You're getting ripped off... sorry. But that's a common practice of "professional" nail techs. If you have someone who is above board, they're not going to charge you for gel NAILS & there's no powder for anything on gel nails. I would say you're getting acrylic with gel POLISH. I charge $10 more for gel NAILS. They cure with UV. Acrylic is the brush in the liquid & then the powder & cures with time. You should not be charged for gel NAILS is you're getting acrylic. Yes, I'm a trained professional There are many chop shops out there & I don't advise anyone going to them.
So I go to the nail salon and ask for gels nails, I pay $50 and they use acrylic powder? Next time even if there is a next time, Im just going to ask for acrylic, save money..
PineapplesBxtch same thing with me I just got mine today. I Asked for the gel and they said the total was 38$ then when it was time to pay it was a total of 50 -_-. I didn't feel like arguing so I left next time I'll just get straight up acrylics.
same thing here.. the nail lady talked the whole time about how "nail salons were ripping people off by using acrylic instead of gel" and then proceeded to use powder on me.. I payed 45$ n gave a 5$ tip ..She also quoted a different price too.. and today before i learned she ripped me off, I called her n asked how much a gel fill would be? She asked if I got "gel nail color or regular" and quoted me a price of $25 f-ing dollars just for a fill !! . She must've used gel nail polish tho , because she use the uv light to cure it.. ill never put myself in that position, to get rolled by these Asian mail salons again..
The only thing I wish this video would have mentioned is what the differences are between the two when it comes to removing them. Are they both able to be removed at home? Actually, I'd also like to know which is more durable.
i would really love this video too! also, the infill differences, is it possible with the gel in the same way you can with acrylic, or would you have to remove it and begin again
+Nail Career Education I have a question for you, I'm going to be getting my nails done soon but I have a problem. I do not want tip extentions put on my nails they absolutely ruin them and it takes months to heal up and grow back to normal. But I have no idea if the place I go to can do that... So I'm kind of freaking out and unsure of what to ask and what to say.
One time I was getting my nails done and requested gel and they did regular acrylic and afterwards they tried to charge me the gel price and when I told them no because they didn't do gel they tried to say they were gonna call the police for "stealing". I was like what??? So basically i do my nails by myself now and your videos really help
Thanks for informative video. Just got a question, do you think acrylic system will be phase out and completely be replaced by gel system in the future? I asked because I notice that some salons are promoting gel more than acrylic now.
That's a great questions - answer - NEVER - acrylic RULES- a study done awhile back showed 75% of clients want Acrylic - they know it's stronger and more durable and versatile - trouble is finding a tech that's skilled at applying it 😀
This helps so much! I have had so much trouble understanding this. I've asked a few artists in the past and they had a hard time explaining it to me. Sometimes it was more of just a language beerier, but sometimes I don't think they actually new.
When ever I go to the salon they ask if I want gel or acrylic they say gel cost more but it's stronger so I get gel have they just been using acrylic because it has always been powder ?
Yes, if it's in a powder then they have been using acrylic. I've had so many people come to me for gel and be shocked at how different the procedure is to what they are used to, because they have really been having acrylic
it is acrylic , they just apply a gel top coat ( sealer ) layer on and called it gel :). now they have shellac, gelac, gelish blah blah and these are call gel colors. gel colors use to replace the polish colors because they last a little longer, but they do not add strength / length like the gel builder does.
Thanks for this video! I see now that I'm being charged for gel nails but I've actually been given acrylic powder each time. I know now. It's a shame that businesses are ripping folks off like this...#neverAGAIN
Thank you for this video. When the acrylic is removed from the nails properly, why is the natural nail weak and paper thin? Many people who get acrylics complain about that so they keep getting it done because once it's off, the nail tears, splits, rips, breaks etc. Whatever nail growth is achieved, once the acrylic is off the nail is short as it can be. This is the reason why many people feel that gel is better because of the results from acrylic. If you could please explain this Ms. Susie that would be totally helpful. Also should the nail tech use a drill so acrylic can be applied? At certain salons they will only apply the acrylic if they use the drill even if you would rather them file the nailbed by hand. So should you ever use the electric drill on the natural nail? Thanks Suzie
I actually like odorless acrylic. (Not that I’m a professional) but when you file it has a tacky layer on the top that stops dust from flying everywhere.
Gel nails are on the way out and I'm relieved. I'm training to be a nail tech right now and I just tried my first gel set the other day. The white for a French gel tip is the consistency of runny-ish toothpaste. So hard to smooth out with the flat brush I was given! Still, I think it looks more natural than acrylic in the long run.
+Verica Vuckovic Neither acrylic nor gel are damaging to the nail. the only damage done to the nail is by an inexperienced nail technician. Gel has a few pros over acrylic like the time you have to sculpt and the lack of an odor, but an experienced technician and a good, well ventilated salon nullify those advantages.
+Verica Vuckovic Hi. I'm a nail technician. I see nails that have been absolutely devastated by other salons on a regular basis. I've seen extreme levels of damage from people who have had acrylics and gels, but it's never the products fault. The most common reasons for this damage have been overfiling with an electric file or having them ripped off the nails as 'removal'. Please, don't help bad salons spread the lie thag gels are any healthier or better for you than acrylics.
love both but since I've developed an allergy to acrylic I have to do gel on clients. I really miss the amazing strength and sculpting power for 3d effects of acrylic though.
are you allergic to the monomer or the polymer ? some brands such as StarNail do odorless acrylic monomer, the liquid to powder ratio is different and you've got more playtime with it, it sets but it cures with uv. maybe you can try it out. I liked it
that is the type I used in school and then continued when I opened my salon. that is the one that broke me out in blisters. I am even unable to use gels that included acrylic. Now I'm too much of a chicken to try anything that has acrylic in them.
@@dmgogel polish is just a topper over a finished nail shape. Gel nails make up the actual shape of the nail. A lot of salons charging for "gel nails" are using acrylic and painting gel polish over.
I have a problem with gel nails. I've tried it several times, but my nails doesn't like it. Some huge "air bubles" appears underneath the gel, as if it tries to get off the nail, almost as soon as they're done. Have can that be? I've asked the several nail techs, but they don't know why and how. I really like it, and thats why i wondered I would try out acrylic. But would the same thing happen?
Can you do a Gel application Demo for creating a similar effect you would get with a acrylic? Like creating shape/length. Any tips? or ideas/suggestions? Any way to create a french tip or blend look with this gel application method? Thank You!
Thank you for clearing this up. Whenever i go to a salon and ask for gel, the girls dont understand what I mean. I dont understand what they are saying and things get confusing. So should I ask for gel nails and gel polish on top? There is usually a huge price difference if i use both gel and gel polish. Regular acrylic with nail polish is $23. $45 for gel and gel polish.
Can not wait for my product to arrive. I love your video they very nice looking. I will try to work on my RUclips video to have a colorful video as well ❤️
When I got into nail salons, they give me an option of acrylic powder and gel powder. Is there really a difference? Obviously acrylic is cheaper...but they always sucker me in to the more expensive option. I am thinking I just want to get acrylics done with normal nail polish. I have had the worst luck with gels peeling off :(

Allot of salons here in Oregon will upsell you "gel" when it's really just a higher quality acrylic. If they use a powder and a liquid it's acrylic not gel.
there is no such thing as gel acrylic. Powdery form + smelly liquid = Acrylic, Gel bottle + Powdery form + dipping = Dipping Acrylic , Gel builder is 100% all gel application is what u see in the video , its a clear sticky liquid
So all of our local nail shops have been charging us for gel nails but they are not gel. They use a powder just like acrylic but it's in a different container. How can they get away with this??? What should we do?
The same thing happened to me. We were being charged for gel nails but given acrylic. They are putting acrylic powder on the nails and then polishing it with the top coat for shellac nails. This is to make the customer think they're getting gel nails. I know now...Smh

I've had both gel and acrylic nails, both felt the same but the gel nails broke off within a matter of days. They were pretty soft compared to acrylic. I guess it depends on the length of the nail you get? Mine were pretty long so that probably had something to do with it, but I've never had an acrylic snap off like the gel did.
it gets hot because of how fast it cures. acrylic does the same if it's mixed runny (i use it for when i wear press on vampire fangs and it's really hot on my gums while it cures). a lot of salons will have a light box that has a fan built into it for that reason.
Hi there, just wondering if an led lamp will cure gel nails? And if so for how long? Or should I just get myself a uv lamp? Thanks!! Love the channel 💅🏽
I have wanted to start using Acrylic because I don't like the UV light you have to use to cure it because skin cancer runs in my family and I keep getting people telling me not to use Acrylic because it can cause fungal infections in the nail bed. Is this true?
Sadly things are misunderstood and greatly exaggerated/ it's like saying don't get a hair cut cause you could get your ear cut off- ask around for good caring nail techs - as for cancer, this is blown wayyyyyy out of proportion - its such a low exposure its highly unlikely- if this concerns you wear suntan lotion

right! I'm sitting here thinking WTH? I always get gel when I go to the nail shop and its a powder.
it may be that the color is in powder form while the gel itself is in gel form.. im not a profesional so im not the one to talk😂
they probably do acrylic with gel overlay
If it if powder, it is acrylic with gel top coat. They're messing with you.
Can U do a video of how to keep our nails healthy
Good idea
Yes please!!!!!
Oh yes, please
super idea
Getting closer and CLOSER to that 1 MILLION baby! 😍😍
hi, I just wanted to say that your videos are very well made and your explanations clear. You must be an awesome teacher.
Your room makes me feel so comfortable, i just want to sit there and drink a coffee with you and talk about nails. :D Beautiful. :)
So I go to the nail salon and ask for gels nails, I pay $50 and they use acrylic powder? Next time even if there is a next time, Im just going to ask for acrylic, save money..
If there is powder involved it's Acrylic
She asked if I got "gel nail color or regular" and quoted me a price of $25 f-ing dollars
just for a fill !! . She must've used gel nail polish tho , because she use the uv light to cure it.. ill never put myself in that position, to get rolled by these Asian mail salons again..
I always ask for powder acrylic so they dont get confused.
Ordinary_Ivellis lol right I don’t think they understand they probably understood they wanted gel polish 😂😂
The only thing I wish this video would have mentioned is what the differences are between the two when it comes to removing them. Are they both able to be removed at home?
Actually, I'd also like to know which is more durable.
Looks like I need to do another video about this- good idea
TryMyMartini a
i would really love this video too! also, the infill differences, is it possible with the gel in the same way you can with acrylic, or would you have to remove it and begin again
Nail Career Education have you done this video yet? I'd love to see it if you have!
Wow! Excellent video: info, presentation & filming! Thank you! 💅🏼 💗
I'm a fairly new subscriber, and I just want to say how much I love you, Suzie! I just started and your videos are amazing.
Love your videos and how well you explain your skills. Where could I find a list of your favorite products for acrylics?
I love OPI-UGLY DUCKLING-Magnetics Glitters n powders - ive used INM, CND 😀
+Nail Career Education Thank you so much!
Lol I'm so dumb I didn't know the difference and they did acrylic for me
Thanks for informative video. Just got a question, do you think acrylic system will be phase out and completely be replaced by gel system in the future? I asked because I notice that some salons are promoting gel more than acrylic now.
That's a great questions - answer - NEVER - acrylic RULES- a study done awhile back showed 75% of clients want Acrylic - they know it's stronger and more durable and versatile - trouble is finding a tech that's skilled at applying it 😀
Thanks for the reply. I will pursue learning acrylic then.
This helps so much! I have had so much trouble understanding this. I've asked a few artists in the past and they had a hard time explaining it to me. Sometimes it was more of just a language beerier, but sometimes I don't think they actually new.
very informative thank you. I have only ever used gel but I see so many beautiful things done with acrylic im going to give them a try on myself.
pleaseeee do a gel nail video sculpting orwithtips ?
wow this was filmed really well
What's better/less damaging for your nails?
Gel
You are such an amazing tutor, I love how you do and teach your job. So professional and fun.
your videos are so calming I keep watching them before i fall asleep
When ever I go to the salon they ask if I want gel or acrylic they say gel cost more but it's stronger so I get gel have they just been using acrylic because it has always been powder ?
Yes. They are giving you a gel coat.
Mia V i Like acrylic nails better because gel nails don't last long for me
Nail career education can you do a video on how to know the difference between a uv and a led lamp and what are the best brands, please
yes, great idea - coming soon :)
Queenahzingah Lewis
Thanks for this video! I see now that I'm being charged for gel nails but I've actually been given acrylic powder each time. I know now. It's a shame that businesses are ripping folks off like this...#neverAGAIN
This video was extremely helpful. I would love to one day see a review of your favorite and not so favorite products.
Pleasee do a tutorial with odorless acrylic!
Good idea. Thanks!😘
I actually like odorless acrylic. (Not that I’m a professional) but when you file it has a tacky layer on the top that stops dust from flying everywhere.
Beauty Banter first of all you can't even smell the acrylic.
thanks!!! i din knew the difference either. now I got it!!!
ur videos are Awsome!!!
😀
Gel nails are on the way out and I'm relieved. I'm training to be a nail tech right now and I just tried my first gel set the other day. The white for a French gel tip is the consistency of runny-ish toothpaste. So hard to smooth out with the flat brush I was given! Still, I think it looks more natural than acrylic in the long run.
Why are gel nails going out?
+rawreen Because they are messy.
+andemaiar I've heard acrylic are more damaging to your nail than gels though.
I'm trained to do nails, so there is literally no reason for me to watch this, and alas here I am. Love your videos Suzie!
Lol-
Ur vids r so helpful🤗♥️
I am really interested in having long nails and nail arts!
Wow, you're each day more beautiful my friend. As ever, an amazing video, thank you by you to be so wonderful ♥ ♥ ♥
love both but since I've developed an allergy to acrylic I have to do gel on clients.
+Neta McKinney They are alternatives to acrylic that are similar, can't remember the name tho. Try researching it.
+Neta McKinney Found it, it's called sns powder. It is suppose to be organic
that is amazing! thank you I will check into it!
Great information.
😀
+raiwolf 2015.4 the gel stays on way longer
+raiwolf 2015.4 yeah it will but I would ask if you go to a salon ask for their opinion also
+raiwolf 2015.4 they stay on for at least 3 weeks
+raiwolf 2015.4 no problem glad I could help 💝😄
This channel is wonderful! You've no idea how much your educational videos have helped! Thank you
Tks Susie. I appreciate your videos so much. wish I could go to your school. you have such a wonderful personality!
This is great. Too many ppl think that when they get gel polish it automatically makes them a gel nail. It's not.
Yes this is misunderstood
Really? Can you explain, I’m confused.
What gel nail kits do you recommend?
So what is better acrylic or gel nails, you are the best nail artist😍
I love gel nails so much. Your videos are so clear i love them.
Can you do a Gel application Demo for creating a similar effect you would get with a acrylic? Like creating shape/length. Any tips? or ideas/suggestions? Any way to create a french tip or blend look with this gel application method? Thank You!
She is veery pretty
Aw😀
I thought that.
I agree!
When You Use Gel Nails Can You Still Use A Drill To Shape It??
Most certainly - gel is softer so it's not essential
Josie Santana hjiiii
Thank you for clearing this up. Whenever i go to a salon and ask for gel, the girls dont understand what I mean. I dont understand what they are saying and things get confusing. So should I ask for gel nails and gel polish on top? There is usually a huge price difference if i use both gel and gel polish. Regular acrylic with nail polish is $23. $45 for gel and gel polish.
Can not wait for my product to arrive. I love your video they very nice looking. I will try to work on my RUclips video to have a colorful video as well ❤️
Hi! I'm planning on going to a college for esthetics. I also live in Vancouver, do you have any recommendations for any collages/Universities?
When I got into nail salons, they give me an option of acrylic powder and gel powder. Is there really a difference? Obviously acrylic is cheaper...but they always sucker me in to the more expensive option. I am thinking I just want to get acrylics done with normal nail polish. I have had the worst luck with gels peeling off :(
Yes- there's a lot of 'misleading' going on here
Nail Career Education I'm in Florida on upper east coast and was wondering which would be better down here.. I've been doing nails off an on for years now but I'm from up north and just recently moved south

Which is less harmful to the natural nails, acrylic or gel?
gel :)
i say acrylic because thats what everyone told me and i went to get GEL nails done and i have NEVER seen my nails so fucked up
I love listening to your videos while I paint my nails 💜 it's so relaxing and it helps me stay patient when I make mistakes 💕 great informative video
+Sarah Fanion fantastc💜
So all of our local nail shops have been charging us for gel nails but they are not gel. They use a powder just like acrylic but it's in a different container. How can they get away with this??? What should we do?
okay but why you so pretty thp 💕😢
why is it that the last time that i went to get my nails done, they were acrylic but they still used the UV light after they put the nail polish on?
or LED light.. hmm not sure which is which..but he used one of those on me
+Bri guz they probably used a gel topcoat so they had to cure the top coat
+eblots oh okay(:
The same thing happened to me. We were being charged for gel nails but given acrylic. They are putting acrylic powder on the nails and then polishing it with the top coat for shellac nails. This is to make the customer think they're getting gel nails. I know now...Smh
its because that's an acrylic gel technique they showed me this in school..
I've been wearing gel nails for past four years and I LOVE THEM! Just came across your channel and it's fantastic, you answer all my questions. Subscribed!
To be fair though, kolinsky brushes for gel are AMAZING and I highly recommend trying them out! There are special ones designed for gel :) Got them for christmas and I've been in love ever since!
Good advice 😀👍🏾
I payed $10 more on my nails for gel yet the salon used powder
you probably paid for acrylic and then a gel polish over it. I got my nails done today and gel polish was $10 more to paint on acrylic then normal polish
+Brennan Boltin a lot of cheaper nail places advertise 'gel nails' but they are just acrylics with a gel topcoat.
there's gel powder and hard gel hard gel is the stuff that looks like taffy and gel powder is what you got
what I would do is not get a gel polish and i would get a gel top coat myself and go over the top😋
+Baby Blue there is no such thing as gel powder , it's just acrylic
i like acrylic more. seems easier to master and use
hello I need your advice please I want to buy an at home pro acrylic kit but I dont khow which one to buy what do you suggest thank you
I'd have to research - cause I don't know of one that's professional for non pros
Hi if you go onto a web site called wish they have some good starter kits which you can order acrylic and iif gel as well. it has everything you need to get started. Australian dollars you can get whole kits from $25- 50.
that's has tips gels brushes acrylic light cleanser you name it its in it.
Or you cs n just get acrylic sets for around and under Australian $20.
hope this helps
thank you that did help
+lolita vanes your most welcome.
I'm glad I could help
+tracie k thats where i buy my stuff also but i don't know if its the gel or my lamp for some reason it wont cure did you buy gel for nails also?
I'm in love with your videos!!! You are so knowledgeable and you make me want to renew my manicurist license!!! I wish you were close to me so I could have my nails done by you! Lol.
I have no interest in having my nails done or having a career in that, still i like watching your videos :) you are a vert good and thorough teacher, i enjoy that. Also I'm fascinated by the interesting new techniques i never knew one could do with nails. Great video
is gel lighter on the nails??? my nails get damaged really bad when i get acrylics..
Same but they look so pretty!
I've had both gel and acrylic nails, both felt the same but the gel nails broke off within a matter of days. They were pretty soft compared to acrylic. I guess it depends on the length of the nail you get? Mine were pretty long so that probably had something to do with it, but I've never had an acrylic snap off like the gel did.
gels are softer and less damaging
it gets hot because of how fast it cures. acrylic does the same if it's mixed runny (i use it for when i wear press on vampire fangs and it's really hot on my gums while it cures). a lot of salons will have a light box that has a fan built into it for that reason.
xSaraxMxNeffx why r u wearing fangs??.....
Ok so in other words gel nails is a gel always and not a powder
how do you stop the nails from tearing off your real nails
Using a good application technique😉
thank you 💕
Hi there, just wondering if an led lamp will cure gel nails? And if so for how long? Or should I just get myself a uv lamp? Thanks!! Love the channel 💅🏽
Omg her voice is so soothing and relaxing I need to stop watching these at night cause I never finish them 😂😭
I have wanted to start using Acrylic because I don't like the UV light you have to use to cure it because skin cancer runs in my family and I keep getting people telling me not to use Acrylic because it can cause fungal infections in the nail bed.
I actually do my nails myself at home, could you please do a video on proper sanitation to avoid the whole fungus thing? That would be super helpful.
