I recently got hooked watching your videos. Never thought I'd see a picture of my mom on one of them. I was 12 years old when my mother, Karen Wetterhahn, died. Obviously it was a hard time and while the story is way more intricate and devastating, I think you did a good job describing its shortened version. It's always interesting reading or hearing stories from the people on the onside when we were the ones living it.

It's so sad to think such a tiny piece of metal could have saved that young woman's life.
My heart goes out to that truck driver. I hope that poor man found some peace after that. It was absolutely not his fault and I hope the guilt doesn't haunt him forever. What a tragic position to be in.

He noticed something was wrong with the way the truck was performing and as he was working it out I looked out the passenger window and saw one of the tires rolling at 50 mph up the embankment by the freeway. Luckily no one was in the way. In our case, the lug nut studs had sheared off somehow. We only lost the outer tire but it would pack quite a force.

The husband wouldn’t keep a job half the time and was a alcoholic , she was such a sweet kind women, I was a teenager when this happen and now as an adult when I think about it, I know those children must of had a hard life growing up after they lost their mother.

As an automation mechanic, a 25 cent failure can cause thousands of dollars in damage and potential injury. Eastern flight 401 crashed because a $10 landing gear indicator light on the control panel wasn't working, and the resulting decisions killed a bunch of people. Complacency is the enemy of safety. Meg's story is a sobering reminder of why doing things right and taking the time to double check your work is important because even flawless mechanics unknowingly install flawed parts. You do all you can when safety is involved.

Another tip for sharing the road with truckers: if a semi gets in the left lane to let someone merge from an entrance ramp, DON'T then try to pass them on the right. Just ride behind them and let them merge back over. Otherwise, they end up stuck in the left lane and, inevitably, traffic gets slowed down in both lanes.
Also, ZIPPER MERGE, people. If, when at a bottle neck, every car let one car merge in front of them instead of trying to shoehorn past them, traffic would literally keep flowing. In boot camp, different groups would use zipper merging in the hallways and it was beautiful. No one missed a beat. If all drivers did this, the world would be a better place. And, yes, it's mentioned in your driver's ed books and is considered the best method in merging situations.
Also. Use turn signals and refresh yourself on right of way laws. Okay, now I'm just ranting. But the more you know, right?

Yes, yes, I "knew" Edwin Booth had recently saved Robert Lincoln's life, and that then his unsuccessful reprobate brother assassinated Abraham Lincoln, but not in the way I know it now. Mr Ballen really brings home the awesome humanity of eveyone involved, as he does in every story he tells. Equally important is to know these things in case you *do* breach safety protocols! That way, you can receive prescribed prophylaxis. Oftentimes, if you're able to seek medical treatment proactively, toxic metals (any other toxins) can be medically assisted in removal. Even if there isn't a direct treatment, early intervention can offer supportive care while the body removes toxins. This isn't always true, but it's why it's so important to never just brush off a breach of protocol and move on hoping nothing will happen.

Those big corporations don't want employees, they want sacrifices. There are so many terrifying cases of it. There was another one in OK where a woman was disappeared over exposing these corporations not caring about safety. Its also so you don't have an accident, but also the 1st thing. Look at Dupont. Virtually everything in your car will break them down. If you have to mess with anything toxic I suggest you pour a little on a glove and come back in a couple of hours. Plus, the teacher was also a coach who apparently loved baseball. He interspersed his short lectures on history with a ton of open conversation (with the boys, of course) on baseball. So we girls mostly had private chats, with a little studying now & then. I had no trouble passing tests, but surely did not learn very much World History - still don't know what I should. What I have learned comes mostly from reading on my own and from my very smart husband of 61 years who has always been a history buff. Neither of us went to college & have been completely happy about that. Before retiring I was a bookkeeper/office mgr., and he was a Deputy Sheriff.

That is so very true. The human body is fragile when you think of all the fast and/or heavy things that surround us everyday. That's why farming is one of the most dangerous occupations. Many people have been killed by a tractor flipping over on them because they picked up a huge bale of hay the wrong way. Cattle can get overly excited and trample a farmer to death. My own grandfather broke his leg real bad when his cows knocked him over in the field in their excitement to eat the sweet feed he was pouring out for them. A stomp to the head or chest could have done him in that day. That wheel thing at the rest area really takes the cake though. No way anyone could see that coming. All of the timing of everything had to be perfect for that girl to die in that manner.

There was another freak fatal accident in Iowa on I-80. A cargo strap buckle broke off a semi and flew through the windshield of a car which was in the next lane. The buckle struck the female driver in the head killing her instantly. The buckle was intact which means the strap attached to it had broken. The semi driver had no idea anything happened and continued on. IIRC it was at night so no direct witnesses even though I-80 is usually very busy with LOTS of truck traffic.
I've seen multiple videos of single truck tires coming off and rolling/bouncing incredible distances, wrecking lots of metal along the way. Never heard of both dual wheels coming off and missing a single spring washer on one lug nut will not cause that failure.

Yeah, but I don't understand those critics of people in movies, where they blatantly make stupid moves and the critics are like: "how dumb and unrealistic" - no, people are really that dumb or even worse than in some movies.
Let's take a scene from not the best movie out there but still, Alien: Covenant, the lab scene. The girl bringing in the infected one to the infirmary on the ship and the other one, who did not want to touch him at all and was asking the group that came out to return faster. Anyway, they bring the guy on the table, the blonde one rips the infected man's shirt off and immediately some blood poured on her face from the guy's back. She's petrified and goes into fight or flight mode, chooses the latter and locks the brunette girl with the now having a seizure guy. The brunette girls screams at her to let her out, but the blonde one says she has to contain the infection, even though she herself can be infected by that blood splatter. She even tells this her husband through the communications. Lastly, she musters up courage to go shoot the alien, which by now killed the brunette girl. She trips on blood shooting the ceiling and tries to close the door behind her which injures her leg. What happens later is of no concern to our debate.
People criticize her for not letting the brunette girl out - she was just a pilot and a mechanic, she wasn't a soldier. She followed her basic instincts, which was survival. She was hoping she did not get infected and that closing the door was the right thing to do. She was selfish, maybe, but the horror she saw made her unreasonable, do stupid things, think illogical, only at the end she mustered up some courage to try and rescue the brunette girl, when it wasvobviously too late, but she tried. Then she ran, took another weapon and just wanted to shoot it, without realising her surroundings, hitting the fuel tanks and kaboom goes the entire ship.
I think many girls would be screaming in horror, not knowing what to do and act completely illogical too. And all those criticizing that part are saying what they would do. In hindsight and knowing what they're dealing with, but they forget the characters in the movie have no idea aliens exist, nor how to handle them if they're not a soldier, nor how to handle them at all, nor how would they react in that specific situation. And seeing YT people do far worse idiotic, unreasonable, illogical things. And seeing all those scary pranks some people really do fall over when escaping, especially when someone's firing a gun.
      That's all.

For example, Edwin and John Wilkes Booth both took extremely large dumps 5 minutes before their respective encounters with the Lincoln’s; and the Lincoln’s both had both farted many times into a toilet expecting to take dumps, but were constipated from too much cheese. The farts were enjoyable however.
