Ging isn’t a bad guy but the underlying message is clear: biology doesn’t ensure someone is a good parent. Kite and some of the other characters of the show so much better parental instincts than Ging does even when being adversarial to him.
I actually agree that he isn't entirely a bad guy, just a very flawed person due to experience. He's most likely done every accomplishment in his life by himself, the only problem is that he did it willingly, while Gon, who he assumed should be the same simply because he's his son, genuinely needed a father figure in his life. It's really great that Ging has strived this much but this is also why greatness can come with many flaws. Seriously, this show's amazing.

To be honest I was 100% certain Ging was gonna make a break for it right before Gon showed up. TO BE FAIR that would have kept in line with what he said in the tape he left for him. "Yeah you just missed him, he heard you were coming and booked it"
The series went with the idea that that's Gon's "Dad" but not his Father/Parent. Ging probably didn't want a kid so he basically put him up for adoption. He cares for Gon but he didn't wanna put his life on hold to be a parent. Part of the reason Gon doesn't refer to him as Dad all the time but always refers to Mito when asked as his mother.
Ging cares. He tracked Gon's whole journey and trusted Gon's friends to save his life. He may have not been there for Gon after Mito forced Ging to give up raising his son, but he did care about Gon.
Ging is a bum ass dad but he is a free spirited person and still bonded with Gon towards the end of the series. So it's not all bad. He wanted to be on his own selfish journey but at the same time he wanted Gon to be stronger, independent, carve his own path and it's kinda like a tough love thing. He made me laugh in the end though with the crowd 🤣.
I love how whenever Ging's aloofness was presented to Gon, Gon would just smile with determination. Like in the recording he left Gon when he said he didn't want to see him, Gon just smiles. Personally, from all the clues and elaborate tests Ging put Gon through to find him, I think it's an awesome father-son dynamic. Leerio uppercutting Ging was funny but when the crowd starting cheering it became absolutely hilarious.
Gon should not have to ask for his dad to go see him. Any decent person would say that you should go this is one of those things that if you do care about someone and they in the shape gon in and all you don't think you go. Were it my kid I'd have gone even if they hated me and or were mad at me.

Ging does care for Gon as his son, but he wasn't ready to be a father and admit himself he never will be. Gon respects and admires Ging as an idol, an uncle, an amazing relative, but isn't all that attached to him in the way children to their parents. Hence Gon treats Ging more like a friend, and Ging also accept the fact that Gon wouldn't admire him the same way towards Mito from the start as his punishment for 12 years of neglecting.
Ging’s actions are a lot deeper than “he’s a horrible father so that means he’s total scum”, he just acts on his will, he’s selfish as any Hunter (if a fair bit more so). He didn’t go to visit Gon cause he was confident Gon was going to live, he even states this to Pariston when he asks Ging the exact same question Leorio did. Aleczandxrs made a video essay of Ging’s character, it’s actually very deep and showcases why Ging is much more than the archetypal neglectful father people perceive him as.
I have a feeling about Ging’s feelings for Gon. I think being a father/relationships intimidate him in some way and he feels he can’t handle it. He cares about him and others, but he distanced himself out of fear rather than a desire to be free. He may seem free, but in reality, fear of responsibility, intimacy and/or failure has him trapped in some way. He does not seem to be able to express his feelings, even when he find out his former student Kite was killed/reborn. I have a feeling Gon’s mom may have something to do with why he is this way. This is just speculation though. I’m not sure. Hxh is still on hiatus and we can’t find out until later.

The series went with the idea that that's Gon's "Dad" but not his Father/Parent. Ging probably didn't want a kid so he basically put him up for adoption. He cares for Gon but he didn't wanna put his life on hold to be a parent. Part of the reason Gon doesn't refer to him as Dad all the time but always refers to Mito when asked as his mother.

Ging cares. He tracked Gon's whole journey and trusted Gon's friends to save his life. He may have not been there for Gon after Mito forced Ging to give up raising his son, but he did care about Gon.

Ging is a bum ass dad but he is a free spirited person and still bonded with Gon towards the end of the series. So it's not all bad. He wanted to be on his own selfish journey but at the same time he wanted Gon to be stronger, independent, carve his own path and it's kinda like a tough love thing.
He made me laugh in the end though with the crowd 🤣.

I love how whenever Ging's aloofness was presented to Gon, Gon would just smile with determination. Like in the recording he left Gon when he said he didn't want to see him, Gon just smiles. Personally, from all the clues and elaborate tests Ging put Gon through to find him, I think it's an awesome father-son dynamic.
Leerio uppercutting Ging was funny but when the crowd starting cheering it became absolutely hilarious.
Gon should not have to ask for his dad to go see him. Any decent person would say that you should go this is one of those things that if you do care about someone and they in the shape gon in and all you don't think you go. Were it my kid I'd have gone even if they hated me and or were mad at me.

Ging does care for Gon as his son, but he wasn't ready to be a father and admit himself he never will be. Gon respects and admires Ging as an idol, an uncle, an amazing relative, but isn't all that attached to him in the way children to their parents. Hence Gon treats Ging more like a friend, and Ging also accept the fact that Gon wouldn't admire him the same way towards Mito from the start as his punishment for 12 years of neglecting.

Ging’s actions are a lot deeper than “he’s a horrible father so that means he’s total scum”, he just acts on his will, he’s selfish as any Hunter (if a fair bit more so).
He didn’t go to visit Gon cause he was confident Gon was going to live, he even states this to Pariston when he asks Ging the exact same question Leorio did.
Aleczandxrs made a video essay of Ging’s character, it’s actually very deep and showcases why Ging is much more than the archetypal neglectful father people perceive him as.

I have a feeling about Ging’s feelings for Gon. I think being a father/relationships intimidate him in some way and he feels he can’t handle it. He cares about him and others, but he distanced himself out of fear rather than a desire to be free. He may seem free, but in reality, fear of responsibility, intimacy and/or failure has him trapped in some way.
He does not seem to be able to express his feelings, even when he find out his former student Kite was killed/reborn. I have a feeling Gon’s mom may have something to do with why he is this way.
This is just speculation though. I’m not sure. Hxh is still on hiatus and we can’t find out until later.

You’re basically right. He said he didn’t feel like he could be a father because he’s selfish (hunters are naturally selfish according to him), so that’s why he left. Gon made the decision to go searching for Ging, even after Ging’s warning him not to. Mostly because he didn’t want to be found/want to meet Gon. People forget this though. He even made the quest nearly impossible, so that Ging wouldn’t find him😭💔 yet people get mad at him, when everything he warned Gon about was just the truth🤷🏾♀️🙃
