  • A guide to upgrading the Lenovo ideaPad S340 NVMe SSD, 2.5" HDD and DDR4 RAM.
    This is a relatively simple process requiring just a Torx T5 screwdriver, a small Philips head screwdriver and a plastic pry tool.

    With the S340-15API, how much RAM can it hold and it on of them soldered to the board? and what's the max RAM MHz it can hold up to?

    Thank you! This was quite helpful. Funny that the HW manual indicates that all of the exterior screws are Phillips and not Torx. I was unable to remove the battery screws as they were too tight and I was afraid of stripping them. I also could not just unplug the battery from the board so I left it while I did my memory upgrade which went without a hitch.

    Thank you very much! I had no idea that there was an empty drive bay inside and that it was this easy to open the case. I upgraded my S340 two days ago and it was really worth it. Now I have 20 GByte RAM and almost 500 GByte empty SDD space!

      @@dish_81 if you have the S340 then the 256 GByte which you have is the small M2-drive in the upper right corner. What I did was to add a standard 2.5-inch SDD of 512 GByte in the empty bay. This gives me two separate drives which I am completely happy with - it's much easier than trying to swap out the existing drive because you would have to reinstall the complete system, all your software, ...

      I take it from this you have added a 16gb ram stick? what specs did you use? The official line from Lenovo is that this only supports up to 8gb, so i'm hesitant to try the upgrade. can you confirm it works ok?

      @@fsaavedrap there are several sites on the net pointing out that the board is capable of 36 GByte total in the form of 1pcs 32 GByte plus the built-in 4 GByte. I used a "standard" 16 GByte unbuffered 1,2 V 260-pin SODIMM DDR4 2666 MHz and it works absolutely stable, no problems.

    Battery connector was very difficult and wasn't going to risk damage going by experience of fixing other people's mobiles for 5 years, but got my RAM in duel channel now thanks to this.

    Than,k you so much for this - just upgraded the RAM on my Ideapad S340 15" model to max 20GB and put in a second 500GB SSD - wouldn't have known there was even space for it if I hadn't seen this video. The one thing I also learned is you do need to disconnect the battery, otherwise the laptop won't power back on at all for some reason!

      @@gaurav.taneja I added a second SSD in the empty drive bay below the original SSD board so I now have 2 SSDs.

    This is super helpful, thanks - to be clear, the related parts you've listed and linked are all I'd need to do this? i.e. no extra cables or bracket for the SSD, nothing extra for any RAM I want to add, no extra screwdrivers needed? Thanks!

    Sweet! I just came out of warranty and upgraded my S340 to 2 x 1TB ssd's and 20GB Ram! (Don't order your ram direct from Crucial if you don't live in their country though! Took them 1 month to deliver a stick of ram?!?) Thanks for your great video, made the job really easy to do.

      @@Innocentstuff it's got the Ryzen 7 3700u quad core in it. The Ram and the ssd's have made a world of difference. I can now run Adobe Photoshop and Premiere and Vectric vCarve pro with no out of memory messages

    great video, I added a second HDD to the empty spot.. but when I sapped out my 4GB ram stick for 16GB the laptop wont boot... if I remove the ram from that slot altogether it boots fine.. if I place the 4GB stock ram back it still wont boot... did I break the ram slot?

    What about the Type C port, i heard that it doesn't support charging but it would support a dongle with ethernet, hdmi and some other basic ports?

      Yes, it'll work with standard USB-C devices, or USB-A devices using an adapter.

    Hi, I upgrated y laptop l340 with 16gb of ram, however, I've noticed that after I using it for a long period of time, the plastic cover in the where the ram is located is very hot(that means that the aluminum cover is a lot hoter as well as the ram module). Could it be because of the aluminum cover, sholud I take it off?

    Hey did your laptop come with a 256gb ssd? Just wondering because my specs are 8gb ram, 256gb. Just want to know because ima order a 500gb ssd to put in but can I use 2 ssd at the same time?

      The one I had was a 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD as standard. It would be possible to fit a larger M.2 drive and a SATA SSD though since the connector and mount for the SATA 2.5" drive was all present.
      Best bet would be to open it up and check.

      You can fit an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD and a 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD.

      Yes, it is possible. The max of ram is 20gb. Also, you can check that with Crucial System Scanner

      Should be the same or very similar. Graphics can't be upgraded.

    Would SN750/970 EVO or other NVME SSD fit in place of that M.2 2280 Area? From what I understand this laptop will stay M.2 Sata Connector and not the M.2 NVME correct? SSD on it says "PCIe GEN3:NVMe" and crucial website gives you option of M.2 2280 NVME or SATA connector?

      Those should work fine. Both M.2 2280 NVMe and SATA drives will fit in the slot and should work, but I'd fit an NVMe drive.

    Hello. I have a problem, and well I hope someone can help me. I have an IdeaPad S340 14API with 4GB of onboard RAM and AMD Ryzen 5 3500U Processor. I recently installed an 8 GB RAM with a frequency of 2400 MHz (which is the compatible frequency) and since then the equipment has not worked normally. Every while when the pc is going to start, the screen turns off and another starts and so on until the OS is able to start. Other times when it is running and I do a process that consumes RAM, the OS stops (I get a blue screen with a sad face :() and restarts, or sometimes the screen goes black and freezes. The fan does not work normally , sometimes it does not start. Can someone please guide me what may be happening. Thank you very much and excellent video. An extra fact is that I did not put the metal plate that covers the slot.

    Why you removed the ssd slot one which has the warranty sticker on and returned back, I followed your steps I upgraded the ram and I added ssd drive of 512gb and after I switched on the laptop it did displayed a blank black screen what probably went wrong with me, somebody told me your bois io chip damaged

    Nice video bro, is there approximately 4 mm of space in the m.2 nvme slot to attach a heatsink with thermal pad? I have a temperature issue on the SSD. Thanks before that.

      On which side? 4mm is a lot so I doubt it. Normally you join the SSD to the base with a thermal pad.

      Yes, you can have both an M.2 and SATA drive. You'd probably want to clone the contents of the SATA HDD to the M.2 SSD and then erase it.

    Mine comes with 12 gb of ram, is it possible to upgrade it to 16 gb? Or 12 gb is the limit?

    I installed an 8gb ram upgrade, but now I can't get my laptop to charge. It is pulling from the battery just not charging. Any ideas to fix?

      I don't think you can upgrade 8gb + 4gb. U can only do 4gb + 4gb.

      I fitted a DDR4-2666 module, but the 5405U chip won't run it at that speed.
