- RED ALERT! IT'S THE BOSS METAL ZONE!
For real though, I really love that pedal, purely because it is the Around the Fur guitar tone in a box. But what if we ONLY use the Metal Zone? No FX, no EQ, No Noise Gate....Just pure, delicious Metal Zone?
Let's find out.
This was the first album I ever learned on guitar
One of the first for me too. Guy I worked with came up to me and said "You like Korn?" I said yeah, then he game me a tape that just had 'Around the fur' written on it. I played that tape till it snapped, figured out most of the songs on my 90's Squire Strat. Then bought the Metal Zone, all because of that tape.
Same
His tone in this album is like a razor blades it's a tone that by itself is not very pleasant but stays perfect in the mix
Metal Zone does the trick if you’re not looking to spend much money
The closest “Around the Fur”-type pedal currently on the market is the Marshall Shredmaster. Essentially it’s the Marshall JMP-1 OD2 channel (same channel Stef uses) in a stompbox
Dude, love the way you explained all of this. I enjoy when people try to emphasize more on how to do stuff by hand rather than "buy this to do x" - cheers!
Thanks I appreciate that, that's exactly the point of my whole channel: Anyone can have fun without spending a fortune. Thanks for watching!
@@jonnyboy1925oh I'm very happy I stumbled across this channel then. Appreciate your content!
THAT pedal is all I need to hear in order to know
;) It's become such a weirdly specific meme in recent years, but for a relatively low price it delivers a pretty good late 90's early 00's sound. Mine is battered but I'd never get rid of it.
That sounds awesome
Yoooooo that Mascara tone was spot on
Thanks for watching! Literally just set the Metal Zone, and roll the neck pickup back. Couldn't be easier!
@@jonnyboy1925 metal zone is a dope pedal. Over hated because people use it like crap
Dude I just discovered your channel today, your vids are amaziiiiiiing!!! I will get a Harley Benton 7 string and a Boss Metalzone, just because of the 3 vids I have watched so far, I had no idea it was ''easy'' playing Deftones? Thank you so much for the inspiration.
Thanks, that is exactly why I do this. Remember, Stef is all about the rhythm. Good luck and have fun!!!
Mascara was spot on. The rest of it was near as damn it. Awesome stuff for one of the best albums ever written.
Sounds really close, nice video. I also like that your distortion sounds very sparkly, reminds me the guy from BOSS who promoted BOSS ML2, though he used the same Ibanez guitar.
Yeah I love that guitar, it an Ibanez 520qm, I'd recomend it to anybody. Looks like a Strat, built like a Les Paul, costs a fraction of either. Weighs nearly 4 kilos, that body is 2 inches of solid mahogany with a maple cap. You will never find a better, warmer clean tone from a neck pickup. Honestly it's mindblowing.
Hey I just wanted to show my support, I'm new to making music and on a very tight budget and this video basically saved my wallet lol, really appreciate how you showed us how to get that AtF tone on a budget, from a fellow numetal fan to another, thank you.
Hey, happy to help! If you're looking for quality pedals on a budget, I HIGHLY recommend Caline Pedals (Not sponsored in any way, just love them LOL). Seriously the Tantrum and the Wonderland pedals are AMAZING! Also those Beringer pedals are great, too the only downside is they're plastic so not really gig-proof. Thanks for watching!
Thats insanely spot on my only gripe is you alternate pick but it's still that atf tone which I love
Sounds pretty good through a phone mic, RUclips compression and my phone’s speakers!
Need to get myself a Metal Zone now!
I'm actually blown away, how close this is. ATF is my favorite album of all time. I just ordered that pedal dude! :D I got an old washburn guitar, that has a switch each for every pickup, so I can use that for the tremolo effect for Dai The Flu.
One thing to note, Mascara and Dai The Flu are in Eb tuning (E standard, but half a step down)
Hell Yeah! I love hearing this, it's the entire point of my channel. Everyone, on any budget has the right to have fun. thanks for watching!
Funnily enough I’ve seen plenty of artists use the Metal Zone as an overdrive with the Distortion off straight into the clean channel of an Amplifier.
a recording tip i picked up for using your phone as a microphone is leveling your amp volume to not be too loud and then putting your phone mic as close as possible to the middle of the amp (not on the top tho)
Thanks, that's super helpful, I'll give it a shot!
Glad I stumbled onto this, been playing AtF on bass and now I’ll be trying it on guitar deff on a budget lol
Awesome! The Caline Tantrum is super cheap and well worth a look. Thanks for watching!
Heeey this is the setup i used back in 99-01 and i remember thinking the sound was pretty close to deftones lol
Now this is fucking awesome. Probably my favorite album by them thank you! Sounds great
I thought you are into boxing.. Great stuff, you nailed that tone!
Simon Smith (the guy who makes a lot of Black and Death metal videos and pedal demos too) had a Nu Metal band in the late 90s - early 2000s called Snub and his rig at the time just three pedals, a Boss Noise Supressor, a Metal Zone and a Tuner straight to the mixer, and because that was the only thing he used for years on both studio and live situations he has a soft spot for the Metal Zone, he said he never got any complains of his tone because every venue is different and the pedal was good enough for everything
IMO the Metal Zone has a bad rep for just one knob, the Mid freq one (not the Mids, the Mid freq) and that is because is misleading, what actually does is boost the current mid signal so if you just have that knob all the way off you aren't really boosting anything and you are fixing the main complain of the Metal Zone which is the "can of bees" or the "way too nasal" sound and it becomes a very usable pedal for most styles of rock and metal music, because the massive misunderstand of this simple knob the next Boss "metal pedal" the Metalcore ML2 didn't had a mid freq (or mids at all) and it was received way better
its insane how close that pedal gets to the atf tone. my only question is are you running the pedal into the fx loop on the amp or the input? I know that most people use the metal zone as a sort of distorted pre amp into the fx loop to actually get it to sound good.
Thanks for watching! The Metal Zone goes straight into the input. The amp is on the clean channel with the bass and treb set to 12 o'clock. The pedal is doing all the work. To get Mascara all the settings are the same, I'm just rolling back the neck pickup volume.
cant stop watching this . bloody brilliant !!! 😂😂 if you're ever in nottingham let me know and ill buy you a proper pint 😂. cheers lad x
Sounds gnarly
Awesome video mate! Cheers
try and get the tone from adrenaline. that tone is so gritty and dirty but unique as hell
Love your enthusiasm, great video! 😎🤟
Thanks! I appreciate that.
its a good pedal if you take the time to dial in a good tone. everyone that hates it so much just gave up. you can do so much with that pedal because it is super sensitive. one slight twist can totall change the tone.
This is so helpful, thank you!
If you go into FX loop vs direct, it changes once you mess with knobs and your amp.
Thank you!!!! you rock bro...
Mate i was about to buy a multi effects (valeton gp200) now that i think about it I should get analog pedals to get the tones i love. Analog pedals holds its value and doesn’t be obsolete in future like multi effects.
What you think of multi effects?? Are they good as analog or should i get analog pedals
Love your videos mate ! So honestly
Hey y'know, go with whatever you fancy. No one type of pedal better than another because everyone plays differently with different setups. If you want to play with a multi effects unit, go ahead, then later on if you fancy trying some dedicated analog pedals, why not? As long as you like what you're hearing, it's all good!
Brilliant stuff
Saw this video and went straight to eBay to order a metal zone!
Yes! Let's start the Metal Zone Revoution!
I think the Tantrum is a clone of the EHX Metal Muff ... which is kind of a "copy" of a Metal Zone.
I'm not a Metal Zone apologist by any stretch, but you gotta love how a pedal that gets universally dunked on has spawned so many copies lol.
@@jonnyboy1925 right!!
Also the Metal Zone can easily be mod'd a lot of different ways to make it "better" / different.
Snipping one leg of a certain few different resistors and capacitors can really open up a whole new world.
Honestly would be better without all the bass but on a budget this sounds pretty good. Especially mascara. With a marshall JMP-1 it would not be so hissy while still having the high end
I think that's one of the problems with the metalzone is when you get your "in the room tone" it usually has a lot of bass, then you try to record or play live with a band and you run into all kinds of problems
Great cider
Next video tone of white pony plz
Sure, might take a few weeks though, about a month ago I broke my left thumb pretty badly. But as soon as I'm healed I'll give it a shot.
Here you go, tried my best

hahaha brilliant mate!!!!
Большое спасибо
Lol Denmark street still shits on metal good on you for doing the thing 🤘🏽
Try to build a budget guitar from temu parts
I kinda did, I ordered blanks from china, then built a flying V that bleeds, shoots fire and has a smoke machine in the neck pickup. It's called Regan, you can check out the process of me building it on my channel ;)
So on your amp you say bass and Treb set to 12 o’clock. Is mid turned to zero?
Thanks for watching! I'm using a 2001 Marshall MG30RCD, I like it, but I know it's widely despised. The dirty channel broke a decade ago, so it's on the clean channel, only 1 volume, 1 bass and 1 treb knob. I wanted the pedals to do all the work. Volume is around 8 0'clock (because it's in my front room) and both Bass and Treb are at 12. Hope that helps.
I have the same guitar I love it so much are you sure it's a 520? I have the exact model in pinkish purple, my first guitar after becoming semi serious about playing
Yes, I was looking for the 529 online and that’s not it, what’s the name of your guitar?
Thanks for watching! I Believe it's called a 520QM, but I could be wrong. It's one of those guitars that not many people have heard of, but those that have love them. A proper hidden gem.
Really, really, really.
Kinda funny that you teach how to get around the fur tone but you didn't play that song lol 😅😅😅😅😅
Trust me, I would play it all front to back if I could be bothered to edit an hour long video :)
u know it's also the name of the album right
you think you can be able to do slipknots self titled guitar tone with your pedal setup?
Sure I could give it a go.

Gave it my best shot
Yeah but which Marshall amp are you using? And the settings there? These things matter.
30watt Marshall solid state combo from around 20 years ago. Clean channel. Bass and treb at 12 o'clock.
@@jonnyboy1925thanks for the amp info as well. I'm going to work on a Deftones like sound with these settings on a GT-1. Even if it doesn't sound exactly like it, I'm sure whatever I come up with will still sound pretty cool using your settings as a foundation.
No problem. Good Luck!@@TheKingacevedo
Nice lol
What amp do you use mate?
It's a beat up solid state Marshall 30 watt combo I bought around 2001, it's called a 'G30R CD'. They're not expensive, and perfect for the front room where this one lives. It's not bad though, can get a pretty good grunge sound out of the dirty channel. For this video the amp is set to clean with the bass and treble at 12 o'clock. Thanks for watching!
dude thanks, I just bought 5 pedals on ebay
I am in love with this tone thank you for this, makes it so much easier to replicate than I thought 🙏🙌🤟🧃
Nice, dude! That's awesome!
