  • Amazon Warehouse laptops are awesome. Ordered a Lenovo Ideapad s540 Ryzen 3500U 8GB 256GB and got it over 22% cheaper than the new one. And it really looks like new, hard drive used couple of hours.
    So I upgraded it right away and added a 1TB nvme SSD, yes it has 2 nvme SSD slots. The other 2280 slot works 4x and other 2242 is 2x Pci-e. Replaced the 4GB with 16GB memory and switched the Wi-Fi module to Intel 9260 with Bluetooth 5.0.
    I can recommend to purchase from Amazon Warehouse, at least if the condition is described as "Very good".
    So I used these products in the video:
    Wi-Fi module 9260: amzn.to/3g7MUwn
    (Wifi 6 could be better now AX200 which is this one: amzn.to/2X1jloG )
    1TB SSD NVME: amzn.to/3fwpMGY
    Into the smaller slot, you might be able to put this Sabrent Rocked 2242 for example: amzn.to/33qD8SL
    The larger slot has space (at least my model) under it so there fits SSD which has chips on both sides.
    For the memory upgrade, I used this 16GB memory module: amzn.to/3g4l44c
    I guess also this 32GB memory would go: amzn.to/2D8rj8K
    So after Upgrades it has:
    20GB Memory, 1.256TB SSD and Intel Wi-Fi module. Screen is 14" FullHD IPS 250 nit

    Hi Jossu,
    Nice video. Very helpfull.
    I followed your instructions and replaced both RAM and HD as you mention with ADATA SSD 1TB and Crusial memory 16gb. My problem is that after reboot the system cant load the windows. Did you made any changes in BIOS or something else in software in order to boot from Western Digital (because the disk changed socket)?

      I don't remember that I did do anything to the bios. But you can check from the bios the boot order.
      Do you get what kind of error message?
      Is your bios showing the memory correctly?
      Do you have exactly same model, Ryzen ? Intel does not support 2 drives I guess. Does the bios show both drives?

      1. No, it is not required to disconnect the battery, just be sure that the laptop is shut down, and that should do.
      2. Not every RAM module is compatible. This laptop uses 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, so make sure your upgrade module is also 2666MHz. Crucial's website has a great tool that shows Crucial products compatible with your laptop model (RAM/SSD etc)

      Hi, Actually also 2400mhz RAM is enough, because that is the maximum what Ryzen 3000 mobile CPUs can utilize. Some of the laptops may have 2666mhz RAM modules, but they will work only at 2400mhz speed. For example one of these would fit: amzn.to/31uOq5J

    Thanks for this video! I'm surprised to see two M.2 slots (and one of them 2280, too) in such a small form factor. I'm split between this model (3500U, 12 GB, 1 TB SSD) and MateBook D14. I like the upwards firing speakers, but I hate that you cannot charge it over USB-C and have to trudge along yet another power brick. Also, I've heard only bad things about these Lenovo IdeaPad cheap keyboards. What's your experience, please?

    • @jossushardware1158

      It's not anything new that a laptop has 2 m.2 slots, Slim 7 lenovo also has, but these secondary slots are usually not advertised, becuase the laptop anyway always comes with 1 ssd. The keyboard is for my taste very good. I like it more than macbook pro 13 keyboard or SLim 7 keyboard. But I think it is about mostly where you get used to.

    Hi, thanks for the video! I'm not used to disassembly notebooks, so a few questions if I may: at 4:30 are you disconnecting the battery? Is it mandatory/advisable? The back panel can be easily removed by hand with no extra pry tools, after you remove the screws? Is there a risk of bending it? As far as you know, asymmetric dual channel will work on i5 10210 model as well? Thanks a lot :)

    • @jossushardware1158
      @jossushardware1158  4 года назад +1

      Yes I disconnected the battery. Also I used a tool to open the back panel, which is not visibile in the video. Some very sharp/thin metal or plastic tool will be fine, the back panel is very tough, so I think it wont bend easily. In addition to screws, there are also some kind of clips which makes sounds when you open it, you need to use quite much force. Also remember to press the back panel very well back BEFORE putting the screws back. I used sharp tool first, and with a credit card corner to open the "clips". I do not know about Intel dual channel importance. Used to be less than AMD but dont know about the 10th gen.

      It's not included in the video, cos I had to stop the recording. But first I removed the large cable over the wifi, the end of the cable which is near the battery. It's little tricky, does not need force at all, but you need to unlock the white thing and then just pull the flat cable . Then removed the wifi card antenna cables (look first how they are connected, take a pic) then attached the new card. The part which was hardest was the antenna cable re-attachment. They are so tiny that it took 30min to place them on the new wifi-module. I think they should be placed so that they are not straight, you carefully press down and hear a click sound.

    I have a very similar model to this. The S540-14API. I'd like to upgrade the SSD on mine but am having a hard time figuring out exactly which one fits correctly ? Are you using the Adata XPG SX8200 Pro in this ? Also, was there any particular reason that you wanted to upgrade the Dual band Wifi card ? This is the best info I've found on upgrading so far so thank you.

    • @jossushardware1158
      @jossushardware1158  4 года назад +1

      So you probably have the exact same model. But it might be that under that model number 14API is different variations with different slot options. My laptop has one standard m.2 NVME PCI-e x4 slot where you can put any NVME ssd (I believe). Then it has the other slot, smaller one, m.2 nvme pci-e x2 slot where only fits 2242 (which means 42mm long ssd drive). So the bigger slot should take any nvme drive which is 2280 (80mm long). Do not use m.2 SATA SSD drives cos they are slow and I think only NVME PCI-e drives are supported like Samsung EVO 970 or Western Digital Black SN750, Crucial P1
      .
      So my plan was first to replace the 256GB SSD to 1TB Adata XPG 8200 pro, but surprisingly found out that I could put the 256GB to the smaller slot and install that 1TB to the longer slot. When I bought the laptop I didn't know that the included SSD is the shorter 2242 version and that the laptop has 2 slots. So I didn't even need to re-install Windows. So I selected the Adata XPG 8200 pro cos its little bit cheaper than for example Samsung EVO 970 and according to reviews the Adata consumes less power and is similarly fast. I think it's really good drive.
      Related to the Wi-FI, I just wanted to replace the WI-FI module because I wanted to have Bluetooth 5.0 and more reliable WI-FI. I do not actually know is there a big difference. And I can warn a little, the Wi-FI module is not so easy to change, I even had to shut down the camera and thats why there is no video about it. According to reviews, the included Realtek WI-FI is not as good as Intel. But if you want to change the WI-FI, change it straight to WI-FI 6 ax model, it should work also and is around 25€ and more future proof than 9260 what I used.

    • @RobWooten
      @RobWooten 4 года назад

      @@jossushardware1158 Thanks for all the info. I have a 256gb larger 2280 MM in the main slot by the battery, so I will unfortunately have to do a fresh install of Windows. I'd still like to use the second slot while I'm in there but it's probably not even needed. You're probably correct about the Realtek Wi-Fi module mine has seemed to lose connection occasional but corrects itself after less than a minute or two. Hopefully it will be fixed by a driver update in the future ? And the speeds seems to be more than ample for me. My model has 12gb of memory with 9.94gb of usable memory.
      How is your battery life ? I personally feel like it should be much better than it is. I've also read from a comment in a different youtube post that doing a clean windows install remedies this and improves the battery life significantly.

      Yes, I never cloned it or reinstalled and I do not notice any performance drop.
      I guess it is similarly fast in both of the slots because the drive is anyway PCIe-2x so it does not benefit if you put it on the faster 4x slot. The drive gets little bit more warmer than the larger drive on the 4x slot (60Celsius vs 41 under load), but I haven't noticed any speed drop. It gets about 1300mb/s read in crystal disk mark, while the XPG 8200pro in the 4x slot gets 3500 mb/s.

I have no experience of the default wifi module, maybe to some people it is enough. Remember to disconnetc battery before replacing wifi, and you need pretty stable hands and good eyes when you insert the antenna cables to the new wifi module, they are so small.

    I have the same model but the storage of my model was already 1tb SSD which is for is not that much of a storage coz i used to store lots of content on my laptop. I didn't opened yet my laptop, so that i could now void the warranty on it. So I am preparing for the stuff needed to upgrade.
    Questions:
    1. Does the 1TB sits on my laptop is the longer stick than the shorter stick showed on the video? Can I also upgrade it into 1TB of storage.
    2. Can I have the full specs of the upgrades that you bought like the RAM and the SSD?
    3. So now, I have looked for the Intel WIfi 9260 but there is a Intel Wifi 9560. Couldn't get the difference between the two of them. So which chips should I choose? 9260 or 9560

    • @jossushardware1158
      @jossushardware1158  4 года назад

      I guess your 1TB SSD is the longer 2280 version. Of course It could be a shorter one in the shorter slot, but 2242 1TB drives are still pretty expsenve, so why would Lenovo put there more expensive SSD? You just have to open it up to see. I think it could be possible to put the largest available SSDs to both of them, so what I know is 2TB to shorter 2242 and 4TB to longer 2280. But it will cost more than the whole laptop. Also the 2242 might take only drive which has chips on the other side only. So I used these parts in the video:
      Wi-Fi module 9260: amzn.to/35sKIts
      (i would now recommend actually AX200 which is this one: amzn.to/36ybulC )
      1TB SSD NVME: amzn.to/2Fpyd7c
      Into the smaller slot, you could put this 512GB Lexar 2242 for example: amzn.to/2unVbtl
      Or this Sabrent 2TB: amzn.to/2QtOdM2
      For the memory upgrade, I used this 16GB memory module: amzn.to/36DV9LS
      I guess also 32GB memory would go even its not officially supported: amzn.to/39GCvFl
      9260 or 9560 might not be much difference, I think it should be the non v-pro model. LIke I said, I would go now with AX200, cos thats the new standard, even not many Wifi routers does not support it yet. Anyway 9260 is absolutely fine, at least it works in my laptop without problems and is little bit cheaper than ax200.
