP that it is movie of the year. Way better, way funnier and way enjoyable than SS2. Not that I'm saying that SS2 is that bad, I'm just saying that Free Guy is way better in every aspect.
There was just one plothole: in the beginning the "Millie" and Joe Keery's character specifically stated that they were just friends, and they still ended up together. Just a little unrealistic, that they have been so close before even the events in the movie took place, and then they got together because of what happened in the movie. This can also be explained by the fact that as I heard they changed the script in the last minute, so the "Guy" and "Millie" don't end up together, but the two live people would. Makes sense though, just a little bit strange.
I feel like Guy was comprised of keerys feelings and millies personality traits. Therefore in theory she was falling in love with herself because of the things she had in common with Guy. So them ending up together in the end didn’t really make sense to me either. But unfortunately Guy isn’t real and they couldn’t have her being with an “NPC” so I guess it makes sense. Although at the end I had hoped they would a version of “Millie” into the game for Guy since he was in love with her.
The director just wanted to say that kids today spend too much time online instead of in real life to the point that they have more courage to express their feelings online and not in real life. It's on the surface, come on. How could you not see that message? Lol
Just saw this movie the other day and all I can truly say about it is that it's *_ADJECTIVE!_* P.S. Shoutout to Jodie too! This film introduced me to her greatness. Hopefully this would open more opportunities for her in Hollywood but I think it already opened I guess since I just discovered the other day upon _researching_ that she's going to also star in an upcoming Ridley Scott film. Good for her!
I didn’t even know what this was about when I went and watched it all I knew was it was Ryan Reynolds and I instantly wanted to watch it. He’s my favorite actor 😂
The RUclipsr cameo was amazing. Not sure why you thought it was so-so. I loved seeing the RUclipsrs on there. The fact that they thought of them and got them as commentary as a meta joke, it just shows how much thought really went into this movie.
I thought tsunami was a rip on Konami... you know the whole stealing Metal Gear from It's creator and turning it into a heartless Survival game cash grab...
The only hang up I have with this movie, which I thoroughly enjoyed, is that if they actually created a self aware AI they would be mega-billionaires overnight. This would be a world shattering event not just a cool new game. I know, I know its just a silly premise for a fun movie but the RL implications of a discovery like this are actually very, very scary.
Funny, I instantly remember that particular dude yesterday that I saw in a comment section of another Free Guy related video who got _way too serious_ about the possible realistic consequences/ramifications of the events within the film, proving how badly written this movie is 😅 Anyway, the movie didn't say that it's not possible for it to happen. I mean they can still be overly famous because of that achievement while also being able to release their own video game for the general public. But the movie and the filmmakers surely decided to focus on the release of the video game instead since it's where the focus of the movie was, not on the possible _realistic_ consequences of their actions or of what they've discovered later on. But yeah, just like the ^other guy said, Keys already brought up the fact that they could win a Nobel prize because of it, implying that it really was a very big deal even in their _world._
Loved this movie. Went absolutely wild when the Phys gun showed up. Also enjoyed when Chris Evans got a cameo after Guy pulled out the Cap Shield. The only cameos I didn't like were every real content creator, except Jacksepticeye. His cameos weren't super Cringe
I think it's cause when you ask a RUclips or streamer to act like somethings really cool it doesn't work as well because they always do it unconsciously
One thing that impressed me was the movies ability to be humorous and self aware/deprecating at times but get me so invested (not just in the leads but in the NPCs as a whole) without me realizing to the point I was actually getting emotional towards the end especially with Buddy
The movie actually reminded me of the Matrix. It's not as much about video games, and more so about values and how people live in the matrix but they can actually do anything they want. Great movie with a great message. It's also about people spending too much time in virtual reality, instead of in real life.
One of my fav parts was that I enjoyed both sides of the movie, the in game stuff and the irl stuff, most times, I only wanna see one side of the movie and not the other but this movie is very different and I love it.
i gave this movie a solid 8/10. i left it at first thinking 7/10, but the more i thought about it the more i liked it. chris evans cameo killed me. so did the line "oh he found the button". i might also have a crush on her she was so adorable in this movie

For years and years and years forever actually mainstream media has ignored internet culture, youtubes, twitches, heck even tiktoks celebrities are footnotes compared to somone who was in a couple successful movies. The thing is RUclips MATTERS, they cant ignore us anymore. One day there will be world where some celebrity like pewDiePie walks that red carpet and is recognized. Big charity events will make the news, articles will be written about the drama and the hot takes and the communities around the internet! Incels cracked down on! Dream smp recognized! Power given to the billions in of people that make up these communities! Yeesh this is long, i feel very strongly about this, anyway exited for the future, whos with me?!
Watched this movie a couple days ago in an airplane. Laughed way louder than I probably should’ve when the Captain America shield and then Chris Evans showed up. Definitely enjoyed the movie. It was cast perfectly. Can’t wait to see what comes next in the story!
I just watched this the other night and loved it. As a gamer I appreciated the jokes only gamers get because it didn't feel like someone writing something to Target a specific audience but only scratching the surface level and not doing the research or trying to appeal to a demographic that they know nothing about. I loved the cammyos from actual streamers and RUclipsrs like Jacksepticeye and when Chris Evans came up and they started playing the Avengers music I lost my mind. It was a solid movie.
Love pretty much everything about this movie. Don’t know if its purely original but nothing really is. It brought together ideas jokes and themes that I’ve seen in other things but did it in a not over the top preaching way
The point of that claim is that they're the first film in like, decades I think, that isn't based on any intellectual property like a novel or a comic series. But yeah, it pretty much got a lot of inpirations from other famous movies like Matrix, The Truman Show, They Live, Ready Player One, Lego Movie, etc.
This is "Lego Movie," but with video games. "Yes to which?" "Yes to all." 😂😂😂💖 "We're Disney now, so we gotta up our merchandising game." 😂😂😂💖 Can't wait to see what happens with Deadpool. Hopefully we get a 3rd.
i can't imagine disney not doing a 3rd deadpool movie. the first two did really well and disney will want to cash in on that. now whether or not they handcuff the movie is a different story.
3:58 That was an aspect of the film that I thought was simultaneously bizarre and hilarious. As their creation, Keys and Millie are effectively Guy's parents. Guy tries to get with his mother and cucks his father. In a discussion with my friend after the movie, I described their love triangle as "Oedipus Cuck".
OH GOD I did not expect to see a greek myth here I also thought about the mother thing, especially when Steve (I know it's Keys, but I just can't see him as anybody else, he'll always be Steve to me) said "You created him!". And with the "He's four years old" my mind was just screaming "Hey WAIT A SECOND, this is kinda f*cked up!"
Did anyone notice that Guy's glasses get lighter as the movie progresses? He starts with dark sunglasses in the beginning but they get gradually lighter. By the end they are just glasses.
A legit Guy costume is much harder than you imagine (if you don’t order from Amazon). I live in San Diego, I TRIED to find “free guy,” clothes that actually fit and look sharp like his do. I act like Guy and the few people that I know who saw the movie told me I had to go see it and dress like him for our Halloween party at work. I loved it! Every part of the movie, no criticisms whatsoever. So I ride a red Ducati motorcycle, my favorite shirt for nearly ten years was a baby blue three button Henley (I’m wearing it in my Linked in profile pic), I’m 6’1” 170 lbs with light brown hair. So I look somewhat like Ryan (ok he’s obviously better looking). I also just picked up a pair of thick soled bright blue carbon fiber running shoes (just happen to be about the same price as the movie pair 😬) the day before seeing the movie. I spent the next month thinking that it would be super easy to find a pair of light colored, athletic fit kakis, a short sleeved athletic fit, light blue button down with a pocket and NO PATTERNS OR LOGOS!!! All I can say is “good luck!” I did eventually find a new Henley, and a pair of kakis that were not quite right (as well as a button down but with a logo). But to get movie accurate stuff is hard to just find.
It shares a whole chunk with the matrix. A female leads a blank slate to discover he's special and exists as part of a manipulative system. He believes and tries to help, but he dies (his memory is wiped) and is brought back to life by her kiss.
this movie is not for those who never played a PC or PS game in their life, it is easy to appreciate what the movie producer and actors did if you played games before, also easier to understand and see the things that happen in the background.
So did Disney makes this "in theaters only" because ScarJo? Was Reynolds contract that iron-clad, or do they just respect him more than her? Because they released Jungle Cruise via streaming, so it's not that they "learned their lesson"...
The director has said that Disney execs were at a test screening and saw "euphoric" audience reactions, and they felt that this movie should best be experienced in the theaters. So presumably they didn't have as much faith with their earlier movies that got day-and-date releases.
I loved Free Guy and saw it in theaters like it was meant too. Man I couldn’t help myself when I was watching Jodie Comer. I will definitely buy Free Guy on Blu-ray!
About the Star Wars and Marvel "easter eggs"... They literally had to include them... you have an open world MMO that can be related to real world games like GTAO. And just like in GTAO you have people modding the game, they get caught, they get banned, they get new accounts and come back. And some of the most popular mods for just messing around and having fun are the Ironman mod, Hulk mod, and lightsaber mod. These are a know element that modders/hackers have introduced into online games. And this makes guys character ever better. When guy reveals that in his inventory, all these weapons he has taken from other people, he has Caps shield, Hulks Fist, a lightsaber... this means that Guy became so powerful in game that he was able to take out modders. You have people in the real world who become modders just so they can block other modders, and here a NPC was able to defeat those modders. To me this is a critical part of the movie and it is necessary to do this world justice.
I watched it the other night, and just laughed. Yeah, there was a carp ton of fan service, but hearing the Avengers theme then Taika asking, "Is that a lightsaber"... That is just funny. Lastly, as an OG WoW Tauren Shaman, I enjoyed the fan service. (As a coder, well, I let things pass by) But as Taika dragged the axe in the server room across the floor like he was an anime villain, I couldn't stop smiling.
I was very bummed that the movie was in fact not free. Quite possibly the biggest scam since ‘The Never Ending Story’

Don't think about super hi-tech sunglasses which can control world conquering drones. Just think of a knife. If tony gave Peter a hi-tech classy very sharp knife, should he just give it to Quentin Beck? It was not only irresponsible, but was also disrespectful.
@@Dan89201 he didn't say it's the first film he watched since Endgame. He said it's the first he watched since that Endgame THAT HE WAS EXCITED TO REWATCH

Exactly. You know a film was well done and great if it has a great rewatch value, especially the fact that after seeing it for the first time, you just can't get over it reason why we watch videos like this here in YT 😅
The only movie I can think of right now that also did this to me aside from some of those great MCU films like Endgame is Your Name/Kimi No Nawa...considering that I'm also not into serious anime films.
That MolotovGirl gimmick is going to be cosplayed so hard at comic-cons and will be a big Halloween costume in the next few years

The funniest line in the movie was when the weird man child streamer in his mothers basement said something along the lines of “don’t touch that sock, it’s my sacred sock, your opinion of me will be changed forever”
The fact that disney saw that line and was ok with it is a miracle
It was "You will go to therapy forever if you touch those socks!"
I'd imagine Disney is not so keen on subtle adult jokes, but if they took out this line, that would have been very bad for the movie, as it would lessen the immersion and believability because everyone's so pretentiously "innocent" because of demands of the Disney corporate overlords.
YES. my partner and i laughed our arses off at that.
The only downside to that guy though it's he was really over the top. It was really cringe but it was great at the end of it. The reason why it worked so well coz it was amazing to see those awful lines come out of that hunk of muscle rofl
@@triadwarfare but there are so many in the animated movies from the 90s
Shang Chi did pretty well after free guy though :)
I just can't believe some people didn't like end game because there were too many things happening on the screen. That's why it was so amazing! That's why free guy worked so well. So much happening but it was paced and shown well. It was great!!
Maybe I should watch free guy again on the weekend lol. Yay for streaming.
When I saw this I think the biggest laugh in the whole movie was the guy playing as Channing Tatum’s character.
Haha I agree. Surprised to know yesterday that he was also in Stranger Things together with Joe Keery, and that he played a character who also has the same name he has in the film _(still haven't watched that series, that's why 😅)_
@Nobody No not when he first shows up but when they’re at his compound.
I legit thought he was gonna get his memory back through her singing Fantasy but I guess the fast forward to the kiss thing works too 😂
Yeah, I mean, he said it himself that there was no kiss button. So how did she kiss him. My critical side saw that as an issue, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
@@MajWinters100 couldn’t have put it any better
@@MajWinters100 yea that was such a big plothole and it bothered me a lot after seeing that scene but the movie was still great
Honestly while the writers didn't get a lot of deep technical details correct, they kept it simple for all of the non-technical people, and it was still believable enough imo (as a senior developer myself).
I was just glad to have an action movie that didn’t feel the need to make me cry tbh
What kind of action movies are you crying at?
Or an action movie that was light hearted and not all in your face?
I still cried in this one.. when the whole guy was like “maybe this is a love letter to you, someone in the real world wrote me for you”
I’m just a crybaby…
I enjoyed your observation on Taika essentially not being that funny, even though he’s riffing with impunity.
I’m of the opinion that he’s a naked emperor, but boy is he (and most others) convinced that his new robes are FANTASTIC!
He seems like he would be insufferable to be around for even 3 minutes.
@@valkyrie9646 I’ve seen him interviewed on a number of occasions and he’s definitely in that Jeff Goldblum realm of “amn’t I just undeniably handsome, quirkily funny but fascinatingly weird…all…at the same time?!! (replete with jazz hands, raised eyebrows and shit eating smirk).
I’d love for them to meet Anton Chigurh and ask him “what’s with the tank?”
I'm terribly glad to see this in my queue today. My husband fought an incredibly hard but futile battle with cancer. During the last 6 months of his life, he watched Free Guy repeatedly. Even his nurses knew the movie by heart. He laughed and laughed, enjoying hell out of it each playthrough. And though I laughed right along with him, I haven't been able to watch it since he died last year.
Thanks this video. Yes, it's 2 years old and I just got here. But the video and the comments have given me a bit of my joy back. I think I'm ready to enjoy Free Guy again. 369 days and I think I'm ready to do something besides cry.
So, yeah. Thanks. 💋
Man, I loved this! It just had a nearly perfect mixture of romance, action, comedy and emotion. Definitely a 10/10, would watch again and again.
...and everybody missed the best catch phrase ever!!!!: "Oh, he found the button!"

I didn't understand why people loved the movie so much but when I watched today I understand why, it is soooo good I loved it and would definitely watch it over again
Didn’t think I’d love this movie as much as I did
“Albuquerque boiled turkey” had my theater cracking up
When you understand there’s no original thoughts you understand that this is an original movie. All moves are inspired.

Free Guy was great. I enjoyed it and laughed a lot. Can't wait to watch it many more times
Of course Disney wants a sequel. That's what they do: beat an IP into the ground!
Lol
The "I rode a man" joke had me dying honestly.
Just saw this movie the other day and all I can truly say about it is that it's *_ADJECTIVE!_*
P.S.
Shoutout to Jodie too! This film introduced me to her greatness. Hopefully this would open more opportunities for her in Hollywood but I think it already opened I guess since I just discovered the other day upon _researching_ that she's going to also star in an upcoming Ridley Scott film. Good for her!
Haven't watched, but Disney definitely did the right thing. Let the man do his talent unchecked. He's brilliant, they are all brilliant.
I didn’t even know what this was about when I went and watched it all I knew was it was Ryan Reynolds and I instantly wanted to watch it. He’s my favorite actor 😂
I wasn't really looking forward to seeing this but a friend wanted to. Honestly, it was a lot better than expected
I think freeguy did the fan service scene well.
The RUclipsr cameo was amazing. Not sure why you thought it was so-so. I loved seeing the RUclipsrs on there. The fact that they thought of them and got them as commentary as a meta joke, it just shows how much thought really went into this movie.
I left the movie with far too many existential questions. It was good!
At 7:41, I was almost like, 'Is that Dax Shepard?!?'
“Several Fortnites ago” is an underrated joke
I thought tsunami was a rip on Konami... you know the whole stealing Metal Gear from It's creator and turning it into a heartless Survival game cash grab...
In a way it's like a fusion of all the worst "AAA" studios wrapped up in one clickbait-sequalbait-unoriginal-to-a-fault package
I mean, they brought up in the middle of the movie somewhere that they could get a nobel prize
Funny, I instantly remember that particular dude yesterday that I saw in a comment section of another Free Guy related video who got _way too serious_ about the possible realistic consequences/ramifications of the events within the film, proving how badly written this movie is 😅
Anyway, the movie didn't say that it's not possible for it to happen.
That idea has definitely come up in sci-fi before, but yeah, when it's handled realistically, those aren't comedies...
Me and my friends loved when dude said "I can bench press a sentence" after guy saying he cant form one
This film was great, it crafts fun a story around the concept of free will. And was just enjoyable all around.
When Chris Evans said "what the shit" they should have had a cameo of Robert Downey Jr. saying "language". That would have really been hilarious.
Wolverine calling Deadpool "a completely entitled fucking asshole" just made my day is so hilarious.
The Tsunami, Blizzard, Avalanche joke sent me!

I am 63 and this was totally entertaining for me. I would love to play a game that Keys and Millie were creating!!
I'm just glad it was actually funny I knew the action would be good but the humor is always hit or miss luckily it hit the bullseye this time

OH GOD
I did not expect to see a greek myth here
I also thought about the mother thing, especially when Steve (I know it's Keys, but I just can't see him as anybody else, he'll always be Steve to me) said "You created him!".

Ryan Reynolds as Guy kept on reminding me of when he played Jerry from The Voices lol. Only he can pull off these characters imo
Don't forget, it also took some concepts from the movie They Live.
This movie is just a connections flex
Did anyone notice that Guy's glasses get lighter as the movie progresses? He starts with dark sunglasses in the beginning but they get gradually lighter. By the end they are just glasses.
Because he can see everything clearer as he goes along
@1:33 I almost thought Deadpool was going to break through dropping a F bomb instead of saying "Full On"
4:25 that’s ... O_o

this movie is not for those who never played a PC or PS game in their life, it is easy to appreciate what the movie producer and actors did if you played games before, also easier to understand and see the things that happen in the background.
So did Disney makes this "in theaters only" because ScarJo? Was Reynolds contract that iron-clad, or do they just respect him more than her? Because they released Jungle Cruise via streaming, so it's not that they "learned their lesson"...
The contract was different before this film was acquired under 20th Century.
This makes no sense. The movie is 20th century fox not Disney. So even mentioning ScarJo is not valid
The director has said that Disney execs were at a test screening and saw "euphoric" audience reactions, and they felt that this movie should best be experienced in the theaters. So presumably they didn't have as much faith with their earlier movies that got day-and-date releases.
Jodie Comer was already great in Killing Eve (Show) where she also does lots of accents and different looks, also checkout My Mad Fat Diary.
Funny that you cite "GTAO" when Fortnite is RIGHT THERE
Like, literally, Free City is just Fortnite but "open world" instead of Battle Royale

Lastly, as an OG WoW Tauren Shaman, I enjoyed the fan service. (As a coder, well, I let things pass by) But as Taika dragged the axe in the server room across the floor like he was an anime villain, I couldn't stop smiling.
