The Soothing Ambient And Microtonal Depths of a Decopunk Synthesizer

  • This is the Soma Terra, a microtonal digital synthesizer released just this year. Soma send it to me a while back for feedback, but I only got to play it now (sorry Vlad), as I felt this instruments deserves time and space to learn. And I was rewarded. Terra is a digital synthesizer in a shape that seems archaic, like a Decopunk harp straight from Bioshock. It has an interface that takes the touch keyboard experiments that Don Buchla pioneered further, making for a very responsive instrument. It uses specially coated sensor to translate touch into control.
    Terra allows a while range of tones, from soothing ambient to screaming microtonal noise, with an impressive range of expression. But it has its quirks that relate to directly to the minimalism of its design.

      was there not any ethical, political dilemma for you to praise the russian company Soma? who did never say a word about the russian war. never replied to those who asked. instead they even made videos (for their 'rumble' device) with russia-hailng billboards in the occupied Crimea. Vlad had funny videos out on the days of the most vicious bombings. amidst the war they issued a 'military' edition Pulsar, while Vlad personally posted pics of the fascist musician Letov. right on the next day after the war broke out, he also called his russian-speaking fans not to 'give in to the informational bombardment' (sic!), and keep money in banks - as that's what worries him most.
      compare this attitude to guys from XAOS for example, a Polish company. or even to some musicians from russia. while Soma tries hard to represent themselves as a Polish company, it's not even true - they still run the moscow office, still hire people, and given their sales in russia are minimal, guess where those money come from.

      I feel like that about the Lyra 8 and Mood mkII. I prefer the Lyra's timbre, and form factor. But the Terra is lovely for sure. Would like a Cosmos too though. They're builders of fascinating instruments, rather than just being technological tools. It's great that new instruments like these are being designed and built. Or even hats off to Moog too, for making the Subharmonicon. Or Boss' DM-101 is a nice surprise too. The small boutique builders are waking up the music giants.

    Terra is a paradigm shift in human to instrument connection and interaction. It benefits are only fully shown when one doesn't necessarily play it in a traditional way by playing staccato or normal long notes, but when at the same time playing the notes and modulating the parameters on the left side; that's when Terra really unleashes its full sonic potential and blows your mind

    Lovely overview of Terra. Such an awesome instrument. Sometimes when I look at Terra I wonder if it still makes sense to make Wiggler, but the two are very different. Terra has much more abstract control of the sound, whereas Wiggler is super literal like an analog synth. And I think Wiggler is a bit more optimized for vibrato. After Wiggler I'd like to make a more abstract synth engine like Terra, because for a truly expressive synth the patch is often too complex to describe in 10-20 knobs.

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  10 месяцев назад +2

      Wiggler is something different I feel - the sense of resistance makes for a very different experience in playing. Terra is way softer to touch.

IOW, will boycotting SOMA help end the invasion sooner? Other than by starving the people and making them desperate, which won't happen, so it shouldn't be considered. @@Peter_S_ Let's translate your comment into something you can understand.
      You're using the internet, something created by DARPA (an R&D agency of the US Department of Defense to create products for the US military) in the 1970s. Every time you watch a US-made film, you're providing money to film studios, which in turn provides money for the US government. And, every time you speak English, you're allowing the Americans to have some soft power. Do you see how ridiculous this is now?
      I do get your stance (after all, the government of Russia has decided to invade Ukraine), but boycotting a boutique synth company isn't going to stop the Russian government from manufacturing weapons, bombing, and sending troops to Ukraine. All it's going to do is starve the people working there, and they may be anti-war. They just want to make a good synth that people can use to express themselves. Not everything that comes out of Russia is bad. Being born in a specific country isn't and shouldn't be a crime.
      Also, by lumping a nation's people together as a monolith, you're doing the exact thing that the Russian government is doing to the people of Ukraine. Labeling them as XYZ, dehumanising them with slurs, excluding them because they're not "your kind". Don't be that kind of person. I can understand the anger, especially if you're Ukrainian, but please don't direct it at the Russian people. They didn't choose their government (elections are rigged in Russia), and they don't want this war. The supporters of this are a very vocal minority, and even then, people are forced to go to pro-government rallies or they lose their jobs, so they reluctantly go.
      Not everything is black and white. This is especially true for the Russian people.

      @@GizzyDillespee based take. i really hate people like that, who think just by boycotting one small company who's probably making small little blips in government money terms, they can somehow convince the Russian government that to stop sending troops.
      It's like boycotting American products just because the US military did very bad things in the past. The government's still going to get its money, the military's still intact, sure there might be a tiny drop but the government's the government, and all the people will do is just laugh. It would be a great day if they learned that boycotting only works en masse, and for a prolonged time.

    Watching you play this weird slab of a log is a strange feeling. Somehow, I was reminded of JFK's "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. ruclips.net/video/qK1ol_IG77c/видео.htmlsi=P4LjGxR11Bd1LPJw
    You might be on the other side of the world from me, but you feel close enough to share a beer with. I fucking love that. Howdy, neighbor. Love from Texas.
